A305-S6898 Problems!!??

I have had this laptop since May or so and i've had a few problems with it, so far. The most major being random shut downs in the middle of doing homework or checking emails. Lately I have run into the issue of the laptop freezing. Everytime it has done so, I am doing something different, either editing images or checking email, etc. I can't access the start menu to shut down or use ctrl+alt+del, either. I have to manually shut it down using the power button which then leads to the PC doing a system check that takes 5 minutes or more to complete. I don't have music, images or pretty much anything saved on here - it all goes to my external hard drive so the PC isn't full of junk and I only have an image editing program installed as well as a messenger program, which I never run. It doesn't feel as it is over-heating or anything so I don't know what would be causing this random freeze. It only runs about a half hour sometimes, when this happens. I plan on sending it out to support to get it checked but i'd like to know what anyones thoughts on this could be. It's making me think my laptop is a piece of junk and I shoulda gone with the HP...

The recovery disks are part of the Recovery Partition.  There is a program on the system that creates them for you, but you have to be in the ORIGINAL operating system in it's from the factory state to access it.  When you installed Windows 7 did you do an in place upgrade over the existing Vista install or did you wipe the drive first then install Win7?  If you did the in place upgrade there's still a chance that you can create the Recovery Disks.  Go to Start - All Programs - Toshiba - Recovery - Recovery Disk Creator to create the disks.  You will need 3 or 4 blank DVD disks.  You might also be able to invoke the recovery system by following the instructions starting on page 60 of the User's Guide found on your hard drive in PDF format.  If you can't find it on your hard drive you can download it from the support site.
Click on the Product Support link at the top of this page
Click on the BLUE TEXT LINK that states Show All Models
Enter in your models information
Click on the User's Guide Tab.
If you wiped the drive you'll need to contact Toshiba to order replacement disks as outlined in this post.
Please take note that at the present time neither ATI nor Toshiba has a properly functioning 64bit Windows 7 Driver for the ATI graphics chip found on your system.  The Win 7 32bit doesn't appear to be having that problem though.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • A305 S6898 power light comes on, computer fails to start up.

    A305 s6898. Windows vista.
Over the past several months, I've gone to turn on my computer, and found that the hard drive would simply refuse to spin. I press the power button, and power comes on. The power button glows, and the indicator at the front of the computer is lit to show that the computer has power.
However, the screen does not light up, and the laptop will not boot. The tiny cylindrical indicator that typically flashes when the computer is working properly initially begins to glow, and then stops. It does not start again, and apart from the power indicator being lit, the computer is, for all intents and purposes, off.
The first few times this happened, I ignored it because the computer will eventually turn on after several hard shut shutdowns. The number of attempts has varied greatly depending on the occasion.
It has been happening more and more often.
Due to the fact that this issue is intermittent, and is not accompanied by an errors. I am convinced that this is due to a physical problem within the computer. Possibly a loose connection or an old wire? I'd like to know if it's fixable and, if it is, how to safely go about fixing it.
    thanks in advance

    Dear Erico
    Thanks for quick response.
    I have tried both your proposed options;
Firstly disconnected HD (both power cable and SATA cable) no difference,
    Cleared CMOS, no difference.
Checked again seating of memory found OK.
Removed an additional Network Card from the PCI connector, no difference.
Removed connections to CD Rom, (both power cable and SATA) no difference.
Removed for sake of completeness battery, no difference.
The start up sequence apperas quite unusual:
Upon switching on by the power button, the powerlight switches on (green) and the HD light switches on for a short moment (Only while pushing the power button)
Ventilators start running on normal speed.
Access to CD rom (trying to read from CD rom) (also with a start-up disk the computer will not boot)
HD appears to rev up (I only hear the sound of revving up, however no read or write indication (HD led stays dark))
Computer shuts down automatic after about 5 seconds. (ventilators stop, power led switches off)
Computer powers up again automatically after a delay of about 2 seconds.
Same starting up sequence as above.
After about ten seconds ventilators of powersupply and chassis speeds up to maximum revs.
I am not sure if the ventilator of the processor also revs up, I tried same with the processor ventilator disconnected, no difference.
This continuous untill shutting down by hand (pressing power button 4 seconds)
While pressing the powerbutton the HD led lights up.
(power led lights continuously during start up, no POST warnings, no beeps, no cursor on screen)
It appears to me that the computer thinks that it is overheated and accordingly wants to cool down the chassis by additional ventilation. However I anticipated that only the processor temperature is monitored.
The problem first occurred after switching on at 08:00 in the morning after being switched off the day before at 17:00.
    your further suggestions are appreciated.
    Regards

  • A305-S6898

I just got this laptop a few months ago. Around last October/November, I think. I've been having a lot of problems. The webcam doesn't work properly. Every time I turn it on, the whole system freezes. Also, whenever I plug in my USB or Ipod, it either freezes or doesn't recognize the device. Its really annoying. I don't know what to do. I've tried a number of things but nothing works.
    Help please?

  • A305-S6898 Troubleshoot

I have had this Toshiba Satellite A305-S6898, PSAGCU-05601S, for a few years, and about 8 months ago or so, I started having issues.  Up to this point, I was running Windows 7 Ultimate for a few years.  The biggest issue that I have been having is that whenever I download, either from Internet Explorer or Firefox, it tells me that the download was interupted, and when it does complete, it tells me that the download is corrupt.  I replaced the HDD back in January, and still have had this issue.  I have done the MEMTEST a few times, and it comes back with nothing is wrong.  I found a free motherboard and processor tester, cannot remember the one that I used, and they say that nothing is wrong.  I want to say that I have a motherboard or processor, but want to make sure that they are bad.  I love this laptop, and do not want to replace it.  I want to run some thorough diagnostic software on the laptop before I take it someplace to get repaired.  Any suggestions?

you may want to run a scan using another third party anti-maleware program or two just to ensure it is not maleware.  I like to run malewarebytes every other week but there are others that are available on the internet and free.

