A way to limit overdrive in vocals?

There are moments when I sung to close to the microphone and the volume suddenly increases dramatically, is there a way to keep the volume between a certain low and a certain high so theres no drastic increases in volume?

A dynamics compressor can control the dynamic range of your vocals.
If your recording doesn't clip you can apply the compressor after recording, as a plugin. If you get clipping, try to decrease the gain at your interface or the preamp to avoid this. If this doesn't help you can insert a hardware compressor into your signal path before the analog to digital conversion happens. This is often done.
However, compression has severe effects on the sound and atmosphere of a recording and cannot be undone. So limit the application of compression to the absolute necessary during recording.
That said, you should learn how to work your microphone. A good microphone technique allows you to compensate for the level changes and is something I expect from a good vocal performer. For studio recordings but also for live performance it's essential to be able to play the microphone like a musical instrument. If you're serious about singing you should invest some time in learning that and you won't need a recording compressor.

  • Is there a way to limit the frequency of the "autosaving drafts" feature in Mac Mail on Lion?

    Using Mail Version 5.0 (1244.2/1244.3)
On MacBook Pro with Lion 10.7.1
Wondering if Is there a way to limit the frequency of the "autosaving drafts" feature in Mac Mail on Lion?
Looked all thru preferences and googled the crap out of this and can't seem to find the answer I want.
Basically, I have my mailbox behaviors set up exactly the way I want them. (ie deleted messages get saved to my "Trash" folder on the server) I do not think I should have to change them, but because of the autosave feature saving almost every 3 characters typed, I have an over abundance of versions saved in my Trash folder. This problem would be solved were there a preference somewhere I could select to save drafts "manually only" or "opened messages save when quitting" or something along those lines.
Is this a preference setting already that I am missing?
I would settle for a rule, just not sure what perameters should be set for this to work.

Typically a server has a settable parameter to limit concurrent connections. Check the server's documentation.

  • Is there any way to limit purchases on my iPad

    Hello world
MY question is simple: Is there any way to limit ALL purhases (not only in-app purchases) on my iPad.
I've tried to assign a debit card with a small amount of money but it did not help. I'm still able to make purchases, their cost is in "pending" state(a red sum in iTunes with info that my card could not been authorized) and thay will be debited from the account as soon as i refill my account

Remov the card details and credit your account with a small amount by means of an iTunes gift card.

  • In Numbers, is there a way to limit the number of characters in a cell?

    Hi,
New to communities, so I apologize for the length of this question.
I have exported a spreadsheet from one source and am opening it using Numbers.  In one column - lets say column C - the list contains 35 characters.
I am trying to import this spreadsheet into another program which will only allow 30 characters to be in column C.
I have been unable to find a way to limit column C to 30 characters so I am able to import it into the new program. The field will contain numbers and letters.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

    ricochetron,
you can place Jerry's suggested formula in any column convenient for you.  If column D is unused then do the following:
enter the fomula in cell D1.  Shorthand for this is:
    D1=left(C1, 30)
    then hit the enter key.
now select D1 and copy using the menu item "Edit > Copy".  Now select the whole column by clicking the letter "D" in the column reference tab:
now paste using the menu item "Edit > Paste" to fill the formula to every selected cell in the column:
You can now copy the limited text from column D and paste as needed.  If you paste to another cell or table you should use the menu item "Edit > Paste Values"

  • Best way to limit results from a query.

I need to limit the number of results returned from the database to the first x rows. What I need is a database independant way to achieve this - i.e. I can't use LIMIT, TOP, etc. in my query.
My question therefore is does statment.setMaxRows(x) restrict my results at the database level or my application's view to the database? I.e. will the complete SELECT * run within the database but the first x will be returned to the resultset, which could be quite a performance drain at db level. Or will this have the same effect as running a query SELECT TOP X FROM... which will be a much quicker query to run?
    Any help greatly appreciated!

