A31 Hard Drive Recommendation

Hi Gang,
I am considering upgrading the HD on my A31, 2652-C4U running XP Pro. Does anyone have a general recommendation on a suitable unit and is there a maximum size limitation issue because of bios.

There's no BIOS cap on A31/p, as long as you're running XP SP2 or newer, everything will work fine...
The largest PATA drive currently availoable is WD 320GB/5400rpm:

External Hard Drive Recommendation Needed

I have an iBook G4, with probably a little less than 20 GB of material that I want to back-up onto an external hard drive. Recently, I purchased a "Fuji 30GB External Hard Drive," but while attempting to transfer my material to it, I received very many times the following message:
"You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long or contain invalid characters for the destination. Do you want to skip copying these items and continue copying the other items?"
As it turns out, about 20% of the files on my iBook are un-transferable to the "Fuji 30GB" because of the length or composition of their filenames. I was hoping that someone could recommend to me a brand of external drive, in the 20GB-30GB range, with which I would not have this problem. Thanks for reading.

Personally, I like Western Digital and Seagate drives. And I would recommend looking for a larger drive, as prices have really come down and you can often find sales. There is almost no such thing as a hard drive that is too big. I believe the extra space will help with the bigger files because it will improve the chances of larger blocks of space to receive the data.
Newegg and OWC are good sources. Also look at office supply stores for sales.

External Firewire Hard Drive Recommendation

Hi.
Can anyone recommend a reliable brand for external hard drives? I'm not the most tech savvy person and have read various threads where people have had problems w/ compatibility.
I would need this to transfer work files, mp3s and images files, etc.
I would like to buy one relatively soon but would like some advice first.

I will always recommend the Mercury Elite Pro USB/FW drives from OWC, but as long as you get a drive or enclosure with the Oxford 911 chipset, that would be an excellent choice. Avoid the more common and cheaper Prolific chipset as it is not as reliable and cannot always boot all Macs.
You can either get a pre-assembled drive, or "roll your own" by buying an enclosure and adding your own IDE drive to it. It is super easy to do, but there is no shame in buying one that is all ready to go.
I like having both FW and USB for the flexibility of using either interface. I prefer to use FireWire, but not all computers have it, so you might have to resort to using the slower USB. It is nice to have that option.

External Hard Drive Recommendations?

Hello - Newbie here.
I am in the market for an External Hard Drive for my MBP 2.33. I can't decide between a 500GB Maxtor One Touch III with FW-800/400; and the 500GB Western Digital MyBook with FW-800/400.
I am going to use this to hold my digital video footage. So I will be transfering the video straight from my sony dv camera to the hard drive where I will work with the footage with IMovie. I already have a FW-400 wire for the camcorder-computer connection...that leaves me with a USB and the FW-800 port available.
Has anyone had issues with WD or Maxtor and their Mac? Suggest another model??

Maxtor are owned by Seagate. They used to be something of a budget brand.
Just so that it helps, do bear in mind that an external drive is just an external enclosure with an internal drive or drives in it.
Reliability depends on the combination between the enclosure and the drive - a good drive can still fail as a result of the enclosure doing the wrong thing at the wrong time. A drive can also fail simply because they are not perfect, so you could easily buy an expensive external drive which has a Western Digital Drive in it which will work fine.
Personally I'd go with an OWC enclosure and put a Seagate drive in it. Hang on, I did and opinions will vary. IVMichael recently recommended Western digital Drives (I think - sorry if I'm wrong) - but I think the Drives rather than their My Book solution.

USB powered hard drive recommendation?

I am having trouble finding an external removable hard drive that can be powered through my USB.
I bought one a Western Digital 120g portable drive - it won't even show up or eject unless it's plugged in with a cord I swiped from another device.
After reading the posts, it seems this is a problem. Any recommendations for brands/sizes that don't require a power source?

I would be willing to use whatever one works - I am not as savvy on my machine as I once was so I appreciate ANY pointers.
I am trying to keep some photos/video on an external, portable, self-powered hard drive. I don't need to boot it up, just access it as additional storage.
I do have a firewire port. I didn't know if that would have difficulty powering a device the same way my USB port is limited in powering - so any tips for an external, portable hard drive that is powered through the laptop, either via USB or Firewire, would be appreciated.
Let me know if I'm asking the wrong question or need to go a different direction.

The Glyph firewire drives are great. They use Seagate drives instead of Maxtor. Quieter and much more reliable.

Replacing hard drive recommendations

Hi, I have a Powermac G5 that have (2) 250 GB drives, and I am out of space. I wanted to know if there is a limit to the size of the HDD I can get to replace these? These have IDE hard drives, correct?
Also, I am thinking of getting an external FW drive so I can back up my files. Recommended program for that?

Tom... you filled up BOTH 250's?!?! That's nutz... you should have noticed a nice drop in performance when you filled up the boot disk past 60-70-80%?!?!
I have been debating on doing an upgrade that would involve a FASTER drive, not necessarily bigger. I have the original 160 and put in a 300 later.
I think the question is... what are you filling them up with? Start burning some DVDs of the files you have and clear them up or go through them and see what you really need!! I have done that several times... mine gets filled up with burned DVDs so I make the DVD and then either delete the video_ts files or copy them to my external storage drive <--- that is a GOOD option... get externals to back everything up or store your files. Keep the files you edit alot on the installed drives and then move the rest over...

Hard drive recommendation

I have a 27' iMac (Late 2009) 2.8 Ghz i7 running Lion 10.7.4 with 1 TB hard drive.
I am running out of hard drive space mostly because of movies and music I have on iTunes. I am wanting to put all my iTunes media on an external hard drive to free up space. I also have an Apple TV gen 3 (square hockey puck) which I stream my movies and music to my TV.
Could anyone recommend an external hard drive to purchase that will properly work with Lion, eventually Mountain Lion, to store store my iTunes on and will still work with the Apple TV.

