Abandoned Lightroom 1.0 - my list of critical showstoppers

I have seen several recent examples of users venting on this forum but sadly, I have to symphatise as in my own experience the quality of the Lightroom 1.0 release, specifically the library module does in fact justify this level of frustration.
I was looking forward to Lightroom becoming the new gold standard and the app that I would spend days and nights in when I was not out shooting. As it is I have abandoned my trial with Lightroom after three days. I never got past the Library module (and since Ligthroom can't function without a library that sealed it's fate).
The stability showstoppers:
- Importing with generating previews always crashed after few thousand images, no option to generate 1:1 previews during import completely baffling*
- Importing without generating previews would randomly not import some of the images, deleting the library and starting again would cause a DIFFERENT set of images to be randomly not imported - no reason given, the images that could not be imported could be opened just fine in Camera Raw and Bridge would happily generate previews for them
- Generating previews after importing always crashed after a few thousand images
- Frequent out of memory errors
That's just the MAJOR stability issues. Then there is performance (I have about 30,000 images, not that I could ever import all of them into Lightroom...)
And then there are the functional showstoppers:
- I will absolutely NOT trust Adobe with my images or my metadata (not after the fiasco with Bridge corruping it's caches in EVERY release to date or the issues with files that were renamed on import getting corrupted, and an application that comes with a built in tool to check for library corruption doesn't exactly inspire confidence either) so I import in place and want all of my metadata to be stored in *.xmp files. BUT WHY OH WHY does generating previews cause Lightroom to write out an *.xmp file for every file it generated a preview for!?! Even Bridge was smart enough to only write out *.xmp files when I actually did something to the image!
- Since there is no way to disable 'folder aggregation', the folders view is usessless for trying to organize images. Try this, take a folder with 1000 images, create three subfolders and try to organize the images into subfolders. Every time you click on the parent folder you see all 1000 images. You have no idea which ones you've already moved and which are still in the parent.
- Why can't renaming 'files' just rename the files in the file system!?! Since Lightroom is NOT a browser it MUST NOT force me to organize / rename my images outside of it since it then looses track of the files.
Yes, I have logged all of these issues with Adobe. Have I heard anything from Adobe? No. Lightroom has been out for FOUR months. Given all of the stability problems that have been widely reported you would expect that a company that is in touch with it's users would in fact react and put out a couple dot-dot releases (1.0.1, 1.0.2) to address the stability showstoppers. That would at least enable them to get a feel if they're in fact addressing the most severe issues that their user base is experiencing. But no they chose to put their heads in the sand and pretend the users are happy and continue working on adding new functionality. Here is what's going to happen. They'll release 1.1 and half my showstoppers will still be there. And who knows how long we'll have to wait before the next release comes out.
*Yes, I am aware how much disk space 1:1 previews would use but I don't care, I have a 30" screen and I have no problem throwing disk space, cpu power or machine time at the problem but I ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to waste my own time waiting for Lightroom to perform processing 'on the fly' that could have been performed in bulk while I sleep.

Lee,
With all due respect, I think that you're still missing my point and in doing so I believe you're making my case stronger! The disclaimer is that I don't apply any metadata to the image during importing (my camera already embedded my name in every raw file and keywording at this point doesn't make sense in my workflow).
The application of defaults is EXACTLY why I don't want the *.xmp files written out until 'I' have manually modified the image in some way. Applying the tone curve is great example. So today Lightroom applies a medium curve. Maybe tomorrow version 1.1 is going to get smarter and apply different curves depending on the contrast of the image (or some other default behavior will change, like what happend to the Shadows slider in Bridge 1.x, it used to default to 0, now it defaults to 5). But then we have the question of compatibility! Which images should it apply the new smarter defaults to? The natural choice is: images that the user modified should stay the same, new images and those that have not been modified in any way should automatically benefit from the new defaults. Comitting to defaults at the time of importing seems completely unnecessary. If they're defaults, why write them out at ALL? I wouldn't mind as much if the *.xmp files were 'empty' so to speak. But if I recall correctly, the're not, they include all the ACR settings at 'current' default level as if I manually set them.
As for 'What's the point of importing your images into the LR database if this is the case?'. I never said I like it using a database but I appreciate the pros and cons of this approach. I would use Bridge instead but it has a different showstopper: the generated previews are too low quality to judge image sharpness (see BreezeBrowser in High Quality mode for what a preview should look like, I posted about this in the Bridge forum recently). The low quality previews are THE reason I am looking at Lightroom but of course it also promises to be 'so much more' than Bridge.
Of all the issues that I consider to be showstoppers in the library module of Lightroom 1.0 this is the least important and I will agree to disagree with you. If 1.1 fixes the stability issues, improves performance and delivers a usable interface for managing files and folders that keeps them consistent with the file system I'll be happy to give Lightroom another shot even if it means *.xmp files being generated for every image as it's imported.

