Ability to log activity for Mail.app?

Having a major problem trying to establish an IMAP account with Mail.app. I am getting generic errors and thus haven't found anything on this board or google.
Is there a way to trace or log a mail account setup? I do see a why to trace mail activity via terminal but I am looking for something that can troubleshoot the setup issue I am having
Thanks

Open /Applications/Utilities/Console and do either File > Open Console Log, or File > Open System Log, or both, so that Console displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
Apparently, you can tell Mail to provide detailed log information as described in the following article (I haven’t tried it myself):
Enable detailed Mail.app logging options
Also, Mail comes with a Turn On Logging AppleScript that I haven’t tried either, but that was discussed some time ago in the following thread:
MAIL LOG???

  • How to enable logging for mail.app in Mountain Lion

I am at my wits end trying to figure this out....
Does anyone have a clue how to enable the logging for mail.app under Mountain Lion?
In the past, you could open up Console and click on Console.log and see the logging of mail. Under mountain Lion, there is no more console.log. I cannot figure out how to enable it.
I have tried to run the AppleScript of "Turn On Logging" but the script errors out under Mountain Lion.
Does anyone know how to do this or a better way, maybe a tool or something that can help you troubleshoot mail.app issues?
    Thanks in advanced

    Hello,
I have a similar problem. The script "Turn on Logging.scpt" runs without error, but I do not see any socket logging. I only get two messages, which I also get when I start mail without the script by just clicking the mail.app icon in the dock. The Messages are:
    1/10/13 3:43:32.618 PM Mail[11276]: Using V2 Layout
1/10/13 3:43:36.388 PM Mail[11276]: *** -[IADomainCache init]: IA domains cache is out of date.
    Any help would be appreciated

  • How to find add-ons for mail.app

    D'oh!
Am I missing something incredibly obvious about App Store?
I want to find all add-ons -- worktogethers for mail.app.  How?
Example:   I found a product called MessageFont which may have a similar function to the one I am seeking.  Its web page is marked "Available on App Store". Sure, I can find Messagefont on App Store, either by overall search, or alphabetical arrangement of Productivity Apps.    So, I guess that the app I'm seeking MIGHT also be in this category.  But there are currently 3065 other apps in that category.   Does the Search box at upper left apply to the currently visible selection?  Maybe, sort of.  But searching for "mail.app" or "mail" don't seem to do what I want.  Searching for "apple mail" returns only 7 hits, including my example, MessageFont, but the hits also include OS X Server, and b) It seems unlikely there are only 5 additional add-ons -- worktogethers for mail.app.
Bonus question:  What I'm looking for is a utility that makes it easier to reply to formatted email messages in mail.app, by making visible --and prefereably, supporting removal of-- block structures.   It seems that block structures (e.g. blockquotes, perhaps others) interfere with opening vertical space into which  interspersed reply text can be entered.
    TIA

To what are you referring when you ask about "add-ons to Premiere 13" (assumed you mean Adobe Premiere Element 13)? On what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 13 running?
Premiere Elements has not come with a Content Disc or offered Content download from an Adobe web site since Premiere Elements 10.
If "add-ons" to you mean Content download...DVD Templates, Movie Themes, Clip Art, etc....then most of that is going to come from downloading
Content from within the opened project. There is a limited amount of content that comes complete as part of the installation.
A description of this process is fully described

  • Sobriety check for Mail.app

    Hi everyone,
I've been asked at work if it is possible to add this functionality to Mail.app, in a similar vein to what Gmail has recently added to their service.
In a nutshell, what I need to create is an alert dialog that pops up when a user clicks the send button in Mail that allows them to confirm they want the message to be sent. It's not really a sobriety check (at least I hope not) but really a chance for an employee to avoid mistakes in their email message before it goes out.
At this point I'd just like to know if it's feasible before I go down this route and if anyone has any advice for an AS noob looking to do this. Bonus points if you know whether it's possible to add a modifier to the Send button to bypass the script.
    Thanks much!

Not directly - at least not via AppleScript.
Mail.app supports AppleScripts for scanning incoming mail messages. There is no support for AppleScript on outgoing messages.
It is possible to write Mail.app plugins, but they're not well documented (search for 'Mail.app plugin' for an idea) and requires an understanding of Objective-C.
The last option I can think of is to not use Mail.app's automatic send/receive. Instead using a stay-open AppleScript to periodically get mail and check for messages in the outbox. If it finds any it posts the question then sends the message(s). The problem with this approach, though, is that it's far from foolproof (the user can send the message manually by enabling automatic mail sending).

  • PGP for Mail.app?

