I have an HP Pavilion dv7t-6c00 notebook, 17in.  I believe the display backlight is no longer working.  I can use external monitor just fine.  The onboard display has same image (I mirrored displays) as the external monitor.  However, the image is barely visible and only in well lit room.
I am looking for a suitable replacement backlight.  Please let me know how to find that information out or please provide me with the pertinents and I will search for it myself.

I understand you're looking for a replacement backlight for your HP dv7t notebook.
The backlight is not available as a stand alone part from HP. You would need to replace the entire display panel. You can find a replacement display panel with the following part numbers:
17.3-in, FHD, LED, AntiGlare display panel for use only with computer models equipped with an Intel processor: 666397-001
17.3-in, HD+, LED, BrightView display panel for use with all computer models: 666396-001

  • Satellite C855D-S5106 - when lid is closed/reopened, backlight resumes, picture does not.

    Win. 7 Ult. 64-bit, Toshiba Satellite C855D-S5106, all BIOS and display drivers updated... Things to note: This NOT an issue with sleep or hibernation, or waking up from such states, as it wakes up just fine. It is also not a BIOS or drivers issue. I have it set in Power Settings that closing the lid does nothing. Yet whenever I open the lid after it has been closed, the backlight comes back on, but the picture does not. To get the picture to return, I either have to put the laptop to sleep and then wake it back up again, or, more convieniently, by using a program called Hotkeycontrol to set a custom hotkey to turn the the display on and off, and this works every time. I had this problem a couple years ago (a recent Windows repair "corrected" this solution), and I vaguely remember the solution being to change something display or policy-related, like, change it so that the lid closing action action looks for a trigger related to volume or a sound device, to act as an inactive placeholder of sorts, instead of what it really tries to do, which causes the problem in the first place, as weird as that seems. Unfortunately, that's about all I can remember, as it's been so long since I had to do it. All the Googling I do just brings me to posts about changing power settings again, or updating various BIOS and display drivers (when it's not bringing me to questions about waking up from sleep or hibernation, that is), which I've already done, and I know not to be the solution in this instance.     This model shipped with Windows 8 and support.toshiba.com seems to have very limited Windows 7 driver support (e.g. no chipset drivers, display drivers, or power utilities.)

  • Mysterious forces changing backlight brightness

    Some mysterious forces are changing my laptop's brightness and I can't seem to figure it out what it is.
    For example, if my battery gets below 10% (also, why 10%?), it automatically changes brightness to something very low.
    Similarly, if battery gets fully charged, it changes brightness. It also happens when I plug it into the AC or remove the adapter.
    I've looked everywhere, tried changing settings (I really don't remember which ones anymore), but nothing seems to work.
    Also, I've xfce4-power-manager installed, but closing it doesn't seem to effect this backlight changing.
    Laptop-mode-tools is also set up, but backlight control is disabled.
    My only idea is that it's changed by the driver, but how can I control it?

    Also, changing backlight to vendor doesn't fix this. Instead it messes up xfce4-power-manager's backlight control.
    Forgot to mention, I'm running a simple Openbox installation.

    Alright, an update.
    The same thing happens even without running X at all. Even the brightness control keyboard hotkeys work without an X server running.
    So it seems that they interact directly with hardware and it's not related to software at all. I think it's safe to say that the brightness change events happening on charger plug/unplug are related to this as well.
    So if there's nothing in BIOS (I checked) I guess it's not fixable. I could set up an dirty hack using acpi handler scripts although it seems like an awful solution.
    Or have you guys any other ideas?

