A30 not booting: missing file

My A30 laptop will not load windows because the following file is either missing or corrupt.
<window root>\system32\hal.dll.
It is not currently connected to the internet, which should rule out a virus, and it worked fine prior to recieving this message. (barring occasional overheating)
I have loaded the Toshiba system recovery disk, but am unsure as to how i can replace this individual file without wiping the entire system, or if the file i need is even on this disk (if not i assume i will need the windows XP disk?)
Any help would be much appreciated, cheers. MattPope

Hi Matthew,
Unfortunately, it will not be possible to replace your damaged/missing file from the Toshiba Recovery CDs. Your only option will be to reinstall your system in its entirety.
This will, of course, remove any of your own files/data/programmes, and will return your system to its 'ex-works' condition so you will then need to re-apply any Microsoft Updates, anti-virus definitions, etc.
It may be worthwhile partitioning your hard drive so that you can install your OS on the C:/ drive and then put your own data on the D:/ drive. This will make future recovery much easier.

  • Qosmio G30-161 does not boot - NTDLR' File is Missing

    Hi all,
I have a G30-161 twin hard drive (in Raid 1) that will not boot..
It just gives the message 'NTDLR file is missing' and is followed up with a prompt to restart the computer at which the same error will be displayed again.
I've been given this laptop by my son to fix (lucky me :( ! )
Things I've looked at so far:
    - Checked the BIOS to see if the drives are configured correctly - BIOS states both hard drives installed, online and in RAID 1
    - I had a Windows XP Install Disc to hand so tried to see if it would boot from a CD. It started on the CD ok but the Windows Recovery Console/Install process said it could not find any hard drives. Also found an Acronis True Image Boot Disc (uses linux I think), again the program started up fine but reported there were no Hard Drives installed.
    - So with the the no HD reports I took one out for a test. With drive 2 removed, on a boot attempt the system reports 'RAID 1 is DEGRADE' then follows with the 'NTDLR file is missing' . So this tells me the RAID SW is probably working and it knows a HD has been removed.
All the fixes I've read about on PC forums involve using the XP Recovery CD or some but this won't work as the system thinks there are no drives when it boots. We dont' have a Toshiba recovery disc for the machine.
Anyone seen the above problem, knows a fix?
Can I get hold of a G30-161 Recovery CD anywhere?
    Any help appreciated. ...
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • SubVI or controls not loaded - missing files from location misc.llb

When I try to load VI in Labview 2012, I get several errors for missing files:

    C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\NI ELVISmx\misc.llb\subGetDevProductType.vi

Why am I missing these required files?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The VI you're using sounds like it's using those subVIs and they're not in those locations. This can be because of a custom install where the path is not that one, or it could be a version change and those files were moved. Did you make this VI? Has it worked before? Did you install NI ELVISmx? That might be worth a shot since those are the folders that it's looking in. Just make sure the version you download in compatible until your verison of LabVIEW.

  • Mac Mini not booting - Missing Directory file

I cannot even get my Mac Mini (OS 10.8.3) to boot up - not even in safe mode.
I managed to video the verbose boot up screen as far as it went and the error is a Missing Directory Record, Macintosh HD needs to be repaired, Macintosh HD can't be repaired...
The only thing I can think of doig is taking it to a local Mac dealer and probably having to buy a new HD?
    Anyone got any other ideas?

    Hi Zlig,
Yes All backup to TM and a extra backup to a USB drive. I've disconnected everything and only reconnected power, monitor and keyboard and now when powering up I still get to the grey screen, Apple logo and progress bar but again crash after a couple of mintues.
I cannot seem to get the verbose safe mode working again either.
I'm not sure how connected this is but it did occur last night after looking at picture on an SD camera card from a friends camera.
As it's a Mac Mini I have no CD/DVD drive, no start up disc...so I can't run any diagnostic / repair apps.

  • Loaded 7.3-does not work-restored system-does not work-missing files?

I downloaded 7.3 and got a message that it could not upgrade the version of IPOD software found on cpu. Please uninstall and try again. Did that. Also removed all Itunes and Ipod software versions. Still got message. Decided to restore computer to before the 7.3 download. Now get error message that ITunes cannot run because files are missing. Doesn't say which ones. Any idea on how to restore old version?

My workflow is to basically backup my negative collection by scanning at the highest resolution possible and save them at full bit depth as Tiffs on offline storage. I then duplicate all the files as large JPGs and store them on my local machine. These are then all duplicated again and down sampled to 1024*768 to be synced with the iPad. After 2 1/2 years and a 16 page file documenting all the bugs, I finally got the small files to sync with an iPad 4. After all is said and done, it only took about 7GB to sync 50K Jpgs but did end up with a 20GB "Other" file that no one from Apple can explain. I have been seeing these "Other" files for a while and think they are some sort of memory corruption and the only way to get rid of it is to restore the ipad.
Bottom line, iTunes for Windows is terrible, very buggy, and unsupported by Apple. They can only help you trouble shoot restarting problems but there is no escalalation path for things that don't work. iTunes basically has a lot of trouble with samll number of large files and even a large number of small files.
I have been using Lighroom to convert the Tiffs to JPGs but ran into a problem that Adobe engineers didn't know about. Lightroom will only support a maximum of 512 mega pixels and won't load any files over this size. It appears it may load them as PSDs but not as Tiffs. Problem is Lightroom won't give any error message for files it won't load so there is no way to trouble shoot it.
What does work flawlessly is using Photoshop/Scripts/Image Processor.
In protest of Apples apathy I took every IOS device I ever purchased back to the Apple store and challenged them to either make them work or refund them. They gave a full refund for every device I erver purchased including $299 for the original touch which came out to about $3500. I even sent a letter to Tim Cook ([email protected]) but he didn't care either.