Alright, I've been loooking for a while and I can't seem to find a good encryption solution for Mail.app
Apple's Mail help file mentions something vague about how mail does support pgp if the enctyption is hidden in they keychain, but mentions no way of doing this. Is there some easy way of implementing pgp in mail that I'm missing? The best solution Google easily offers is GPGMail (http://www.sente.ch/software/GPGMail/English.lproj/GPGMail.html), but that seems slightly sketchy and I'd like to do encryption the Apple Way™ (if there is a way, that is)
Black MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.0 GHz 1g ram

There's no reason not to use the GPGMail plugin for Mac OS X; it's been around for years and it works; nothing "sketchy" about it. You will also need to download and install the GNU Privacy Guard (a.k.a. MacGPG) to make it encrypt and decrypt messages.
Or, you could get a free personal email certificate to sign and encrypt your mail, but it will expire after 1 year and then you'd have to get a new one. If that's the method you prefer, check this link for instructions. Go directly to the link where it says Thawte: Personal Email Certificates and start reading.

  • Skins-Themes for Mail.app

I may have posted this before but got no responses... trying again.
I am using Thunderbird now, but mail.app is finally looking attractive. Is thre any way to change the theme for mail.app? It's "mission critical" for me to us a dark theme.. I can't face a white screen all day long..
if there is no theme option for mail.app. where do I go in apple.com to post feature requests?

"duh" of course.. but since I never open mail.app I didn't think of that.. .thanks
btw.. it just takes you back here to:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/mail.html
and if you search "feedback" you get all the links to send in feature requests for all the apps...

  • Am I too fast for Mail.app?

    *Simplified version*: http://trials.sent.com/problem.jpg
    *Detailed version:*
So here I am composing away in Mail.app. I suddenly decide that I need to select a prior portion of my typed text and replace it with another phrase.
So I select the text, and I start typing my replacement phrase without pressing delete. This used to work fine, and the portion that I wanted replaced would get replaced with the new intended phrase.
The problem? After I select a prior portion of the typed text, and press delete (or start typing with my replacement), I'm now seeing additional words (those that were present right after the deleted words) automatically selected by Mail.app.
This is bad, because if I'm typing away, I've already lost unintended words. Am I too fast for Mail.app? Should I slow down?
Is this just me? I've had this problem for over almost a year now (with my old macbook), and new macbook pro.

This exact problem has happened to me on my Late 2008 MBP a number of times.
After I select something, I delete it (cut it, type another letter, whatever) and the text is moved appropriately, but the selected area remains. So upon the next keystroke the next few words are also deleted.
It seems to be some sort of bug. I'm not sure if its related to the trackpad, or what. I haven't made much effort to isolate and fix the problem either. Perhaps we should both submit feedback to Apple about this. Your illustration depicts the problem perfectly. Would you mind if I link to it when I send in feedback?
One more thing: It's not limited to Mail.app on my machine. I get it in Pages and TextEdit as well, for sure. Perhaps it is limited to Cocoa applications; I'm not sure if I've ever got it in Word or Appleworks.

  • I already have an Apple ID and I want to log into the mail app, but the mail app is asking me if I want to add an account, not log in. How do I log into an already exsisting account?

I already have an Apple ID that works, but for some reason my iPod Touch logged me out of the mail app. I want to log back in, but when I try to log in, it says "this account has already been added". The app will only let me sign up for a new ID, but I want to log in to the mail app to an already exsisting ID. Help?

Just what account are you trying to add? The iCloud mail account automaticaly gets added for the account used on the iPod

  • How to get greater log detail from Mail.app in Lion (slow attachment caching)

I have an IMAP account, hosted by FuseMail, that is taking an extraordinary amount of time to catch attachments. I would say it is taking upwards of 10 minutes to cache one attachment. This is causing a side-effect in mail that it keeps spawning new threads for "Fetching new mail" which eventually makes Mail.app thread-bound and it stops responding (see image below of an example of what happened over night when I wasn't there to kill the treads).
I would like to see a more detailed trascript of the connection with this IMAP server to see if the delay is with the server or with my client. However, I have been unable to capture what I'd like to see:
If I use the Connection Doctor, turn off all other accounts and look at "Show Detail", I can see some log entries for READS and WRITES (FETCH and PEEK) but it's still difficult to see what's happening between those steps:

I just can't see enough to figure out if the problem is on my end or the FuseMail end. I have been looking around trying to figure out how to increase the debug level without much luck.
I found this about the sqlite3 db but the Envelope file is not in the same place anymore:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/56673/2007/03/mailfix.html
I also played around with the defaults but could not find anything specific to the connection/transfer/caching protocols:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=2004101603285984
I also tried the "Turn on Logging" Mail script:
    http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/ss/Troubleshooting-Apple-Mail-Using-Apple- Mails-Troubleshooting-Tools_3.htm
but if it is turning anything on in the Console, I can't see it.
    Any suggestons?

