A135-S2326 replacing hard drive (bad sectors) Need advice and opinions Please

Hi, (note pic below of my computers actual specs from this morning)
I have a Satellite A135-S2326. It has the max memory at 2GB, it came with 512 and I upgraded to 2GB. It runs Windows Vista Home Edition...
Anyhow, it accidentally fell off my bed a few days ago (darn dogs) and damaged my hard drive. Boot problems, errors, bad sectors, etc. I have tried everything to fix and to no avail. While I am currently using it I know I need to replace the hard drive ASAP before I can't turn it on at all one day... I am now saving all my files and stuff I need off of it to an external drive. The laptop did not come with a windows Vista restore CD so I am using Acronis software to make an image of the hard disc, hopefully it will work and I won't have to purchase my own copy of windows Vista.
Some questions I have are:
1.) Is it possible to upgrade the hard drive to a faster one / better one when I replace?
     The hard drive that came preinstalled is a Hitachi HTS541680J9SA00 80GB, which I believe from spec's documentation is a 5400RPM Serial- ATA ???
     What is the max size I can get for replacement and what is the max RPM, or do I HAVE to use a 5400RPM???
     What do you suggest?
2.) I have a copy of windows XP Professional w/SP2. Is it possible to put this windows XP Pro.w/SP2 on a fresh hard drive in the Satellite A135-S2326? If so, is there a different hard drive that I must have to do that? Also if an XP install is possible on a new hard drive, which drivers must I have for this laptop when I do it??
3.) And finally, could this laptop handle windows 7 business? Only asking because I can get a VERY cheap copy of windows 7 business from my school...I'm in college at DeVry and can get a copy of Windows 7 delivered to my door in 2 weeks for less then $30.00. So thought that MAY be an option....??? Not sure if my other spec's can handle it though???
4.) What would you suggest I do with the options I have, what is best thing to do in your opinion??

You can use ANY 2.5" SATA hard drive of any size in that system. I would recommend one of the Western Digital Scorpio BLue's as they are reliable and offer good performance.
If it runs Vista it will run Windows 7. I would wait a bit before trying Win7 though as Toshiba hasn't released all of the Windows 7 drivers yet.
As for Windows XP, while it is possible to install XP on that system (and quite easily for that matter) Toshiba doesn't provide any of the XP drivers needed to get it to run properly. You could determine all of the various chipsets the system uses and go to each chipsat manufacturer's support site to see if they provide an XP driver to get it working, but I don't guarantee that they have all of the needed drivers. If you do decide to go ahead with this let me know and I'll post the directions for installing XP onto a SATA hard drive that doesn't ahve a floppy drive.
Right now your best choice is to replace the old hard drive and restore the system from your Acronis image. When ALL of the Windows 7 drivers become available you could install it in a dual boot configuration to determine if you prefer it or not. It is both a step up and a step back from Windows Vista. Some people will like it while others won't. Only you will be able to determine which you prefer.

I have a 15 inch MacBook pro, early 2011 model, with the Fujitsu 7200 rpm hard drive. I'm using the latest version of Yosemite. ( 10.10.2) My computer is loaded with maximum memory, the optional video card. I recently bought a program called Drive Genius 4 because my computer seemed slow and Safari was locking up. I then started getting frequent bad sector error messages from the programs resident hard drive module. It advised me to immediately reformat the hard drive with one pass of zeros, to mark off the bad sectors.
Testing with Mac's hard drive utility, with one of Apple's technician's on the phone, indicated that everything was alright. I decided to re-formated the hard drive using one pass of zeros to mark off the bad sectors. I used Mac's hard drive utility for this. I left one small partition intact because I thought it might have important information that identifies my computer as a real Macintosh product. I then did a clean re-instalation of Yosemite from a download I stored on a backup drive. I then restored my programs from a recent backup. However, I was using a third party backup program called "SuperDuper!" for Mac from Softonic. I used it because it is much faster than Mac's backup. Now, my computer is running much faster. I'm also having no trouble with Safari, except for last night. I got stuck into some internet code that looked like it was trying to get me to install malware by clicking "OK" in a box. I couldn't get out of the tab, even by trying to force quit Safari. So I closed down by using the shut down button. Strangely enough, the site reappeared after I rebooted my computer, even though I have "Safari opens with a new window" in the general Safari preferences. But this time I was able to close the bad window.
I can't get any information about the effectiveness of Drive Genius 4 from Mac tech support because they're not allowed to comment about third party software. But it has excellent reviews from users and Mac publications.
Question 1: Should I take Drive Genius 4s bad sector warnings seriously and replace the hard drive? I did a thorough physical drive test with "Drive Genius 4" immediately after my re-format and it tested alright. I just received a bad sector warning this morning from a module in Drive Genius 4 called "Drive Pulse." It's supposed to constantly monitor ones hard drive for failure. I have read many complaints about my Fujitsu hard drive failing. I've been using computers since the early DOS days and I never had a hard drive fail. I occasionally would develop bad sectors but I used a utily like "Norton" to mark off the bad sectors and move the data. Even though this would occasionally happen, I never had a catastrophic hard drive failure. But now, I'm reading recommendations all over the web to replace any hard drive with the first bad sector warning.
Question 2:, Should I try to reformat the drive again and include the small sector I left intact the last time? This time, I would use Mac's built in backup program, simply out of superstition. I have no knowledge whether any particular backup program is better than another. I don't completely trust Mac tech support because they are restricted by their company's proprietary regulations. (Sorry Mac, I was once a big fan, but your new note books, with their soldered in components, is a low blow. It's obviously made, IMHO, as a form of planned obsolescence.)
Question 3: I read several complaints from self installers who stripped screws to gain access to the had drive. Some people claimed that the screws are made from very soft metal. This actually happened to me with an older 13 inch Mac Notebook, when I added more memory. Luckily, the compartment stays closed with one bad screw.
I don't trust the local Apple's genius crew to do the installation. Why? After numerous visits, they couldn't even diagnose a simple iPhone problem. They were very unpleasant and arrogant, suggesting that my phone's problem didn't exist. I became so exasperated that I threatened to pay off my AT&T phone contract early if they didn't help me. They sent me a new phone if I would agree to leave a deposit until they received my old one. Now that's service!

