AAPLJ45,1 vs. 2013 MBA 13 inch

AAPLJ45,1 = Macbook pro that's coming out
Trying to decided which I should get, I will use it for home use mostly web browsing, homework and light gaming everyone once and a while. BTW I use my computer a majority of the day when out of school and use it till I go to bed some days after school. I am going into 8th grade this year. Next year is high school I am allowed to bring any technology I want to school once I get to high school. Oh and this would be my first mac I have an iPad 2, iPhone 5, iPod shuffle and a iPod classic. Money is not a worry, it's going to a gift from my grandma so it's not coming out of my pocket.
So, which is better for me?

It may come down to the DVD drive. If you're watching movies then the MBA won't do. I have the MacBook 13" and the MacBook Pro 15" and I love my MBA 13". I've had MBA's for quite a while. This MBA is quite quick. But, I would go ahead and up the processor to 2GHz w/4GB RAM. If you can live with 128 SSD then your good. Otherwise you have to up it to 256 SSD.
The SSD makes such a speed difference, I think the MBA will outperform the MBP 13" pretty easily.

  • How much difference will I notice between 2011 and 2013 MBA, fully upgraded?

I'm considering upgrading. I have a 2011 13 inch MBA, fully upgraded. So:
    * 256 GB SSD
    * 4 GB RAM
    * 1.8 Ghz core i7
I'd get the 2013 13 inch with 512 GB, 8 GB ram and 1.7 GHz i7. I don't need the battery life, I'd be upgrading because I've noticed a few choke points on my current machine:
    * Sometimes tabs will lag when opening (despite very fast internet)
    * Fan is loud
    * Computer runs hot in summer months
    * Occasional system lag or lag on specific programs like Pages when I have large files open
    * General slowness that happens sometimes.
Will any or all of those issues be reduced with the increase in RAM or other system wide increases?

It's hard to say just how much improvement it will make on the examples you gave, because there is no indicator of how much resources are being consumed by open and running apps.
Will you notice a difference... Probably. A HUGE difference, likely not, unless the memory resources are a limiting factor already on you machine.
I have a 2010, a 2011, and a 2012 MacBook Air. The difference between the 2010 and the 2013's speed is only slightly evident on 75% of my usage. The other 25%, the diffrence is more pronouced (when doing long duration tasks like video and photo editing).
You may want to upgrade this time around, especially with your memory possibly being a factor. I however, am sitting out this one cycle. (unless I fall of the wagon)

  • WIFI issues with 2013 MBA

    Hi
I would be most grateful for help with the following - I recently purchased a 2013 MBA (latest model) but have been having issues with the wifi speed. My broadband normally runs at 6-7Mbps (which I check regulary) but my MBA can only be described as slow when browsing simple web pages (the other pc's in the house don't have the same issues). I have checked the transfer rate on my WIFI in Network Utility and it sits at 144 Mbit/s so I am not entirly sure where the problems lies and why it is only affecting my MBA. I have tried switching channels but it has not helped. I am aware that recent MBA have issues with WIFI but not sure if these problems are related.
    Thanks
    Tim

  • Updated to Mavericks (2013 MBA) - Insignia television no longer recognized as a display

Like it says - My Insignia television is no longer recognized as a second display. Absolutely nothing is showing up under the display tab in my system preferences. Currently running:
    - 2013 MBA
    - Insignia Television
    - 3rd party Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter

    Try this:
System Preferences > Displays > Hold the options key and click on Detect Displays see if that fixes it.  Otherwise perform a PRAM reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379) without the adaptor connected and then try to connect it after.