  • Yoga 2 Pro WONT TURN ON (backlight flickers)

    First time poster here,
    I recently purchased a yoga 2 pro approximately one week ago in Hong Kong from a technology reseller (Fortress). Was super excited, majority of reviews were glowing etc. However, after taking home and using it for less than an hour, the whole computer just suddenly turned off. All i had done was install AVG anti-virus, real player, and Hearthstone (blizzard game, didnt play it yet). When i tried to turn it on again the power button and backlight keyboard would flicker every 5 seconds, but no screen came on. I tried with/without being plugged in to no avail. I wrote this off as bad luck and swapped it the next day for a new one.
    New one worked great for about 4 days, when the screen suddenly went haywire going all fuzzy with heaps of static (like one of those really old TVs when u get bad antenna reception). It was not responding to any keyboard or touchscreen commands, so I hard reset it (held power button for about 10 seconds). When i attempted to turn it back on again, same thing happend as the first laptop, flickering every 5 seconds, no screen. I will add that for these 4 days it worked I had mainly used it to watch youtube, play hearthstone, and watch movies. No other issues came up before the sudden breakdown. However I also noticed that when I played Hearthstone (a very low graphic intensity game btw) the laptop base got very very hot. I had also set my energy manager settings to high performance mode (part of the 'fix' for the off yellow colour).
    I've now swapped it back for a THIRD yoga 2 pro. The salesman said this was the last time they would swap and if it happened again we'd have to go through Lenovo. 
    I've had it for a few hours and it seems to be running fine but i wanted to post up this experience up to see if others have had similar issues, or might know what might have caused two of these beautiful laptops to cease working. The salesman suggested one possibility as being the laptop overheating to the point that it damaged the hardware in some way, although I would have thought that most laptops would have sufficient protocols to prevent damage to the laptop in this way. Any other suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

    I have the exact same problem.  It first happend within one hour of opening the box.  However, the problem went away...returned intermitently...and now my yoga 2 has a totally dark screen and flikcering keyboard.  I was previously a big proponent of the machine.  Now, i'm thoroughly disappointed.  Customer service does not seem to have any answers.

    The backlight on my Treo Pro will not stay on, unless I hold down the middle Palm button with extreme ammounts of pressure. The backlight settings are set to work but it does not work. I need help I've tried everything including talking to the support chat, AND I have googled it and can not find it.

    There is a little program you can install that lets you control the keyboard backlighting. It's called KeyLight, and you can find it here:

    (I've used the version for the 800w, but I can't recall whether I've used the version for the Treo Pro.)

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro no backlight following keyboard spill.

    I am new here.  Can I get help with a mid 2010 MacBook Pro?  It appears to have a LED backlit screen.  A keyboard spill left me with a display problem.  In bright light at the right angle you can see that the display is still working, but there is zero backlighting available.  I have replaced inverters on other machines in the past with this problem, but they were not LED backlit.  I think this problem is different.  Can someone give me a clue what to do to fix this please?  Thank you!!!

    I wouldn't be concerned with the backlight.
    Spill Cleaning
    Some liquid has just spilled into your Mac. What should you do?
    Do
    Immediately shut down the computer and unplug the power cord.
    Remove the computer's battery (if you can)
    Disconnect any peripherals (printers, iPods, scanners, cameras, etc.)
    Lay the computer upside down on paper towels to get as much liquid as possible to drip out.
    Note what was spilled on your Mac.
    Bring the computer into an Apple store or AASP as soon as possible.
    Don't
    Don't try to turn it back on. Liquids can help electrical current move about the components of your Mac in destructive ways.
    Don't shake the computer (this will only spread the liquid around).
    Don't use a hair dryer on it (even at a low setting a hair dryer will damage sensitive components).