Buy a good hard drive or two plus an enclosure to put them into. If you want to provide for growth buy four drives all the same plus a 4 drive enclosure that supports RAID setups. Visit OWC for some possibilities.
Do not buy so-called "green" drives like the Western Digital Blue series. My personal preferences would be for Seagate or Samsung for large capacity drives.
You should look for an enclosure that can support both striped and mirrored RAID arrays. That way you can create two striped arrays for storage space, then mirror the two striped arrays for redundancy/backup.

External hard drive recommendations for OSX 10.4.7 and Windows XP

I just purchased an iMac20. I used bootcamp and have Windows XP running on a partition. I want to purchase an external hard drive for backup. Recommendations for an easy to use device that will allow backup of both operating systems without too much confusion. Thanks.

If you have 250GB drive, look for FW400 w/ 320GB.

Hard drive recommendations needed

160Gb Hard drive is totally shot and doesn't even mount correctly even with numerous attempts to fix.
Want to buy a new hard drive for it. Any recommendations for an internal hard drive? Doesn't need to be any larger, but I do want it to be a reliable brand that will last, and works with the computer.
This will be actually my second replacement of a hard drive, as the original one was destroyed as well. So my track record is every 2 years which seems ridiculous - never have had that problem before.
FYI- replacement of the first one, that now is a paper weight, is a seagate. never heard of them but must not be that good.

I'd go with WD, I have a dozen or so. I usually replace and use 2 yr old drives for backup and redundancy.
Most drives suffer from software corruption so I use Disk Warrior and run checks to prevent problems.
If you want quality, enterprise drives have a longer burn-in.
My choice would be 640GB Caviar Black from WD - just use half the drive, less than %89. Or Caviar Blue $69. My experience iwth WD 10K Raptor is I'd still be using the 36GB model from 5-1/2 yrs ago.
If you run Windows on your Mac Pro, run Seatools or WD Diagnostics. Most people think Seagate is reliable and has had good warranty. Their Cheetah was, I was never a fan on ATA or SATA model though.

Bought retina Mbp yesterday couldn't afford biggest hard drive, recommendations for future external drive?

I bought a retina Mbp yesterday. I bought the 8 RAM. It is the middle model. I couldn't afford the top model with more RAM and bigger hard drive. I have been told that in the future, I will probably need an external hard drive. Any recommendations on external hard drives?

If you wanna save some money, go to an internet retailer/local computer store and buy an external enclosure. Then after that, buy a notebook/desktop hard drive (whatever fits, 3.5in = desktop, 2.5in= notebook). I reccomend getting a hard drive over 500gb, with 7200rpm, sata 6gbs (if desktop HDD) and at least 8mb cache. If your Mac supports it, do RAID 1, which basically sets the opposite disk as a backup. You can also buy an SSD, which is much more expensive, but up to 3x faster than a HDD. You can buy them at the same store and can format the drive to your liking. They usually come in 2.5 inch, are extremely light, have a large data cache, and are the future of memory storage.
Also, while you are over there buy 1600mhz 8gb memory. Get the single stick and replace only 1 of the already installed sticks. I personally think 12gb is enough, but if you want more, buy another stick of the same RAM.

External Firewire Hard Drive Recommendations for novice

I would like to buy a external hard drive so that I can create a bootable clone, back up files and store pictures on. I am intimidated by reading the threads here on the various problems. Could some suggest "Hard Drives 101" or a simple to use hard drive for me?

You cannot go wrong with an external FireWire drive from Other World Computing. I recommend something in the Mercury Elite line, as these are known to work well with Macs. These come in different configuations (e.g. FW 800, FW 400, USB 2.0, and combinations thereof). Unless you have a FW 800 port on your Mac, there is no reason to get this option. FW 400 and USB 2.0 should suffice. I recommend buying a drive with at least as large as your Mac's hard disk, though you may with for more space (e.g. to make a bootable clone, and have room left over for other back ups).
There are other decent manufacturers, as well. I have read some good things about LaCie in these discussion forums, so you may wish to shop around.

Replacement Hard drive recommendations for iMac G5

I need to replace my hard drive on my old iMac computer and I wanted to know if anybody has a recommendation for an inexpensive replacement unit. I don't need too much memory space, probably anywhere from 500 G to 1 T would be plenty

External Hard Drive Recommendation for iMac 24

I'm a Mac Newbie; 25 plus years using HP's. I'm needing advise on best external HD for Time Machine and media storage. I currently have a MacBook 13" and an iMac 24 (3.06 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 1.0 TB Internal Hard Drive). I've noticed a lot of positive comments about OWC external drives, especially the Mercury Elite Series. Is there a particular model or size in that series that would make sense based on my current equipment? Also, just curious, there doesn't appear to be many recommendations for Apple Time Machine units; why not? Thanks in advance for your time into my query.

I'm very happy with my OWC Mercury Elite Pro. How large a unit you get it mostly a matter of your budget and how much data you want/need to back up. A 1TB external drive would probably do most people quite nicely for a long time, but if you're going to be accumulating a lot of video material, that will fill up space fast, so you might need a larger drive or RAID. OWC has RAID units up to 4TB.

Do you mean Apple's Time Capsule? If so, many people are quite happy with it, but since it's more than just an external hard drive, you won't see it mentioned very often when someone asks for a recommendation for an external drive. If you need to share a drive between more than one system, and particularly if you're also in the market for a wireless base station, a Time Capsule might be just the thing for you. If all you need is an external drive for a single computer, a Time Capsule would be overkill.
