Hi - please help. I had somehow persuaded my phone to save my password for an outgoing smtp server. After having to restore it for battery issues I can no longer get it to "hold" the password in the password field (goes back to optional"). I know there is a trick to this that I stumbled on the last time. Have tried everything - deleting and starting from scratch, resyncing, not syncing, etc. Please help...

After entering the password you must back out to the main Settings screen before going to mail. You must also NOT enter a RETURN at the end of the password.

You need to get that information from your internet service provider if you are using an email address provided by them or, if you are only using iCloud, then the info can be found here:

FWIW, in order to set up email, you need both an incoming and outgoing server address (in addition to your email address/user name and password). Those are the servers your email program uses when sending or receiving emails.

i have been struggling with SMTP outgoing mail as well. You guys are big mail. I tried everything. Last, I shut off the outgoing SSL, then sent mail, didn't work, then turned it back on, and tried again, it worked! Thank you guys! Now, if just continues to work, i to will be a happy camper.

Yahoo and Gmail support should be able to help you.
Not related to Firefox support, web mail doesn't use POP or SMTP protocols which is what email clients such as Thunderbird use for communicating with email servers.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

SMTP Outgoing Mail Server does not use password so I can not send mail..

Can anyone help me with this?
My POP email accounts on Hosting.365.ie do not use a password to authenticate outgoing mail. They rely on a prior authenticated download to enable the outgoing mail server.
On my MacBook Pro there is an option in the SMTP server settings under authentication for "none' and all my accounts work perfectly on the MacBook.
However my iPhone4 (brand new) and iPad (both up to date) there is no option under the SMTP server settings for "none". I think this is the root of the problem. Has anyone else come across this or is there a workaround?

Yeah, I don't know why the difference. Interestingly for me, the iOS version in iOS4.2 is "better" than the OSX version of Mail because now I can have more than one Exchange account.
I am sympathetic with your need to separate your lives. I have a client that accidentally got one of my alternate email addresses and cannot/will not update his address book with the "correct" address, despite my requesting several times over the course of a year. In any case, I don't think there is any way around this other than completely changing your email address. (If not a second Gmail, then Yahoo, Hotmail or other email provider.)
The only time I've ever seen a "no password" SMTP server was as I previously said, it used a "network authentication" method. Many, many moons ago, SMTP servers often didn't have password authentication so would often be used for spam relaying. Before mobile users, "network authentication" by ISPs was fine since they could figure out which user was spamming since they could trace the IP addr, MAC addr, etc back through the physical link to the user. But with mobile users who change networks constantly, the general trend was to password authentication, even for wired ISPs since their users would want to have access to send mail while away from home. (e.g.: you're a RoadRunner customer, but want to send mail while using your laptop on vacation in Italy.) This "prior authenticated download" I've never heard of anyone else doing.

Iphone 4 smtp outgoing mail problems

Hi,
I am trying to set up the outgoing mail with the iphone, however it fails everytime.
My mail server doesnt accespt smtp requests from external Ips, so in the past on my Treo phone
I had a vzwmail.net account and used that to send my mail out.
On my blackberry i had no problems, however on the iphone i cannot send mail.
My collegue who has att iphone has to use a att smtp server for his outgoing which works fine.
I tried the smtp.vzwmail.net with my [email protected] but this no longer seems to be working.
I was told to try hostname: outgoing.verizon.net with port 587
however then it asks me for a usename /password.
I have tried my cell number as username, also my Myverizon username and password , all which fail.
How can i resolve this and be able to send mail.

IPad smtp outgoing mail server choices not shown.

I use one mail Gmail account to where all my other accounts forward their mail. This makes it simple for me to organize 10 different accounts.
In iPad Mail settings I've setup my main Gmail account with 10 other smtp outgoing servers but when I write an email I don't have the option to select which smtp server is used. In Apple Mail (Mac OS) this system works fine as they have the option to select whatever smtp servers are setup.
What is the point of having the option in the iPad to set multiple outgoing servers if you can not select which ones are used before sending?
I know I could setup various POP/IMAP accounts for each smtp I prefer to use but why make it so complicated and waste space and bandwith downloading duplicate messages?
Has anyone found a solution to this or am I missing something obvious?