  • Why doesn't Lightroom appear in my list of installed apps, with the option to update it.

All the other apps appear available to update, but with Lightroom I have to download it and do a fresh install each time.

Sorry, re-reading the info, the path is correct - but it isn't perhaps as clear as it should be; might I suggest changing the wording to something like 'look for the opm.db file located at
    /AppData/Local/Adobe/OOBE/opm.db
however - that doesn't solve the issue of Lightroom 5 not being listed in my installed apps!

  • Lightroom 5 is missing from Creative Cloud's Apps List. Please help.

I've just subscribed to the Photoshop Photography program, installed Creative Cloud, installed Photoshop CC from there and could run it just fine, but I couldn't find Lightroom 5 in the list of apps that I could install from CC. Please help.

    Hi krio,
If you're a paying Creative Cloud member, you may not see Lightroom in the Creative Cloud if your computer doesn't meet the minimum system requirements. Check to make sure that your system meets the minimum requirements for the latest release of Lightroom.
If you're using a trial version of Creative Cloud, the Lightroom trial is not available through Creative Cloud. It is, however, available as a stand-alone trial. See Install Lightroom trial | Creative Cloud membership.
    Note:
Lightroom requires a 64-bit-compatible operating system.
Creative Cloud only lists the application compatible to your system.

  • How to Export a list of filenames from Lightroom

Is there a way in Lightroom to export a list of filenames to a spreadsheet? If I need to write a script, what is the best way to do that?

  • Lightroom 5.3 will not import files

Suddenly getting message "Some import operations were not performed" and "The following files were not imported becsuse they could not be read" followed by a list of the files selected for import. Was working fine the day before.
Using Mac with OS X 10.9.2 and reading .NEF files from camera or card reader.
Import works with LR4.4 so don't believe hardware is the issue.
Have uninstalled and reinstalled LR5.3, but getting same message.
Really stuck at this point. Any help greatly appreciated.

    Keith,
I am now having the same problem.  On my recent trip, I had no trouble importing.  Now a few days later, with the same computer, same camera, same SD card, same card reader and same destination folder and import options the import functionality hangs and I have to force quit Lightroom.
No folder permissions have been changed.   I am the administrator and only user of this mac.   I clicked on your link above but it didn't take me anywhere with an answer.  I have even tried copying the pics from the SD card to my hard drive with same result.
I have got to find a solution to this problem -- I didn't spend thousands of dollars on a new computer and cameras just to get stuck at this point.  I don't want to abandon Lightroom and seek alternate software, but I will if this issue can't be solved.
Obviously I'm not the only one having this problem.

  • What are the critical points to validate whether the client uses PP or not?

    Hi,
We are woking for a project which involves more than 80 SAP instances (80 clients), and with in the same instance we have more than one country (e.g: client 100 may have 5 countries india, srilanka, bangaladesh, china and singapore). Now our challenge is to validate which are the countries using SAP PP Shop floor control activities (Creation of Production orders, settlement etc...). Please list the critical points against which we can validate. Hope my question is clear. Any clarification required please reply to this thread. Expecting quick response from the experts. Thank you.
Note: I have tried using "workscheduling view" of material master, COOIS report etc.., still i did not get clear validation. I would appreciate if experts provide technical validation points.

