  • Ibook G4 late 2004 model charging intermittently-flashes amber then green

Hi there, i have an ibook G4 14 inch late 2004 with mac os x 10.4.11. my previous 45w power cord needed to be jiggled in order to power the laptop (it was pretty damaged). yesterday, it stopped working completely, so i went to the apple store and bought a new 65w power cord. of course, it worked perfectly in the store. when i went home, it seemed to work perfectly until the battery reached about 37%, then it started doing this weird thing. while plugged in, the light on the power cord started flashing, changing from green to amber. it will be green for about 8 seconds, then amber for about 6 seconds.
it does this whether the computer is being used or shut down. while i was using the computer, the battery drained pretty quickly, so i shut it down and left it plugged in overnight. overnight, it seemed to have charged a little bit. the battery says it is 55% charged and, when i open my energy saver on system preferences, it will appear as if it is charging while the power cord light flashes amber, then stops charging when the power cord light flashes green. as i said, it will be amber for about 6 seconds, then green for about 8 seconds.
i tried resetting the PMU, but it did not work (perhaps i did it incorrectly?). i then tried to reset the pmu and the pram via these instructions:
    turned computer off.
Make sure the Caps Lock key is not down.
Restart the computer. Immediately after hearing the startup sound, simultaneously press and hold Command-Option-P-R. (If you do not hold down the key combination within 5 to 10 seconds after the computer restarts, you must repeat steps 1-3.)
Hold down the keys until you hear the startup sound again. Then release the keys.
If the computer shuts itself off, press the reset button on the back of the computer to turn it back on.
that didn't work. then i tried to just reset the PMU again (via the support instructions) by turning the computer off, then simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Did not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
Waited 5 seconds, then pressed the power button.
    that didn't help either.
i have been trying to figure this out but have not been able to thus far. of course, aside from being able to read, i have no computer savvy whatsoever. ANY help would be so appreciated. sorry i typed so much, but since i do not know much about computers, i was unsure what information was most pertinent.
thanks again, SOOOO much, for any help. i would be glad to answer any medical questions as a thank you.

There may be other issues in the computer's hardware, such as the
battery; as it should have about 4,000 (mAh) in full capacity when it
is charged and the one you have appears to be at best, 50% of that.
Also, there is a chance the DC-in Board may be defective or have a
poor internal connection where the AC Adapter plugs into the iBook.
    There are some pages at iFixit.com about how to remedy this defect;
and parts are available to repair this, still. (But suspect the battery, 1st.)
I'm looking at the charging information on your log report and wonder if
the battery is the reason why there is a Zero, in that section; or if there
is some DC-in Board reason. Without a known-good battery, it's hard to
tell what else may be going on. Unless you take it to a Genius bar...(?)

Troubleshooting power related issues in a portable computer can be a
bit tedious as the computers age, and potential sources of the problem
may be at play in there, at the same time.
There also is a matter of calibrating a battery on a routine basis, to be sure
it works correctly and the microchip controller for charging it is working OK.
    • Apple Portables: Calibrating your computer's battery for best performance:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490?viewlocale=en_US
The battery is the most likely culprit in the matter of the charge light indicator
changing color from Amber to Green and back again, like that. This is a matter
of troubleshooting, so if you know someone with a healthy iBook G4 battery
(as noted in Profiler's battery or energy information, hi-power/low-use cycles)
you may be able to check the activity without additional purchases.
Be sure to get a replacement battery from a reputable company, as some of
the third-party cheap imports have less battery capacity when new than an
old partially used Apple battery would have. (And flaky warranty, too.)
The battery is the most likely item, at this point. A replacement is suggested.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Why won't my rMBP late-2013 model charge?

This just started happening in the last 24 hours and it's almost like my MacBook refuses to be charged by my cable or my father's cable. Is anyone else experiencing this?
LED light on charger does not turn amber or green. However, when I plug the cable in, my screen brightness increases but my battery level says "Battery is not charging."

If it doesn't work, there's a problem with your battery or the MagSafe port. As your MacBook is in warranty, make a backup of your files with Time Machine and take the MacBook Pro to an Apple Store or reseller to get it replaced or repaired free of charge

  • How much of a difference is there, if any, between an MBP A1260 and MBP A1286??

