A50 DVD-RAM drive problem

Hi,
when I try to burn into 8x DVD-R, Nero tells it can burn only at 2x. It should normally 4x.
The drive is Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-820S, FW version 1.0
I think the firmware update should solve this problem, but I cannot find it anywhere.
Adrian

Hi Ado,
Did you checked any other DVD-Rs for writing? There could also be a problem with the medium (meantime problem of every DVD Writer manufacturer).
Bye Rudi

  • T60 HDD res. partition, USB ports and DVD-RAM drive no longer recognizing data/media!

I have a base installation of the IBM T60.. I made no modifications to the setup or configuration of how the HDD is structured nor have I downloaded and installed any strange drivers... only automatically downloaded drivers from Microsoft update and manually downloaded driver updates from the Lenovo website.
One day everything was working fine.  Next day, my USB devices, reserved partition (can't remember what this is called) and the DVD-RAM drive stopped working but power was still getting to these devices.
My DVD-RAM drive is seen as a DVD-RAM on first bootup.  When I insert a CD or DVD media in the drive, the Explorer tree changes DVD-RAM to CD-ROM in the Explorer (really strange).  It behaves like there is no media in the drive.  Cannot boot with that drive either.
In addition, I have external USB HDD and Flash drives as well.  None of them work on this T60 anymore.
When I plug in an external USB HDD or Flash drive, I get "not formatted" error message and a prompt to format my drives?!
I tested these USB external drives on a desktop machine and verified that they are working 100% fine.  So the problem has something to do with my IBM/Lenovo T60.
It almost seems like something broke on the motherboard perhaps?  I downloaded and installed the latest BIOS updates as well to no avail.  Please help.  Thanks in advance for your time and consideration of this issue.

  • DVD-RAM drive from G4 AGP in the MacPro?

Just bought a new MacPro. I would like to move my DVD-RAM drive from my trusty old Sawtooth to the MacPro. I have a lot of old Type I cartridges with archived data on them that I would like to keep using, but on the new machine, since my husband is wanting me to give him the G4. The DVD_RAM Type1 cartridges are like "monster" ZIP disks and really convenient and dependable for backups.
An Apple Tech Support rep said it would "probably" work on the MacPro, but that I should post the question on the Forums as well, to see what others had to say. Any takers?
Also, if there is a new drive I could purchase that would accommodate the Type I cartridges and technology, I'd be interested in that information. I did research on these kinds of drives for my G4 some months ago, but found it hard to determine if there was a new "Superdrive" style drive with this capability.

I had to look up PATA and found info at http://www.directron.com/patasata.html to be very informative.
I know that my hard drives use a connector that looks like the parallel connectors in these photos. I'm not sure about the optical drives, because I've never had a reason to take them out or change them until now. I'll have to look inside and see.
They do talk in this article about the bulk of PATA connectors being more significant than the new serial ATA connectors. Considering the comments shared by "the hatter" that could be a problem. I'll check this out in the next couple of days and see is any hindrances regarding space come to light.
I'd still like to know if there is a new optical drive out there somewhere that could provide a DVD-RAM (Type I cartridge and newer formats) option for the MacPro. I hope someone can share some knowledge about that.
Thanks for your comments Ned and hatter.

  • Qosmio G30-175: DVD-RAM Drive thinks its a CD drive

    Hello people, me again.
My 2 week old Qosmio G30 - 175 has a DVD-RAM drive that now appears in My Computer as a CD-Drive. Consequently (I think) it won't auto play DVD's. I can play them manually through Media Centre or WMP but no option appears in the drive's properties for auto playing DVD's.
Can anybody tell me why this has happened? It used to show up as a DVD-RAM drive. The only thing I have done is to install Nero Premium. Would that have anything to do with it?
    Many thanks.

Joao, I have tried uninstalling the drive and letting Windows re-detect it but still the problem persists. Thanks anyway for the suggestion.
Gipsyman, I will investigate further what other burning software is installed and remove it and see if it helps. Thanks.
Sorry about the delay but I have been working away all week.
BTW the drive won't autoplay CD's now either. Whenever I put a CD or DVD into the drive Windows brings up the normal Explorer window and just displays the contents as folders. Right-clicking and selecting Autoplay I get the options for CD choice only (ie play with Media Centre etc.) but the "always perform this action" check box is greyed out!
I have been in touch with Toshiba support and they are still looking into it.
My system clock loses time too, whether or not it is connected to a time server. :-( Thanks...

