Ability to Disable F5 Backlight LED on HP Spectre x360

Hello Experts, Is there a way to disable the persistent backlight under the F5 key on HP Spectre x360 notebooks?  TO CLARIFY, I'M NOT ASKING HOW TO DISABLE THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE F5 KEY OR ANY OTHER FUNCTION KEYS.  I just would like to know how to TURN OFF the PERMANENT light underneath the F5 KEY.  It is extremely bright.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Windows 7 - Disable Keyboard Backlight?

Hey. I've recently purchased a new 17" Macbook Pro and managed to install Windows 7 x64 Ultimate through Boot Camp 3.1. Overall cool, but... has anyone managed to disable keyboard backlight on in Windows? It's just too aggressive, and jumps from time to time even if I set it to minimum. As to me, VERY annoying. Why I can't disable it? All I can do is minimize keyboard backlight level, but it jumps up again soon. Just any help is highly appreciated.

interesting coincidence just registered to ask same question. yes the same here man. macbook air with bootcamp 3.0 is `mr. too bright keyboard`))) i'm searching for workaround to turn off auto adjustment. yes bad auto adjustment logic in bootcamp is the reason. but no workaround yet found for windows 7 64bit.

  • Keyboard backlight LED driver circuit power transistor identification.

    HP Envy 14 Beats, Model LR198AAR, Win 7, x64
My LED backlight for the keyboard had a bad resistor and shorted the circuit, blowing the SMD power transistor. Trying to identify it so I can replace it. I have a new keyboard and I Googled the markings, but for some small devices, the numbers on it aren't enough to identify it unless you have manufacturer and product line data.  The PCB component number is 03009.

I thought I would follow up on this, since I finally found a solution (I don't know if it's the correct solution, but it works for me). The cause of the problems was indeed the ambient light sensor (ALS) sending acpi events that were not having any effect (I saw this using acpi_listen from the acpid package).
So, with acpid installed and started in systemd, I changed the /etc/acpi/handler.sh to add the following cases:
    video/brightnessup)
    echo $(expr $(cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness) + 1) > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
    video/brightnessdown)
    echo $(expr $(cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness) - 1) > /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
Now the ALS can change the backlight brightness and all is well. Also, since I don't actually like the ALS, I did put some tin foil and tape in front of it so that it will always register a dark room. (So far I have not found any way to disable the ALS programatically outside of Windows)
Do note that I don't have acpi_osi or acpi_backlight set to anything in the kernel boot parameters, since using acpi_backlight=vendor doesn't work right as I mentioned in my original post.
Hope this might help someone in the future.

  • Chromebook keyboard backlight leds

I have learned a great deal by reading the wiki and searching this forum.  One issue I am still trying to understand is how the keyboard leds on my Chromebook Pixel can be controlled.  Now that chromeos_laptop is built into the kernel, I would have suspected a /sys/class/leds/chromeos directory to exist, allowing me control of the keyboard backlight.  I can confirm chromeos_laptop is being loaded with lsmod.    I also built linux-mainline (3.14rc7) from AUR (which is amazing btw) and after booting from this kernel leds/chromeos directory was still missing. Any advice?

On my machine (Macbook), the file in /sys/class/leds is a symlink to /sys/devices/platform/... perhaps your just missing the link and the actual file is somewhere else. You could perhaps try a search through sys using the find utility e.g.
    find /sys -name '*backlight'

  • Ability to disable Backups / Uploads

    Current situation:
Upload Policies are mandatory. Therefore no matter what upload time you define, you'll have backups for all machines in any case.
    Feature request:
Ability to create a "No Backup" or "No Upload" Policy.
    Use Case:
For example if you have kiosk machines or teaching class rooms that just need to have an image and some app layers, you don't really care about backups. Once you're finished with a training or if a machine brakes, then you just re-provision the Base-Layer.

Here's an empty policy xml file. You can import this into your Mirage Server by using the Wanova.Server.Cli.Exe from C:\Program Files\Wanova\Mirage Server and using the AddUploadPolicy command. The key here is the directory path in the unprotected area. Hope that helps.

  • End user ability to disable/enable video capabilities

Customer is using Cisco IP phones (79XX) and CUVA for video.
When they don't want to use video for a specific call, they just turn off video at the beginning of the call, but in this case they still get a black screen.
Is there any way to prevent this black screen from appearing when the call is just an audio call?
If the only way is disabling video capabilities in the device, is there any way in which the end user can do it without contacting administrator?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Apple:please update itunes with ability to disable music store permenanty

Although I believe you when you say you are not storing data on your users, I still would feel more comfortable not having the music store open unless I open it. I should not be connected to you everytime I open itunes , please include the option to disable this default. I should never be connected to the internet just because I want to listen to my own music.
    Scott Bass

My issue isn't so much with Apple seeing what songs I'm playing, and it's cool that you can just turn the feature off. After all, I'm a loyal Apple customer who regularly buys songs from iTMS and even computers and stuff from Apple Store (I own 3 Macs, 1 Airport Express, and 1 iPod).
My concern is this third-party involvement:
    http://since1968.com/article/155/omniture-itunes
I don't like Apple sending any info of mine to a 3rd party for some nefariously furtive reason, regardless of how well it's legally bulwarked in their EULA.
G4 AGP Dual 1.2 GHz; Powerbook G4 15-inch; Mac Mini; Airport Express; 3G iPod   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Trying to upgrade AGP to Tiger...boom!