The best, and only fool proof way to limit results (rows, columns) from a query, and not waste database resources is to code your query so it only returns the rows and columns that you need. That might mean providing date ranges, sequence number ranges and all other WHERE criteria that can be used to filter the data to exactly what you need.
There are ways to limit what is available to your Java program, but in most cases, the entire SQL must be completed before any results can be returned. The simplest example is; using the SORT command to get the data into the order you require, will first require that all rows be made available to the sort. The fact that you only want the top 5 rows doesn't matter to the DBMS because it cannot give them to you incrementally.
Focus on getting your SQL as efficient as possible. If the SQL runs efficiently, you can use almost any of the JDBC commands to limit, list, cursor forward and backward, etc, without regard to their overhead.

  • Is there any other way to  limit the data a user can see

    We are using Discoverer 10.2.xxx
We are running it against an Oracle applications database but we do not have Discoverer integrated with the apps. I have created database users for discoverer and granted access to the data at the db level.
We have about 40 salesreps and we only want each rep to see their own data. We have a high turn over with the reps
For now, I have created the row level security in that folder in my eul. If the username = XXXX then Salesrep = XXXXX
    OR
If username = YYYY then DSM = YYYY
etc.. This goes on for about 40 users We have 3 levels of "users" - Salesrep, DSM or RSM (District or Region sales manager)
These users are setup in my apps and I can write a database procedure to select their salesrep name based on their username.
Is there any other way to limit the data that the salesreps can see ?
Possibly with a stored procedure some way?
    Thanks
    Angie

At a previous client's, I had created a system not too unlike what you're describing.
Basically, I created an Oracle table that stored information concerning the salesperson as in Oracle Apps the data was not reliable for what they were doing (ie: with adding Apps modules, sometimes salesperson data was there, but with say, CRM, it was in another place, etc.).
So, since this table was going to be used for driving everything about a salesperson (commissions, who they report to, when they started, territory, when / if they moved territories and/or manager, etc, etc.) I put lots of good stuff in it that would make life easier for them.
The end user in charge of all this had was given a Form to add, edit, delete all this good stuff and they were happy.
When it came time for security, it worked like a charm in that I used the concept of the BIS views where a user has an apps id associated to them and all data was filtered by that id. All I really had to do was to create this view that simply filtered data to that user's id. Then whenever I had a Discoverer report for salespeople, managers, etc. I just made sure the folder used had a join to this filtering view and I chose an item from the filtering view and all worked fine. All Discoverer reports only returned row level information for the salesperson who ran it.
Likewise, the same Oracle table was queried by another security view that only brought back the same IDs for the salespeople associated to each manager. When this simple view was joined to any sales Discoverer folder (and used in Disco), it limited all data to the salespeople the manager was responsible for.
Obviously this is just an overview and would take pages to explain, but essentially, if you can associate some kind of unique ID to each salesperson (I used the one returned in BIS views when someone logs into Apps, but you could just assign a different in your case), then you can create a view that filters to that id. Then when that view is brought into the EUL and joined to any other folder in the sales area (and you choose a column from the security view), you'll have what you're referring to - row level security for all salespeople and managers.
When it works - it sure does look impressive.

  • Java.lang.OutOfMemoryError -- Is there a way to limit BPEL instances number

    Hi All,
My BPEL process is using JMS adapter to read the JMS queue. Whenever a new message arrives, a new BPEL instance is created. However, when the message gets bigger and multiple messages arrive at queue at the same time, the OC4J gets java OutOfMemory (heap space) error and was forced shutdown. I'm wondering if there's any way to limit the BPEL instance created, say, only one at a time, and the messages would be processed in sequence. Would this be a good way to not use so much heap at one time? Is there a way to limit the BPEL instance created?
    Thanks for your help!
    Michelle

Take a look at how to configure Jms polling interval (talks about a property that you can set to introduce a delay in between dequeues). That might be of some help to start with.
It is supposed to work exactly the way you want it i.e the activation agent does a dequeue and hand off to bpel engine (which creates an instance and uses the same thread to run as much of that instance as possible i.e till the first dehydration point). So, if your process has a dehydration point right at the beginning (which could be due to invocation of another async process, or wait or ...), you could very well see this thread go right back and process the next available message.
I believe this is a generic problem that is not necessarily jms adapter specific. One way would be to split up your process into three processes:
    1. "Kickoff" process which contains just a "receive" associated with the activation agent followed by an invocation of a "Controller" process
    2. "Controller" process which checks for the provided input as to which process it needs to invoke, and then goes on to check how many instances of that process are currently running; if this number is below a certain threshold, kick off the main process providing it the necessary payload gotten from the "KickOff" process
    3. "Main" process which is same as your current process except that it is a typical async process without the adapter "receive" partner link
So, the idea being that for any process where you want to introduce a control-flow mechanism, you would split it into #1 and #3 above. Have one generic Controller process, which caters to all of the processes.
Would be interested in learning if others have solved this in a generic way.

