A whole host of problems.

All of sudden, I'm experiencing multiple problems with my MacBook Pro:
1) When I open PhotoBooth, the window doesn't appear. iSight turns on, and if I click "Take Picture" on the menu bar it does, but I can't see the picture because there's no window.
2) Video chat no longer works. In AIM, when I click on the video chat icon, nothing even happens. No iSight, no nothing.
3) Word isn't working. When I attempt to type, absolutely nothing happens. This occurs both in old and new documents.
4) Some of the icons in my menu bar are only half appeared. For example, I see the outline of my battery, but no indication of how full it is (it's typically black or red inside the battery, and I no longer see that). Also, I can see the "hands" of Time Machine, but not the clock itself.
5) The last time I shut it down, the start-up time was scarily long. Minutes went by before anything happened, and that's completely unusual.
I ran Sophos, and a threat was detected and cleaned up, but I don't know how to proceed from here. I'm afraid to turn off my computer for fear that it won't reboot, and my external hard drive is nowhere to be found (I just moved), so I haven't backed up any of my data. Clearly I need to find my external/buy a new one, but where else do I go from here? Do I take it in, or is there something else I can do?

First off the virus checker stuff you are using is useless and worthless and generally will muck up your system. What had you done recently before all the issues happened?

  • "Perform whole database Recovery" Host Credentials problem

    Hello,
I have minimal knowledge of the Oracle database system but currently I need to recover a Oracle 10G database on a Windows Server 2003 Standard edition.
Im trying to use the Oracle Enterprise Manager. Im logged into the instance with SYS as SYSDBA. On the Perform Recovery page there are fields for "Host Credentials" Could someone explain to me what credentials EM is asking for. Whatever account I try to use EM gives a Validation Error stating
Error - Connection to host as user test failed: ERROR: Wrong password for user
Ive tried both local and Active Directory accounts that have full admin rights on the Host machine. With the AD account I tried using just the user name and allso domain\username. The page asks for "To perform recovery, supply operating system login credentials to access the target database." which sounds like the account has to have both access to the host and the database. Does that mean I have to create an external account in the instance? I even tried that but im not sure I configured it properly.

Well found the solution. Atleast to this problem. Had to give the account "Log on as batch job" rights under Local Policy -> User Rights Assignment

  • Host migration problems

I am in the process of migrating my 12 websites from mobileme to a new hosting service. Using iWeb's FTP option I've been able to publish all the sites except two, which at the very end (once all the files have been transferred) generate a publish error. When I check the server, all the files are there and it all seems to work. The problem is that, due to the error, all the pages turn red when iWeb reopens. Thus, further modifications to even one page means republishing the whole site time and again. Any suggestions on how to solve this? Thanks!

You will have to publish the entire site to the new server in order to get the site icons to turn blue.  Is that what you did?
Since I don't use iWeb to upload to the server I don't have that problem.  I publish my site to a folder on my hard drive designated just for that particular site and then use an ftp client like the free  Cyberduck to upload to the server.  As long as the instructions in this tutorial are followed CD can determine which files are the new or newly modified ones and upload only those: #2 - Uploading Only Those Newly Published or Edited Files When Using a 3rd Party FTP Client

  • Whole slew of problems with my iPod and I'm about to go nuts..

My 1.5 year old 4th generation iPod has been having issues recently after having the same issues in the past. Freezing, sad iPod icon, etc.
It was hooked up to my computer when all of a sudden it said that it was corrupted (it was fine before). So I went to restore it in iTunes, and it couldn't. I disconnected and tried to restore it, it didn't work. I tried to force it into disk mode, and I can get the Apple to come up, but then it makes a weird buzzing/clicking noise and the sad iPod face comes back up.
I've been having funky problems with iTunes too, though nothing like with the iPod. Is it worth sending in the be serviced? It's too old to be covered under its warrenty, and I'm a poor college student (it was a present to myself two summers ago for working all through summer instead of taking a vacation) and I need to be sure that the cost of getting it repaired is worth it.
4th generation (I'm pretty sure)   Windows XP   Makes a weird whirring/clicking noise, though there aren't any loose parts inside.

