AAC-MP3 Question

O.K. here is the situation.
A while ago I converted my whole iTunes library to AAC. I have recently notices how the volume gets quieter on songs when you convert them to AAC. If I take an AAC song (converted from MP3 to AAC) and convert it back to MP3, will it still have the original quality of the MP3 before it was converted to AAC or will have AAC quality in an MP3 format?
Thanks in advance!

In your situation, you should leave the library as is; AAC files usually have better quality than MP3 for the same amount of disk space, but you will only see the quality benefit if you import from a lossless format as opposed to converting MP3 to AAC. AAC files aren't as compatible as MP3 ones.

  • Radio Streaming with FMS (aac, mp3, ogg, wma)

    Hi
I use a program that encodes in many audio format (acc, wma,
ogg, mp3, etc) and connects to shoutcast, icecast, windows media
server, live365, to distribute the web radio.
Willing to use FMS as the distribution server, I tried to
send the stream to FMS port but without succes. Online docs doenst
    treat the argument.
Is it correct to say that FMS is not set up to accept a
Windows Media, AAC+,MP3 or Ogg incoming stream and redistribute the
    radio to swf players?
    Best
    Jo

I've done a similar setup before for a radio station
    (x1fmradio.com)
What we did was setup 2 computers on the studio, one computer
receives the input from console and encodes output to shoutcast and
also outputs audio to the second computer running Flash Media
Encoder 2, which publishes audio to Flash Media Server.
If you want an all-in-one solution I would recommend using a
Digital Rapids system, which is not free, but you only need one
computer and you can publish audio/video to several servers at the
same time, including Flash Media Server.

  • I know how to convert WMA to AAC/MP3 for Itunes

I'm not sure if someone else has figured this out or not, but I figured out how to convert WMA files to AAC or MP3 for Itunes. First open the file using Quicktime. I think you need the Flip4Mac program. I'm not sure and you also need Quicktime pro. Choose Save. Select standalone movie. Choose location. It will convert song to movie, then import all your movies you selected. Organize Itunes by "Kind". Select all of your new movies files. Choose Advanced and convert to your appropriate file type.
I looked for a while and couldn't find a good way to change wma to aac. This takes a little bit, but it works. What do you think? It works for me.

Or, as has been pointed out in numerous posts, you can use EasyWMA.

  • Renaming AAC files question

This will be rather long winded, hopefully I can explain my problem sufficintly~!
When I received my Nano I imported about 2500 existing MP3 files from one folder of my laptops' hard drive into the Itunes Library. The MP3s followed a file naming convention of artist-song title (i.e. "Beatles--Hey Jude"). Since doing this I have imported songs from aprox. 10-15 CDs into ITunes, plus purchased about 30 more songs from the ITunes Store. They were imported/bought as AAC files.
I just got an external hard drive, and I am backing up all my music files, from the original hard drive folder, not the library. Because I am anal about it, lol, I would rather put all my music files into one big folder on the external hard drive. However, since the imported/purchased songs are AAC, they do not file the naming conventions of the MP3s, and furthermore right now on the laptop they are all in their own seperate little folders in the ITunes libray folder, listed by artist, and then album. The file names do not contain the artist info, rather they are just the track number and song title. If I drag them from their own folders into the "one big music folder" on the external hard drive, they are not indexed correctly so that all of one artists' songs are together, etc.
I had a handy program called Tag & Rename in which you could put together the file info easily for the MP3s, but it does not work for Apple Lossless files. Simply selecting the file and choosing "rename" and renaming it that way does not seem to do the trick.
Any ideas on how I can re-name the imported/purchased AAC songs so that they follow the same naming system of the MP3s? Its not a vital problem but it has been bugging me~!
    Thanks in advance~!

  • Converting from ALAC to AAC:  A question of quality?