  • Satellite A305-S6898 labelflash problem

I purchased this Satellite laptop in October 2008 at Best Buy, one main reason for its purchase was due to its labelflash support.  I have purchased the CDs specifically for labelflash/lightscribe but in the program it does not give me any other option to choose other than MS default printer (or something of that sort) HELP! Does it have the program in it or not? Am I doing something wrong?
I have tried other forums and used their methods I even installed NERO essentials 7 but still I can't get that darn thing to work.

As informed by Techman, and I can confirm ULEAD is installed for disc burn label aspect.  Read this Article as guidance;  Creating Labelflash disc labels   Also, there could have been a FujiFilm Labelflash disc enclosed as a sample to use? Remember you have to flip the disk onto the opposite side when you engage the ULEAD program  The image dye layer is located 0.6 millimeters below the surface of the label side.  Remember to use special disc for your tasking.

  • Toshiba a305-s6916 problem with touchpad burning my hands

This is a great laptop but the touchpad overheats alot. my hands feel burned and red after about 2 hours of use. Is there anyway to deal with this issue? all thru the product reviews for this model you see this being mentioned. so i think theres a defect with this model Kinda a health hazard i think.
Has anyone from bestbuy contacted toshiba about this matter?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

There's a few things that could be. One of the largest possibilities is a faulty heat sink since the problem seems to arise after prolonged use.
If you've had the computer for under a year or have a service plan from Best Buy, you can take it up to the Geek Squad Precinct and they can check it in for Diagnostics to replicate the problem.
If there is a problem, they can have the computer sent to either the manufacturer or their service centers to remedy.

  • Satellite A305-S6898 - half black screen on the start-up

I purchased this laptop back in the beginning of March and had to return it to store due to an issue at start-up when half the screen would turn black on the Windows log in screen. They ordered me a new one that I received about 3 weeks ago and I used it for about a week before I got the same issue of half black screen with the start-up.
Now it has been running really slow and about an hour ago I had it freeze up on me and my entire screen turn into a bunch of colorful lines.
I had to restart into safe-mode and run a virus scan just to make sure that wasn't my problem.
I don't download anything on this computer other than the basic messengers and photo editing programs.
I have an HP MP7170N desktop which i use to download everything that seems to run quicker than the laptop and I use photo programs, downloads torrents and store most of my music and photos on that one and it only has 1GB of memory compared to this ones 4GB.
    What is the deal?
Anyone have any ideas as to what I can do.
I can't really return it to the store because they only give a 14-day grace period for returns.

    > I got the same issue of half black screen with the start-up.
    > Now it has been running really slow and about an hour ago I had it freeze up on me and my entire screen turn into a bunch of colorful lines.
Looks not good for me it sounds a little bit like graphic issue.
Before you would contact a professional Toshiba authorized service provider it would be interesting to know if you would notice some improvements after recovery procedure and BIOS update.
I believe you didnt get an recovery disk because you can create it using the preinstalled Toshiba software check your user manual how to create recovery disk
So after new installation check the notebook usability and if similar issues still persists.
If nothing will be changed its strongly recommended to contact an ASP

  • Satellite A305-S6898 Randomly shuts off

My computer seems to  be working when I turn it on, but randomly shuts off after a few minutes. Then it will not stay on for as long as it did when I power it up again. I think it might be overheating and then powering off. Any suggestions or ideas?

When any unit immediately shuts down, even in the middle of a tasking, it is a sign, most often of OVERHEATING, then hardware failure.  Check the fan and exhaust port and remove any debris. Remove the battery for now and restart the unit to see if concern alleviated.  Check the power adapter for signs of worn/twisted wires.  Check the unit plug connector to ensure a good fir for the power adapter.

  • Toshiba A305 Series- What's the Difference?

Hello everyone, I am looking for a new computer and have done a lot of research.  I have narrowed down my choices to my top 3 or so, and the Toshiba A305 computers look great.  They have 4GB RAM, 320 GB hard drive, Centrino, and other features.  Pretty nice looking for the price.
Here's my question.  Best Buy sells two versions of this limited edition A305 computer.  There is the A305-S6916 for $779 and the A305-S6898 for $649.  What's the difference between these two computers.
I have looked at all the specs and they seem to be nearly identical except the more expensive one has a slightly better graphics card.  Is that the only difference between the two models?
If that is the only difference...and it seems to be a small one....then I think I will get the one that is over $100 cheaper since it seems practically identical.  I want to be sure I'm not missing anything though.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

They look the same but the first one has a Intel® Centrino® processor technology with Intel® Core™2 Duo mobile processor T6400 and the second one has a t5800.
As far as videocards in a laptop. You can never have enough video processing power. You will not be able to upgrade the video so you are stuck with what you buy. Six months down the road you might need that better videocard to run an application and you don't get it now then you will have to buy a whole new laptop.

Your model may or may not have these, Marie. See the section Hard Drive Recovery Utilities, which begins on p. 60 of the User's Guide.
       Satellite A300 Series User’s Guide
Since your spec does not show a utility to burn recovery discs, my guess is that they came with the computer. In that case, If you don't have them you'll need to order them.
