A whole new meaning to "skipping" songs

My nano does this thing periodically where I can be browsing through songs, when randomly, out of the blue, it starts hurdling through songs.
None of the songs play, it just skips through them. Sometimes, the skipping is slow, sometimes it's fast.
If it goes slowly, it begins to "play" the song, but no sound comes from the ear buds.
No matter what I press, play, menu, forward or backward, nothing stops it. I tried resetting the darned thing, but even that didn't work at one point in time. I tried just letting it run it's course and seeing if it would stop, but it just seemed to go on and on in a loop.
The time that reseting it did not work, it just stopped at random on a song and started playing.
What can I do the next time it does this? Or how can I fix this, so that it doesn't happen again?

  • ***New*** iTunes 7 skipping songs problem (2-3 seconds of play only)

    Hey all,
Long post here, but I hope you'll bear with me, as I reckon this is something of a new fault with iTunes 7.
Found a bug with iTunes 7 on my iPod Video which I don't see any references to from anyone else. (I presume I'm not alone, but I've Googled the **** out of this problem and no one else seems to specifically have it...)
Basically, with iTunes 6.0.5, all was well. For putting songs ONTO the iPod, I've been using Anapod Explorer for well over a year, again without any problems. (I don't usually keep much of a music library on the PC - it all gets stored on DVD-burned MP3 discs, so there is a backup, just not on the machine. For that reason, and for personal preferences with iTunes' own way of updating, I find Anapod's copy and paste approach to updating the iPod to be much handier.)
So, long story short, a few weeks ago I upgraded to iTunes 7. Left it a while longer than usual because I was burned by an earlier iPod software upgrade which stopped me from playing divx/xvid videos created using iPod Videora Converter - on that occassion, I had to pull the firmware BACK to what it was when I first got the iPod. Thankfully, whatever bug was in 1.1 in relation to home-created videos is no longer there, and 1.2 works perfectly well. The brightness feature is the main reason I risked changing the software again.
So you would have thought all would be well with the songs, then? Unfortunately not. iTunes 7, slick and all as it appears, seems to create a situation whereby, once I disconnect from iTunes, ALL songs suddenly only play for 1-3 seconds before STOPPING, with the 'playing' bar jumping all the way to the last second and holding there. Skip forward to the next song, and same thing!
This cannot be an issue in relation to Anapod, as it never affected iTunes seeing the songs updated to the iPod via that method before. What iTunes 7 does seem to have done, though, is prevent songs being played in the normal way by introducing this frustrating 'start, 3-seconds, stop' issue. It will eventually go to the next song after about 1-2 minutes of silence, and then the process repeats. Throughout all of this, the songs do play normally within iTunes 7(0.2) so it is not a hard drive or corrupt file problem.
I should say that this is not crucial or a desperate situation, as I've already found a way to fix it. Moving BACK to iTunes 6.0.5 (or any 6.x.x version) and playing a few songs within iTunes, and then disconnecting will miraculously return all the songs to the usual full playing ability.
Unfortunately for Apple, this means (for the second time in a year) that I cannot update to their latest release as it ruins the playability of my iPod. I would like the extra features in iTunes 7 (for playing songs on the computer - as I said I never used it for updating anyway), but this latest glitch means I'll be using the more stable and reliable 6 for some time to come.
What I'm curious from the good folks on the forums here is to see if any of you have heard of this exact problem until now, and if so, what solution anyone had to get around it (possibly including actually keeping iTunes 7!)
Thanks for the help. Sorry for the long post. It all seemed kind of necessary when I see so many posts about 'skipping songs' but never about 2-3 seconds worth of play (most usually say they get more than half way.)

I've update the subject of your post to more accurately reflect the issue.

  • New iPod randomly skipping songs

I got a new iPod classic 120GB, replacing my old 60gb. I loaded it up with my songs and stuff, and started using it, but after a while it skipped to next song halfway through a song. This happened a few times, and once the ipod even restarted itself (after displaying a low quality 8bit colour apple logo image). I then restored my iPod, and checked for latest software, and it seemed to be better for a while, but it just skipped a song again.
I'm pretty sure all the song files are mp3, but maybe some AACs. Songs that skipped played fine other times. iPod hasn't been dropped since I got it... I guess I have to take it to an apple center for warranty... Does anyone elses new 120GB skip songs?
    Thanks
    Rodger

Iv had my 120GB Classic since early September when they came out and iv noticed that it skips on a few song s but not many, though I do tend to listen to the same small selection of music! In my experience it has skipped at the exact same point in a particular song. as someone else has said on here, i can fast search through the song past that point and it will play the rest no problem. its like there is a speciffic marker in the song that it doesn't like. Pretty stupid if you ask me!
However, it happened to a Lost Prophets album first and the only way i found round it was to re-record the album in and its worked fine since. But since then iv found more songs that do it. Its really frustrating!!!!
I might look at taking it back then as i thought it was just my music. I didn't realise anyone else was having the same problems!
    We shall see...