I want to get a cover for my refurbished Macbook Pro and though my model # isn't "listed" in my System Preferences what I do get is MacBook Pro4,1 Early 2008.  I asked through here if someone could tell me what model that was and I was told A1260.  When I have searched for covers for my MBP A1260, I keep getting A1286.  Is there a big difference or is that in the same series so that if I ordered the cover it would fit or it will be too big or too small?? Thanks for any help with this.........much appreciated.

Here is a view of the A1260 specs which are for an MBP early-2008 model 15".
And the A1286 specs which are for an MBP late-2008 and above model 15".
They are both 15" models so size-wise you shouldn't have a problem getting the cover you want for an A1286 model.

  • USB charging adaptor compatibility.

    Hello,
I bought blackberry z3 from amazon about a month ago. The charging adaptor which came with the bundle is with model no. RM0200 and RIM Part no. HDW-53513-001.
In the booklet with the bundle this adaptor is not listed as the approved charger for BlackBerry z3. Kindly help me if anybody has got the same issue or if somebody knows that this model charger is compatible with the device.
    Thanking you in anticipation.

I asked this exact question to an Apple Genius this morning and they said that they thought the USB device draws too much power, and therefore is disabled for non-MacBook Air computers. He did not sound like he knew for sure, but sounded like a guess. I cannot see how a device like this would draw more current than the standard USB port supplies. I'm a bit skeptical that the Superdrive would require some insane amount of power either. It is probably less of a power issue specifically, but perhaps a stepped up voltage level on the buss so they do now have to put a step down transformer into the accessory - thereby minimizing the form factor of the enclosure? I'm all for the design of the MBA and its core functionality that eliminates features, but to make accessories that require a "certain type" of USB connection seems like a bad decision to me. Perhaps firewire with its higher voltage / power levels would have been the more intelligent port to have in place of the headphone jack... there are lots of USB headphones and even USB to mini-jack adapters these days...

  • Macbook won't take charge from the charger it came with.  But WILL take a charge from older generation chargers.

My Macbook will only charge from an older model charger.  The charger that came with the laptop, after the computer overheated dramatically, is suddenly not working.  The weird thing is, the Apple store tried several chargers out just now, including a brand new one, and what we discovered is that the older model chargers work fine, but the newer model chargers (which used to work perfectly) are indeed recognized by the Macbook (there is a little plug/'charging' symbol in the top right) but there is also a message next to the symbol, in parenthesis, stating that the Macbook is "Not Charging".  Any idea what this could mean?  The Apple store said the computer passed all of their rigorous tests... but obviously something is wrong... so they gave me two options: they could either replace the Magsafe unit ($50), or they could send the computer to the "Depot" to have any parts that are malfunctioning changed at one flat fee ($280).  What do I do?  Because I don't want to pay $280 for a new Magsafe unit when I can get it for $50.  But if this is a logic board problem, then obviously I should send it in to the Depot-- but what if they run more tests and decide the logic board is fine?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

    my ginger,
I did the shift-control-option + power SMU reset.  (My Macbook has an internal battery so I couldn't remove it.)  Nothing changed as a result of that though.
I checked to see if the battery and adapter are being recognized.  This is what it said (cut-and-pasted below).  Let me know what you think.
I wonder if the wattage difference in the adapters is what is making the difference... And if so, what that might mean in terms of damage done.  Hmmm.
Thanks again for your help.  Much appreciated.

  • Charging 3G nano with an adpater

My Sonnet usb power adapter for ipod does not seem to be working with the 3 G nano. The green light is on (so I know the adapter is working), but it is not recognizing that the nano needs charging. Suggestions?

I assume the adapter worked before on an older model of iPod?
If so, I think Apple changed the way Nanos and Classic models charge vs. the older models in that now these new ones require the two data lines to be in some known state where as older models only needed the power and ground pins and not the data lines. Many adapters to charge iPod only supply those two pins and the two middle pins of the connector (Data+ and Data-) are left unconnected.

