A way to backup only my iPod's playlists?

Hello!
This may be a stupid question but is there a way to backup only my iPod's playlists? I haven't found such an option and it feels quite stupid to backup my entire music collection.
I'm using iTunes 7.0.1.8 and a 1st generation iPod nano (4Gb).
  Windows XP Pro

And by playlist I meant music library.
So I'd like to backup only songs that are on my iPod, not all existing music files on my computer.

  • Best way to backup Windows Formatted Ipod to convert to Mac OS X?

    Hi,
My wife has a 3rd gen iPod nano which was formatted using a Windows machine which is no longer available. I now have a linux desktop and my macbook. We would like to convert her iPod for use with the my macbook, but the only way seems to be reformatting the ipod and losing all her music.
So my question is what is the best way to backup the iPod without being able to use iTunes (it won't recognize her iPod on my macbook since it is windows formatted and there is no iTunes version for Linux)? I can mount the Ipod as a disk on my Linux machine, would it work to just to copy the entire filesystem on the iPod to some temp directory on my desktop, reformat the iPod on my macbook, then remount the iPod and copy the files back to over to the iPod?

The MacBook can read the Windows formatted iPod just fine, so you can use the above suggestions to get the stuff onto the Mac's library. After that you can either leave the Nano Windows formatted and use it as is, or restore it on the Mac so it is in Mac format.

  • Best way to backup only originals?

    Hi all,
I am wishing to determine the best way to backup just the original photos. iPhoto maintains so many other files in relation to the original that it is hard to determine what's what.
I assume that backing up the 'Originals' folder would do the trick, but I want to be sure as the images are important. I can afford to lose the modified ones, but I can't lose the originals.
    Thanks for any advice.
    Ed

What other files would I need to reflect rolls and albums?<<<</div>
I'm not 100% certain but I have an idea for you.
I don't do much modification in iPhoto; mostly rotating images.<<<</div>
This is part of the basis for my idea.
Mainly due to space and time constraints.<<<</div>
    This is the other part.
From INSIDE iPhoto, select all photos in the library and do a "Revert to original." That will empty your "Modified" folder while retaining everything necessary for rolls, albums, ratings, etc. Now, exit iPhoto and back up the ENTIRE "iPhoto Library Folder." By far the bulk of the bytes will be the original files. The remainder will be all the "support" files.

  • Is there a way to backup only the Originals folder to DVD?

I've really messed up the file names of my photos in several ways: by mistakenly changing a camera setting, importing some from different cameras, and editing and saving the edited versions (elsewhere, TG, not in iphoto), thereby replacing/rewriting some of my edited photos.
However, I think all the originals, or copies of them, are in the iphoto originals folder. I'd like to save/store/archive all of them to DVD(s) that I can store elsewhere, and then delete the library - with the exception of a few favorites - and start over. When I tried to burn the library to a disk, it didn't give me the option of using multiple disks because of the size (@20G), I just got a msg stating the disk was too small. Is there a way to burn the Originals folder only?
    thanks,
    Melissa

How does one "right-click" on a Mac?
How does one "duplicate"? ("command C"?).
Assuming that I can then find this copy, how do I split into smaller folders? (Highlight a portion of library and then create a smaller folder?- or is there another way?). Does this allow me to split using my Events categories and keep that structure in the smaller folders on the DVDs?
I have backed-up everything including iPhoto onto 2 different types of external drives (a third drive - a LaCie has me stumped) and am now trying to figure out how to backup iPhoto onto DVDs. The instructions I have found say to go to Finder; create a Burn Folder; then Burn. This creates a file that can be read by both Macs and PCs. I have 66 GB of photos so I need to break up iPhoto into smaller chunks for burning to DVDs - therefore, your post is of interest to me.
Sorry for the simple questions but after nearly 3 years using a MacBook, I am still trying to figure out the "cleverness" in its operation.

