A21p that locks up

My dependable old A21p is randomly locking up about 5-6 times a day. It can happen while it is just sitting there or while I'm using it. The screen stays on but the keyboard and mouse have no effect and the clock on the screen also freezes.
I'm running XP pro and the computer is on a docking station with an LCD monitor plugged in. I haven't added any software or hardware recently and have never seen the problem before about a week ago. Updates, of course, happen automatically so maybe something happened there. I've set the power settings to "always on" for everything and removed any screensaver software. I only have one anti-virus program running (symantics). Any ideas?

Absolutely, positively INCORRECT!
The A2x series has not been affected with any type of un-soldering issue when it comes to the graphics chip. Neither has T60/p.
What A2x units do suffer from is a BOD (Blink Of Death) which has no known connection to the graphics card.
What T60/p sometimes suffer from is VRAM corruption which has nothing to do with the BGA issues seen on T4x and R5x.

There is no solution other than having the device cleared by the former owner. If you are trying to activate an iPad or iPhone and it is asking for a previous owners Apple ID and password, you have encountered the Activation Lock. This is a security feature that prevents thieves from setting up and using a stolen or lost iPad or iPhone. You have no alternative. You must contact the previous owner to get permission to use the device. If you cannot contact the previous owner return the device to where you bought it and get a refund. You may be referring to the "Oleg Pliss" hack (not a virus), in which some people (mostly in Australia and New Zealand) have had their Apple IDs hacked and used to remotely lock their iOS devices. If that's what you read about, be sure that you are using a strong password on your Apple ID, and consider enabling two-factor authentication on your Apple ID to make it difficult or impossible for a hacker to take it away from you.
If you live in Australia or New Zealand, it may be worthwhile to turn off Find My iPad on your iPad, at least until the cause of the problem has been determined. Of course, that reduces the protections against theft. You'd be better off to just make sure you're keeping the iPad backed up, so you can restore it if it happens to get locked.

The Finder is just assigning the wrong kind and icon to what I presume are plist files. Often rebuilding the Launch Services will cure this, but sometimes Finder gets a strange bee in its bonnet about some particular combination of characteristics and what they mean, and it can't be dissuaded. Unless you are opening plist files, and get really annoyed when you double click one and Address Book launches and announces "wrong type of file" you can just ignore it. In my own ~/Library/Prefences folder plists are generally labeled correctly, probably because I have them assigned to open with Apple's own Property List Editor. But there are some other preferences that Finder has decided are something altogether different than what they are: WingNuts Prefs and Saved Games are both believed to be Eudora preferences; a whole batch of other prefs from a dozen differenct programs are described as TextWrangler preferences, and there's a another group thought to be Unix Executables. As long as the program they belong to isn't having a problem finding and writing to them, don't worry about it.

You could try changing the settings in System Preferences/Security & Privacy/General/Advanced/Require an Administator password to access locked preferences
But this will affect all Preference settings.

If you are sure that the battery isn't empty, then have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