Thanks for the link, I tried a couple more things in there and managed to force it into disk mode only to have it fail on me again. Now I'm unable to get past the Apple icon without running into a sad iPod or a folder with an exclamation point, it likes to switch it up.
I think there's something wrong with the hard drive, as the link says I should hear it spinning when it turns on. Mine starts, but clicks and stops as it misses something and the cycle repeats.
Since it's out of warranty, there isn't a whole lot I can do as far as cost goes, but I will definitely explore all options before buying a new one.
    Thanks again!

  • Host String Problem

Hi everyone, i searched the forum and found same problem with me but i did not work for me. The problem is i cannot connect my sql plus. i enter my username and password then it asks me gor host string but when i type it and enter "ok" it says "TNS Listener does not currentl know of service requested in connect descriptor. i looked at my tnsnames.ora file and is exactly like this.
    # tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = PLSExtProc)
    (PRESENTATION = RO)
    CSE348 =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Canavar)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = cse348)
So what shoul i type to connect sql plus?

Given the tnsnames.ora content, the following needs to be entered for sqlplus in order to have it use that connection string in the file:
sqlplus scott/tiger@CSE348As you have not qualified the alias with a domain, it will default to "+.world+" as far as I recall. If the default domain in your local sqlnet.ora differs, than that default will be used to find alias CSE348 in the local tnanmes.ora file. So make sure that you do not mix default and explicit domain names. Rather specify a default domain in sqlnet.ora and use the same domain for defining full qualified domain name TNS aliases in tnsnames.ora.
As for the error - the Listener receives a connection request for a service called cse348 - and no such service has registered with it. You can check the known services of the listener using the "+lsnrctl services+" command on the server.
Often in this case, it is easier to request a specific database instance using its system identifier, or SID. In which case you can change your connection string for the alias to use a SID as follows:
    CSE348 =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = Canavar)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVER = DEDICATED)
          (SID = cse348)
)This assumes that the SID is cse348. The default SID is for example orcl. SIDs like dev and prod are also often used.

  • Host Directory Problem

Using Dreamweaver CS4, trying to upload first web site, having a problem
when I put public_html in host directory...because dreamweaver then inserts
a /    , therefore looks like public_html/ and the file will not upload onto the public register.
Have asked my host company for help...but they keep saying I should drop the /  and then
everything will OK....but I'm not typing in  slash / ..........dreamweaver is doing it itself.
    Can anybody help please?
    Thankyou

Are you sure your ftp settings point to the right folder on the hosting server?
For instance if I have an ftp adress called ftp://www.mydomain.com but the root folder for my website is wwwroot I should set that directory in the ftp dialog of the website settings.
So the ftp settings of my site will be something like:
    FTP server : ftp://www.mydomain.com
    rootfolder:      wwwroot
    password: mypasword
    login name: my_loginname

  • Host Credential Problem in Oracle 10g on Windows

    Hi,
I have another problem that is really bothering me. I
have tried using Oracle database 10g on Windows XP and
it works fine till you shut down and attempt to
restart (or any administrative task)with the EM. It
asks for the Database and Host credentials but always
rejects the Host credentials. Now because i only have
the Administrator as the OS user, i try to give this
user and it's password and it still doesn't accept
    that.
What could be the problem??? I infact have realized
that this problem is NOT there if i use 10.1.0 on Red
Hat Linux AS 3 because for the host credentials i use
the OS user Oracle and the password (Owner of Oracle
    Installation)and it goes through fine.
In Windows, what should i do to rectify this problem.
Or is it a bug with Oracle on Windows. Or where should
i get the relevant Host credentials Oracle requests on
Windows or should i create a user??? Please
    HELP!!!!!!!!!!

  • Host name problem

    Hi,
whenever I excute the web application ,it is not showing the result.I found that there is  a problem in configuring of host name by using the function module "RSBB_URL_PREFIX_GET".The value for E_URL_SERVER is in the format  ls3022 rather than ls3022.wdf.sap-ag.de.
So it has the only host name but not the domain (including the extension). How can i change this value to complete host name(including the domain).

