ABAP MDM Connection Pool

Hi,
I'm trying to write a report that extracts information from MDM. Everytime it's called, it has to establish a new connection to MDM where the hand-shake takes about 20-30 secs.
I was wondering if ABAP MDM Connection Pooling exist.
In Java MDM, you can configure J2EE with connection pool, so that you can reuse a connection rather than re-establishing a new connection on every call.
I've read Thomas Jung's WIKI on "How do you implement a MDM Connection Help Class?", however I cannot reuse this class. The static attribute in the class is not persisted.
Did I do something wrong?
I tried turning it into a shared memory root class, however it complains about an object reference still exist and would not allow me to do "dettach_commit( )".
Don't know any other ways to store the connection handle in memory.
Export/Import, SPA/GPA are not OO friendly.

Thanks for your reply, it is good to confirm my understanding of the ABAP API connection.
For your interest, I have changed part of the connection code to increase the speed of the connection significantly.
Firstly to clarify, the connection from the ABAP stack to MDM is actually quite fast.
Upon the first call, the method CL_MDM_PROVIDER_SP04_PL03->_LOAD_FIELD_INFORMATION is called which reads the META-DATA from MDM for every table and every field. This could normally take 1 minute in our system landscape. I've changed to code to buffer the meta-data.
In a production/stable environment, it is unlikely for the META-DATA to change rapidly. Hence reading this on every connection is a waste of time.
This could be useful only if we are in implementation phase where this changes all the time.
1) In transaction MDMAPIC, I've added the ABAP implementation for MDM Version Support as my own MDM provider class ZSP04_PL03 with provider type ZCL_MDM_PROVIDER_SP04_PL03.
ZCL_MDM_PROVIDER_SP04_PL03 is a copy of CL_MDM_PROVIDER_SP04_PL03.
2) In ZCL_MDM_PROVIDER_SP04_PL03, the method LOADFIELD_INFORMATION is changed to read from buffer first before calling MDM. If the buffer is empty, it will read from MDM and store result into buffer etc.
I'm storing the information in a transparent table at the moment.
I buffer the three class attributes:
- mt_field_meta_data,
- mt_mdm_field_meta_data,
- mt_field_code2id_map.
As MT_FIELD_META_DATA is a complex structure (i.e. tables within table), I had to split it up into many different tables.

    I'm playing around with the MDM ABAP API, and I found the performance a bit disappointing.
    I followed the guide "How To identify master data records using SAP MDM 5.5 ABAP API's" and wrote a test program.
    The program makes a connection, triggers an MDM query, and disconnects.

    Further to my investigation, I found out the most expensive code lies in
    CL_MDM_PROVIDER_SP04_PL03->IF_MDM_CORE_SERVICES~QUERY

    Within this method loadfield_information, it rips all the table and structure information

    Is there anyway to speed this up?
    Why aren't these data cached? (They don't change so often in a production environment)
    I also found a shared memory class CL_MDM_METADATA_ACCESS but it is not used anywhere.
    No shared memory area relevant is delivered by SAP as well.
    Any ideas?

    you're welcome.
    I'm not sure how the Connection Pooling to MDM is really done by the ABAP APIs as I'm unfortunately not an API developer but just use the API for my programms.
    What I learned during this process is that the repository meta data (meaning table descriptions, and so on) have to be loaded at least once for each connection. This makes sense because a repository can always be changed manually by any user. And I don't think that it would be faster to hold the meta data persistent in the ABAP layer because then you would need to compare the ABAP available meta information with the current meta information of the repository. This could take even longer.
    I've solved this "issue" in a way that I really rely on the connection because a single connection is very stable. So I call the "CONNECT" only once in the very beginning, run through my coding and the very last step is the "DISCONNECT". As long as a connection is available, the meta data is cached in the API layer (at least this is the case for SP05).

    Hi Experts,
    we have one application with JCo mechanism. For this application,
    we are using one properties file, which holds ABAP connection information. From this connection information(sapconn.props), we created connection pool and fetching data from the back end. Now my requirement is, instead of this properties file, we want to use one SLD, from this i would like to fetch connection information and establish a connection pool. How can we implement this one...?
    Is there any API to read the ABAP connection informaation from visual admin (JCo RFC provider) ?

