A1000 as a JBOD

Can an A1000 be used as a JBOD and, if so, how do you go about it?

A1000 is a hardware RAID. You must use Raid Manager to configure/access the disks "behind" the RAID controller module. If you go to:
http://sunsolve.Sun.COM/handbook_pub/Systems/A1000/docs.html
the 805-4749 PDF shows you how to convert a D1000 (JBOD) into an A1000.
It involves swapping out the whole controller assembly, or, most of the "guts".
I imagine this process could be followed in reverse, assuming you aleady have the D1000 "guts".
But, if you already have a D1000, then you already have a JBOD.
You would have to purchase/find a 375-0008 Differential SCSI controller (the guts for a D1000) to accomplish this.

  • A1000 on solaris 10 as a JBOD

I want to upgrade a system from sol9 to sol10, but raid manager is not supported on solaris10
Is there any way I can use an A1000 as a JBOD on solaris 10

So, A1000 cannot be used with solaris 10, I'll stick with solaris 9 then as I have no hardware budget. (unless of course there is a way of changing the controller on the a1000 :-) )

  • How to create a JBOD without formatting one of the hard drives

    Hi,
I'm using a QWC Mercury Elite Pro external hard drive with 2 500Gb hard disks as my video scratch disk. I have configured them as 2 separate disks and been using CCC to copy the 1st drives content to 2nd drive. Now, the 1st drive is almost full. I'm planning to JBOD these 2 drives into a single drive but I don't want to format the drive with 500GB of video in it. Is it possible to do that?
Basically, I would like to add another 500GB hard disk to my current 500 Gb disk (which is full) and see them as a single drive without formatting the current drive.
    Thanks.
    Ucan

to JBOD these 2 drives into a single drive
    You just said a nonsequitor.
    to JBOD two drives
is to make them into two separate distinct drives with no RAID configuration applied to them.
Do you want them to act as a single cohesive drive unit, or one where files get copied automatically between the two of them in some RAID configuration? I know JBOD configurations quite well, but RAID I'm not too familiar with.

  • Apple Raid Card panic on Mac Pro Early 2008 after installing SSD as an enhanced JBOD.

I recently installed a SSD drive in my Mac Pro to replace an aging, original boot drive.  I have an Apple raid card with 3 other hds attached - all in an enhanced JBOD configuration.  After installing the SSD from OWC (3G Electra SATA II Compatible) everything appeared to work fine.  But after 36 hours I received a apple raid card kernel panic alert.  See below for diagnostic crash log.  OWC support says that their drive should work fine - now I am not so sure.  Anyone out there with suggestions/solutions is most welcomed.

RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • SunFire X2200 and SAS JBOD J4200 - removal of hard disk issue

    Hello,
We just purchased one X200 M2 server and a J4200 JBOD storage attached to SAS HBA of the server. The J4200 array works and we can access all the disks properly, create ZFS pools - all works.
We have a problem when we try to identify the correct position of a failed disk (for example) on the J4200 drive slot.
For example disks c5t5d0 and c5t6d0 are actually in slots 1 and 9 in the array.
We tried using cfgadm command but we are getting errors:
    # cfgadm -x locator c5::dsk/c5t5d0
    cfgadm: Hardware specific failure: unavailable
    # cfgadm -c unconfigure c5::dsk/c5t5d0
cfgadm: Hardware specific failure: failed to unconfigure SCSI device: I/O error
What is the correct way to identify the drive position of a disk device when using SAS JBOD array like J4200?

    Hello Paul,
the drive should work in your system, except the drive is damaged/malfunctioning.
Have you tried a single drive or several of these ?
I would suggest that you check if the drive is properly seated in the backplane. Is the mounting backet properly attached ? I had a drive that was properly detected, but worked un-reliable. After re-attaching the mounting bracket to the drive, the errors vanished.
Applying Sun firmware to a non-Sun device doesn't work, because the update utility checks the manufacturer of the installed firmware.
I'm using these inexpensive drives in my private systems (F280R, Blade 1000/2000). Some of the drives have been taken by the previous owner/seller out of service due to "preventive" maintainance. One has even grown defects.

