A1288 iPod stuck in recovery mode; all troubleshooters fail

I have an A1288 iPod touch (2nd generation, largely unused I am told) stuck in recovery mode. It spontaneously entered recovery mode while I was attempting to remove all songs from it. To my knowledge (it is a borrowed device -- this is why recovery is of paramount importance), it has not been modified from factory settings.
Windows 7 Home/Premium does not acknowledge the device's existence; there is not even a message that the device cannot be recognised. The computer does produce a sound to acknowledge that something has been connected/disconnected to a USB port; however, the device does not become visible anywhere.
Other devices, including other iPods (without iOS), are recognisable. The problem persists regardless of the Windows 7 computer to which the device is connected. iTunes and Windows 7 are fully updated. The Apple Mobile Device driver is completely up to date.
I have completed the troubleshooters for failure to recognise ( http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538 ) and for iOS restoration ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808 ; I do not receive the recovery mode alert from iTunes) multiple times. (I have deactivated AVG and Firewall.)

Try DFU mode and then connect to computer and restore

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try restoring again
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Ipod stuck in recovery mode and restore fails every time

Hi, Just bought a refurb ipod touch (2nd gen 8gb). As soon as i plug it in and boot up itunes it says its discovered an ipod in recovery mode and that i need to restore it. Problem is the restore always fails. Not really sure what else to do? Ipod screen just displays the usb connect to itunes diagram all the time,
Do i have to send it back already or does anyone have a miracle cure?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the forum.
Try [Unable to update or restore|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808]. You may have to try this more than once. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, try [Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1495]. (If you are on a Mac, there's a Mac link on that page).
If you device does not appear in iTunes or cannot be restored in iTunes (and you're running Windows) try [iPod is not recognized by Windows due to driver installation issues|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538]
If you are running any antivirus, spyware, firewall, etc. that might be interfering with this process be sure to turn them off. Also plug your USB cord into a different port than you tried before.

    - Reboot the computer

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

  • TS1363 4th gen IPOD stuck in recovery mode?

4th Gen IPod stuck in recovery mode, how do I reset or restore?

Connect it to iTunes.  If iTunes doesn't see the iPod, try manually connecting the device to iTunes in recovery mode using the instructions in this Apple support document.

  • Jailbroken iPod stuck in recovery mode iTunes and PC won't recognize

    Hello,
First of all, I bought my iPod Touch 8GB 2G (modelnumber is A1288,so according to Apple it's 2G) second hand. Second, I'm really a noob! I don't know anything bout iPods, so please explain everything extensively. I bought the iPod for my little brother, and he decided to jailbreak it. Unfortunately, I didn't know that, so when I tried to erase all data from the iPod at once, it got stuck in recovery mode (with the usb cable and itunes logo). iTunes doesn't recognize the iPod, the PC (win7, 64-bit) doesn't recognize the iPod either (it reports: 'Windows doesn't recognize the USB device'). DFU mode doesn't do anything. The device is called 'Unknown Device' in Device Manager. I tried to manually update the driver of the iPod with C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Driver but it failed (Code 10. Device doesn't start). De failed attempt only resulted in the change of the name from 'Unknow Device' (with a yellow exclamenation mark) into 'Apple Mobile Device USB Driver'. But when I connect the iPod to another computer it's back to 'Unknown Device' again and gets Code 43 in Device Manager. What can I do?
    With kind regards,
    Rosa (from the Netherlands)
    Problems:
    Jailbreak (don't want it)
Stuck in recovery mode (usb cable and iTunes logo)
    iTunes doesn't recognize the iPod
    Windows doesn't recognize the device
    Unknown Device' at Device Manager
Can't update the driver via Device Manager (Code 10. Device doesn't start. And on another laptop Code 43)

    Sometimes jailbreaking bricks the device.

  • Mac formatted ipod stuck in recovery mode when rescuing tunes onto a PC

    Hi
I have an ipod Nano (6gb) that is Mac formatted. I tried to recover the tunes from it to a PC desktop with Xplay. It started ok and then the ipod entered into recovery mode so it could be reformatted for Windows (I think itunes started doing it).
At that moment I couldn’t recover my tunes. Now whenever I use Xplay again it says "not accessible. The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable.” So it’s stuck in recovery mode.
I know the tunes are still on the ipod because the amount of disk space taken up hasn’t changed, despite the ipod not actually showing the songs on the UI.
How can I fix this so I can grab all the tunes off the ipod before I restore the ipod in itunes and thus effectively formatting it?
    Cheers,