I got an ipod touch 32GB for Christmas (December 2014). It was playing perfectly with Bluetooth on stereo as well as with mp3 cable to a portable speaker for about a week or so. Now it wants to skip my songs halfway through.  I see that this is an issue with way too many ipod owners....Sadly I see no fixes or solutions on these sites. Oh, and PS ---it won't even let me update the software update that it keeps telling me t

  • New MBP iTunes Skipping Songs

Just picked up a new MBP. Downloaded music library from external HD and noticed that itunes is jumping to the next track before the current one is finished playing.
This dosen't happen on all albums, just a few. So I assume it's not the MBP HD but rather a few corrupted files in the library-which have never given me a problem before.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

Post your query on the iTunes forum.  You will have a wider audience and one directed at those who are familiar with the application.
    Ciao.
    I never had that happen.

  • Is it possible to copy over track settings to a whole new song in Garageband?

    Hi there
There maybe a work around for this if its not possible but here goes.........
I have multiple tracks (vocals, live played guitars, live played bass) that I have layered to be played back over the top of an already existing mp3.
I very clumsily did not set the beat to the right tempo to start with (Current  BPM 120, but the song realy is 150) as I never intended to work on the track with the need for a click track (ie to add drums). As every instrument I played live and didnt need midi functions.
But now I want to add a midi drum track and basically get everything synced up to a click.
Ive done quiet a bit of work on this and have a lot of manual settings for EQ, reverb, compression etc etc that I really dont want to have to write down on a piece of paper and replicate into a whole new garageband song.
I know I can copy/paste the actual wave form into a new song, but how do I copy the TRACK SETTING into a completely new song?
Either that or how can I adjust the tempo of the original garageband track without it trying to stretch out my various recordings to fit this new tempo? (as it always does when you move the tempo slider up and down).
    Maybe neither are possible?

skim the Rescuing Corrupted GarageBand Files tute, it shows how:

(Let the page FULLY load. The link to your answer is at the top of your screen)
    Hey
Thats a super cool bit of info, and mega handy to know. I tried it out but unfortunately when I create a new file with the CORRECT BPM of 150 (Not 120 that I had set it to before) it still speeds all of the tracks up by 25% (120bpm x 25%=150bpm) when you paste them in.
Also a few things to note on that tutorial. If you have used an electric guitar track, you need to save the instrument in electric guitar and then select that track to be an electric guitar track, other wise you cant get the setting back later.
Also, for some reason, even though I did it all step by step (my 9 tracks in order were 1 x mp3, 2 x electric guitars, 4 x real vocal tracks) it added MORE tracks and didnt paste the copied over waves onto the right tracks in the right order (The mp3 was sitting on the electric guitar track). I'm sure it wouldnt take long to jiggle them around correctly, but as the song is 25% too fast anyway, I didnt think it was worth messing around with it anymore.
    So, anymore suggestions?

  • I just got iTunes 11.0. I'm used to being able to return to the beginning of a song by hitting 'enter'. What's the new command for skipping to the head of a song?

I just got iTunes 11.0. From all the previous versions I'm used to being able to return to the beginning of a song by hitting 'enter'. What's the new command for skipping to the head of a song?

Mmmmmm. Works OK for me. I've tried every variation I can think of. Play from playlist, play from library, shuffle on, shuffle off, single song repeat on/off, playlist repeat on/off.
WAIT !!   Now I've found it  !!  It happens when I have the sidebar hidden and play a playlist from the PLAYLIST pane. Hitting Enter then takes me to the FIRST song in the playlist.
WAIT AGAIN !!! In the time it took to write the above, it changed again and works properly. Well properly is not really true. It works if I stay in the PLAYLIST pane. If I switch to the SONGS, ALBUMS or ARTISTS pane, enter does nothing. BUT, if I switch to the GENRES pane, enter starts the first song there. AND, if I've switched away from the PLAYLIST pane and switch back, enter then starts the first song in the playlist.
WOW !! That was a crazy ride. I think we can safely say that there is something awry.

  • Classic skipping songs

I have the same problem *** others seem to be suffering.  My old Classic starting picking on certain artists and refusing to play them, just skipped through the songs.  It was gradually adding new artists to its banned list, grew from 1 to 7 in about 12 months, which was worrying.  I re-installed iTunes, reset the ipod etc no luck.  I have copied the songs to a friend's iPod and they play fine, as do they on my iPhone - the problem was the Classic iPod.
I sent it off under warrenty and they said it was uneconomical to repair and gave me a full refund.  I have just bought a new 160gb Classic (need this size for all my music) and exactly the same thing is happening with the same artists!  This seems to me to be a Classic issue?
    Can anyone help me please?

Hi -Bilbo from Cheshire has solved my skipping issue and it may work for you too?   The problem seems to be corrupted MPEG headers (whatever they are!), and the Firmware with the latest iTunes is less tolerant of errors in the headers.  Apparently.  Anyway, I downloaded MP3Validator (just googled it and there was a helpful tutorial from another tech guy) it is free.  You find any tracks or whole albums that are skipping and ask it to check them - it does, then solves the problems.  Delete the tracks from your iPod and then re-install them using "find folder" option, re-sync the ipod and they work.
or at least they do for me!  Hope this helps.