Outgoing Mail & Password Problems-Solution

Hi All,
After upgrading to Snow Leopard I had a couple of issues.
1) Couldn't send mail
2) Passwords in Mail were not getting saved
To resolve the outgoing mail problem see this article

Basically edit your outgoing server and change the outgoing port to custom and put in you appropriate port number. I use Cox without SSL so I used 25
For the password problem go to your Home folder, go into Library and move the folder called "Keychain to the trash then restart. After restarting open Mail go into Preferences and add your password back to your account. It should now retain the password. This will also help with other apps like Safari that use Keychain to store passwords.
Also I was able to copy a keychain from another computer to get back all of the passwords I already had. After the upgrade my keychain was mostly empty.

Sbcglobal SMTP Outgoing Mail

I ISP is sbcglobal and I want to send emails using my iPhone. These are the settings from sbcglobal:

pop.att.yahoo.com
smtp.att.yahoo.com
Outgoing mail server: Outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication
Outgoing mail port #: 465, secure connection (SSL) checked
I can receive my emails through pop3 but I can't send any emails from my iPhone.
The error message I get is:
Cannot Send Mail
Check the account settings for the outgoing server
"smtp.att.yahoo.com"

Brewgod23 - save yourself some headaches. You can actualy use the Y!Mail preset for ATT branded accounts (sbcglobal, att, etc). Following the instructions on this link will also give you "push" (most of the time) capabilities and IMAP where all of your online folders are synced with those on your iPhone.

Slow SMTP (outgoing mail) on my iPad

I am encountering an odd problem on my iPad. It takes a long time, thirty seconds to two minutes for outgoing mail to be sent. This is especially odd because I am using exactly the same SMTP settings as on my iPod Touch and MacBook and they don't have the problem. I have tried all other available port numbers for the SMTP server; this hasn't helped. Anyone have any suggestions?

I am having intermittant problems with sending email. When an email or two 'sticks' in the outbox, it seems to freeze all Mail comms, stopping incoming email traffic. Mail however also keeps on trying, so that the recipients are receiving multiple copies. Which is unfortunate as in a curious organisation, people are seeing the 'sent by iPad' tag line and understand that my new machine is causing problems.
Any help would be appreciated.

SMTP outgoing mail through 3rd party servers

Apple Mac Mail - used to be fine sending email via a different SMTP server by setting up the SMTP details.
This seems to have stopped working and I am told by the service provider that BT must be doing something "strange" stopping my connection via SMTP to the mail servers I want to use.
Suggested that maybe the port was being blocked. Mail is trying 25, 465, 587 ports.

Another "solution" they gave me was to change the DNS address in system preferences- Not Ideal as everytime you connect your laptop to a new network you will have to reset them.An absolute joke.
Their direct number is 08000 321 118 if you need them to talk you through it. Best to have your bank card to hand.

Why doesn't the smtp (outgoing mail server) change on switch locations

It would seem to me that when you choose Apple, locations and then select a new location, the Mail program should know that it should use the new smtp server.
I have dsl from at&t or the old southwestern bell. They have blocked sending to any other smtp server on port 25 while I am at my home.
I know how to switch them and recieve the prompt when it fails to select a different server. I know how to do this. However, other people who I have converted to the Apple platform, are displeased that it doesn't know to switch. This person is not technical and doesn't want to be technical.
In their terms, they just want it to work.
For right now, I told her to go into preferences, accounts within mail and to switch back and forth. I told her I would find a better solution.
discussions.apple.com shows a lot of people complaining about outgoing mail but not a lot of solutions on switching back and forth.
Anybody have any suggestions? I still think that when you switch the location, it should change your outbound smtp server.