    Dear Krishnan,
First thing is you have to know whether client is using
    Discrete , REM or PP-PI
From Discrete point of View ( Configurations )
    Check in
OPJH, OPL8, OPKJ, OPK4, OPKP ( whether for plant & order type combination parameters are maintained are not )
    Coming to REM
check in OSP2, whether REM profile settings are maintained for the plants
    Coming to Master data
just refer the below link & check give the plant as input

  • Unable to load icm printer profiles in Lightroom 5

I am unable to access correctly loaded RGB printer profiles in Lightroom 5.
In the print module when color management profile "Other" is selected no loaded profiles appear; and Lightroom usually freezes.
Using Photoshop v6 on same computer I can access all loaded printer profiles. I have reloaded LR5.
Does anyone have a solution or work-around for this problem?

The "Include Display Profiles" checkbox is at the bottom of the list that comes up if you click "Other..." in the Lightroom Print Job panel. If this is the point where Lightroom freezes you won't get to it of course. So then the question is what prevents Lightroom from loading that list?  Maybe someone else has suggestions, so hang on for a while.
Anyway, whatever the extension, the point is that the profile in question has to be the correct one for that particular printer/paper/ink combination. Apologies if this is stating the obvious, but you don't really have a choice between several, you just pick the right one. They install with the printer driver and are named for instance "Epson <model> Premium Semigloss" and so on, different profiles for different paper types.
Or you can make your own profiles. I believe the ColorMunki, for one, lets you create printer profiles as well as monitor profiles.

  • HP Pavilion Elite e9220f crashing repeatedly after critical update

    HP Pavilion Elite e9220f, Windows 7 64-bit.
Crashed on 5/9/13, wouldn't reboot. Freezed with blinking cursor in upper left corner of blank screen after HP splash screen.
Changed HD from RAID to IDE mode in BIOS and Windows started but crashed with blue screen on trying to install the IDE controller driver automatically after start-up. Blue screen crash codes indicated the hard drive controller was the source.
System Restore lists several critical updates for Windows over the last few weeks. I ran System Restore in safe mode to 5/4/13 restore point, then rebooted to safe mode for confirmation of restore, and it then booted normally and successfully installed the IDE controller driver, but then crashed again as soon as subsequent critical updates were reinstalled. Disabling Windows Update via services.msc then restoring to 5/4/13 again finally stabilized the system, able to use normally without crashing.
To try to solve the underlying problem preventing further critical updates and allow me to turn on Windows Update again, I found the firmware update on HP's site for the hard drive, WDC WD10EADS-65M2B0, from version B0 to BX. However, after updating the firmware to BX, Windows now crashes upon starting even still at restore point 5/4/13 or even all the way back to 4/28/13, and now before it can even attempt to install the IDE controller. In otherwords, updating the firmware made it worse. The system is again unsable.
    Anyone else having this problem?
    JoEbYX

I agree that it is inexplicable, if that was indeed the case.
If the PC has a single drive, then it makes zero sense to use RAID mode. RAID is an acronym which stands for redundant array of inexpensive disks. The use of any form of RAID (0-5) requires a minimum of two physical hard disks.
AHCI and IDE are the only viable options with a single hard disk.
Did you make a backup or image of the hard disk?
    What is the installed OS?
You will need to  enable the SATA msAHCI driver in the operating system as this Microsoft document explains. Use the Microsoft Automated Fixit on the document to resolve the issue. It will take care of the registry change required. Afterwards you will need to enter the BIOS and verify the SATA mode is set to AHCI and if not, change it to AHCI before the next boot into Windows.

  • Can't Edit in CS6 from Lightroom

Im using Mac OS X 10.9.5Since the recent Lightroom Update I cannot edit any of my pictures previously catalogued in Lightroom 5. I uninstalled and reinstalled CS6 and tried CC 2014 but the problem persists.
Ill try uninstalling and reinstalling Lightroom though I suspect this won't work.
    Any suggestions??Photoshop Lightroom

I now find that even after reloading CS6 and Lightroom, and reimporting files - I still can't edit in Photoshop - what a mess! The photoshop filelds are no longer greyed out when I select -> Photo -> edit in photoshop - however when I click this item, photoshop does not open! (CS6)
Bridge works OK and it seems I may have to abandon Lightroom and use Bridge instead. I used to like Adobe - not any more!