  • Files disappeared from library, "missing" files not really missing

I had a folder with 3 files in different formats for each image.  These were imported several days ago, grouped into stacks, captioned, tagged, etc. and synced to the files.  They continued to exist in the library some time afterward, but today when I opened lightroom all of the jpg versions of all of the images and all 3 formats of one image in particular had vanished from the library.  It did not claim that it could not find them on disk (and in fact the files *do* still exist on disk right where they should), they just didn't show up.  I was able to re-import all of the jpg images without trouble, but for the other two formats of the one missing image, importing one of them fails because it "already exists in the library," and the other one is willing to import but then doesn't show up in the folder or the recently imported files list.  When I try to synchronize the folder, it suggests that I import that file, but it never actually does.  Since importing the jpgs, it also suggests that I remove 53 "missing" files, the number of jpgs imported.  When I view the missing files in the library, it shows only 2 of the jpgs, one of which belongs with the files that will not import and neither of which is actually missing--they can both be synchronized just fine by clicking the little synchronize icon on the actual photo.
Does anyone know what's going on here and how I might be able to get the files that won't import back into the library?  And how to be sure that files won't just go away on their own again?
Edit: to be clear, missing versions of files were definitely not stacked with the other ones and the "don't import duplicates" box was not checked when re-importing the ones that won't re-import

I managed to get the photos that wouldn't import back in by deleting them directly out of the database and then reimporting them into lightroom. I'm a little concerned that they disappeared in the library view in the first place, though.  Does this sort of thing happen often, and under what circumstances?  I'm still in the free trial period and was very close to buying the program, but now I'm not so sure.  If I'm using an application to manage my photos, I want to know that it's actually managing all of the photos I put into it and not randomly forgetting about them.
I'm still having the not-really-missing files problem, though.  I think it may actually be because they got associated as "sidecar" files somehow and are now in there twice, once as the sidecar file and another time as a separate jpg image.  I'm not really sure why only one of them shows up in the missing images view, I think it might be because I edited that one so it's in a slightly different state from the others?  If there are any tips on how to resolve that state, I'm all ears, I'd like it to stop telling me I have 53 missing files when I don't.

  • Missing Files. LR 1.1.

All of a sudden I've got 590 'Missing Files'.
    All from the same folder.
None are marked with a '?'.
    No folders are 'Red Flagged'.
When using 'Show in Explorer', the files are shown to exist, in the relevant folder, exactly as they should. So they're not realy "Missing".
No, I've not done any mass deletions or any other form of 'Housekeeping', either from within LR or via external programs.
'Relaunch and Optimize' has no effect on the situation.
I'm more than happy to believe that it's my own 'finger trouble', but I need to understand the how or why.
    Any ideas?
And this just as I'd decided that LR realy was to be trusted enough to be my main workflow tool.

LR does get confused at times about where everything is. Often, the problem you indicate occurs for no apparent reason. I have had it happen several times. When it does, I can still work on the files. In fact just clicking on the "?" will cause it to disappear. The number of missing files will change every time I reboot. The most maddening part is that you cannot tell if any are actually missing until you have clicked on each file.
This problem has been brought to Adobe's attention and they have acknowledged that it is a bug. Of course, not all problems with missing files should be attributed to this bug.
As for trusting it? That's up to you. I use it for a small part of my archive (20 K files)as a test bed for possible use with all my files, and I have not actually had it 'destroy' any files over the last year. But I have wasted many hours dealing with its bugs and glitches (not just missing files). However, in case it does go completely south, I backup after every daily editing session and all my files have offsite dual backups. I also save metadata to sidecars and jpeg and tif files. And the same files are also in the DAM that I use for my main archive. So, what I trust is my ability to survive anything LR, or any other application (or my computer), might do to my work.

  • Satellite Pro 4340DVD will not boot up - pci.sys missing or corrupt

    I bought a Toshiba Laptop Satellite Pro 4340DVD Model # PS434C-3N152, Serial # Y0018185J, off E-Bay.
The original operating system, Win 98SE has been upgraded to Win XP Pro. No disks came with the laptop.
The laptop crashed yesterday while I was online and will not boot-up.
    _Error message reads:_
+The following file is missing or corrupt: System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys.+
Any suggestions on how to rectify this problem will be deeply appreciated. I would very much like to have a users manual for this unit but haven't been able to find one.
    Thanks!