  • AEBS cannot see both disks in 2 disk enclosure set to JBOD

I have a MacPro 3.1 and AEBS, the computer runs 10.6.8 and Win 7. All most recent updates installed on both OSes and the AEBS.  I have a generic (bought at Fry's) HORNETTER, 2 disk external USB enclosure containing two (2) 500GB hard drives, both formatted to FAT32 for easy sharing purposes with win, which is connected to the AEBS via its USB port. The enclosure is set to JBOD (Just a Bunch of Disks), so I can see each one individually.  The enclosure is externally powered.  I have had problems in the past with this set-up off and on.  Now it is VERY tempermental, sometimes it works, most times not and now over the last couple months it has stopped working for all intents and purposes.
The problem I get is that the AEBS does not see both drives, only one. This happens in OS x and Win 7.
I get an error saying there is a problem with the disk, connect it to the computer directly and run Disk Utility to check for errors.  So I do this every time and it returns no errors. Both disks can be mounted no problem if connected directly to the computer.  But if I unplug it from the computer and plug it back into into the AEBS it stops working again.
I have this same problem with my HTPC Mac Mini 2.1 (C2D 2/0Ghz).  I tried connection it with the same config and got the same problem, only one disk shows of the two in the enclosure.
Is there anything I could do to resolve this? I have searched high and low for a direct answer, but only see confusing responses and nothing direct on point.  I apologize if this is a common issue.
I am not trying to do any Tim Machine backups, just using it one drive to store my media (music, video) and the other drive as a extra storage/share volume/hand backup of important files.  I like having it available off the AEBS so I can access the music and video from my HTPC Mac Mini and my DVR Windows machine, as well as using them both as a easy swap for mac files I drop there for when I'm booted into Windows.
    Any help would be appreciated.

UPDATE: I read some tips on other related issues, and so I tried connecting a POWERED USB HUB (a Targus brand 4 port AC powered USB hub I had lying around) to the AEBS and then the external enclosure to the hub.
No success, and two different problems.
In OS X I can now SEE both disks (where before  only saw one disk), but the problem now is even though I can see both disks I can only access one (the one I could NOT access before).  The disk I could access before is not visible but when I try to double click on it to mount it, i get a spinning blue circle and eventually the request times out with an error  which makes no sense, but says:
"There was an error connecting to the server “Lou's AirPort Extreme”. Check the server name or IP address, and then try again.
If you are unable to resolve the problem contact your system administrator."
When dismissed this is followed byt eh additional error message:
"The operation can’t be completed because the original item for “BACKUP” can’t be found."
On Win 7, I now cannot see the AEBS at all, and neither disk is visible.
    *sigh*
    Back to square one......
SECOND UPDATE: Connected a USB thumb drive to the Powered HUB and it shows up fine.  So now I am just totally confused.

Has anyone else seen Windows Server 2012 Storage Spaces with a Simple RAID 0 (also happens with Mirrored RAID 1 and Parity RAID 5) virtual disk exhibiting extremely slow read speed of 5Mb/sec, yet write performance is normal at 650Mb/sec in RAID 0?

Hitachi drives are directly connected to LSI 9207-8e using a 2-meter SAS SFF-8088 to eSATA cable to six-inch eSATA/SATA adapter.
The Enterprise drives are on LSI's compatibility list.  The Desktop drives are not, but regardless, both drive models are affected by the problem.
Interestingly, this entire configuration but with two SIIG eSATA 2-Port adapters instead of the LSI 9207-8e, works perfectly with both reads and writes at 670Mb/sec.
I thought SAS was going to be a sure bet for expanding beyond the capacity of port limited eSATA adapters, but after a week of frustration and spending over $5,000.00 on drives, controllers and cabling, it's time to ask for help!
    Any similar experiences or solutions?