  • Is there a way to Limit the number of guest accounts a Sponsor can create from the sponsor portal?

    Hello,
I am trying to find a way to limit the number of guest accounts a Sponsor can create from the portal. I am running ISE 1.2 and I am finding it difficult to limit the number of guests a sponsor can create.

Interesting feature that unfortunately is currently not possible. I also don't think this is a feature that will be offered in the highly anticipated v1.3. I would recommend that you reach to your Cisco team and request this feature.

  • Any way to limit memory which XSLT processor uses?

Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.2.0.3.0 - 64bit Production
    PL/SQL Release 11.2.0.3.0 - Production
    CORE     11.2.0.3.0     Production
TNS for Linux: Version 11.2.0.3.0 - Production
NLSRTL Version 11.2.0.3.0 - ProductionWe use the xmltype.transform method to transform XSLT. We got oodles of memory (25Gb assigned to Oracle) but we do use a lot of that......
Is there a way to limit the amount of memory that the XSLT engine uses so as to avoid out of memory errors?
    Errors in file /ora/oracle/diag/rdbms/prod01/PROD01/trace/PROD01_j001_16149.trc:
    ORA-27102: out of memory
Linux-x86_64 Error: 12: Cannot allocate memoryThe XML file was just under 20Gb in size. I regularly see 10Gb xslt transformations using around 2Gb ram (via the top command on linux). I have no visibility to what the memory consumption was the time of the failure.

Probably most of the heavy consumption is PGA related.
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28274/memory.htm#i49320
Have a look at the AWR history views concerning memory consumption. ADDM, ASH, AWR etc should give you more insight. See also the awr/addm/ash/-rpt.sql scripts in $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin on the database server. You (officially) would need Diagnostic en Tuning pack licenses though, so be warned (even for "touching" those views). Probably the heavy consumption of memory is or (wrong) storage related or inefficient code...

  • Way to limit image size on uploaded images?

Hello! Is there a way as administrator that you can limit image size for uploaded images? (Like in Contribute) Thanks so much

    Hello mikkiblaes,
There isn't a way to limit the size of an image that is uploaded in InContext Editing, but there is a built-in file size limitation of 2MB. As the InContext Editing Browser help states:
Once you've inserted the media element, you can resize the asset by dragging the resize handles around it, or by changing the width and height values in the Media toolbar. (Make sure the asset is selected when you do this.) To maintain width and height proportions when you resize, make sure the lock option is selected. (It's selected by default).
This type of feature has been requested a couple of times:

  • HT4489 Is there a way to limit (specify) what is shared when you share a contact?

I noticed when I share a contact that most information in the contact is shared.  This is not what I want.  I would only like to share the basic information like telephone numbers and addresses.  I do not want to share my notes and additional information that I have accumulated.  Is there a way to limit or specify exactly what you want to share?

This isn't a way to limit what is shared, except to create a new contact to share that excludes this information.

    Hi.
Is there a way to limit the size of the emails I receive?   Can I set my iPhone4s to only download headers or set a limit to the size?   I can't see anything in the settings.
    Thanks,

My Gmail downloads only small embedded pictures. For videos and other big files I have to tap to download and this is a temp download. So you don't have any problem I thing. You can Delete the account-restart-add account back from time to time.

  • Is there a way to limit the size of the page preview cache?

Overall I think that the page preview function of Safari is really great. But I noticed today that Safari was becoming slow to close down, and I cleared the page previews with the "Reset Safari" function, and over 1 GB of cache was cleared up. I had no idea that that much disk space could be taken up by the page previews.
Is there a way to limit the size of the Safari Page Preview cache to, say, 500MB?

Sorry, you can't limit the size of that item; you can either delete it, or disable it completely (which will also disable Top Sites and Cover Flow for Safari).