The iCloud backup does not include non-Tunes purchased music and photos that were synced to the iPod. The iCloud backup does not also included a few other things included in the iPod backup that iTunes makes.
The iPod backup that iTunes makes does also not included non-iTunes purchases and photos synced to the iPod.
free programs like iFunBox with copy non-iTunes purchased music and some other things from iPod to computer.  A paid program like TouchCopy is needed to copy photos synced to the iPod to a computer.

  • Restoring iCloud's iPhone Backup to an iPod Touch

    Hi there.
My last birthday wasn't precisely the best, as I got my iPhone 4 stolen.
Had to deal with an Android device which isn't nearly as good as what I was used to have, so I decided to buy this fancy iPod Touch 4G 64 gb until the new iPhone arrives and see how it fares. My idea is to leave the Android phone only to make/answer calls and tether internet to the iTouch.
Problem is, I was thinking about restoring the stolen iPhone's iCloud backup to the iPod Touch so I didn't have to fiddle around with settings and stuff (and to not loose all my Chrono Trigger's advance ), but can't seem to be able to do that. I'm aware that those two are different devices and some things wouldn't work (like whatsapp without a proper mobile number), but it seems like a nonsense to me if you can't transfer the backup between two devices that are more or less the same.
I hope someone knows if there's a way to restore my iPhone's backup to the iTouch.
    Thanks in advance.

Well, I finally managed to do that, weird thing is I had to wipe and restore the iPod Touch's and sync it with iCloud at the very beggining of the setup, obviously whatsapp doesn't work with the iTouch so it got automatically deleted, but for everything is Ok, I find the iTouch to be a tad slower than the iPhone though and miss the flash, but that's how it goes by now.

  • I did a backup on my iPod touch and it said it worked...but now it won't let me access anything and says "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode.  You must restore this IPod before it can be used."  I will lose all my videos and pics if I do that

I did a backup on my iPod touch last night and it said it worked...I wanted to make sure my 1100 pictures and videos, mostly of my son, were safe since we rarely use the iPod touch anymore since we bought an iPad...I can't find them or I have no idea how to access them...I do not have a MAC...I have an HP computer with windows...
Now when I try to use my iTunes a message comes up that says my iPod is on recovery mode and has to do a restore to use my iTunes again...so when u click on that it states that pushing that button will restore my iPod touch to its factory settings...which means I will lose all my data...which I CANNOT do bc the videos of my son are some of his first words, first giggles, etc.
Now my iPod is stuck on a screen with a picture of a USB cord and an iTunes icon... and holding the power and push buttons down at the same time does nothing except bring up the apple icon for a moment and then it goes right back to the USB and iTunes icon
When I called Apple they said in order to talk to tech support I had to pay a fee of 19 dollars...which I think is kind of crap...I paid over 300 dollars for this and all I want is somebody to help me access my pics...I have done nothing wrong...this iPod was never dropped and never broke...I did the backup like I was supposed to and now I have an IPod touch that does nothing, and if my library of pics and videos are on my computer, I have no clue where or how to view them or back them up onto DVD....
I'm very upset and frustrated...please help!!!