I'm trying to back up my music electronically. I have all of my CD's on a rack in my entertainment center. However, I'm upgrading to a flat panel TV (YES!!!) finally, and with my old tube TV, the entertainment center is going, and being replaced by something much smaller.
Anyways, I'd like to make copies of my CDs, so I can store them away in the attic. I was told Apple Lossless is essentially the same as having the actual CD on your computer (so no loss in fidelity at all). However, I was wondering if this is true.
And if it is true, does this mean that I can rip CD's to my external HD in ALAC, and then convert them to AAC without any additional loss of quality??? (i.e. Does converting a song in ALAC format to AAC have the same quality as converting from the actual CD to AAC?)

Any lossless format - Apple Lossless, FLAC, etc., - should be identical to the original in sound quality.
I have found this to be this case in listening tests on fairly high quality stereo equipment. However, the best way to answer your question is to test this yourself. Rip a cd to Apple Lossless, and, I would suggest, to 320 bit AAC, and then see if you can hear a difference between them. I'll bet that you would be hard pressed to hear a difference even at 320 bit. After ripping my cd's I now regard my cd's as my backup, and the digital copies my actual collection, since that's what I actually listen to. So in that sense you always have a perfect backup, as long as you still have the cd.
I frequently convert FLAC's to AAC with outstanding results, and would expect the same with Apple Lossless. I think the bit rate you choose to convert to will be much more significant than whether you
convert from CD or lossless. Again, try it and see if you can hear a difference. (If my memory is correct - not always the case - the lossless format will be decoded first and then will be recoded to AAC - meaning you are essentially creating the AAC files from cd's in either case. Can't find a source on this tho to point you to).
One last thing, is storing them in the attic your only alternative? I just remember storing records in the attic and, well, they just never were the same with the summer heat. Cd's are more durable but I'd still be worried (unless it was a finished attic).

  • Elegant solution for converting a mixed AAC/MP3 playlist to all MP3s?

Does anyone have an elegant solution (AppleScript?) for taking a playlist containing a mix of unprotected AAC and MP3 files, converting only the AAC files into MP3 files, and preserving the order in the playlist? It seems to be a terribly tedious job to locate each of the newly created MP3s individually and placing them in order in the playlist. Looking for suggestions. Thanks.

Just had to say thanks for waking my mind up. I'm having troubles in converting over 7,000 MP3s to AACs. I decided to convet everything to the smaller 128kbps AAC meanwhile cleaning everything up. Well, the batch conversion stopped half way through and now I've got duplicats of a ton of stuff in both MP3 and AAC. I had no idea where it stopped on the MP3 list. I completely forgot about sorting by dates. Now, hopefully, I can figure out where it stopped and start up the converting from there rather than starting over and converting everything from the beginning. Got my fingers crossed.
Since I have a bunch of duplicates, I know I can sort these by "showing duplicates". However, is there any to tell it to delete all dups? It'll just take a long time going through and manually erasing. Any tips would be great.

  • Mastering for .mp3 question

Hi, I'm producing electronic dance music and doing my own mastering. The ultimate destination format is a 320kbps / 44.1k mp3, but for the releases I've had so far, typically I've had to deliver a .wav file to the label.
Prior to mastering, I'm bouncing my mix to a 44.1k / 24-bit .wav file with a maximum -6 db peak level. In my mastering session, one of the things I'm trying to achieve is a "competitive" loudness for the final master (hopefully without squashing all the dynamics out of the track). With this in mind, is it better to bring up the level of the source file to get close to 0 dB on the master output prior to hitting the mastering plugins, or is it better to let the -6 level come into the mastering plugs and use multiband compression and maximization etc. to get the level up?
    Thanks for anyone's help.

Remove (most of) the headroom with straight gaining first. The Input Scale control on the AdLimiter does that.
    Specific:
First, mix, aim for roughly -6 dB peaks. Don't use any mastering inserts yet.
Then when the mix is done, insert the AdLimiter. Set it's Input Scale so that the highest peak is at -0.5 dB (so add about 5.5 dB), then add Loudness (confusingly called Gain).

  • IPod Touch/mp3 Question

I download a radio program to my iPod Touch. The segments are in mp3 format, and are usually 40 minutes long. If I'm listening to the mp3 file and decide to turn it off before it's finished, when I turn it back on, I want to have it continue from the same point I was listening before I turned it off. How do I do this? It appears this can be done with videos, but not mp3s.