  • IPod stuck on recovery mode cannot restore error 3004

    Hello,
My iPod Touch 5th gen is stuck on recovery mode for two days now. I have lost all of my important files, but I am hoping to make it work again.
I was updating to ios 8 the other day and suddenly my iPod turned off and was stuck on recovery mode. No big deal, but then, as I was to restore it, iTunes only says that "The iPod 'iPod' could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3004)."
I'm here now because I have tried all of the fixes. I have tried to put it on DFU mode (didn't work), changed my DNS settings, updated my iTunes, uninstalling, reinstalling it, turned my PC on and off, used another PC, but nothing has worked. I used some external programs that can get my iDevice to get in and out of DFU mode, but it has not worked.
I am on PC, Windows 8.
    Hope anyone can help.

my ipod 1st gen is stuck in recovery mode, when I plug into iTunes it tells me to restore ipod. when this is done it comes up with error code 1. please help. I have tried disabling pc security.

    Greetings billewen690,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that after restoring your iPod, you are seeing error 1. In this situation there may be a couple of further steps I would recommend to go along with disabling the security on your Windows computer. If you have completed all of these steps and continue to receive the error, it may be necessary to follow the link and contact Apple support.

  • Ipod stuck in recovery mode and won't restore. says it can't connect to the network.

My son tried to jailbreak his ipod touch like an idiot and of course it did not work. Now his ipod is stuck in recovery mode and I can't get it to restore. I get a message that says:the ipod software update server could not be contacted. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later. I have internet access and everything is working but itunes can't connect to it. Why? I have been having issues with itunes for a couple weeks now. I can't connect to the store and redeem itunes cards either.

Make sure the setting for your security software allow iTunes to contact Apple servers:
iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues
As for the iPod, since he tried to modify the software, the only thing that could help would be DFU mode , we can't help much more, problems with jailbroken devices can't be discussed in theses forums, due to the Terms of Use.
Your son has to ask those people for help, which encouraged him to jailbreak his device.

my ipod was fine, working brilliantly, tll a few days ago, it had a white screen, that said "connect to computer and restore in itunes" in many different languages. so i did, but itunes didn't pick up my ipod. so forced it into disk mode, and itunes recgognised it, and the message "Itunes as detected an ipod in recovery mode, you must restore this Ipod before it can be used with itunes" came up. so having restored it, i reconnected it, and the whole thing repeated itself, now my ipod maybe stuck in recovery mode, as every time i restore and connect, the same message comes up... HELP!!!

Sorry, must pay more attention to the profiles:>) Unfortunately that link is the only one I know of that refers to the recovery mode problem. I'll have another dig around and if I find anything else I'll let you know. The only other thing I can think of is to run Disk Utility repair on your iPod and see if that helps. It's a shot in the dark I'm afraid.
Set up iTunes "not" to open when you connect the iPod.
Enable Disk Use on the iPod
Eject the iPod and shut down iTunes
Reconnect the iPod and open Disk Utility
Click on your iPod in the Utility pane and choose Repair Disk.
Close Disk Utility and open iTunes.

  • HT201413 Ipod stuck on Recovery Mode

My ipod is stuck on recovery mode, whenever I go on itunes to restore it, my ipod's screen goes blank and is unable to restore it. A message also pops up on itunes stating that itunes is unable to restore the ipod error (40). I have tried the application Reboot yet it is still stuck on recovery mode.
Please tell me what should I do.

    Hi there Sammy1009,
You may find the troubleshooting steps in the article below helpful.
Resolve specific iTunes update and restore errors
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694
    Check for hardware issues
Try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good. • IPod stuck in recovery mode with home button not working

Hi, I was restoring my iPod and everything went fine until it was restarting with the apple logo and loading symbol. My iPod's home button hasn't been working in a while so I use assistive touch. Now the iPod is stuck in recovery mode and I can't press the home button, I don't know what to do. Pls help!

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
Whenit says place the iPod in recoivery mode:
Place the iPod in recovery mode using one of these programs:

    or
    http://joshuabailey1997.wordpress.com/2010/09/02/recboot-v1-3/
    If necessary:
    Download QTMLClient.dll & iTunesMobileDevice.dll for RecBoot
    and
    RecBoot tip
RecBoot may have problems on 64X windows, then try:
Tenorshare ReiBoot – Enter & Exit iPhone, iPad, iPod Recovery Mode with a Single Click
    For MAC or PC
    The Firmware Umbrella - TinyUmbrella
    Installs blootware on PC too
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Help!!! Ipod stuck in recovery mode!!

My IPod touch (4th generation 8G) is stuck in recovery mode. When I try to restore it ITunes says that an error (1604) has occurred. I have tried switching USB ports and using different cables but nothing works!! And sometimes ITunes doesn't even recognise that my IPod is plugged in, I know it is because my computer makes the noise that means something is plugged in!! Please help!!!

    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