You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

  • Restoring to Factory Settings and Restore Backup on an iPod Touch 4G

I have seen many posts regarding restoring iPods to factory settings and then loading a backup.  I have seen many posts about the "Other" storage space, too.  But I haven't found any that address my specific issue.  I'm mostly looking for some assurance that I won't lose all of my son's and daughter's hard work and the money we've spent on a couple games.
I have reviewed the Usage on my son's iPod via Settings < General < Usage.  I added up the storage space of all the apps.  It is 2.1 GB.  This is what the "Apps" category shows is being used.  The "Other" category shows it's using 2.3 GB.  It is only an 8 GB iPod, so this "Other" is eating up a ton of space.  He has no videos, only pictures he's taken (which isn't very many), apps (I keep those at a minimum), and music (which I also keep tight control over).  How do I find out what this "Other" is, and how do I get rid of it?  He doesn't have e-mail, and doesn't use the calendar, contacts, or notes.  I've read posts which say I probably have corrupt files and have to perform a factory restore, which wipes everything out, then restore again from the latest backup, with no guarantee that the "Other" will go away.  I've also read horror stories about the factory restore causing problems with the basic function of an iPod.  I called Apple Support, and the young man I spoke to asked around (because he didn't know) and said that the data while using an app (games like My Horse and Angry Birds) is stored in the "Apps" category.  How can I be sure of this?  He has a game we've put a lot of time, energy, and some money into.  I do not want this to be lost.  I'm assuming that backing up from the lastest backup of the iPod will prevent this, but how can I be sure that the game information isn't part of the "Other"?  If it is part of the "Other", and it doesn't get reloaded to the iPod from the backup restore, then it's lost.  If this happens, I will be very upset.  I'm frustrated and confused by all the conflicting information I've read.  Does anyone know where the game data is stored?  Does anyone know if the "Other" will be restored from the backup, and thus make the entire restore process pointless?
    Please help!!

As you likely read already, the "other" category consists of those items not included in the enumerated categories. That is why it is called other. What is in it depends a lot upon what different app place it it.
2.1 GB seems large enough to it also contain corrupted files.
Usually restoring from backup reduces the other. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is necessary since the larger other may be included in the backup.

  • Looking for a better way to backup end users

    Hello there.
Not sure if this the best forum for this post but here goes.
Last week my company had a break in and a couple of laptops got lifted. Not a big deal as I had backups of the machines on tape. It did take a while to recover the files though. During that time I got to thinking about a better way to backup and I am looking for any ideas of if this would work or not.
First quick overview. About 60 end users majority with laptops.
What I am thinking of doing is this. Take an xServe RAID configured in RAID 5, for redundancy and speed, and creating a shared folder on it for each of my end users. This way if they need to retrieve a file they can log in and will not have to call me. Then, this is where I need help, use some tool to copy all of their files at specified intervals into their folder, at least once a day. I am currently using Retrospect to backup everyone directly to tape and I could use that to do this but the only thing I do not like about Retrospect is it can only do one user at a time. With 60 users I have to start it pretty early in the day. I know copy files would be alot faster so I am not ruling it out. I was also thinking about using ChronoSync to accomplish this and then use Retrospect to backup the RAID to tape for long term storage. I am ruling out using Home directories on the xServe for my users because they are all laptops and are usually out of the office at least one day a week.
If anyone could offer some ideas of whether or not this is going to work or not or if you have other suggestions, any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
you could be using a combination of Mobile Accounts (for the settings of the ibook) and rsync (which is installed by default on 10.3 and 10.4), check man rsync for more info.

  • I plugged my iPhone for the first time to my computer, the iTunes screen came up and asked if I wanted to register the phone as a new phone or with the backup from my iPod. By accident, I clicked on the backup from my iPod, and I lost everything.

    Hi,
I plugged my iPhone for the first time to my computer. The iTunes screen automatically came up and asked if I wanted to register/set-up my iPhone as new phone or using the backup from my iPod. Without knowing what was going to happen, I clicked on the backup from my iPod and then I lost everything I already had in my phone: mostly contacts and pictures. Although afraid of the answer, is there a solution to retrieving the info, especially the pictures?
    Thank you!

by any chance did you do a back up to iCloud? if not there isn't a way to retrieve lost info with out a back up.