If you are playing it through the app, like it sounds like you are, you have to contact the developer or go to their support site.

  • Bit rate & format AAC or MP3)?

I am about to purchase about 200 1960's & 1970's rock songs from iTunes. This will be my first purchases:
    1. I notice that the bit rate that is auto selected for me is 128. It looks like I can change this. Which bit rate should I choice to get the best sound? Am I allowed to pick, for example, 160, 192, 224, 256, etc.? Are the only considerations quality of sound and storage size? Or for rock music, is 128 as good as I need?
    2. I see that there are at least two formats, AAC & MP3. Can I purchase my songs in MP3 format in case I ever want to play them outside of iTunes or do I have to buy them via AAC?
I have a MacBook Pro with iTunes and a Treo 680 with pTunes (which I have rarely used to listen to music). At some point in the next few months, I will probably replace my Treo with an iPhone.

The additional hard drive space is negligible compared with the enhanced sound quality (hard for some people to hear) and the non-DRMness. It's totally worth it to get the iTunes Plus version, since you can do whatever you want to with that song file (your personal info is stored in the file, so if you distribute it you will be found out!). That means you can burn it however many times you want, play it with any media player program and, of course, load it onto non-ipod mp3 players.

  • AAC vrs MP3

    Hi,
I put a song from my itunes library (self recorded from garage band) up on my friends website that I'm building for her using iweb 08.
    http://tobyaltman.com/heartoby.html
When I convert it to MP3 it will not play on my intel mac. (it plays until it's up on the website) I had it up as an AAC and it worked great and I was happy about it but she told me she it would not play on a friends computer that I suspect isn't a mac. Her own computer is from 1941 so she was excited to go to her friends house to see her new website and hear her music but was dissapointed. I'm not sure if it's a mac/pc AAC/MP3 thing or if i'm doing something wrong.
There probably isn't any one on this forum using a dell or gateway who could check this? Perhaps some know the answer to this. I would appreciate it.
    peter

I raised the volume in itunes using file, get info, options, etc
and republished it. I can't tell if it is louder. (I did the same the other day and reburned a cd and it was louder)
I don't know what the other computer has on it because i don't know the person. Toby is a great singer, but doesn't know how to take the cap lock off when she types if you know what I mean, so asking her what be futile.
I have another site I'm building where the lady wants a Mozart sonata to play automatically.
    http://antiqueboutique.net/
She has another business where it's playing at
http://www.maidstonearms.com/home.html (it will come off here eventually)
I have taken the "midi file" off this site, brought it into itunes, changed it into every format they have and published it onto http://antiqueboutique.net/
    and it will not play.
It plays fine in any format in itunes, on my desk top, in the websites folder were I publish to first. etc
When I "fetch" it up to the web it won't play. I don't think it's a permissions thing because it was playing on http://www.maidstonearms.com/home.html.
But that is with a different server co.
Could permissions differ with different servers?
I clicked on yor links for third party audio software and would like to check it out.
I'm slightly reluctant because I recently bought this intel mac when my G4 PowerBook was corrupted from downloading freeware. It started freezing up....applecare did repair it.
I'm at a loss about the Mozart. Except my wife is a pianist and has agreed to play the Mozart Sonata for me to record with GarageBand. I imagine permissions woudn't be an issue then.....sigh
The site http://antiqueboutique.net/ is a gigantic job (300 page) thats 30xs bigger than anything I've made before. The owner want's a big party and viewing of it on Sept 29 double sigh....

  • How do I convert an mp3 or WMA file to a m4a file?

I read on another forum that iTunes can convert mp3 and wma files to m4a format.
    How do I do this?