  • Ipod skips song while walking

Brand new Ipod Nano. Love it but when I walk I carry the Ipod in my pant pocket and it keeps on skipping songs, very frustrating. What can I do to stop that from happening?

Thanks for the answer. I had done that and it still skips. Should I reset the whole thing? Would that help?

  • Is there a way to search for skipped songs in my iTunes library?

I'd like to know whether there's a quicker way to find songs that are being skipped in my iTunes library, than simply manually checking each one.  I've been rearranging and deleting music files in Windows Explorer recently, so I know that there is a chance that I have demolished the link iTunes had to some of the files, but there's no way I can remember what all the modified albums are.  I know how to reestablish the links when I do find a song that is being skipped, but I'd love to go through the whole library and be able to find them all at once.
The last time I did this, manually - and it seemed to take hours - I did find quite a lot of songs that were being skipped, and was able to reestablish the links or in some cases just delete the song from iTunes since i hadn't wanted it anyway.  But even then it was a little hard, since after manually checking in the quickest way I could - going through the song list and briefly playing each one for a second or fraction of a second - there was no way of sorting the songs by whether they were skipped or not.  I just had to be very careful as I scrolled, to catch each one that had the symbol indicating non-playability.
All that to say - is there some better, automatic way of searching for non-playable, skipped songs, and is there some way of sorting them out from the rest so one can address them, and not miss any?

Same question. Used to have an iPod. Lost it (best digital player ever), now I use other portable device. The mp3 files have their id3tag edited in the original file, but the .m4a don't!.
Want to know someway to write the info from the library to the original .m4a files.

  • HELP...iPod nano (first generation) skipping songs, then....frozen

I need some advice. I have a 1st generation nano, (I also use it with the Nike + if that matters), it was skipping songs, and just playing whatever it wanted, so I just restored it, and now it is froze on the screen "language". I have also tried to reset it by holding down the centre and menu button. Diagnostics tells me "iPod connection status" is the problem, now it is not coming up or being recognized by my itunes. I am running all of the current software. Is it time for a new iPod?

  • If your ipod freezes, skips songs, and wont load, read this

ok, i have a 4th gen 40gb ipod which worked fine until i upgraded to itunes 5. now my ipod shows a folder with !, songs skip, and it freezes after 5 songs.disk mode didnt help either, as it didnt show up on my computer even though the ipod displayed do not disconnect. I found a fix for it. it sounds dangerous and crude, but it worked for me, and some other people. plug your ipod into your computer and it will say dont disconnect, and your comp probably will be locked up like normal until ipod loads, then take your ipod, and hit it on its side on a hard surface. do it while you hear the Hard drive spinning. NO JOKE. my ipod started working right after. however, the sound is really crappy now, but i was at least able to backup my files, and i'm going to use my warrenty to get a new one. the reason this works is beacuse somehoew the hd pin is out of place, and you can hear it clicking. hitting it will get it back in place. i know this sounds crazy, but trust me, it will stop skipping songs and freezing, and will appear on your computer. I warn you however, if you break your ipod doing this, dont blame me, i'm just saying this because it worked for me. give it a try if nothing else works. hope this helps. itunes 5 was really bad. anyone know where to get itunes 4.9, that was fine for me, and i had a separate podcasting program anyway.
    --Peace

    Hi Mark,
I tried entering the serial number onto the apple website, but it says my iPod had not been registered (although I have registered it!).
Anyway, I phoned apple support and they told me to go to depot.info.apple.com/ipod and fill in a service request. Unfortunately it said that my iPod is out of warranty, so I had to phone again to get them to update their records about the and they are sending out a service box in the next few days
I think I'm definately going to take out the applecare service now!

  • IPod was skipping songs. So I did a "restore".  Now it won't sync

OK, my iPod was skipping songs. I'd play an album, it would try and play some songs, skip them one at a time. it was probably failing about 30% of the time.
So, I thought I'd try to "Restore" the iPod, and then sync it.
Restore worked great. It wiped out the iPod of all my music. Then when I tried to perform the sync, it gets about 250 songs into it, and then fails. iTunes says that it is still syncing, but it never gets past that point. Continually syncing forever.
I don't know what I can do here (aside of buying a new iPod -- that suggestion is not helpful, btw). Before I had an iPod that played about 2/3 of its songs. Now 95% of my songs are just gone.
Everyone says not to run Disk Utility on the thing, but I'm extremely tempted. But I'm at a total loss here. Any ideas?

Bump for the answer because I also have same case.

  • Classic 20gb Ipod - Skipping songs

Recently, my 20 GB iPod classic has started skipping songs randomly. For example, when I try to play a playlist or album, it will skip through the songs one by one until the playlist/album is completed, without actually playing any of the songs. Has anyone had a similar problem and had success in fixing this? Or is my iPod shot and it is time to get a new one? Thanks in advance.

The songs on the ipod are damaged. Tyr restoring it with the latest ipod updater, more on restoring can be found here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
