A20m Largest Hard Drive Supported

I have a IBM Thinkpad A20m. I now have a 60 Gig Hard Drive in it but I want to know what the largest Hard Drive this Laptop will Support. I have the latest Bios installed by looking at the Lenovo Website Bios Information. I run an External 500 Gig Hard Drive but would like my Internal C Drive to be larger.

I don`t know what the largest HD size you can put into an A20m. It may be as low as 120GB. However these systems use the older parallel PATA interface and AFAIK the largest available HD of that type is 500GB.
If you want more capacity you can only do it with an external, USB-connected HD. One problem with that is that your system`s USB interface is the older, slower 1.1 standard. If you want to access the drive at USB 2.0 speeds you`ll need to get a PCMCIA card that has USB 2 support, e.g. from Amazon.

  • What's the largest hard drive size my 8600 can support?

    hi all,
Years ago,I noticed my 8100 Powermac couldn't support larger hard drives than 2GB so I had to partition. Now I have a 8600 Mac with a 4GB hard with no partition. What's the largest hard drive size my PowerMac 8600 can support?

Here's an 18GB SCSI HD on eBay that says it will work on a PM 8600. http://cgi.ebay.com/18-GB-IBM-SCSI-HARD-DRIVE-Apple-Power-Mac%7CG3%7CG4%7CG5-Wrt y_W0QQitemZ120360935737QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20090109?IMSfp=TL090109111005r37358
You could also install an ATA PCI card and probably go larger.

  • How can I partition my external hard drive supporting mac OS in one partition and windows OS in another?

Hello everyone, how can I partition my external hard drive supporting mac OS in one partition and windows OS in another?

    OK. Start with:
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two (2). Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Click on the Erase tab in DU's main window. Select one of the two partitions, preferably the first one, change the Format type: to MSDOS then click on the Erase button.

  • What is the largest hard drive I can upgrade to for MacBook Pro A1278 Early '11

What is the largest hard drive I can upgrade to for macbook pro A1278 Early 2011?  I have seen 750GB on some websites, but I would like a 1TB  I am looking for SATA 6.0GB, 1TB 7200.  Is this dependant on the physical size of the hard drive? I have seen a height of 15mm and 9.5 mm.  How do I know what will fit??

I have not seen any 7200 rpm 1 TB HDDs.  They all are 5400 rpm.  I would say that this HDD comes closest to your requirements.  Tomorrow, there may be others.

  • What is the largest hard drive that can be put in a Macbook Pro 17 MA897

I am looking to upgrade an existing Macbook Pro 17 model MA897 and am looking for the specifications as to the largest hard drive that can be installed and where is the best place to purchase drives.

The HDD makers have yet to breach the 1TB limit in the 2.5" formfactor. But there is hope, as one of the makers (Toshiba, IIRC) announced the discovery of a radical new way of magnetic encoding which will permit much denser packing of the magnetic domains in the rotating disk, and much higher capacities. Promised to come out with 3-4TB 2.5" devices before the year is out and maybe 10TB+ in the coming years. We'll have to wait and see.
BTW and since The Age of the Lion (and probably Mountain Lion too) has forsaken the need of an optical drive for system recovery, some users have decided to remove the no longer critical device and planting another HDD in its place. Might be looking into if you really need the capacity and don't care to lug even more weight above of what the 17" entails.

  • Largest hard drive available for MacBook?

Just saw the preview for Leopard - very excited about eventually buying it, but I'm wondering if my 80 gb hard drive will be large enough to take full advantage of its features while leaving space for my other stuff. (For the record, I have 35 gb available now.) Am I just being paranoid - and if I'm not, what's the largest hard drive (in storage space, of course) available for the MacBook at this time?

    david-
as far as i know, 160GB (hitachi travelstar). here is
    the link:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?Model=248
    &Type=Data%20Storage&TI=2021
no, you are not being paranoid. it doesn't matter if
it is the leopard or a new tom cruise screen saver.
eventhough 35GB is still alot of space (my dell i am
currently using has only 18GB total and i have a few
hundred megabytes left!), you'll eventually need a
bigger storage a year or so down the road.
how about an external hard drive?
    best luck!
An external hard drive for nearly full-time use with a laptop would be cumbersome at best, even if it were small, it would still take up one USB port most of the time. I'd rather swap out now or soon than that. Thanks for the input.

    I think the current answers are;
    200 GB for 7200 RPM
    500 GB for 5400 RMP

  • MSI MS-6163 Pro v.2.0 Hard Drive Support

I have a problem. I bought a 80 gig seagate Baracuda and I was only able to get 40 gigs out of it. I havent updated my Bios because i am not sure if it is going to support 80 gigs and over. I would like to know if the latest Bios update for MSI MS-6163 Pro v.2.0 will enable a larger hard drive support.
One more thing. If i stuff up my motherboard by installing wrong bios and get a boot block is there any other way of recovering the old bios. I could do nothing about my older gigabyte motherboard but I heard you can do something with the CMOS jumpers on ms-6163 if you get a boot block.