I have the same problem, some photos are not loaded completely and partly grey. This occurs only in Mail.app but not in the web interface of the email provider. Did you find a solution, Florian? Does somebody else have a suggestion?

  • Lots of disk activity in mail.app with IMAP

Hi -- just switched to IMAP and then uploaded about 3k email messages to each of two IMAP accounts. I am also using HTTPmail. It's insane how much disk activity mail.app takes up. My disk seems like it's always being read to or written from. It's making a ton of noise all the time. When I quit mail.app, the noises stop. Is there a way to make it stop doing all these reads/writes? It cant' be good for the disk and it slows down my computer.
    Thanks!
    Nathan

Let it run. Chances are, IMAP will simmer down after it does all its processing. If this continues, it might be the result of you simply having a lot of new email. Try disabling the auto synchronization feature if it really bothers you.

  • Email's for MobileMe Account stuck in outbox for Mail.app

I upgraded to OS X Lion and have had the usual issues everyone else has had.  I've followed everyone's advice to fix them all, but now I've developed this new one.  I can't send emails anymore from my MobileMe account on my Mac.  The emails get stuck in the outbox and never send.  If I post them to the drafts in the Mail.app, and then go through Safari into the MobileMe Account, I can send the email out without a problem.  Just not from the Mail.app.  Can anyone shed some light on this one?  I'll post any data log you may need, I just don't know where to look for an answer.  Thanks.
    On a 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 MBP 15", running 10.7, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram cache.

The new update 10.7.1 resolved the issue and I am now able to send and receive emails from my MBP at home.  Please disregard this entire post series. Problem solved.

  • Configuring Proxy servers for Mail.app

Hello, and sorry if this question has been answered b4, but I couldn't find an answer... basically, I have to go thru proxy server at work to connect to the internet on my MBP, which I configured with Network Preferences (I enabled ftp, http, https, socks, and ITMS proxies.. Safari works fine, but can't get Mail to retrieve any mail from either of my mailboxes (.Mac and Gmail POP). the same prob. doesn't happen when i'm home trying to access my Mail from home (where i don't have to go thru proxy servers) using my macbook pro. the question is, how can i "tell" Mail that i'm using a proxy server?? thanks

No, actually i tried it first with socks proxy disabled, and then with it enabled, but nothing appears to be working.. it sounds a little strange to me that Mail.app doesn't contain specific settings that allow users behind company proxies to still access their mail servers, b/c for whatever reason Mail.app doesn't appear to be using the default system-wide proxy settings specfied in network preferences, which by the way Safari picked up right away and started using. well, any further help on this would be much appreciated, thanks .....

  • Monitoring, resource managing & logging application for desktop apps.

    Hi,
I am newbie as far as health checking, monitoring applicartions are concerned.
Actually we have several services written in java, & those services/apps. normally runs on differnet machines as a windows service.
I have to write a monitoring & controlling application for all those services.
    The monitoring application can atleast
    1) Start stop the services(apps) remotely
    2) Check the health of all the services running on separate machines.(heart beat)
    3) log the details provided by those application so track down if any problem occurs.
Which J2EE technology is usefull for htis, is JMX can used for standalone apps?
    -Thanks.

    HI jtahlborn,
    actually lets take an example.
LIke I have a samle java console apploication which is running in lopp & printing some thing.
Now I expose it using JMX by exposing the RMI service url.
Now I can see that the application is running using the jconsole remotely.
Now my task is to stop that application or start the application usng jcolsole or any JMX adapter UI.
I can't find any builtin start(), stop() method.are you attempting to start/stop the entire jvm, or a "service" within the jvm? the former will be tricky (or impossible via java alone), whereas the latter is exactly what jmx is designed for.
note, jboss actually accomplishes jvm restarts via jmx by running the jvm within a script which monitors the return code. a specific return code from the jvm will cause the script to loop and respawn the java process.
As far as logging is concerned.
I mean that the application running remotely send some log messsages to adapter which can be usefull to track where any request stuck. I think notification is the best way to do it.
Or JMS can be useful.jms would probably be overkill for remote logging, but certainly doable. the complication with remote logging is that you probably want to internally buffer some amount of the logs (in case the remote service seems to be hanging), so that you can access some amount of historical information. if you just log through some simple messaging protocol, when you attach to the log, you will only get new messages. like i said, it's not necessarily a trivial thing to implement, so using a 3rd party solution is preferable. for an example of what i'm talking about, check out the jboss jmx appender (adapter for log4j). although i don't think this does any buffering, it can feed another table (the AlarmTable) which can be queried for the current system status.