    When we go to http://hostname:50100/webdynpro/dispatcher/sap.com
    we can see RFC CC_RFC_LookUp and MAx connection parameter set to 1.
    Rest of RFCs are having maximum connections as 20.
    Please let us know what is the procedure to change MAX connection parameter for this
    particular RFC CC_RFC_LookUp and which parameter we need to change and where should we find
    this parameter?

    I have gone through VA nodes ... could please mention which node i need to make this pareameter changes.
    Please note : currently all other JCO pool RFCs are set to Max connections 20 .
    But this particular RFC CC_RFC_LookUp under JCO pool tab shows
    max connections set to only 1.
    Please let me know where in VA i will find this parameter?

    I have not faced this problem before but one thing that I would like to sugesst is to put a check at each step using "try/catch" like, when you get ConnectionFactory object, when you set the ConnectionSpec, when you get INative ojbect etc.

    Just check the compatibility of the MDM4J APIs and the MDM Server you are trying to connect.

    is there any Java API documentation to the Connection Pooling available? It is not listed in the SP03-Docu, but the classes exist. I don't know how to use them, so any help would be appreciated.
    Ah, and the Weblogs by Uri Katz are good, but not applicable in my case. I would like to mount a standalone HTTP server on my computer managing the connections to MDM.

    This program up / downloads from / to a local dataset
    all the components of an ABAP - i.e TEXTS, the entire CUA
    including statuses and menus, DYNPROS and source code.
    Program documentation and variants are not handled.
    INCLUDED programs are automatically handled both on upload
    or download. INCLUDE selection can be excluded or generic
    e.g only handle INCLUDES starting with ZIN*
    INCLUDES within INCLUDES alos handled.
    The only restriction is on UPLOAD the INCLUDED programs must come
    from the same directory as the main program.
    On Download of course the ABAP must exist in the library.
    Note for LINUX and BATCH users
    This program was originally designed as a one off tool for
    getting ABAPS etc from a SAP R2 (IBM MVS mainframe system) into
    an R3 test system minimising the need for a large amount of
    mainframe sysprogs (anybody remember what they were !!) time
    and support to say nothing of access problems from TSO /JES2 /
    SAP R2. At that time network connections were patchy and the
    transport systems largely incompatable and not very reliable.
    This program was originally designed as a one off tool for

    be changed to %. On upload the % should be changed back to /
    again. This change still needs to be implemented.
    If you don't use the / in the abap name then this is not a problem.
    If file to be uploaded is in rel 3 format then names are only 8
    bytes long.
    program uses 3 datasets per abap
    1) abapname.eee source, dynpr logic, texts, CUA stuff
    2) abapname.hhh dynpr header
    3) abapname.fff dynpro fields.
    because of varying lengths and contents 3 data sets are used. The
    complexity of combining all these to 1 data set would make the
    program far too complex.
    NOTE: This version of the program can only be used on
    release 4.0 or higher. Once an ABAP has been converted
    to rel 4.0 it cannot be converted back to rel 3.0
    on a release 3/3.1 system. Release 4 CUA tables
    are different. Use release 3 version of this program
    for releases 3.0 and 3.1. Available on SAPFANS website.
    Note that data to be uploaded must have been previously downloaded
    by this program (any version since rel 2.0) - except for Initial
    Load -- see end of these comments.
    Dynpros and CUA statuses have changed since rel 3.1
    This program will handle rel 3.1 format on upload but will
    download in rel 4.0 format. To upload 3.1 format specify an 'X'
    in the rel3 parameter.
    If you have downloaded components in rel 4.0 format and you
    want to re-load to a 3.1 system you will have to load
    the source via standard upload and re-create dynpros and the CUA
    manually.
    As names can now be longer than 8 characters you can only
    use this program if the SAP front end (SAPGUI) supports
    long file names (WIN 95/98 or WIN NT). Windows 3.x will not
    work as the underlying DOS system cannot handle long file names.
    UPLOAD function and DOS directory.
    When an ABAP is selected for UPLOAD then the DOS
    directory is read into a table. A file called ABAP.BAT is created,
    and down loaded to the 'C' drive and executed.
    This file executes a DOS DIR command and pipes the output
    into a dataset which is then uploaded into an internal
    table on SAP.
    Note on running DOS commands from ABAP
    The first time this procedure is executed you will see a DOS window
    which you will have to close manually. To get round this
    use windows explorer to select the file ABAP.BAT and then
    right mouse click on the file name. Select the
    properties window. From this click the CLOSE on EXIT box. This
    will then automatically close the DOS function after it has
    executed. (Windows restriction).
    The DOS function has not been tested using Windows 2000 so
    it might not work. OK on W95,W98,WME and Windows NT (No Thanks)
    If INCLUDE programs are wanted on UPLOAD only the specified
    directory is searched.
    Instead of entering path name manually you can click on
    the path parameter. Because of Windows restriction you will
    have to select ANY file in the relevant directory.
    The path will then be copied on to the selection screen.