  • Whats the largest hard drive the Satellite A30 supports

Satellite A30-514 P4 2.8GHz/WXP HE/512MB/30GB/15TFT/DVD-CDRW . I have the latest and only bios update i can see under downloads for this machine.I have a 30gb disk.I am looking at either a 80gb or 100gb model.Does this model support these sizes. Also some of these new hitachi drives have one ata cable that supplys both data and power.Does anybody know if this laptop supports this connection or is it two cables. As i have not had a look yet.Any advice on what type of drive to use will be much appreciated.

    Hi Mike,
I have an 80Gb hard drive in my A30 at the moment. You will need a drive with similar physical dimensions as your existing drive. Cables are not an issue since the hard drive on the A30 is connected directly to a connector underneath the optical drive (this must be removed first to access the hard drive.
A suitable drive would be the MK8025GAS but you could also take the option of using a drive with a higher rotation speed. The original drive is 4200rpm and I am currently using a 5400rpm version in my A30. There is a little bit of extra heat produced but this is only really noticeable during heavy disk activity (virus scan, defragment, backup, etc.).
    regards,

  • What's the largest hard drive the macbook mobo can support?

its from august 2007 if that makes any difference
and once i get a new HD is there anyway to clone my hard drive for free?

I just installed this drive. It will work on yours also.

I also bought a USB enclosure to put my old drive in. No sense wasting a drive. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone it from the external drive onto my newly installed internal drive. If you don't want to buy an enclosure you can use an external drive to do the same thing. I use my old drive from my MacBook for storage space now.

  • Largest hard drive in Ultra-10?

I've got an Ultra 10 that I'd like to replace the hard drive in. Here are the specs on it:
    Motherboard: 375-0009
    OBP: 3.31
    CPU: 360 Mhz
    Memory: 512Mb
OS: Solaris 9 with latest patch cluster as of September
Right now It's got the 4.xx gig drive that came with it. I'd like to replace this with a much larger drive.
What is the largest drive that this system will reasonably support? So far I've not been able to find any definitive information on what size drives this system will support.
I've seen lots of posts from people here asking how to get drives working, but no responses that indicated that someone was trying to use a drive that was too big.
Is there an official answer to this question? If not, what is the largest capacity drive anyone has gotten to work in this kind of a system? Which vendor produced the drive?
    Thanks :)

I don't recall needing any specific geometry, it was pretty much plug-and-play. make sure that your OBP and OS are up to date and the format command should see all the space available.
For reference, I set mine up as:

  • Largest Hard Drive for a Ti/800mhz

I am thinking on replacing my 40g with a larger one or even replacing the superdrive with another hd, I was wondering if my Ti will only see a max of 120g like my PM/G4's, I know it will see larger ones using firewire but this is a laptop and using an external hd just don't make since,,,,

I found some new information on this question. I apologize for not discovering it sooner, but I only came across it on the Western Digital website. It appears that any model introduced after June 2002, and the listed models, can handle a larger drive. Mine was introduced in April 2002, and purchased new in September 2002. But...see my notes at the end of this post.
Apple article HT2544 addresses this issue (see (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2544?viewlocale=en_US#bootrom), as does Western Digital Knowledge Base Answer ID 927 (see http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=927).