  • Late-2013-15-Inch-MBPr Windows8.1 Bootcamp Guide

After 2 days of debugging BSOD errors I was able to install Windows 8.1 on my Late 2013 15 Inch MacBook Pro Retina.
So the first thing you need to do is ditch the Bootcamp assistant drivers and download the older drivers from the apple website...
You can download them here: Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5640
The next step is to create your USB Boot Disk through Bootcamp, make sure the format is MSDOS-FAT.
After your boot disk is created move the downloaded drivers onto that disk and rename the folder to "Windows Drivers."
    Now open Disk Utility.
Click on the Hard Drive at the top of the list.
Click Partition at the top of the window.
Click the "+" on the bottom leftish side of the window.
Size your partition by dragging the gray bar that separates the two partitions.
    Name the partition, "BootCamp"
    Change the format to, "ExFat."
    Click "Apply."
Now it's time to install Windows.
    Shut your Mac down.
Turn it on holding the "Option" key.
    Choose "EFI Boot."
Follow the on screen instructions until you get to the select disk to install screen.
Choose the 4th disk partition in the list, and click format (if this is not an option choose new or continue.)
After Windows is installed and set up go straight to the desktop and click on the folder in the bottom left.
Click on "This PC." on the left side of the window.
Now choose your usb storage device and open the folder up that we named "Windows Drivers."
    ****WARNING****
DO NOT INSTALL THE BOOTCAMP.EXE FILE FROM EITHER THE APPLE FOLDER OR THE MAIN FOLDER.
Now select the drivers folder, and install all drivers from the Apple folder EXCEPT for the BootCamp driver.
Install all drivers from the "Intel" folder except for the graphics driver.
Install all drivers from the "Marvell" folder.
Install the "NvidiaProgess.exe" from the "Nvidia" folder only if you have a dedicated video card.
Install the "BroadcomWireless64" driver from the "Broadcom" folder.
    Install all "Realtek" drivers.
    Install "Asix" Drivers.
    Install "Cirrus" Drivers.
    Install "Atheros" Drivers.
The rest of the drivers are optional, but once again stay away from the BOOTCAMP.EXE files.
So at this point your Mac should be running Windows just fine, and you should not have any blue screen errors, but your trackpad may not be working with right clicks.
To get right clicks working follow the instructions on this website. http://trackpad.powerplan7.com/installation_instructions.htm (be sure to reboot between both installations)
If you have an Nvidia graphics card your screen may not be as bright as with the non dedicated GPU. These settings can be adjusting in the "Windows Control Panel," under "Display Settings."
Congratulations you now have all of the features working on your Mac in Windows, and you can use all of the features of Windows.

It is entirely unsupported by Apple, (which makes it a hack).
I don't really care what your opinion is, I have no idea if you have a clue what you are doing, but I do know that Apple does
    Have a nice day
    EFI booting has several advantages.
    1. No fragile hybrid MBR. Even Apple's Disk Utility does not recognize it and does not keep it in sync.
    2. No CSM-BIOS layer which makes the boot faster.
    3. Partitions are GPT and hence can be expanded/shrunk.
    4. Windows 8.x supports (U)EFI.
    5. Apple Support for Bootcamp is limited anyway.

  • Can't login to Panera wifi with new 2013 MBA

My 3 other devices, old 2010 MBA, iPhone, and iPad can login fine.
Every pc here is logged in.
My brand new July 2013 MBA can not login.
I've cleared Safari cookies, cache, turned off firewall to no avail.
I see the Login screen, both in a dialag and in Safari when I open it,
click on Login, see "Redirecting..." as on the other devices,
then on new MBA get "Unable to open web page."
The new MBA can login at home and to other hotspots such as the nearby one that I'm using now.
    Any suggestions, please?

I've been using Panerabread WiFi for years with laptops - Toshiba and now MacBookPro (couple of years old).  The problems started when my iPhone 4S would not bring up the log-in screen, which had been working for 1-1/2 years.  Seems the new Cafe' system would have a fight between the Cellular Data and the WiFi for dominance.  Called the Panerabread help number (after getting it off the webpage on my home computer), and they tried a few things including having me give them the IP of my phone so they could try from their end.  It eventually seemed to work, but the following morning I had the same issue.
Solution included putting my phone into airplane mode, along with wifi mode.  That and trying to start a Google app page instead of Safari.  I think eliminating the cookies and such also helped, but the major part was to force only a wifi connection - like my laptops do.

  • 2013 MBA running hot while using Chrome?

I have a 2013 MBA core i7, 8gb ram. Whenever I use chrome to surf the web my computer gets really hot. But when I use safari, the computer gets much cooler. What seems to be the problem with chrome?

The problem is that Google has yet to figure out how to develop an app for OS X that doesn't suçk.

  • 13inch laptops: 2013 MBA 1.7GHz or 2012 rMBP 2.6GHz ?

So back to square 1. I held out for a new rMBP being announced yesterday at WWDC but no.
    I have a 2011 MBA 13 (1.7GHz, 256GB) and I'm between buying a
    - 2013 MBA 13 (1.7GHz i7) or an
    - rMBP (2.6GHz i5) (no refurbs, brand new)
    both at 8GB ram / 256GB storage.
    I do:
    - mostly coding (which is the catch regarding screen res)
    - some Photoshop (though I have a 27" TB display for those occasions )
    - and then a lil gaming (Asphalt 6, SW Kotor II and the like) which run quite well on my MBA, except for the fan going crazy :/
    Any recommendations?
    Mainly:
    - how do the two processors compare?
    - I've heard that the rMBP, although it runs at a higher res, the usable real estate is actually smaller than the MBA (this is where coding comes in)
    - then the 2013 MBA has that PCIe SSD, which is apparently very fast. Argh!!!