  • Host credential problem on XP Pro

    Hi everybody.
Maybe I'm kicking in open doors here regarding the problem with host credentials in EM, but I think I found something.
As I have read in other posts I added my user account to the "Logon as batch job" in "Local security settings". When I add my user name there it gets registered as [domain]\[user name] since I'm on a domain.
But what I found is that the credentials must be supplied as [domain]\[user name] in EM as well or it won't work (you get the "wrong password for user" error.
Hope it helps someone a least. :)

Yes, very true..if it's a domain user, you will have to specify domain\username

  • G5 having a host of problems after 10.4.8 update

Does anyone know how or if there is way to go back to 10.4.7 now that I'm running 10.4.8?
My G5 use to crash at startup about 30-40% of the time right out of the box. Yes I have one the (Late 2004) 1.8GHz G5's. These problems continued until Apple finally released the firmware update. This fixed everything. I recently upgraded to OS 10.4.8 (from 10.4.7) and now all my original problems are back. Crashes at startup just as you described (does this about 30% of the time) plus I have a host of new problems. iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, no longer open no matter what I do. Absolutely no response, the icon in the dock bounces once then nothing happens. When I attempt to check for software updates, again nothing happens. My internet browsing is suddenly worse(browser gets hung up on the same weather pages I have always visited). I also noticed that the energy saver panel in my preferences is completely blank (no words, no options, blank page). If there's any way to go back to 10.4.7 I would definitely like to try it, but I don't know where to begin.
If anyone else is experiencing similar problems please post a reply (in detail)so we can try to establish some commonality in the problems.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Get yourself a copy of Tiger and the latest iLife. The Tiger upgrade over Panther disks are not as good.
Backup all your data, music, User/Library/Mail and Safari folders.
Write down all your network settings, passwords and vital data to speed the rebuild.
Hold c and boot off the new Tiger disk and select Disk Utility from the menu. Select Erase with Zero option your boot drive. This will take some time.
When finished Quit and install Tiger, setup (avoid migration assistant) and immediatly Software Update until clear. Repair permissions.
Get yourself a external hard drive and a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner. Disk Utlity Erase w/Zero option the new external. Enable "make bootable" in CCC prefs and clone your fresh new boot drive to the external. Hold option to boot from it to check it out. Reboot from internal boot and disconnect.
Continue to setup the new internal boot with app installs from original sources. If you need performance, keep your non-secure user files on another internal drive, keeping the boot drive less than 50% filled.
Clone the new stable boot drive to the external occassionally, always repair permissions before and after a clone. Always Zero any new drive one time or in the case of a security issue for more reliability.
Check your drive makers sites for hard drive driver updates for Tiger.

  • Host Command Problems on 9i Unix

I am using web froms 9i running on a Unix server with 9iasr2. I am trying to manipulate files on the server not the client. I have tried:
    host('rm -f /mypath/filename.txt')
    host('rm -f /mypath/filename.txt',NO_SCREEN)
    host('touch /mypath/filename.txt')
    host('touch /mypath/filename.txt', NO_SCREEN)
    host('mv /mypath/file1.txt /mypath/file2.txt')
The file I am trying to delete is one that was transfered using the webutil file transfer.
I have tried to check the status with:
    IF NOT Form_Success THEN
         Message('Error -- Message not sent.');
    ELSE
         Message('Message Sent.');
    END IF;
    I always get back 'Error...'
The directories have permission open to everyone. Therefore I would of expected no problems with doing a touch to create a file.
    Any ideas?

Thanks Ino. That was it, the full path for the unix command itself was missing. I knew it was something simple. =)

  • Register Website Host Directory Problems

I'm trying to register a website for ICE and cannot make it
past the Register Website dialog box. The site does not have a host
directory and in DW I've successfully uploaded all the include
files and created the templates, pages, etc. However, while trying
to register the site, I keep getting an error message when testing
the connection "Cannot write to the specified Host Directory" Why
would this be different from what I'm already using to connect with
    DW?