  • Nokia Maps Navigation Charges

Nokia/Ovi Maps is now completely free for some the latest models. Click this link for the list of phones with free navigation.
For the older and unsupported models, charges are as follows:
Firstly there is no charge to use nokia maps to locate you position and to download any maps you want. So all map updates are absolutely free.
You will however have to pay for navigation if you wish to get turn by turn instructions. There are various rates for navigation. You can buy a single country or regions (eg. western Europe) for different durations such as a week, a month, a year etc.
Since March 2010 navigation licenses are now only available for regions only and regional license charges have been substantially reduced to a very reasonable €9.99 for a 1 year license, and for those short breaks and holiday abroad, you could get the 1 month license for the region you are visiting for €1.99. These are approximate prices and do vary a little between the various regions.
    Also see
    http://europe.nokia.com/support/search?comp=Maps%2C+Nokia+Here+and+Now&cat=support&page=1&qt=costs&c...
There could also be associated network charges if you choose to go online and use AGPS when navigating. Network charges can be avoided by pre-loading your required map data to your phone using Nokia Map Loader or Ovi Suite and disabling Assisted GPS and network based.

Licences are now 30 and 90 days plus a full year, I believe this is effective from Maps 2.0 onwards.

  • Problems charging w/ automobile chargers

My battery charges fine w/ computer or wall charger but won't charge with car charger. It overheats w/ car charger and charge goes way down real fast.
I've tried 2 different chargers already, one-Griffin from ATT store and XtremeMac from Apple store. Happens with both the same.

    Hello RonAnnArbor,
I was wondering what model charger you have? I just received an XxtremeMac inCharge auto charger that appears to work with my iPod, but not with my iPhone. When I charge the iPod with it, it charges normally, but when I hook up my iPhone, nothing happens. The green (or red if empty) battery indicator does not appear. This is the weirdest thing. I think I am going to send it back for an exchange. Thanks in advance to all who might be able to help!

  • Cannot load computer, Cannot perform a clean install

    Hello everyone,
Firstly i am primarily a PC user, so bear with my Mac ineptitude. The computer is a MacBook Pro 15" A1286 model - Early 2012 (i think).
I haven't used my MacBook for a couple of months and when i recently went to power it on (full battery charge) i am stuck with a loading/updating screen.
The bar goes about half way and then the computer simply shuts down - so i cannot even load the OS.
Im not sure whats going on, so now i basically want to perform a clean installation / format drive.
So i follow some instructions online and one article says to hold down 'Command + R' when turning the computer on - which brings up the disk utilty fine.
I then proceed to try and erase the drive, format the drive, partition the drive, reinstall os x - nothing works
I am hit with an error message - "Couldn't unmount disk".
After reading several guides, it seems i might be able to boot off another device in order to be able to perform a clean install by loading a file onto a DVD/Flash Stick - but i cannot download anything off my AppStore account as my Mac is not working.
If anyone could point me towards a workable solution, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thankyou

Thanks for the fast reply, however it seems that the first aid utility has detected nothing abnormal with the drive.
Could it really be that the HDD is unusable?
I would still be very interested in any other tips or suggestions.
    Thankyou

  • Screen Issues with MacBook Pro (Static Lines)

Hey guys.  I aam having problems with my Screen/Display on my Macbook Pro.
Static lines appear aprox 1/3 of the way in from the right side.  The lines run horizontally about 1 inch in length and running vertically all the way down the display. A screen shot shows a normal working display.  Took a pic of the problem:
I cannot run hardware tools.  My computer did not come with a disc and I know they are only a shipping charge but I do not have even $5.  I am a student and this is my only way to do my schoolwork.  The Screen (inner display and outer protective screen) was replaced by Apple in May '12.  The 1 yr warranty ran out in June '12.  When the screen was replaced it started doing this as well, but had not gotten this bad.  There are now 2 where there was only one yesterday.  I am wondering if it may be the cable as moving the display often fixes or produces the problem.   I know the cable is not very expensive and not to difficult to replace.
Here is the info on my Mac:
    Nice Name:
    Machine Model: MacBookPro9,1
Name: MacBook Pro (mid 2012) 15 inch
    Family name: A1286
    Model Number: MD103
    Group1: MacBook
    Group2: Pro
    Generation:
    CPU speed: 2.3GHz
    Screen size: 15.4 inch
    Screen resolution: 1440x900 pixels
    Colour: Aluminium
    Production year: 2012
    Production week: 13  (April)
    Model introduced: 2012
    Memory - flavour: DDR3-S-1600
Memory - number of slots: 2
    Memory - maximum total: 16GB
    Memory - largest module: 8GB
Factory: C0 (Quanta Computer (Susidiary = Tech Com))