  • [Solved] Lenovo u460 Ambient Light Sensor/Backlight/Keyboard Weirdness

    Hi all,
    I have tried to figure this problem out ever since I first installed Arch a few months ago (coming from Fedora/Ubuntu where this never occured). This is going to be a little hard to describe, so please bear with me. Here are the symptoms:
    1) The brightness controls (Fn+Up/Fn+Down) don't affect the screen brightness. Also, if acpi_backlight=legacy, then the message "ACPI: Failed to switch the brightness" pops up in dmesg. If acpi_backlight=vendor, then nothing gets printed, though the tty console cursor does "blip" as if a normal key were pressed.
    2) If acpi_backlight=legacy, the message "ACPI: Failed to switch the brightness" pops up in dmesg repeatedly until I do what I think "resets" the ALS, which is to press Fn+Down several times followed by Fn+Up several times. If ambient light conditions change, these messages start again.
    3) The characters ^@ appear in the console occasionally (thought it only seems to happen before the login prompt or after a shutdown signal).
    4) Occasionally I will get a system beep during boot (which may or may not be related).
    5) This problem seems to insert invisible characters into stdin, so I cannot login in a tty (unless I do the aforementioned "reset"). This does not happen in an X session.
    6) I can set the screen brightness through /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness (0-10) and /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness (0-4882). I believe I can also use setpci. If acpi_backlight=vendor, then acpi_video0 gets renamed to ideapad, and brightness can no longer be changed through there. intel_backlight still works.
    7) Keys do not repeat (unless I do the "reset" above).
    What I've tried:
    1) Setting acpi_backlight and acpi_osi
    2) Extract and recompile the DSDT, fixing errors and warnings, compile custom kernel with new DSDT included.
    3) Reinstall from scratch
    4) Looked to see if there was a BIOS update. I seem to have the latest (v1.04)
    So, any ideas on how to fix this? Let me know if I forgot to post something.

    I thought I would follow up on this, since I finally found a solution (I don't know if it's the correct solution, but it works for me). The cause of the problems was indeed the ambient light sensor (ALS) sending acpi events that were not having any effect (I saw this using acpi_listen from the acpid package).
    So, with acpid installed and started in systemd, I changed the /etc/acpi/handler.sh to add the following cases:

    Now the ALS can change the backlight brightness and all is well. Also, since I don't actually like the ALS, I did put some tin foil and tape in front of it so that it will always register a dark room. (So far I have not found any way to disable the ALS programatically outside of Windows)
    Do note that I don't have acpi_osi or acpi_backlight set to anything in the kernel boot parameters, since using acpi_backlight=vendor doesn't work right as I mentioned in my original post.

  • Macbook 13" Backlight Turns On and Off when Screen Moves

    I've started having an annoying problem with my Macbook. Sometimes when I open the lid, the backlight won't come on. If I move the lid around for a while, the backlight sometimes comes on, but if I make any sudden movements with the laptop, the backlight will go back off. It's getting to a point where I might have to fidget with the lid for a good 10 minutes before the screen comes back on and I can't deal with it anymore. I know the screen is still working because if I put it under light, I can sort of see what's supposed to be there.
    It seems likely that the problem is a loose cable somewhere, but I took the screen apart and couldn't see anything glaringly wrong. The laptop is out of warranty and I have a significant amount of experience with PC repairs, so I plan on fixing this myself. Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? I keep reading that most times people have problems with the backlight, it's because the inverter has gone bad. However, the fact that the problem is caused and resolved by moving the screen around makes me doubt that the inverter is the issue here.

    Second, are you running Boot Camp or Apple OS X when you put the machine to sleep?
    Third -- do you have Bluetooth turned off? (It's a known problem if you have other Bluetooth devices on that are searching for Bluetooth devices -- like leaving your iPhone near your MBP and both have Bluetooth enabled...
    Your not leaving an iPhone plugged into the USB port are you? Unplug it and use a wall charger.
    What else is on your network that might cause it to keep turning on? Do you use anything within the house that searches for a network signal throughout the day? -- Slingbox, for example?