  • 2013 MBA with 802.11ac won't choose 5GHz even when faster

I have a 2013 MBA and new (802.11ac) Airport Extreme.  With the base station in dual mode (2.4 and 5.2 networks sharing same SSID), the MBA refuses to connect to the 5GhZ network most of the time, even when very close to basestation.  This is annoying for wireless Time Machine backups and other high-throughput use cases (files copies to/from network are another).  Without moving computer, when I set basestation to use diff name for 5GHz network and then manually select it, transfer speeds go from ~12MB/sec to >40MB/sec (impressive!).
Using iStumbler, I see that the 2.4GHz network indeed shows "better" signal levels, BUT IN THE REAL WORLD the 5GHz link is MUCH faster.  What's up with that?
I'd like to go back to dual-mode just for elegance and simplicity.   Plus, it seems like a bug.
My question is:  Can I force the MBA to always link to 5GHz network, or at least its propensity to pick it despite 2.4GHz link (falsely) appearing to be better?
    Thanks!

I actually install large wireless networks professionally, so maybe I can help clear up a few misconceptions.
To the original poster, there really isn't a way at this point to force the MBA to select the 5.0GHz network, but this really isn't a "bug" of the MBA.  It's really a missing feature from the AirPort.
Your assumptions on how the client device works are correct.  They select the band based on the signal strength (basically Signal to Noise Ratio [SNR]).  This is actually a function of the NIC itself and is based in the hardware.  Since the vast majority of client NIC cards are manufactured by a couple of companies, it will probably take them a while to change the operation, and for marketing reasons, I don't know if they want to at this point.
The vast majority of people that I encounter every day don't understand that there's more to wireless performance than signal strength.  They look at the corner of their device and say, "I have 4 bars, look at how great my network is.  Yeah, it's a little slow, but that's just how wireless is".  Companies that sell consumer wireless access points are able to say "Cover your house with a single device".  I really think that the lack of consumer awareness is what causes trouble for those of us (like the original poster) that understand that there's more to it than that.  Even OS-X falls into this marketing bubble.  Why do I have to hold down Alt and click on the wireless icon to actually see performance data?  In my opinion, the icon should be the Transmit Rate as a number and I hold Alt to see the RSSI when I need to troubleshoot, but that would scare most people.  For these marketing reasons, I don't think that you will find client devices selecting 5.0GHz by default until 802.11ac really gains in popularity.
The other option, which wouldn't require a tremendous amount of work on Apple's part is a feature that many enterprise wireless manufacturers refer to as "Band Steering".  Basically, the AP (AirPort Base Station) will ask the client for its capabilities.  Once it knows that the client is 5GHz capable, it pushes the client over to that frequency and there isn't anything that the client can do about it.  If I knew how, I would be requesting that feature as an advanced option of the AirPort product line.  That way, those of us that really care about wireless performance are able to get it without having to hack through and broadcast a 2.4GHz network that will basically be unusable in the coming years since the new wireless standard is 5.0GHz only.

  • Trying to choose between 2013 MBA,MBP 13'' and new 2013 MBP retina 13''

Hello everyone:) im new here to apple discussions. Basically i would like to ask which laptop i should buy, 2013 Macbook Air 13'', Macbook pro 13'' or Macbook pro retina 13'' (2013). I already have a main 15' inch laptop, i just need something to have extra however, since im investing money i would like to get the worth of it (aka best config too). So even though i can say the MBA is the cheapest and i should buy that since im looking for a secondary laptop, if i can splurge a bit more to get better memory or screen ( my eyes get strained easily so screen is important) that would be great so in my mind its like this
    MacBook Air:
    Pros: Light,cheapest of the bunch
Cons: Does not come with enough memory, is non upgradeable :/
    Macbook Pro
    Pros: Upgradeable, DVD drive
Cons: Older model, Heavier, Not that good of a screen (is it les powerful than the air?)
    Macbook pro retina
Pros: Great screen, Light, fastest of the bunch
    Cons: Expensive/ non upgradeable
IDK WHAT TO DO :c help me?

I am not sure how you are planning to "easily utilise my iMac 2010 27" as display for Mac Mini" I am concerned that might not work out nearly as well as you might think. I have seen that attempted by others and the results were pretty clunky and could easily wipe out any anticipated speed gains. Be sure and talk to someone who uses an iMac as a display for another computer before you spend any money.
That said, if I were in your shoes I would either go with a current top end iMac or a maxed out, top end Mac mini and a 27" Thunderbolt monitor. You will end up spending about the same either way. You can save a few hundred dollars buying factory refurbished machines from the online Apple Store or Smalldog.com but you take your choice of what is available and don't expect it to be there tomorrow.