  • RFC_FAILURE affects Connection Pool

    Using VB.NET (2003) with .Net Connector 2.0.
    An intermittent problem causes a RFC Call to fail, and an exception is raised in the .NET code. The Exception message is:

    Is there any way to prevent the problem causing problems with Connection Pool ?
    Is there any way of removing a “faulty” connection from the pool ? (NB Close and Dispose on the connection does not help)

    The application is a Windows service - so I don't want to lose any connections. I assume that closing the connection (and not returning it) will affect the number of available connections in the pool(?).
    I'm using async. RFC call, and the problem is detected in the callback function when the EndRFCCall is performed.

    I have changed the code as suggest so that the connection is closed, disposed but <u>not</u> returned. This cleared the RFC_INVALID_HANDLE errors, but the main problem of a corrupted connection persists.

    problem is if DB fails, the connection pool fails, and will not restart. If I run a java weblogic.Admin EXISTS_POOL command, it says the pool doesnt exist.
    If i run a RESET_POOL, using the system user password, it comes back with:
    Exception in thread "main" javax.naming.AuthenticationException. Root exception is java.lang.Securi

    I have test on reserved set (and dual as the table).

    Hi Will,
    When you bring up the server, if the database is down, your connection pools
    will not come up if you have an initial capacity greater than 0. This is a
    known issue and the workaround for this is to set the initial capacity to
    zero so the pool comes up even when the database is down, then make sure you
    set the capacity increment to the value that you like your initial capacity
    to be and have the TestConnectionOnReserve to true.

    Upon server startup, I get the following result:
    <Nov 7, 2001 4:18:32 PM CST> <Error> <JDBC> <Cannot startup connection pool "ora
    cleTrufflePool" No suitable driver>
    I assumed it was a path problem, but in the startWebLogic.cmd script I've set the PATH and CLASSPATH variables to the same as in a separate command window that can successfully dbping the Oracle db.
    One thing I completely don't understand is what the URL value should be for the pool, and I can't see a pattern in the examples and docs I've found on this. Here are my pool settings, at any rate:
    Name: oracleTrufflePool
    URL: myOracleServerName
    Driver Classname: weblogic.jdbc.oci.Driver
    Properties:
    user=user
    password=password
    server=myOracleServerName
    ACLName: user
    Password: password
    As you can see, I also don't understand whether the Oracle user name and password must be duplicated in the Properties section, or should they really only be listed in the ACLName and Password fields (in the Server Console UI)?

    Hi. The issue is that the URL you give is not the URL the driver (weblogic.jdbc.oci.Driver)
    wants. The URL should be "jdbc:webLogic:oci". The properties user, password and server
    will be passed to the driver for conenction attempts. The ACL is for who gets to use the
    pool, and the other password entry is only if you need the DBMS password to be encrypted
    in the XML. If so, set that password value, and don't have it in the driver properties.

    You need to ensure that the ORACLE_HOME is set and PATH has

    I installed the following without any warnings or errors:

    I will refer to the steps I did after the installations
    1) In the .profile file of the OS I add the following:

    I tried to use different jar files. I used ojdbc6dms.jar and ojdbc14.jar.
    I also copied the jar files in the $GLASSFISH_HOME/domains/domain1/lib/ext directory as some people suggested. Still no luck. I keep getting the same error messages in the server.log
    Can anybody help me out or point me to the right direction.

    The error is in the URL. It was in front of my eyes and I couldn't see the error. I skipped the ':' before the '@' when I created the pool. It is working fine now.