  • Backlight issues

    Hi all,
    I've had my MacBook since August 2006, and I know there's been screen flickering issues where the brightness of the screen goes up and down w/o F1 or F2 being touched. That happened to me every once and awhile and I've been dealing b/c I have no Apple Care.
    Problem is that my backlight has started cutting out completely for no reason. I can see the outline of the display, but the light isn't on so it's impossible for me to do anything. I have to move the screen up and down, press on the right corner of the screen way too hard, or play with the F1 and F2 buttons for a few minutes and, usually, the light will pop back on. A few times it hasn't though and I've had to do a restart. I've noticed since this problem started a few weeks ago that the 'lighter flickering' has stopped completely.
    I want to call Apple about it, but I don't know if they'd help me out or not since I have no Apple Care. I'm also an English major in college right now during finals week, so I'm having to backup all my manuscript revisions onto a jump drive every 5 min just in case my screen gives out for good.
    Anyone else have experience w/ this problem? Should I call the help center? They've always been really good to me before, but this is a problem I can't recreate on command (extremely random) and I assume they could tell me I'd damaged it myself somehow (I haven't.)

    It's unfortunate you don't have Apple Care because your MB is out of warranty now. Even though you didn't cause the failure, Apple is not obligated to replace your inverter board under terms of the warranty. They might since, as you say, they have been really good to you in the past, but no guarantees.
    By the way, you won't completely lose data over this. Even if the screen never lights up again, the data is fine and can be retreived either by attaching an external display or by putting the Mac in Firewire target mode and getting the data off onto another Mac. Good luck.

    It's hard to reproduce entirely here, but the point is that the config grep returns fb_backlight just above mode helpers/tilebitting, but above those are foreign endianness, and that's not where the backlight setting is.
    The card is the Intel 945GM; on the default Arch kernel I can use xbacklight to adjust brightness. With my custom compiled one, I get "no outputs have backlight property" with xbacklight and, indeed, /sys/class/backlight is empty.
    Would someone kindly tell me which kernel option provides the backlight property for this card?

    Most of that seems about right, and the end stuff is all specific laptop drivers.
    I'll post back when this is done. The only other thing I can think of is the fact that I compiled in i915 and intel_agp vs. having them as modules. Should that make any difference?

  • What is the Keyboard Backlight attached to?

    Hey there.
    A while back I spilled some milk on my macbook pro 15" old model (NOT the unibody) keyboard and although I finally got the sticky keys issue sorted out (I spent a good 5-6 hours on my day off taking off all the keys and cleaning them, and then putting them back), the backlight of the keyboard doesn't illuminate the entire keyboard anymore.
    I went to my local Apple store's genius bar and they told me that by replacing the keyboard (for a mere $150 USD), I would also be fixing the backlight. I took my macbook pro to my local MacTek, however, to compare what they would quote me for replacing the keyboard, but THEY said that in order to replace the LED light I'd have to replace the top case, and the keyboard alone wouldn't do it.
    Then I take it back to the Apple store (MacTek was more expensive due to their having to order parts) and ask them about it and this time they tell me that I WOULD have to replace the top case to fix the LED, which would cost $300+. Obviously not worth it just to fix the backlight when nothing else about the top case is visibly wrong.
    Then I get a little curious when I get home and do a google search for the makeup of the keyboard and find a site with pictures that show the LED IS actually part of the keyboard O_O I dunno what to believe here.
    Assuming my goal is to fix the LED keyboard backlight, just what is it that I'd have to replace?

    I'd click "solved" for your post but actually I have one more question. I took the MBP to a certified repair shop, and they order a keyboard from apple. Last week (7 days ago) they said they received the new keyboard and were replacing the old one now.
    Then, an hour or two later, they called me back and told me that they think Apple sent them a defective keyboard, because now for some reason my computer "won't turn on." O_O
    So I called them today and the guy just said he's waiting on the second replacement keyboard. My question is, can that realistically happen? That is, a bad keyboard causing the entire system not to be able to turn on?
    (good thing I backed up before taking it to get repaired, eh..?)

  • Random shutdowns/backlight shutoff.