  • Persisting crashes with brand new iMac late-2013 27-inch (14,2)

    Please help!!!
Last week I purchased the latest iMac late-2013 (14,2) 27 inch with everything top range directly from the Apple Online Store. My configuration in a nutshell is the iMac (of course) with wireless keyboard and magic mouse, attached to it through Thunderbolt a LaCie 5Big (10TB) external drive as well as a USB connected WD MyBook (2TB) for Time Machine and a USB3 connected WD MyPassport (2TB) for those files I want to keep mobile between my devices, all of this on OSX 10.9.1. Futher details on the hardware below:
    Model Name:          iMac
      Model Identifier:          iMac14,2
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:          3.5 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          8 MB
      Memory:          32 GB
      Boot ROM Version:          IM142.0118.B00
      SMC Version (system):          2.15f2
My problem is that it keeps crashing... sometimes while doing some Final Cut X or Logic Pro X but other times while simply copying files between hard disks while Time Machine is running and everything else is closed... I can't figure out what the root cause or the particular event that triggers the crashes, thus they are quite unexpected and pretty abrupt - no warning signs at all.
I read in some of the threads that the 3rd party RAM may cause some problems but my 32Gb RAM came directly from Apple as configured while purchasing.
Here is the latest report my system gave me and I know some of you folks are pretty good figuring out what these messages mean. I will most likely get in touch with Apple support but before I do, I wanted to check with you geniuses before I spend hours on the phone with Apple support. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Oh. You didn't 'splain that. In this case here's a suggestion for a start:
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Mountain Lion or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
You may want to do a hardware test to determine if there is a hardware failure:

  • ISight not working with Webex, GoToMeeting or Lync...BUT works with Skype, Facetime, Photobooth (June 2013 MBA)

Brand new MacBook Air (June 2013, 8MB RAM, 500GB SSD)
iSight not working with Cisco Webex, Citrix GoToMeeting or Microsoft Lync (error = webcam not detected); BUT iSight works with Skype, Facetime and Photobooth.
3 hours of phone support with Webex - no luck.
Tried SMC and PRAM reset - no luck.
Tried erasing disk and reinstalling OSX 10.8.4 and apps manually with latest versions - no luck.
Apple phone support says it's not Apple's problem because Apple apps work.
Exchanged at Apple Store for another new MacBook Air, again installed apps manually with latest version (not from time machine) - STILL NO LUCK!!!
Is there an update Apple or Cisco, Citrix and Microsoft need to put out for the new MBAs or do I just have 2 lemons???

    You're welcome.

It will be interesting to see what the vendors say about using a Mac-compatible external webcam.
If not, some netbook or other Windows® device might offer compatibility at a much lower cost than a compatible Apple notebook.
We will watch for your update(s).  What the vendors tell you will be very helpful to others who share this or similar issues with their new MBAs.

  • MacBook Pro Late 2013 13 inch & games like Minecraft.

Hey, I'm just wondering if the MacBook Pro Late 2013 - Mid range 13inch laptop will handle games like Minecraft on high at 60fps? I'll also be using the machine for video/photo editing. Thank you.

That should easily be possible. You would get up to 100 on the lowest spec model (13 inch, 4gb ram, quad core i5 2.4ghz processors, intel iris integrated graphics)

  • When is apple discontinuing MacBook Pro 2013 13 inch?

When will apple discontinue MacBook Pro 13 inch, 2013? They have already goo ten rid of the 15 inch.

You mean the non-Retina models... and no one knows when or if the 13" non-Retina will be discontinued. It's a bit long in the tooth, first being introduced in June of 2012. So it probably won't survive the 'next' round of new machines - but no one really knows!
I really don't want a completely closed machine, personally, and if you don't either I would grab the 13" while it's still available.

  • Random pixelation on 2013 MBA?

This has happened thrice since I got my new MBA (2013, 13"/i7/8GB/256GB):
First time in TextEdit and next in Safari. I spent 1579€ in this machine so I obviously asked for a replacement (I'm within the 14 days window), but these are my questions:
Is this a common issue (aka it's happened to most of you)?
Is it possible that it happens again with the replacement?
I rely on this machine, so last thing I want is asking for a replacement every week.

No. This is not common at all.
It is better to return the computer and get another one within the 14 days return period.
Standard troubleshooting steps to take for these kinds of anomalies are:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
    Reset PRAM.

    Best.