  • Is there any way to transfer photos from ipod touch (2nd generation

Is there any way to transfer photos from ipod touch (2nd generation & OS is 4.2.1) to PC? I am struggling a lot. The OS cannot be upgradable beyond 4.2.1
I am wondering if there could be many other ways to transfer the photos like:
    1. with the help of any android app
    2. ipod touch to iphone/ipod latest version
    3. any 3rd party free softwares (there are paid 3rd party softwares but I dont want to invest)
I did try some of the options:
    1. I could emailed only 6 photos in one email (I have almost 800 photos and would be time consuming.
    2. I'm trying to access my google account on my ipod but it keeps coming up with "oops! your browser seems to have cookies disabled..." My cookies are not disabled. Safari is the only browser for ipod touch and could not be able to installed not only any new browser but also any iphone apps. Updates for the existing apps not possible at all. So this option of uploading the photos on google drive is ruled out.
Anybody is there to help me out? Sorry for such a long inventory.
    Thank you!

If they are in the iPod' Saved Photos album then:
iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
If they were synced to the iPod you need a third-party program like TouchCopy or PhoneView

  • HT1391 Is there a way apple can block an iPod if it's been lost or stolen? It's not connected to iCloud

Is there a way apple can block an iPod when it's not connected to iCloud? If I unregistered it would it wipe the iPod of my details? As my sisters iPod got stolen and is all linked to my account.

No, unless Find My iPod was enabled on it before it was stolen then there isn't any way for you to try and locate and/or remotely wipe it - and that will only work if it's connected to a network and the device hasn't already been wiped and/or Find My iPod disabled on it.
If it was stolen then you should report it to the police. You should also change your iTunes account password, your email account passwords, and any passwords that you'd stored on websites/emails/notes etc.

  • Best way to backup 30gb library to disk

    Hey guys,
What is the best way to backup a 30gb library to disc? I'd like to burn my library to dvd's and store away from my house. Wasn't sure if you just create an album and burn to disc or what?
    Thanks in advance!

As Patrick says I'm backing up the iPhoto Library in my Pictures Folder. This contains everything: Photos, albums, keywords, events etc.
The most simple way to do it is to simply drag the Library icon to the external HD. Let it copy over. However this can be tedious when you back up regularly, so I use a back up utility that does incremental back ups: That is the first time, it copies the entire library, thereafter it simply keeps the back up up-to-date with the Library. I use DejaVu for that. Chronosync is another app that will do it. There are many others. Search on MacUpdate.
FWIW my full back up schedule runs like this:
My Library lives on my iMac.
It’s Backed up to two external hard disks every day. These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected. For this job I use DejaVu because it makes a simple back up that is clear and can be tested easily without doing an full restore.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. Personally I use SmugMug but there are many options including flickr. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size, or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you will need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a restore.
    Regards
    TD

  • Best way to backup your partition?

What is the best way to back up a partition? /dev/sda1 is windows and sda2 is Archlinux. Say if I wanted to reformat sda2 with an new filesystem, but continue to use the exact same installation of Archlinux that I've tailored everywhere possible (I would have to change fstab of course), what would be the best way to backup all files with compression while keeping ownerships and rights? (note: speed is favoured over high compression here though, but any compression would be nice)
    All advices are welcome

    Fackamato,
I regularly backup using 'rsync'. It has the advantage of only copying changed/new files, eventually deleting deleted
    ones.
You can use a mounted NAS, or an internal partition as target. If the NAS also has 'rsync', you can also use it in client/server mode.
F.e., on a local internal partition:
    rsync -av --delete --delete-excluded --exclude="/sys/**" --exclude="/proc/** " --exclude="/backup/" / /backup
/backup being a mounted backup partition
'rsync' is most useful if you regularly backup, but has some interest also in one shot copies: if for some reason
the copy fails, f. e. out of space, when you solve the problem and restart, it will only copy what it needs to.
For your particular case, if you have a spare internal partition with enough space (or make one fiddling with gparted),
    you could:
mount /dev/sda3 /backup (sda3 being your new partition)
    rsync -av --delete --delete-excluded --exclude="/sys/**" --exclude="/proc/** " --exclude="/backup/" / /backup
    Change /etc/fstab on sda3.
Add the necessary lines to menu.lst (I suppose you are using Grub) to boot from sda3.
So you can test that everything works before destroying sda2.