    Hi - I'll try to keep this saga brief, but that may be a tall order considering the circumstances.
    Back story:
    The first time I sent my iBook G4 in to AppleCare was June 2006, when the display was showing a single, pixel-high line across the bottom of the screen (about 1/2 inch up from the bottom) when I would adjust the angle of the lid. It came back fixed, but with a worse display issue! Instead of just a line, the screen would now flicker (NOT a backlight problem, in random stripes across the display itself) and turn to grayscale instead of the normal colors. It did this in response to the slightest vibrations (typing, touching the trackpad) and adjustments of the lid. I sent it in again with explicit information about what caused the malfunction and how to replicate it.
    The iBook was promptly sent back to me, without any contact being made beforehand, because the techs "couldn't recreate the problem." Great. Allow me to note that I "recreated" the problem the FIRST time I booted it up out of the return box from AppleCare - within about thirty seconds. Needless to say, at this point I was less than pleased. I wound up taking the iBook into the university bookstore, where we have an Apple tech but not a full genius bar. I was able to show him the problem in person and leave the iBook in his care. Several days later, I found out that he had to ship it off to AppleCare anyway because it was something they'd looked at before.
    It finally came back and yes, the display was no longer going wonky, but I now had a lid that would not align properly and thus would not latch, a non-working microphone, and a small scratch on my LCD. I had let the lid and scratch slide for a couple of weeks, but was getting ready to call Apple Care about the microphone (I needed it for a class) when my hard drive decided to take a nosedive. Over a series of a few crashes, in the midst of which I was able to back up my most important materials - thank goodness - the hard drive completely died and the iBook would eventually either only boot up to a blue screen, a gray screen with the apple and spinning gear, a gray screen with nothing, or a blue screen with an OS 9 icon in the middle. Off it went to Apple Care, AGAIN.
    It came back today with a new hard drive. I used it for a few minutes before retrieving my power source, thinking it would be fine since though my battery runs down quickly, it was showing a 65% charge and I had a few minutes. At this time, I was still using the pre-installed Panther and getting ready to reinstall Tiger and all my other stuff. I was chatting on iChat when the iBook completely shut down.
    I went and got my power source, plugged it in, and booted back up. I got an error message saying my date and time was set to some time before 2001... Except when I actually checked my clock/calendar, it was set to the correct time. My friend suggested I might need to do a PMU reset, so I shut down and did so.
    The iBook worked fine for a couple of hours, until my backlight randomly turned off. It did NOT go to sleep - the backlight just turned off. This has never happened to me before - I could barely make out the outline of my open windows on the screen, so I knew it was the backlight out and not a crash. I closed the lid and the backlight flickered on the way down. When I re-opened it, the light came back on.
    Several hours later, after I'd reinstalled Tiger, with a 99-100% charged battery, with my power source plugged in and the light green - another crash. I believe this was an ACTUAL crash, like the first one I described. I attempted to restart the iBook and it wouldn't power back up. I tried several times, then did another PMU reset, and it finally booted back up.
    MOMENTS after it powered back up from crash #2, crash #3 occurred. Or so I thought. The iBook would again not respond to the power button, so I shut the lid and heard a chime after it was shut. I reopened the lid and the iBook was booting back up. I don't know if this was a backlight malfunction I mistook as a crash, or what.
    Note: none of the times the laptop actually CRASHED did I get a low battery warning or any advance indication I was having some sort of a power failure.
    On to another backlight failure: it was about an hour after the last crash. I was configuring some World of Warcraft settings in windowed mode, with the battery at full charge and the power source plugged in and green. The screen went black and the laptop made a clicking/swishing noise I associate with shutting down. As I was preparing to throw it at the wall (kidding) I noticed that I still felt a slight vibration and heard a slight humming from the body of the iBook. I listened and looked carefully, and sure enough, the iBook was still running, but the backlight had again failed. (Apparently the backlight shutting down is the noise I'm familiar with.) I moved my cursor around, tried hitting "esc" and doing other "wake up" things but nothing would work. This time, shutting and reopening the lid also did nothing. I couldn't see anything to do a regular shutdown, so I did a hard shutdown by holding down the power button. Upon rebooting, the backlight worked like a charm.
    Thirty minutes after this, I experienced another actual crash - complete shutdown of the system. I was playing World of Warcraft in fullscreen mode when the screen went black and all system stopped. No noise, no vibrations - it was definitely off this time. I attempted to power back up but again the iBook would not respond to the power button. I closed and reopened the lid, and it still would not respond. I reset the PMU and nothing happened. Finally, I removed and reinserted the battery and it then booted up. Upon booting this time, I again got the clock/calendar set to pre-2001 message, and yet the clock and calendar were both set to the correct time. The battery showed 97% charge, and the power supply had been connected the entire time.
    So, that leads me to now. I have no clue what is wrong with it at this point and I am absolutely frustrated that every time I send this thing into Apple Care it comes back with problems - either the same problems, not fixed, or entirely new problems it didn't have before.
    I'd really appreciate it if somebody could give me a clue what might be going on here. I repaired permissions, attempted to repair the disk (no repair was necessary) and am currently getting all the updates to take me from OS X 10.4 to 10.4.8. I'm just frustrated because I'm the only person I know out of a whole bunch of very happy Mac customers to have this many problems - I really feel like I have a lemon, but I was told last time I spoke to Mac that they won't completely replace my unit unless I have the SAME problem repaired three times. I'll avoid getting ranty here, and I do plan to call Apple Care in the morning (Saturday 12/1) but I thought I'd post here anyway to see if anybody had any ideas or anecdotes they'd like to share.
    Some ideas I have that could be wrong:
    -- Logic board failure (Could explain the prior display issues and hard drive failure, I think)
    -- Battery (I know it's not holding a charge well, but I don't see what that would have to do with the backlight)
    -- Backlight out (Unrelated to crashes?)
    That's all I've got. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sounds like the infamous logic board problem that plagued the iBook G3 (Dual USB).
    When the iBook does a hard shutdown, it would be normal to get the message about the date being wrong. It's possible that if it automatically connects to the internet, it may immediately automatically reset so that when you check it, it's correct.
    Backlight problems? Again, familiar to many G3 owners:

    AppleCare's your best bet, but this will give you some "light" reading and something to think about until you get them called.

    The wish list only works on apps you have to pay for. To get it tap the icon of the app you want to save. After it opens at the upper right corner is a box with a arrow. Tap that then tap add to wish list list in the box that opens.

  • When I shut my lid the backlight goes off like it is supposed to, but comes back on after a while. It never used to do this, how can I fix it?

    This problem is a recent one (only has happened in the past 2-3 weeks). When I shut the lid it used to immediately sleep (the power light began to do its fade in and out, and the backlight turned off), but now when I close the lid, the power light stays on, the backlight goes off for a few seconds before coming on again (not sleeping properly?). Then the backlight will turn itself off again and the computer sleeps like it is supposed to. Is something wrong here and how can I fix it?

    I think its the same in 10.5 as in 10.6 (the example below). Do System Preferences > Keyboard. Looks like this:
    UNCHECK the box that reads, "Use all F1, F2, etc, keys as standard function keys," or hold the Fn key to use F11 and F12 for volume control. It looks like you have to own an Apple aluminum keyboard to get a function key on a desktop computer.

  • MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011 Backlight Keyboard Not Working?! Software Problem...

    So my "MacBook Pro 13" Early 2011" backlight keyboard hasn't been working. I have tried LabTick today, doesn't fix anything. Even in high or low lighting situations (dispite the Adjust keyboard brightness in low light being off) doesn't like to go on. It doesn't give me a circle with a cross like it does with that box checked in day light. It shows on the screen the
    16 dots fully light after hitting F6 fully, just it doesn't light up. I one time had to reset my Mac OS at the Apple Store, it fixed the problem, but when I restored with a time machine backup, it went back to this software problem. How can I fix this?! What is wrong with my OS? Mountain Lion? How can I fix this?!

    If it does not detect the display automatically, try going to system preferences>displays, click detect displays.