It is getting worse in the sense that it is occuring more often and taking longer to resolve.  Moving the laptop lid/display would typically fix the prblem in the past but now it is hit or miss.  Even vibrations will cause the issue to occur or resolve.  We are leaning more towards the issue being a cable and not the display.  Since taking a screenshot produces a pic without issues I would gather that the video card is fuctioning properly.  I welcome any comments on this.

  • MacBook pro won't boot from disc, MacBook pro won't boot from disc, MacBook pro won't boot from disc

I bought a MacBook pro unibody a1286 model faulty off eBay and am attempting to resserect it. it came without a battery, HDD or charger. I have bought all 3 however no harddrive is installed yet as it hasn't arrived.
The logic board required replacing so I have done this, I noticed a pin sized hole in the keyboard ribbon cable when doing the replacement.
My question is, do I need the harddrive in for the laptop to function relatively normally? I've tried putting the OSX Lion disc in to see if I can get any activity but it won't load, just makes disc drive noises. The laptop gets very hot as the fans don't appear to activate although they do work.
The keyboard backlight also doesn't light up whether this is due to the hole I don't know. It does power on an chime and I can get to a screen with a cursor if I hold ALT, any further information would be greatly appreciated.

This is where you would install OS X, so yes, you need a hard drive.

  • Pavilion dm4 1150ea Blutooth not working

    Hi
I have Pavilion Laptop dm4 1150ea.  Blutooth on this is not working and frankly since buying the laptop I did not try connecting devices through bluetooth. Recently I tried this but not succeeded.
When I add a device in blutooth window, it shows available devices, but when I try to pair - it says installed software but the device does not connect to the laptop.
I suspected the driver may be corrupt or old.  So downloaded the latest driver SP51607.exe  When installing, the files are copied but when it installs it, I get the error message that blutooth device hardware must be turned on.  The device is turned on in software settings.
The Device Manager shows some blutooth drivers but with a ? mark. Properties say that software driver is not installed.
How to check that my laptop actually has the blutooth card and that it is working.
I assume since the system shows blutooth, it must be there.
Shall be grateful for anyone who can provide guidance.

    Hi Manjunath
Can't download the drivers by clicking onto the link given by you.  I get errors such as cannot find 'ftp' ..
    Is there any alternative link?
    Also:
Recently I purchased blutooth speakers of JBL make model Charge.  This is detected by my laptop but when software is installed it installs this device as Blutooth Headset and then it is listed under Recording devices.  It should be listed as Bluetooth Speakers and should be seen under Playback devices.
The result is that I can not play music files from laptop on these speakers via blutooth.
I have tried to search for drivers for these speakers.  But the manufacturer says there are no special drivers and that laptop should detect it and configure it.
I can play the music by connected wires with 3.5  m jacks from laptop to Aux In on the speakers.
Are there any generic drivers for Bluttoth speakers that should be / can be downloaded and installed?
    Thanks for your interest.

  • Excite Pro early life questions

    Hello all
Ive picked up an excite rpo off amazon uk and am starting to feel my way around, I have a couple of early life questions please.
1 are there any third party one part chargers out there to use as a spare.
2 can anyone recommend a good all round media player please. Ive tried a couple of media files on it since arrival this morning and playback on some is a little stuttery using the Tosh's own media player and BSPLAYER. Can anyone recommend one capable of playing AVI with AC3 / MKV and x264 please.

Personally, I don't have any advice about media playback. I tend to stick with Netflix myself.
As for the charger, I don't know if there are any differences between the US and UK models' charging ports. This is the Toshiba USA forum, so you may want to check with Toshiba UK.