Turns out that the dirty dawg was Anti-Virus 2009 that caused the problem. Managed to get laptop to boot up in "safe mode," found the dirty dawg, deleted it, and the laptop booted right back up.

  • Error on boot: "Can not find script file "C:\ProgramData\Lenovo-20841.vbs".

Recently I'm getting an error dialog box on my T530 when I boot it into my OEM installation of Windows 8.  The window title bar is "Windows Script Host", and the error message is:
Error on boot: "Can not find script file "C:\ProgramData\Lenovo-20841.vbs".
I pulled up an old backup, and I do have that file, along with a number of other ones that are missing from that directory.  I'm attaching a screenshot of the files that are missing.  Not sure why they would have been deleted (I know I didn't do it manually).  Should I just restore the file?  What about the other ones?
    Thanks very much.

I am getting a different VBS script error than the one listed above.
Does anyone know how I can get this file?  or recreate it?
I get a similar message saying that it can't find the file c:\programdata\Lenovo-11472.vbs
Also, my wireless just randomly resets - sometimes very few minutes - after I've been using the system for a while.  It's brand new and I can't figure out what's going on.  Could this be the issue?
When I restart, it stays stable for a while and then starts acting up again.
    Thanks for your help!

  • Corrupt/missing file - xp won't boot up

    Hello,
I am unable to boot into the bootcamped Win XP. I get the message <<Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
    C:\windows\system32\config\system.
You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup CD-Rom. Select "r" at the first screen to start repair.>>
It won't boot into Safe Mode either, or into Last Known Configuration, or into any of the other F8 options. It won't boot up with the original Windows CD either (valid, non-OEM). I want to run Windows Recovery Console to attempt a repair.
Should I try through Bootcamp Assistant? If the Windoows CD is bad or unreadable in some way (which is what I suspect, judging by the scratch marks), then Bootcamp Assistant is not going to make a difference. Is there any other way to to repair Windows or run chkdsk?

Having got no reply to my post, I decided to do some tweaking of Windows myself, knowing that if I didn't succeed, I'd have to reinstall XP, which I was resigned to do in any case as a last resort. So I copied the missing/corrupt file in question from Windows\repair directory and using Paragon NTFS pasted it into the windows\system32\config directory. Bootcamp Windows now booted up, all seemed to be working fine, and I reinstalled the Apple drivers. After a restart, however, I found that neither the trackpad nor the keyboard were working (both of which were working before the restart). Restarted again, and got a hal.dll missing/corrupt error! Restarted again in safe mode, no hal.dll error, but also no keyboard/trackpad functionality. The only saving grace is that Windows now boots up properly in Parallels with no errors and everything working.
From whatever little I've researched on this, it seems Parallels can screw up the boot.ini file. Apparently it makes changes to boot.ini which are fine for running Windows in Parallels, but not in Bootcamp. Well, whatever...... I think I'll just have to do a reinstall, and hope I have better luck than you.

  • Missing files on HFS drive in Boot Camp 3.0

I have an external drive formatted with HFS. When I look at the contents of that drive while in Windows XP in Boot Camp 3.0 I noticed that some of the files are missing. If I log back into Snow Leopard the files are still there. I have tried deleting the "missing" file and copying it back, but the same problem persists or strangely another file in the same folder will go missing when I look for it in Boot Camp. Is there a bug in the HFS driver for Boot Camp or is there some sort of weird behavior of HFS I don't know about? This isn't a one off thing either, this is happening in multiple folders on the drive.
    Thanks.

I have begun to experience a similar issue on an external hard drive. The drive has 3 partitions (2 Journaled, 1 NTFS). I access the HFS/journaled partitions from a Boot Camp installation (slipstreamed Windows XP SP2).
Certain files do not appear in the Windows Explorer, though they do appear in Mac OS Finder. Same as <ditogi>, I copied and replaced, renamed and so on - the content is apparently unharmed. I also adjusted the permissions. Nothing seems to work. Additionally, folders also seem to be missing now.
The only recent changes to the system were:
    Mac OS: Firefox 3.6.2
Windows: GlovePIE; PPJoy; Tamamy Ikesu's DUALSHOCK3 HID Minidriver.
Any pointers as to whether this is a Mac OS or Windows issue - mass storage driver, security, or services related would be helpful.

I would like to be able to edit MP4s in CS5.  I can not open the file. What am I missing?

I am running InDesign CS5.5 and trying to open an In Design File but getting an error message. " Cannot open the file "PDavidLCover.indd". Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file me be open in another application."Please help I really need to get this file open.

Since you've shown us the folder contents it's a good bet it isn't in use (no lock file). And it doesn't look like the file is mis-named as there doesn't seem to be anything else there that would be the .indd file (but just in case, open it in TextEdit and paste the first few lines here so we can see what the file header says), so the most likely case is the file is damaged. Is that on a removable device of some sort?
You can try the tool at Repair corrupt InDesign Adobe files on Mac OS X  or send me a link to the file by private message and I'll try the recovery tool I have for Windows.