  • Lightroom 2.1 Crashes When Naming A new Catalog

If I attempt to begin a new catalog, the default folder area pops up and I place a name for the new catalog in the provided box. Once I hit the enter key, LR 2.1 closes completely.
If I double click the icon to bring LR back up, nothing happens. If I bring up the windows task manager, lightroom.exe is now listed twice in the process section.
Select them both, hit end process, and re-click the icon, it starts with the catalog name I had just entered.
    Any suggestions?

Now I have noticed other programs, if shut down (such as spysweeper or registry mechanic) will not restart unless they are stopped as a process.
It is frustrating to deal with vista the last 2 years. Should have stayed with XP Professional.
As for firewalls, no change if I switch to the Windows version or not.
I know now to start the task manager and leave it in the tray while I work on the web site.

  • When adobe will provide a good touch user interface for lightroom?

We are in 2013 and any new windows 8 is for touch users. Even working in a desktop mode, a photographer can have a surface pro computer and won't be able to use lightroom without a mouse.
Any plans to bring bigger icons on lightroom?
    Thanks in advance.

it is interristing that all the answers appear to be very conservative about the interface.
I am a big fan of lightroom, so i won't consider criticizing my favourite software.
I also know that win 8 and touch devices are still confidential today.
But i believe this concept will grow up.
Probably, we will have to wait until apple and their mac goes into touch computers ways. At this moment, probably, adobe will decide to follow the move and change their UI in both system at the same time instead of having two different UI depending on your sytem.
But you have to consider that productive touch devices are going to be the reference. Who wants to spend 1000 $ on a non touch device when the new intel processors will allow as much battery time as an ipad. Look at the new air book. 11 hours of autonomy. When win 8 machines will be out there, a ,photographer on the filed will probably want to have one of those. and enjoy a touch UI with lightroom.
Or, obviously, i am completley wrong.
Or again, it is too soon for a lightroom with touch UI on a productive machine.
PS: i won't be a client for a "lightroom app" with very light use. like photoshop touch or anything alike.

  • Cannot open lightroom, says trial membership is over though I have been using it and paying for it

I purchased photoshop and lightroom as a download, now when I access the program it goes to a trial membership page

You uninstall it the same way as you would uninstall any other application, there's nothing special that needs to be done other than you need first to logout of the Creative Cloud from the CC Desktop Application.
On Windows use the Control Panel>Programs & Features, select "Adobe Lightroom 5" in the list and click on the Uninstall button which appears at the top of the list when you have selected the program.
On OSX, drag the Adobe Photoshop 5.app from the Applications folder to the Trash.
Once uninstalled, restart your system, open the CC Desktop App, Login to your Adobe account, then on the Apps tab you should see Lightroom 5 with the "Install" button. Click on it and the install process will commence. Once complete, you're good to go.

  • Can't authorize Facebook exports from Lightroom

Ever since the sun shined and Lightroom 3.0 came out, I have been using its fabulous publish servces.  I haven't had any trouble with my Facebook connection until I rebuilt my computer and reinstalled Lightroom.  Doing so required me to reauthorize Lighroom as a valid Facebook app.  Now, no matter how I try to do this, Lightroom tells me I "Can't Save Changes: Not Authorized."  I have seen several frustrated web posters with the same problem, but no solutions.
I have tried blowing away the preferences file, creating a new catalog, trying to authorize in Windows safe mode, setting my default browser to Internet Explorer, holding my breath, crossing my fingers.  No joy.
Does anyone know how to fix this??

I now find that even after reloading CS6 and Lightroom, and reimporting files - I still can't edit in Photoshop - what a mess! The photoshop filelds are no longer greyed out when I select -> Photo -> edit in photoshop - however when I click this item, photoshop does not open! (CS6)