    Windows Server 2012 Standard
    Intel i7 CPU and Motherboard
LSI 9207-8e 6Gb SAS JBOD Controller with latest firmware/BIOS and Windows driver.
    (4) Hitachi 4TB 6Gb SATA Enterprise Hard Disk Drives HUS724040ALE640
    (4) Hitachi 4TB 6Gb SATA Desktop Hard Disk Drives HDS724040ALE640
    1) Yes, being slow either on reads or on writes is a quite common situation for storage spaces. See references (with some of the solutions I hope):

    2) Issues with SATA-to-SAS hardware is also very common. See:

  • Re: Qosmio G20 blocked on JBOD in the BIOS

    Hi,
I have a problem with the Toshiba Qosmio G20-109 .
The system does not start, the two hard drives in JBOD (unable to start Windows).
    HDD1 - 120GB
    HDD2 - 250GB
So I wanted to put the first HDD 1 1RAID-0 using the method described in the manual : I entered the code 1 2 3 4 and I pressed Enter.
The problem is that once entered the BIOS code remained frozen and blocked.
I tried everything , I 'm not despairing by reaching install an OS.
I hope there is a solution.

    It's simple.
    1RAID-0: HDD 1
    JBOD: HDD 2
DVD Drive does not boot a modified Windows. I had an official version that starts but does not have the driver.
I created a CD with the driver using nLite but he did not recognize.
I found on the internet a CD Win XP SP3 Toshiba OEM.
Miraculously, he possessed the RAID drivers and recognized the hard drives that allowed me to install Windows.
I installed Windows on the HDD 1 and I just formatted the HDD 2.
Thereafter, I installed Windows 7 with the driver.
    Toshiba RAID: 1.11.17
    Toshiba RAID Virtual Device: 1.1.0.0
I updated the firmware of the DVD drive : D100> D101> D102 it allowed me to start the CD created with nLite.
All drivers are up to date for Windows 7.
Only the buttons to the TV does not work (touch keys) !!

  • Solaris 10 on 280R with A1000

We have loaded solaris 10 ( 3/05) on our server i.e. Sunfire 280R with A1000 storage connected to it thru SCSI cable. We have addon SCSI card installed in server. Our A1000 is having only one controller.
    Afterthat we have loaded sun storage RAID Manager 6.22 software to configure A1000 , we have made slices using RAID 5 & using RM6 utility. While rebooting the server we are getting following two errors & keeps scrolling on screen for about 10 minutes , though we are able to access A1000;
    1. Warning : mod_load : cannot load module 'rdriver'
    2. /kernel/drv/spark9/rdriver:undefined symbol 'dev_get_dev_info'
Is any solution to above errors? Is any patch / upgrade / firmware etc for above errors ?
Will it recommended to upgrade to solaris 10 or continue with solaris 9. we are using this as a database server with oracle 10G.

FYI, I think Sun discontinued support for the A1000 h/w in Solaris 10... should be documented.
I only mention this in case you want to have Sun support help you... if it works fine, I generally wouldn't worry. But it is a production system, I might have second thoughts about using Solaris 10 with unsupported h/w.
    My $.02, YMMV.

  • JBODs.

I have a nasty (and growing) mess of external drives full of video files sitting under my desk. After visiting MacWorld Expo, I've been thinking about getting a 4 bay JBOD (just a bunch of drives) that uses internal IDE or eSATA drives. They daisy chain like external drives so you can tie in as few or as many as you need. When a drive fills up, you only need to buy a new internal drive, which are cheaper than separate external drives. If anyone else has done this, I'd be interested in what you've used and learned.

For what it's worth, I think most of the JBOD/RAID cases out there are way overpriced, especially if you're looking for a single case to hold 4 drives or more.
I recently built a couple of external units using the OWC Mercury EliteAL cases and a pair of 500 GB WD Caviar SE16 SATA drives in each. The price was right - $308 for 1TB - performance is awesome and they are absolutely silent.
Although I have to admit I really wanted to get the Raidon 4-bay Rackmount case but couldn't justify $499 for the case alone.

