Ability to make external wireless?

I have a macbook pro and I have all my iTunes music on an external hard drive so as not to use up all my macbook storage space. However, it kind of defeats the point of having a labtop if I have to keep it wired down all the time. If I get an airport express, can I plug in the hard drive to the USB port to make it wireless, or does that only work for wireless printing?

I have heard mixed reviews about the airport extreem and the time capsule. From my research I've found that they tend to go belly-up after 2 months. However I've only heard good things about the older version of the airport extreem (the one shaped like a flying saucer)
What are the suggestions on that?

  • Trying to resolve 'error 45' sparsebundle could not be created while trying to use Time Machine to back-up to an external wireless harddrive

    Hi,
I have been trying to resolve a repeated 'error 45' (Macbook Pro. sparsebundle could not be created) while trying to set up back-ups to run via Time Machine with an external wireless hard drive (Goflex Home by Seagate). I either get that message or a 'sparsebundle is already in use message. Anyone else come across this?

I've noticed that when Time Machine runs, that a  folder called Data  at /Volumes/ appears while Time Machine is trying to back up. I think it's making the sparsebundle to transfer to the Time Capsule.
Yes, exactly.  It makes one sparse bundle per Mac.
It's possible the TC's disk is too full for a new sparse bundle, or there may be some other problem.
Via the Finder, locate the existing sparse bundle (see the pink box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17 if you're not sure how to do that).  See how large it is (plus how large anything else that may be there).  If the total is very near the size of the TC, that may be the problem.
If not, a clue may be lurking in your logs.  Use the widget in #A1 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting to display the backup messages from your logs.  Locate the backup in question (probably the first one displayed), then copy and post all the messages here.

  • Group Policy to disable ability to turn off wireless networking in Windows 8.1 Update

I am wanting to disable the ability to turn off wireless networking in our Windows 8.1 Update clients using Group Policy. We are a school that runs classroom management software enabling the teachers to view what the students have on their screens.
Students just switch off their wireless to avoid detection. I have searched the Group Policy listings and can't find anything.
    Thanks.

    Hi  GeoffAUS,
I can’t find a direct group policy to disable the users’ ability to turn off the wireless network in Windows 8.1.
If we just disable the display of wireless connection, we will need to additionally disable the ability that disabling the driver in device manager.
We could try the workaround to use UAC to control the wireless connection.
Go to Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Security Settings->Local Policy->Security Options, and set the option
User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for standard users.
Please make sure the computer automatically connect to Wireless.

  • New Time Capsule - How do i make it wireless hard disk?

    Hello,
I've bought the brand new AirPort Time Capsule and i would like to make it my new wireless external harddisk.
It seems like i HAVE to use my Ethernet cable to make it work? But i'd like to make it wireless?
Don't understand it, i follow the AirPort-tool instructions, "add to an existing network" and then it says that it needs Ethernet cable?
    What am i doing wrong?
    Please help me,
    Best regards.

If we told you that....you might possibly be able to configure the TC to join your network using wireless.....and if it was successful.....and you found out that backups were going to take twice as long as normal wireless.....and that there was twice as much chance of an error occuring during a backup.....and this is the worst possible way that you could configure the TC.....
Are you still interested in trying an unsupported method to setup the Time Capsule?
Your chances that this might work are really quite slim. There is virtually no chance that it will work unless your existing wireless router is using WPA2 Personal security settings.

  • Connecting a PC with an external wireless card

I have an iMac and am connected wirelessly to the Internet through the Airport Extreme. My roommate has a new Dell Laptop with Windows XP and has been connected through ethernet to the base station. She just recently purchased an external wireless card, and we can't seem to get her connected wirelessly. When searching for available networks to join on her computer, it recognizes my network and says that it has an excellent signal, but when we type in the WEP, it doesn't do anything. It does not give us an error, and it does not connect. Any idea what we are doing wrong and what we can do to fix it?

I still can't figure it out. I unchecked the option that says "enable encryption (using WEP)" and she was immediately connected. I don't think I have a huge problem leaving the network up without a password, I'm in a small residential area. Does that just mean that neighbors would be able to connect? How far does the signal generally travel? And is there any way to see the IP addresses of people connected to this specific network?

I HAD AN EXTERNAL WIRELESS HARD DRIVE, THAT I DO NOT USE ANY MORE, BUT MY IMAC KEEPS LOOKING FOR THE HARD DRIVE AT STARTUP. IS THEIR ANY WAY TO DELETE IT, SO IT WONT KEEP LOOKING FOR IT ?

    Boot in safe mode.
Log in and see whether you still have the problem. If you don't, it's caused by one of your login items or a system modification that loads at startup or login.
If the problem isn't resolved that way, other possible causes are references in the iPhoto, iTunes, or iMovie library pointing to the server, and bookmarks in the Preview application

How do I make my wireless trackpad discoverable?

    Hello Shari BSW,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
You can take a look at the Quick Start Guide:
    Magic Trackpad Quick Start Guide
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1544/en_US/Magic_Trackpad_UG.pdf
Pg 4 has instructions for pairing and removing a paring. When the Magic Trackpad is not pared with a computer, turning it on puts it into discovery mode automatically (pg 3).

  • How do I get iTunes to recognize my external, wireless-networked hard drive (Western Digital) during installation and set-up of iTunes?

    Hello,
I'm re-installing iTunes for Windows 7 (64-bit) due to a bug that occured with the iOS7 update.  The Genius Bar recommended that I uninstall and re-install iTunes from scratch.  All of my music is located on a WD external hard drive that's connected wirelessly to my PC.  I didn't have this problem until the iOS update for iphone 5, v.7.0.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I didn't relate this; now iTunes will not install on my PC when pointed to my external, wireless-networked hard drive.  It appears that it doesn't recognize it.

  • Router address to make my wireless secure

My wireless has never been secure. I am trying to now make it secure but I can't find the IP address or router address for my Airport Express. I have checked the manual. I have searched the web. Any ideas?

When you say that you are trying to make the wireless secure, are you saying that you need to set up security and a password for the wireless network?
If yes, you need to use the AirPort Utility application for this.
It is already on your Mac, located as follows:
Applications > Utilties > AirPort Utility

  • Does Linksys Make a Wireless-N Cable Modem/Router Combo

Does Linksys make a wireless-n gateway router, a combination router and cable modem?
I currently have the combo device for wireless-g but want to upgrade to wireless-n.
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I think at the moment Linksys does not sell 802.11n gateways.
I generally recommend not to get combo devices but better get two separate devices, one simple modem and a wireless router.
    1. You have a far larger product choice for the router and they are usually cheaper.
    2. If the router dies you can still have internet through the modem directly. If the combo device dies you are offline.
    3. Less functions in a device makes simpler design and in average more stable and reliable devices.
    4. You can replace either device at any point. For instance, if you switch from cable to DSL or FTTH you can simple replace the modem. You may have to change the internet connection setting on the router but other then that you can keep the router. Likewise, if in two years from now you want to get the next-generation wireless router you can keep using your modem (if it is still fit for your internet speed)
    Just some to think about...