  • Using DVD-RAM drive

I have tried using my dvd-ram drive many times. The problem is i can't find a dvd-ram disc that actually works. It just spits out the dvd. im using a 450 sawtooth with dvd-ram drive. This is the original drive from 5 years ago before there was dvd-burners. I have never been able to figure out how to use the dvd-ram. Do i need a certain kind of disc or some program to run it, or is it just drag and drop like zip disks. My hard drive is finally full and i really need to make some space and some backups.

You need special discs for a DVD-RAM drive, DVD-/+ discs will not work
If you have the older DVD-RAM drive it can only use discs that are 2.6 GB per side. A single-sided 2.6 GB disk will work or a double-sided 5.2 GB disk will work. The discs can be loose (I have a few single-sided like this) or in a cartridge (ALL of my 5.2 GB ones are like this).
The newer DVD-RAM drives use single-sided 4.7 GB discs and 9.4 GB double-sided discs.
Once you have the correct disc, it can be formatted and used just like a regular hard drive. DVD-RAM is fairly slow though.
These discs are getting tougher and tougher to purchase. You might be better off investing in a new larger hard drive or a current DVD-/+ drive to use for backup purposes.

  • Powerbook G4 12" 867mhz with dvd/cd drive problems - please help!

    Hello all,
Just realized this thread should have been in this section. I put it in the using your powerbook section. Sorry for the double post. I just wanted it to be in the right section.
I have just inherited a powerbook g4 from a family member who is upgrading to a new machine. It has dvd/cd drive problems. I'm totally new to OSX and a notebook machine and need some assistance. I've been briefly scanning the forums here and noticed problems with these drives on the model computer. Is there a way to fix this with an install of older software? Here is the problem, if I insert a cd into the super drive it mounts on the desktop, and itunes will play it but it skips and sounds very distorted. I haven't tried a dvd but was told it doesn't even see the dvds on the desktop. Here are the know specs on the machine:
    867mhz
    640 mb ram
    mac os x 10.5.1
    boot rom version 4.5.5f4
the burner info: matshita dvd r uj-015
    firmware version: docb
    Thanks in advance!

    Good Morning Mac,
According to your posted specs for the 12" G4PB you have the bare minimum requirements for Leopard. Even Tiger (10.4.11) should have 1GB RAM for decent performance (see my signature specs).
An easily installed 1GB RAM stick can be obtained at either of these reliable vendors:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/ or http://www.crucial.com/
However, we are getting ahead of ourselves. Try the following in this order:
Repair Disk Permissions with /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility/Repair DP, then do the following:
Run Repair HD from original CD or DVD install disk ........
Insert disk and re-start holding down the 'C' key until you see the spinning gear.
At Installer level...... DO NOT CONTINUE
At top left, use 'Utilities' Menu for Tiger or later and go 'Disk Utility'
Select your HD volume with Operating system on...
Select First Aid tab then select Repair Hard Disk button
If "RED" errors are repaired, run again, until none are reported then +run again+ just to be sure you are OK
Do NOT continue with the Installer... QUIT the Installer and return to the Finder ......... Eject the Disc
RESTART ..... Repair Disk Permissions .... AGAIN!
Try the above stuff first .... if that doesn't help, we will get into the "RESETS" steps next!

  • Tecra M7 DVD: CD/DVD RAM drive does not work since installing Vista

I did a clean installation on my Vista Ready new M7. It had XP tablet to begin with and the DVD drive worked fine. Indeed I used it to install Vista (Home Premium).
Now it does not work at all. It spins but does not read. Device Manager tells me device cannot start. Tried to update driver and it told me that it has the most uptodate driver.
Downloaded all the drivers from Tosh download centre for Vista upgrade of M7 (which got bluetooth, screen rotation etc to work fine). But none of the downloads seemed to be a driver for the DVD-Ram drive. Can not find a driver anywhere else (including Panasonic site).
    DVD drive is Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-841s
    Any suggestions?

    Hi
On the Toshiba driver page you can find the DLA for Tecra m7.
Did you try to install the XP DVD-RAM driver from the Toshiba page on the Vista OS?
    Maybe it will works
But listen the CD/DVD drive uses the common Microsoft drivers which are included into Vista or XP.
Therefore an additional driver should be not needed!
    One additional proposal;
Remove the CD/DVD drive from the device manager and reboot the notebook.
After new reboot the OS should install the drive again and should renew the software.
    Other hint:
    - Start the registry
    - Choose the registry key;
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    - In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters and LowerFilters then click Delete.
    - and restart the notebook

  • DVD RAM Drive issue

We have a macbook pro with 2 gig of RAM and osx tiger 10.4.8. We have a DVD RAM drive due to the nature of our work. This drive always seemed to take longer to sin up thn other drives but I just assumed this was o.k Now the drive simply spits all DVD types out, but plays CD's just fine which seems odd to us. We would like to know if it could be someting simple before we send it away to apple. Any suggestions please?