  • Controller failure / e-jbod

What happens to the drives in enhanced JBOD mode if the controller they're attached to fails and must be replaced?
Assuming that no damage is done to drives, what does one do to get the drives recognized again after the new controller is put into place?
    thanks for any information here.

In addition to the other answers:
The firmware on the 'new' controller is often lower then on the broken one. You need to upgrade this. Also all info from the broken controller has to be filled in , including IP. This works best with a direct ethernet cable.
If you have bigger disks then the controller firmware supports, you are confronted with an xraid with all the disks red leds on. (as I saw last saturday;-)
After a firmware upgrade you better do a full power off, including batteries off, otherwise the ethernet connection to the xraid can be lost.
Also, if a FC switch is involved, you have to adjust the zoning.

    Donald

  • 3310 JBOD Installation on V880

Hi Everyone, hoping someone can shed some light on my situation here. I'm trying to setup a SA3310 Array as a JBOD on a SunFire V880.
    - i have installed the Ultra3 SCSI LVD card and installed the patch that came on the CD-ROM with the card.
    - i have connected the array to the host in a Single Bus configureation. The SCSI patch cable between the to SB ports and then I have Channel A connected to the Ultra 3 SCSI card on the server.
We have had many issues with this - i installed the 112697 patch for the SCSI drivers, shutdown the server and booted the array and the server. Performed a STOP-A and ran PROBE-SCSI-ALL - the result was that I could see the 5 drives inside the Array as well as Target F- the Processor. So ran a boot -r command and restarted the server. Just prior to the system loaded the /dev and /devices I receive the following errors:
WARNING: /pci@8,700000/pci@2/scsi4 (qus0): Target sync. Rate reduced. Target 3 lun 0
    WARNING:     /pci@8,700000/pci@2/scsi4 (qus0): Parity Error
WARNING:     /pci@8,700000/pci@2/scsi4 (qus0): corrupt label wrong magic #
At this point my server locks up and boots no further and the only way to get the server to boot is to power off the array and reboot the server without the array turned on. We have been trying to correct this for a couple of months now and we would like to get this working and useable. If anyone has any idea as to what we can do next they would be greated appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Nick

The output I receive from the PROBE-SCSI-ALL looks like this for the 3310.
    /pci@8/700000/pci@2/scsi@4
    Target 0
    Unit 0     DISK     SEAGATE     72G
    Target 1
    Unit 1     DISK     SEAGATE     72G
    Target 2
    Unit 2     DISK     SEAGATE     72G
    Target 3
    Unit 3     DISK     SEAGATE     72G
    Target 4
    Unit 4     DISK     SEAGATE     72G
    Target F
    Unit 0     PROCESSOR     SUN     StorEdge 3310 DA000
    Thanks,

  • Mixing JBOD and Raid 5

Has anyone set up Raid 5 & JBOD volumes on XServe RAID? We have a Raid 5 volume on one controller and would like to set up JBOD on the second controller so that we can fill these disks with backups to the Raid 5 data and take them offsite for disaster recovery. So I have several questions:
    1. Can you have Raid 5 & JBOD on the same XServe RAID?
    2. If they can be on separate controllers can then also be on the same controller?
    3. Is there any problem or special procedure for ejecting these JBOD drives so we can take them offsite?
    4. If we have 3 drives to use as JBOD for backup, should we have each one formatted as its own JBOD unit and put them in one at a time for effective offsite backup? Could we put them all in at once and fill them each at a time and remove as they fill? Should they be one volume or three?
Thanks for any thoughts on this. The plan is to use these drives for backup now and down the line convert them to additional Raid space.

    Hi David,
    1) Yes.
    2) Yes.
    3) I don't believe so -- but I haven't tested it yet. I'd imagine "ejecting" them from the host and them removing them would be fine -- of course be careful not to remove the wrong disk
    4) If you have 3 drives in JBOD, it has to be 3 volumes. Unless you're suggesting mirroring on the RAID (which would not be JBOD, it would be RAID 1), or mirroring on the host (which is a software RAID 1 mirror). JBOD is "just a bunch of disks" -- there is no RAID involved at all.
