A68HM-E33 wont boot if any card in PCI slot

Put together a system with an A68HM-E33 board. A4-5300, 4Gb Kingston HyperX, 120Gb Intel SSD, Win7 x64.  Got it all running fine. Went to install a PCI (not PCIe) wifi card. System will not post, gives 8 beeps, no BIOS splash screen.
Remove PCI wifi card, system boots normally. Tried a PCI ethernet card, same thing, won't boot.
Why would a card in the PCI slot stop the system from booting?
Sam

have you done >>Clear CMOS Guide<< with power cord removed?

  • Any recomendations for PCI slot configuration

Setting up a new Mac Pro, venturing into HDV. For the 4 PCI slots I have 2 GeForce cards, a Kona LHe, and the last slot will get the SCSI card for a RAID array.
When I put in the Kona Card I got a PCI configuration app on boot. It gave me several choices for configuring the slots at varous speeds, (16x, 8x, 4x, 1x).
The slots are not set independently. For example, The appropriate configuration per AJA support was the choice that gave: 16x for Video Card 1, 8x for Video card 2, 4x for the Kona, and 1x for the currently empty, (soon to have the SCSI card) slot.
Note: Per AJA support, the Kona is operating at full speed at 4x, however the Mac reports (the slot?) is operating at below maximum speed. As it does for the GeForce operating at 8x.
So my question is (finally - thank you if you are still with me) I am anticipating seeing this utility again when the SCSI card is installed. Is there minimum speed selection I should be aware of to prevent dropped frames etc. I am assuming if I need to reduce one of the other slots to get a higher speed for the SCSI the video cards are likley candidates. I cant think of any issues I would have running them at 8x or even 4x.
    Thanks,
    John

On the new Mac Pro systems, I don't believe you can get a 16/8/4/1 setup.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Conceptual/HWtechPCI/Articles/pciimplementation.html
Based on my experience with the Kona 3 and the PCIe Configurator, the best you can get is 16x, 8x, 1x, and 1x. The previous G5 systems did allow a 16/8/4/1, but not the newer models.
I currently ran into this issue setting up a Mac Pro with a Kona 3, X1900, and a SATA card. ATTO has some nice features, but it needed an 8x slot...which doesn't play with the Kona 3 and x1900. Not enough bandwidth left over.

  • Swich card with PCI slot?

Does NI make any switch cards that has PCI slot/bus ?

No we do not offer a PCI switch solution, we only have PXI or SCXI switches. Check the following link to see the NI Switch offerings:

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum - won't post with cards in pci slots

    Hi
Just completed a new build - with 3800 + Dual processor -  everything works fine but when I plug a PCI card in any PCI slot the computer then refuses to even post.
I've tried different cards and all of the pci slots but it makes no difference. Could it be a driver problem ? When I remove the card and try again the computer then starts up as normal.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

1: PCI cards are bad, most likely your problem
2: PCI slots on MB are bad, highly doubt this
3: PCI cards drawing to much power, very doubtfull

  • AGP Graphics card covers pci slot 2 & Problems with sound card

I have already posted this on another part of the forum.
Hi i have an M Audio Delta192 Audiophile soundcard which is not working fully
i have been on the phone to the M Audio technical support about this
my problem is apparently i need to put the pci Soundcard card into the first slot after my graphics card which would be slot no 2
my graphics card has a fan on top which covers pci slot no 2 so the next available slot is slot 3 which is where i have my soundcard now
a lot of the functions available are greyed out in the M Audio Delta control panel this is the software used to control the parameters of the soundcard
is this right do i have to install my Soundcard in slot no 2 for it to work correctly
if so is there any way around this
my graphics card is a ATI Radeon 9800 XT
if there is no way around this are there any agp cards that i can get that dont have a great big fan on top that covers pci slot 2 that are good quality & can run 2 monitors
i cant seem to find any

    Hi J D Knight
I'm Pretty sure it is this is what it has under my system profiler
    ATI Radeon 9800 XT:
    Chipset Model: ATY,R360
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x4e48
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-A14404-123
this was the graphics card installed when i bought the powermac
i understand the reasons for the fan as i am led to believe it is a powerfull card
but my main use is for audio is it true about the pci slots do i need to have my soundcard in slot 2 as M-Audio have told me if so then i do need to change my graphics card so i can get my soundcard working as it should
the only thing i need is my dual screens

  • Operating system corrupted, wont boot. Any way to get admin rights in cmd prompt?

My operating system has gotten totally corrupted and no longer boots. I get a recovery screen that tells me my registry is corrupted. File: \Windows\system32\config\system, Error code 0xc000014c. I have no recovery media (my computer, a refurb, did not com with any) I want to wipe the hard drive totally clean and do a fresh clean install. I can get to the command prompt through the system recovery by hitting esc at boot up but it wont allow me to reformat the hard drive because of write protections. I tried turning off the write protections at the cmd prompt level but it fails because I cant access it with admin rights. The only way I have found to turn on admin rights for the cmd prompt in online searches is to do it from inside the win8 operating system. Obviously I cannot do that as the OS is too corrupted to be run. Is there any command I can use at the dos prompt that will turn on admin rights? Or better yet just some way to force a total reformat?
    Thanks!

Are you following this? No need for command prompt. Just choose Recovery Manager.

  • Z87-GD65 wont boot from any drive, please help!