I can comment about it. Drive Genius will report false positives and may be responsible for causing disk corruption. Get rid of it. It's junk your Mac does not need.
"Mac publications" that accept advertising are necessarily biased, and cannot be relied upon for accurate information. Do you really think they'll publish a negative review about a product from a company supplying the revenue they need to survive?

You should. Hard disk drives are wear items. Fortunately, they are also inexpensive enough to have several backups. At the first sign of failure, plan to replace it ASAP. Having a backup plan such as Time Machine makes that a non-event.

Replaced Hard Drive - Do I need to purchase software again?

My Macbook hard drive failed, and it was not recoverable. We replaced a hard drive. Do I need to purchase softwares (Kenotes) again? I purchased this software about 6 months ago from the online apple store. I still do have an Apple ID. My OS is Lion.

If you purchased Keynote from the Mac app store, no, you do not need to purchase it again. Go to the app store, click on the Purchases tab and look for Keynote and click the Install button to the right.
If you purchased Keynote as part of the iWork suite on a disk, you should still have that disk and you can reinstall it using that. If you do not have the disk you will need to purchase again.

Replacing hard drive - new screws needed

Hello Everyone, I need to fit a new hard drive in my iMac and the last owner has ruined the screws that hold the drive in its housing. Can anyone tell me which screws I have to buy - do they have a name/size etc. I have done this job many times and have never come across screw heads that are 'rounded out' before. Presumably the last owner didn't know his own strength!!!! Thanks

Well they're 6 - 32 close to pan head or binding head but flatter, Phillips head. The originals are like #0 Phillips so if you jam a #2 in there it's easy to round them out.

You can replace it with a solid state drive, see the one OWC sells here. The video on how to install it is here.

If it were me, I'd go with a solid state drive, as the prices have come down recently and the performance improvement is noticeable.

Need help with replacement hard drive

My hard drive has stopped working on this computer and since i only purchased it on 10/2012 I really don't want to replace it just yet. I am trying to buy a new hard drive but I would like a Seagate. I want to upgrade from 1 TB to 2TB. I was wondering if there is a Seagate product out there that would be compatable with the original hard drive but in 2 TB.The original hard drive is a HDD GNRC 1 TB SATA 3 ECO 7200 rpm 3.5". I was looking at a Seagate 2TB SATA 6.0 but I do not know is the SATA 6 will work with the original SATA 3. Can you please help me or guide me in the right direction for a replacement. The dead drive that was removed is a Conner CP30085E 85MB 3.5in SCSI 50 PIN. Also I have OS 7.1 is there a later system that would work. Note the tools floppy disk boots perfectly.

Scarcity doesn't justify egregious price gouging. An 84 MB SCSI hard drive should not cost that much. Did you try an eBay search for a "50-pin SCSI hard drive?" I just did and found some larger drives for far less than either of the prices you got from 4drives.com. It doesn't have to be an Apple-branded drive, although that helps when some third-party drives aren't supported by Apple's disk formatting utilities. You can also check eBay for an OS 7.6.1 retail version/universal installer disk or OS 7.6 and then download the OS 7.6.1 Update. I'd want at least 16 MBs of installed memory to run OS 7.6.1, but your Color Classic is maxed out with a pair of 4 MB SIMMs plus 2 MBs of the 4 MBs of onboard RAM, for a total of 12 MBs.