    That is correct.
By default if you load a .wma file into iTunes, it will AUTOMATICALLY convert it to another format first, since it needs to in order to play it. However, you can also convert any other file format that iTunes supports, assuming it can get loaded into iTunes.
To set what format you want to convert to, go EDIT->PREFERENCES. Click the IMPORT SETTINGS button and select which encoder you want (AAC, MP3, Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV are supported) and then select the bit rate if you are choosing a lossy format (AAC/MP3).
From there, any .wma files you load into iTunes (you can do this by going into iTunes and selecting FILE-> ADD FILE TO LIBRARY, or simply right clicking a .wma file and OPEN WITH iTunes) will convert to that format. ALSO, if you have any other files already in iTunes you wish to convert, select the file(s), and go to ADVANCED -> CREATE ___ VERSION (the blank being whatever you selected before) and it will convert for you.
Remember, converting a lower quality song to a higher quality format/bit rate won't "up-covert" any quality, the lowest quality you start with is the highest you can possibly get, but if you still prefer to have a certain file format or bit rate to compress to, this is the feature you'd use!
Let me know if you have any other questions!

  • How do I share from upgraded garageband 10.0.2 to iTunes as an mp3

The upgraded garageband 10.0.2 is supposed to have re-introduced sharing to iTunes as an mp3, however I can't see that anywhere. In the share to iTunes window there is no option to share as an mp3.

Mac is a computer and operating system.
Apple is a company that makes Mac computer and Mac operating systems.
But my question is: WHERE is it as an option???? It was announced as a feature of the newest update!
Where did you see this announcement?
Seems you can export to disk as MP3, not share to iTunes as MP3.
    From GarageBand Help...
    http://help.apple.com/garageband/mac/10.0/?lang=en#gbnd7cbf5ed9
    Export a song to disk
Choose Share > Export Song to Disk.
To rename the exported file, select the name in the Save As field, then enter a new name.
Choose a location to save the exported file from the Where pop-up menu.
Select the format for the exported file (AAC, MP3, or AIFF).
Choose the quality setting for the exported file from the Quality pop-up menu.
    Click Export.

I have been trying to put music I bought on Itunes on my Samsung Note 2 but my media player won't play m4p files so I tried to convert the files to mp3 but I couldn't, because a message says they are protected files. I then tried downloading different media player apps to see if they would play them but had no success. Can anybody help with a solution to this problem?

First quit iTunes and look in your iTunes folder.
On Windows, the iTunes folder is in your My Music folder.
On Mac, the iTunes folder is in your Music folder.
Follow this path:    iTunes > iTunes Media > Music >
Here there should be all your music folders. Open the folders containing the music that is not playing. Right click "get info" (mac) or right click "properties" (windows).
This window will tell you the file type. iTunes will play music in AAC, MP3, and Lossless, etc.
If the files are .wma you will need to convert them into ACC or MP3 format for it to play on an iPod. In iTunes, highlight the tracks that you want to convert, then on the menu bar, Advanced > Create AAC/MP3 version and the tracks will convert. Delete the old files.
If the file extenstion is anything like .exe .txt .rar  then you don't have an audio file.

  • Questions on normalizing thousands of audio tracks.

So I have a lot of audio tracks in my iTunes library. AAC, MP3, etc., Ripped from Vinyl, CD, mic. About 5,000 tracks.
I am considering normalizing them through Soundbooth CS4. But, has anyone tried to process so many tracks? And what of the quality? Will it degrade the sound?
I have the latest MACPRO Quad Core and I also have Soundbooth CS4 on a PC Pentium Dual Core. So I am considering splitting the chore to these two machines. Is this a bad idea?
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    Victor

I would suggest using a different application to normalize 5000 audio files.  Soundbooth has a very good normalization algorithm, but is not at all ideal for batch processing that many files.
For the most part, normalizing and resaving already-compressed audio files is going to cause a bit of quality loss as you recompress the files when saving them.  There are a few applications around that claim to offer lossless normalization, and while I'm not necessarily convinced of that claim, the few times I've tried them out there was not a noticable loss of quality.
Check out http://www.downloadsquad.com/2007/01/04/how-to-normalize-your-mp3-volume-levels-the-right- way/  for some tips and links for Windows.  I'm not aware of any similar tools for Mac, but would advise against letting iTunes do it.