    Hello Leslie,
I'm sorry you're having problems... I can see that the
InContext Editing files are uploaded to your server. Are both of
these domains using the same web hosting provider?
Have you tried checking or un-checking the Use Passive FTP
checkbox in the Configure Website dialog box in InContext Editing?
When you attempt to register either of the sites, are you
    omitting the www. ? (e.g.,
    http://www.jwconsultinginc.org/
    or just
    http://jwconsultinginc.org/)
When you go to one of the websites, press Ctrl+E and login to
edit the page, can you register the website from here? (Click
Configure Website next to Your Account).
Do you have any custom 404 Page Not Found error pages enabled
with your web host? If so, please try disabling them.
    Best regards,
    Corey

  • BusinessObjects Enterprise HOST NAME PROBLEMS

As we can find in other posts, we know that BO has problems with underscore in the host name.
I read in some posts that the problem can be solved by writing the IP address instead of the host name when we use Infoview or whatever we need.
I've done two BO enterprise installations in two different Vitual Machines (made with Virtual PC).
I know that SAP guarantees that BO works fine only on VMware platform with the host name without underscores.
The host on the first Virtual Machine was named correctly, but after the installation I changed it inserting an underscore; after this the Infoview login interface didn't work. So I tried to write the IP address and It worked properly.
Trying to use Designer and Translation Manager I had  only to use the IP address instead of the current host name.
The host on the second Virtual Machine was named with an underscore, and after the installation I launched the Infoview login interface that didn't work. Again I tried to write the IP address and It worked properly, but in this case I couldn't launch the Designer and I couldn't import the universe from cms with the Translation Manager!!!
I got this exception opening the Designer:

I got this exception importing the universe from cms in the Translation Manager:
    [repo_proxy 37] UniverseFacade::importUniverse - (Helpers::InfoStore::ObjectFileHandle::extractContent) Local file copy has failed Errore del File Repository Server: La directory C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Dati applicazioni\Business Objects\Business Objects 12.0\Universes\@l3_dwhsrv_6400\Folder 95/Universes\ richiesta u00E8 inesistente.(hr=#0x80042a4a)
    I'd like to know if:
    1) Is this a problem because of the Virtual PC virtual machine?
    2) Is this a problem because of the BO problem with underscore in the host name?
    and
    3) How can I resolve this problem without changing the host name?
    Thank you for your attention,
    Giorgio

    Hi Agliano,
changing the Hostname of a Server after BO is installed is a bad idea ! The WAR files for your Tomcat are in some sort "hardcoded".
I would suggest re- deploying your war files on the Tomcat would fix this issue. Check SAP Note - 1308027 for assistance.

  • KT4VL USB Host controller Problems

I have  a KT4VL (MS-67212) and am having problems with the USB Host controller.  I am running Win 98SE.  This happens wether or not I have any USB devices installed.  I have taken out all installed add on cards and tried and still get the same problem.
If I reboot the computer with the USB Host Controller installed, it won't boot.   It goes into safe mode where I can uninstall the USB host controller.   I can then reboot fine.
Every time I reboot though the hardware detector pops up saying that I need to install the drivers for the USB host controller.  If I install them, then  everything works fine, all USB devices are found and and function perfectly.  That is, until I reboot and it goes to safe mode.
It has the 1.1 bios in it.  I didn't install a floppy drive in this PC so I can't flash it at this time, if that is what I need to do.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    KTGBP

I have a Satellite C855D-S5320.  I had my hard drive crash. I installed windows7 64 bit.  All the drivers work except the USB Controller. just the Usb ports on the right side of the unit do not work. one of them is a USB 3.  I tried all the driver updates off your web site, I tried windows driver search, I tried driver Genius program too.  I also ran a diognostic on the motherboard, it shows all working fine.  I upgraded the bios and checked settings there as well. Please help if you can, Tom

  • Host Credentials problem

I am trying to 'Export to Export file' some individual schemas. I will take this information to a test/development server and import it there to work on.
When prompted for the Host Credentials I have problems. I am logged on as the Administrator of the domain and I am using these same credentials here only I get one of 2 different error messages.
    1) When I use the credentials of
    Username: Administrator
    Password: admin_password
    I get
-- Examine and correct the following errors, then retry the operation:
Error - ERROR: Failed to create command process
    2) When I use the credentials of
    Username: DOMAIN/Administrator
    Password: admin_password
    I get
-- Examine and correct the following errors, then retry the operation:
Error - ERROR: Wrong password for user
This is on Windows 2003 server.
    Any suggestions would be apprecitated.

Ok. Could you check if the DBConsole Service is started as a Domain User or as a Local User.
My guess is that yoiu are facing the same problem as this thread. Check the solution to it. If it is not the same, then let me know.
DBconsole (on Windows) issues after changing to run as domain user