Replacment Hard Drive from third party vendor for old 3rd gen Ipod

I have a 3 generation 20gb ipod, and after it`s 10,000 drop the hard drive dies. For several months I seach the net for a company to buy a replacment Hard Drive from. I settle upon "Ipodmechanic.com" for my replacement part becuase, they have a one year warrenty, apple certified, and have slightly cheaper prices than there competitors, plus the website looks nice. Anyway I order a 10gb instead of a 20 because I want to save some money and I don`t need all that space.
I get the Hard Drive a couple of days later and install it. Oviously something is wrong from the start and I figure It can be fixed with a restore from the ipod updater. Instead of a fix I get the words can not initilize restore please restore again. The situation continues to repeat itself with not solution. I can not fix my Ipod and I am stuck with a $140 Hard Drive. Also the packege the Hard Drive came in had in permenet marker, the words and symblo (Bad ?). I am not angary at what they sent me wether used or new, as long as it works. But what makes me angry is after I bought the Hard Drive Ipodmechanic stopped answering my emails. I had to ask for there phone number because it wasn`t posted on there site. I can not get in contact with them and if so I must request my bank to sees the fund they have of mine. I don`t believe they are doing this on purpose, maybe they are on vacation or had an emergancy but, it would be nice if they would inform there customers they are away, but, still with no respones what choice is there when they have my $140 and a warrenty they can not make good on.

IPod 4th Gen Click Wheel replaced hard drive; problems

Ok, So I replaced the 20gb hard drive with a new EXACT replacement hard drive, no other problems with iPod. But iTunes will not recognize it because the hard drive is not formatted. I tried formating it with Disk Utility but keep getting error messages. Im not sure what format to use. When the 4th gen came out Intel processors werent here so Im sure I need to simply format as Mac OS Extended. There is no HFS= format in Disk Utility. Im lost as to what to do. Please help??!

MacBook Pro does not boot past apple screen after replacing hard drive

After replacing hard drive on MacBook Pro 13 inch early 2011 model, the screen only boots to the apple logo. Do I need to re-install the OS?

The problem is that the OS is not in any where else of the MacBook Pro than in the HD / SSD. If you replace the Hard Drive, then you will need to Re-install OSX into that hard drive, it's pretty easy.
1) Power up your Macbook Pro, as fast as you can press and hold the Option key (ALT). You'll see that it opens the bootable-devices you have, you'll see a Recovery partition, click it.
(If the Hard Drive contains data do the following)
2) In the menu select Disk Utility.
3) In Disk Utility go ahead and select the Hard Drive that is inside the MBP.
4) Erase the content.
(If the Hard Drive contains no data continue with the following jumping the last 3 steps).
5) Select Re-install OSX.
6) Select the Hard Drive in which you want to install it.
Follow the steps of everything else (it should take approximately 1 hour to do the whole thing).

My iMac (2010 intel model) does not recognise or communicate with my external seagate drive as a time machine for back ups since I had the 1TB Seagate replacement hard drive as part of the replacement prgram with OSX LION 10.5.8 installed.
Is this because I need to update the time machine drive itself?

Replacement hard drive not shown in Disk Utility

So I just finished installing a replacement hard drive for my PB 12". I got a Seagate 2.5" ATA Momentus 5400 etc as per my previous thread. But after firing it up from the install disk, the new volume fails to show up. Anyone else had this problem? And fixed it? Opening up the case again now...

Don't know if your problem solved. Had the same thing happen to me. Was told that new HD was bad (unlikely), Logic board was bad (disaster). Then finally was tole by another tech (OWC) that it sounded like a bad cable connection. Took it apart again and reseated both ends of HD cable a couple of times. Started up and the HD recognized by disk utility. Works great since. Hope your problem as simple as mine.

How to reinstall os x/data after replacing hard drive

I'm about to replace my hard drive after the original crashed. I have a macbook pro 17" and I have the original backup cd's, also a time machine backup on external hd.I'm installing a 1tb hdd from the 750gb original.
What is the sequence which I need to follow to restore my OS and data? The original OS is Snow Laopard, the one I ugraded to is Moutain Lion.
Apart from the sequence will the Ext hd have the operating system backed up on it or do I need to load the original OS disc and then the Apps disc or only the Ext hd backup?
As I'm replacing my hard drive do I need to format the new drive in disc utilities still, if so how?
Will I be asked for any passwords?

Install the new HDD in your MBP.
Start the MBP with the Snow Leopard install disk holding down the C key.
Proceed with the installation until you see a menu bar on top of the display.
From the menu bar click on UTILITIES.
From the drop down menu select Disk Utility.
Select Disk Utility>Erase and format the HDD to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
Proceed to install Snow Leopard. It will probably be 10.6.3.
Open SOFTWARE UPDATE and install 10.6.8.
Then you may install Mt. Lion or Mavericks.
Run Time Machine and install your user data. Refer to this web site for assistance if need be:

You will need to boot from some alternate boot device to accomplish this, if you did not initialize the drive before installing it.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to use FireWire target disk mode.
If your MacBook has a DVD reader and you have a Mac OS X Installer/Utilities DVD, such as the one that shipped with it, you can boot from that DVD, answer only the "what Language" question, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Then examine the Utilities menu or the Installer menu and Find Disk Utility.

Here are answers to your question.
1) You can upgrade to 500GB and its possbile without any problems
2) No constraints on size or make. You can use any brand or manufacturer of your own choice
3) You need to install your OS using recovery disks. There is a guide available over here
4) There will not be any problems if you using recovery disks on new HDD
5) There wont be any conflict. If you do face any issues, you can always post your query on the forums.
6) Unfortunately there is no other way. If the HDD test fails, it means its gone. Only option is to replace HDD.