  • Mac OS X still does not have a retina-ready icon for the disabled keyboard backlight. Anyone noticed it?

When your keyboard illumination is locked due to the ambient light and you try to adjust it, you see the grey icon hovering the screen. You may notice that this icon is pixelized meaning that it was not updated for retina displays. Since June 2012.

I've been doing some research, and it appears that Google Chrome may be the way to go. I use to really love Firefox, but it has become bloatware, eating up way too much memory. So sad, Firefox was the one that freed me from Internet Explorer and Safari.

  • IMac backlight OR LED Screen Panel Problem.

So for about 6 months now i've noticed these 'smudge marks' people have been talking about behind the glass screen in my iMac 27" which is a late 2011 model (about 13/14 months old) and was bought new fro the iMac store.
Then about 6 weeks ago i started having problems with what i thought was the backlight. After 5 minutes or so of being on my iMac, the screen would all dim a little and sometimes flicker for a fw seconds until it halted at a certain level of brightness (which i couldnt make brighter with the brightness volume buttons.) It became more frequent over the weeks and some times went completely black but i waited to take it into Apple because i live in Leeds UK and i knew there was a new Apple store being opened (Thursday 21st March 2013). Normally i would have to travel to the Meadowhall Centre (Sheffield).
So sure enough, i went in on the open day and they took in my iMac telling me it was the backlight. They quoted me £109 including VAT whih i was willing to pay. I had a phonecall today 25/3/13 from the store telling me they had replaced the backlight and the problem was still occouring so they would need to replace the LED Panel. I was also told this would cost me over £300 + VAT! No way can i afford to pay that and i'm probably not alone when i say it took me long enough to save for the iMac itself! Theres obviously a serious issue with the backlights and LED Panels of iMacs dating back since before the iMac models first came about. I don't smoke, one of the 'Geniuses' in the Apple store even commented on how well it had been looked after, there are no radiators near my studio, it is very well ventillated and isnt over used, so this obviously isnt a case of not looking after it propely. I don't understand why i have to pay over £300 if this is a MAJOR fault with apples product and not mine. Tomorrow i have to pick up my iMac (still broken) and simply work with the problem which i'm pretty sure soon, will be almost impossible if the screen continues to go black and fail on me.
    Recap:
    My questions are these.
What is causing the problems with the iMac backlight/LED Panel?
Why have Apple not done anything about this fault since it's been going on years now?
Why should i have to pay over £300 to fix APPLES FAULT.
And finally, has anyone here won an argument similar to this that were out of warranty and not had to pay?
    Thanks,
    Billy.

    Hi Billy, sad, isn't it!?
Some have paitiently worked their way through Applecare to get to a point where you can ask to speak to a customer service rep, & some have gotten satisfaction that way.
On the LCD, I wonder if it isn't that LCD cable problem...

  • Group Policy to disable ability to turn off wireless networking in Windows 8.1 Update

I am wanting to disable the ability to turn off wireless networking in our Windows 8.1 Update clients using Group Policy. We are a school that runs classroom management software enabling the teachers to view what the students have on their screens.
Students just switch off their wireless to avoid detection. I have searched the Group Policy listings and can't find anything.
    Thanks.

    Hi  GeoffAUS,
I can’t find a direct group policy to disable the users’ ability to turn off the wireless network in Windows 8.1.
If we just disable the display of wireless connection, we will need to additionally disable the ability that disabling the driver in device manager.
We could try the workaround to use UAC to control the wireless connection.
Go to Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policy->Security Options, and set the option
User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for standard users.
Please make sure the computer automatically connect to Wireless.

  • 865PE Neo2LS: Disable Chipset LED?

Is it possible to disable the chipset LED's on the MSI 865PE Neo2 LS motherboard? They're nice and all and I bought a clearside case to look in once in a while but the lights get annoying after a while.
I looked in the BIOS options and I can't find it, it's either right in front of my eyes or not there, this is the same for the manual, it's either in there and I didn't see it or it's not there at all.

    It's not there at all.
The LEDs blink whenever the fan is powered, so to ditch the lightshow, you need to ditch the fan. If you are not into overclocking, it will work perfectly fine without the fan, but keep the heatsink properly mounted.
Just remember to set aside the fan and the screws - you may need it in the future - in case of RMA  :P