Are EIDE drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary) supported in Mac systems
    Question
I am considering buying an EIDE drive larger than 137GB for my Mac system. Are EIDE drives larger than 137GB supported in Mac systems?
    Answer
Not all Mac systems can properly support EIDE drives larger than 137GB (128GB binary). In many cases, the system needs to be a newer Mac G4 or G5 system. According to Apple, there are two primary requirements that must be met to support these drives:
The computer must have Mac OS 10.2 or later
The system BootROM must provide support for the drive
For full details, please see Apple Document #86178.
Note: There are third-party controller cards designed for use with large EIDE drives and Macs. Please contact Apple or the card manufacturer to find out if a specific controller card will work with your Mac. According to Apple, you must still have OS version 10.2 or later, even with the controller card, to use the full drive capacity.
    +From Apple+:
There are two primary requirements that must be met for higher capacity hard drives to be fully utilized within a computer.
    1. The computer must have Mac OS X 10.2 or later.
    2. The computer must provide support for the drives via the BootROM.
    Products Affected
    Mac OS X 10.4, Mac OS X 10.3, Mac OS X 10.2, Mac OS X 10.5
Mac OS X 10.2 or later
The high capacity drive must be formatted using Mac OS X 10.2 or later in order for partition sizes beyond 128 GB to be recognized. If you plan to start the partition up from Mac OS 9.2.2, the partition sizes may be a maximum of 200 GB. If you have a drive that is larger than 200 GB in size, you will need to create multiple partitions with no single partition exceeding 200 GB in size. Once formatted, the drive will be recognized under the version of Mac OS 9.2.2 that comes with the Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) and later products.
If the drive is not formatted using Mac OS X 10.2 or later, the maximum volume size available is limited to approximately 128 GB.
    Support via the BootROM
The BootROM of Power Mac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors), Xserve, Power Mac G5, and any other model introduced after June 2002 can accommodate these larger drives.
For additional details on the volume and file size limitations under OS X, see:
Mac OS X: Mac OS Extended Format - Volume and File Limits
Mac OS X Server 10.0.3 and later: Maximum UFS Partition Size Is Less Than 1 TB
Note that the 2 conditions appear to be in the conjunctive, not disjunctive; i.e., both must be met.
My TiBook doesn't seem to fit the parameters required to recognize larger drives. It was introduced in April 2002, and is not a Power Mac with Mirrored Drive Doors, nor an XServe or Power Mac G5.
However, I bought a 160 GB external hard drive some years ago. Disk Utility recognized it as 160 GB when I connected it via Firewire 400, and successfully partitioned it into 34.44 GB and 114.35 GB volumes, totaling 148.79 GB. This is quite more than the 128 GB limitation that concerns us.
So I wonder: Is an easy test just connecting an external hard drive larger than 128 GB and seeing if the OS recognizes it?

  • Sun Blade 150 Hard Drive Support

    Hello,
We are upgrading our Sun Blade 150 server. I was keen on knowing if it would support two separate 80 Gb hard-drives which effectively increase its capacity to 160.
    Thanks,
    Vijay

    Absolutely.
Your ATA controller just does not happen to be 48-bit capable.
Thus you're going to be limited to a nominal 137GB maximum usable space on any one IDE disk.

  • Native SATA hard drive support for hp pavilion notebooks DV2000 , DV9000

    Hello,
decided to post a question on this hp forum instead of the hundreds of other tech forums out there in the hopes of recieving a valid knowledgeble response.  (Also since the question relates to Hp products lets give it  a try on here>>)
So here is the question I'm trying to get answer for.  Can a SATA hard drive from DV 2000 series notebook be used in a DV 9000 notebook series?  I have done some forum reading and apparently there is compatibility issues depending on chipset (Intel or Amd or ATI?)
My Dv2000 series had a fujitsu 250gb hard drive which ran Vista 64bit on an AMD/nvdia motherboard,
I want to use this in my DV 9233cl notebook which has an Intel/nvidia chipset motherboard.
When I insert the fujitsu 250gb into the dv9233cl the notebook powers on, does a read of hard drive for 10 mins or so (hdd LED lights up, goes dim while reading) then says : No OS found.
    I tried to do a fresh install using Vista CD; its doesn't recognize the drive.  I click option to load drivers for hard drive (yes I also got intel drivers for Intel SATA controllers from hp web site) the drivers load but still do not pick up the hard drive;
I want to know two things really..if at post the motherboard reads the drive or trys to does this means the hard drive itself is good/healthy?  If so , why does it not recognize by Vista Install disk or by the intel SATA drivers?
If anyone can accurately say what the problem is would be great.
    Thank you.

    Hello,
Thank you for responding and opening up the discussion with more information.
I refered to it as new in my post in reference to obtaining it recently after my older dv2913cl.
The dv9233cl is in fact old, however I installed a brand new intel/nvidia motherboard into it.
The system boots, bios has native sata support set to 'enabled'.  During post it recognises hdd device as it starts to click and spin and read.  After it will say ' no OS found'.   This to me seems normal as the hdd is not 'configured' to boot on the dv9233cl?
Also the systm boots and runs fine into mini Xp for diagnostics. So overall I know the dv9233cl is functioning.
However mini Xp does not recognise there is a hdd device.
Wanting to reformat or do a fresh install of Vista I boot from the Vista Install disk.   It does not pick up or recognise a hdd is present.  I install Intel SATA controller drivers which I obtained from Hp website (as suggested by expert forum members to those who have similar SATA  hdd not being recognised with intel motherboard)
Link for intel SATA drivers for XP and Vista
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=US&swItem=ob-542...
I used the SATA controllers which came up on the screen and even try going through each one ; however the SATA hdd device is not picked up.  So this is the main question and issue. Neither any DOS hdd utility , mini XP or Vista install disk recognise there is a hdd present.
Why is it not recognised and how to resolve.?