I desperately need your help on this issue. And thanks in advance for any answer!
    I have a brand new Z87-GD65 Mainboard.
When I select my boot device in BIOS all I get is: "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"
In BIOS I can find all my hardware (CPU, Drives, HDDs, DVD,... RAM) everything is shown correctly. Nothing missing there, all parts shown by correct values.
I cant boot through my DVD Drive or external USB Drive (on both I have Windows 7 which I want to install on my new system). The Windows DVD is also working properly, I checked it on my old PC.
No matter what Boot priority/device I choose (I think Ive tried them all by now) "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" is what I get after "save & reboot".
My BIOS Version is E7845IMS V1.8.
Any suggestions, what am I missing?
thank you very much for any help!

Glad you got it working....probably the controller got confused from the faulty DVD rom....

  • MacPro wont boot from any disk other than the main HD

    Hi all,
I want to startup my MacPro from a different drive other than the main (original) Macintosh HD, so I can do maintenance and for emergencies.
However, I cannot startup from a DVD. Not DiskWarrior, or even the retail Snow Leopard disk.
I attempted to install the OS on another internal drive, but the intallation seemed to fail (the disk I tried to install onto was Mac OS Extended, Case-sensitive, Journaled, but there were no complaints from the installer.)
So even though my computer runs OK, and I can continue doing work etc, I am unable to do the maintenance that I believe it needs.
    I have tried to:
    • Run the updated DiskWarrior DVD
    • Run the SL instal DVD
    • Taken all the extra wires/drives out of the back of the computer
    • Attempted to install the OS onto a second internal drive
    I have not:
    • Zapped the PRAM yet.
    • Run the computer in target disk mode and worked on it from my MacBook
    • Run the MacBook in target mode to use its DVD drive.
This problem has come up before on this machine. I can't remember what the problem was, other than I used to run the MacPro on its side. No longer. Not for the last few months.
Anybody come across this before? Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Aaron

My guess is one of your drives needs to be reinitialized. Only during format will the hidden partition blocks be tested, and of course a healthy set of partitions created, things that cannot be repaired normally - though Lion Recovery partition does have abilty to check the health of partition tables. And about the only reason I'd even buy Lion!

  • Wont boot to any device

    Hi there,
I purchased the above mentioned system board to build a system.
Everything is built and ready to go.
As I try to boot from anything the system hangs. All it does is detects the hard drive, the cd rom and the cd rw on the boot screen where it counts the memory and prompts me with the options to enter setup, boot menu and network boot. This is followed by a single beep from the system, and hangs.
I can enter SETUP no problem, it is after that when it fails.
I have changed the memory, but the same error still occurs.
Please help as soon as possible.
    Kind Regards,

Honestly, there may be a myriad of reasons why your phone may be stuck at boot stage. Care to share what you did before it occured? That would help us give you better troubleshooting.

  • How to reconfigure Cards installed in PCI slots

    Hi All
My customer has OEL linux. installed on his HP DL380 G7 server. It has 4 Emulex LPe11002 dual port cards installed. The cards in PCI slot 3 and 5 are needed for network connection.
So he needs to configure the cards in PCI slot 3 and 5 to be used for the network using port 0 on the cards.
Any guidance help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    those are HBA FC cards
What protocol your costumer want to have on those cards?
IPoFC ?if yes, I haven't done my self, how ever, I did read about time ago, and looks like due the costs of the hardware/switch, all the progress went to 10GE/24GE and infini band.
not sure if IPoFC is something in the normal skill set of a linux sysadmin.
What's the speed of those FC cards and switches?

  • What cards can I put into G4/350 Sawtooth PCI slots?

    Hi,
I have a generic PC TV tuner card and some video and modem cards for PCI slots.
Can any of these cards be used in my Mac running either Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X 10.4?
Are there drivers for these PC cards in Mac OS X at all?
Just trying to fill these lots since I have these cards laying around...

Yeah, I know ... the key is getting the Mac OS X drivers...
I'd love to get that TV tuner PCI card to work in my G4. heheh, but I just know most/many PC PCI cards dont have Mac drivers... d'oh... I'll Google search for the specific Tuner card name, etc..
It seems a waste to leave those PCI slots empty. heh.

  • My iMac wont boot up properly. Stops at background pic, no dock, only little apple show up top and cursor sticks on little spinning wheel. Have to shut down manually in back and reboot to get it to work. Any ideas why this sometimes happens?

    I'm running OSX 10.9.1 (13B42)
My problem is that occasionally my Mac wont boot properly. It gets to the background picture where the dock should open but it freezes there. The little apple shows up top left but nothing else and the cursor shows as the little spinning wheel that wont do anything. I can't click on the apple to restart, I have to switch off in back and then start up again. It usally boots all the way after that but I'm worried there's something up since this seems to be happeneing more frequently. Also I'm worried that having to manually shut down like that will somehow damage the software in time?
I tried a disk verify but there were no repairs needed. I repaired disk permissions too just in case but it still seems to happen every once in a while.
I've noticed recently that it happens the next reboot after I've been streaming movies online if that helps. Is there any reason for this and anything i can do to stop it in the future?

Thanks Paul, just ran the etrecheck you recommended and got this:

Hey Guys i have a problem with my mac since last month and it wont boot up it freezes in a grey apple logo and and spinning gear any body know how to fix this?

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
Before reconnecting an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
Boot in safe mode.* The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Post for further instructions.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see above for instructions.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it produces. Look for the line "Permissions repaired successfully" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
Boot into Recovery again. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
    Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup.
    Step 8
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