From my experience it sounds like you have a faulty drive. Replacement would be the option.

  • Help with the DvD Ram driver for Satelite P10

On my notebook (Sattelite p10) is Windows 2000 Professinal running, but the DVD Ram driver from the Toshiba Homepage does not work...
Where I can get a driver which is working on my notebook?

    Hi Val,
The correct driver for your notebook running Wnidows 2000 should be version 3.0.8.0 and is available for download from the Toshiba website.
I presume that this is the one which you have tried, so I am not sure what you mean when you say that 'it doesn't work'.

  • Disk caddy needed for DVD RAM drive.

Where can I find a disk caddy for the DVD RAM drive in the Power Mac G4 I just got? I have looked on the Internet for accessories but it doesn't appear to be something that is available any more.
The computer was dropped off where I teach and I'm trying to refurbish it so it will be useful but I cannot even install OS X as the drive needs a caddy.
I was even going to replace the drive itself with a normal drive that has a drawer but all I have readily available are CD-ROM drives.

    Hey Spock,
Thanks for the star. I checked out one of those DVD-RAMs and they're very cool looking as far as the disk is concerned:

If you want one to play with I'd be glad to send it to you. I have two.
Hey it's 5.2 GB. For the time that was huge. It's a lesson of the history of technology that what is currently huge will be a joke tomorrow. Hey look at the history of floppies here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floppy_disk
I remember the first computer I saw was a gigantic wall of triodes (look it up) thirty feet long.
There was so much heat you couldn't get within 20 feet of it. The tech who serviced it (replaced the tubes when they blew out, every few minutes) said:
"16K of random access memory. It'll do square roots!"
    and we were like:
    "Ooohhhh!"

  • Dvd-ram driver loss

Lost the DVD-RAM driver for Mat**bleep**a UJ-812.  As such, the T42p does not address the D drive.  Help!

@danieltc: you could try the "old-fashioned way": remove/uninstall the ATA/SATA controller from the device manager and then let windows search and install (again) the driver for your controller and for the drives (on that controller), including the driver for your optical drive
this should give windows a "refresh" (which is needed sometimes, especially when you upgraded windows -and not clean installed it-)

  • Problem w/Apple 4.7GB DVD-RAM drive (LF-D211A)

It rejects DVD-RAM disks it used to accept (spits them out immediately after sucking them in), but only in their plastic cases. If remove from the case, it accepts the same DVD-RAM disk but regards it as read-only. Note: no problem reading CDs and DVD-ROMs (yet).
How do I fix the problem? I would disable the read-only/writable sensor but I don't know how to do so.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Regarding the door, you will have to remove the drive's Bezel (faceplate) for the tray to exit the QS' opening. Pull lightly at the bottom of the faceplate and lift up.
What does Disc Burning say in System Profiler for the new drive?

  • Help! My T61 suddenly no longer recognizes my DVD-RAM drive!

Today I tried to retrieve some photos from a DVD and then a CD placed into my T61s DVD RAM (Mat**bleep**a UJ-852 ATA) ... and the drive was not recognized by the system.  It was not displayed in the "My Computer" listing.  The drive powered up whenever I insert a disk, but nothing else happened.
    The device properties box says:
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)
"Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."
But when I check, the system replies came back that the proper driver was already installed ... and that there was nothing else out there that was a "solution".
What can solve this sudden problem?
    Many thanks,

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks!  A variation of the latter seems to have worked and restored the DVD-RAM to proper working order:
    1) Disable drive
    2) Uninstall drive
    3) Remove drive
    4) Shutdown
    5) Restart
    6) Insert drive ... system recognized the drive, loaded the drivers and operation has been normal.
Thanks for the tip. (I had disabled and removed/inserted it before, with no success.  But until reading your note, I did not have a shutdown/restart in between.)

    Thanks
    Gopher.

These drives do wear out, but can be replaced. OWC sells a replacement drive and has good installation instructions <http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/superdrive/MacBook_13>. You will need some tools and a bit of patience, but you will end up with a new SuperDrive in your MacBook. The model that I have is identified as MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ867PD, and it works fine with all Apple software as well as Toast.
