Ability to Select non-Keyworded Images

Working through importing images I stamp most on import. On rare occasion this is not applicable as they are so varied.
FEATURE REQUEST:
To make sure my library has all my photos keyworded I would like the ability to click under Keywords->Non-Keyworded. This would display all photos without any keywords.
Thanks and hope this simple fix can be implemented.

Find all untagged (non keyworded) images.
1) make sure you are not using quick collection.
2) Grid mode / Library / click all photographs.
3) Select all displayed images Mac "Apple A". Then press B for a Quick collection.
4) Deselect all images.
5) Now Grid mode / keywords / and shift click all keywords.
6) select all images in the grid, Mac "Apple A". press B to deselect from the  Quick collection.
7) Grid mode / Library / select quick collection, they are all non keyworded items.
or
Shift select all Keywords in Keyword Tags.
Select All in Grid. Cmd/Ctl-A.
Go to All Photographs.
Menu/Edit/Invert Selection
You can then press 'B' to put them in Quick Collection to work on.
After Keywording each one or selection of images, while still selected do 'B' to drop them from QC as done and go to the next.

  • Lost ability to select/edit multiple images

my apologies if this is a simple question. I must have somehow disabled the feature that allowed me to select multiple images (i.e. images 1-10 within a particular project/folder) and edit them all at once. when i select multiple images and attempt to edit/stamp/rotate all at once, only the last selected image (i.e. #10) is changed. is there a feature i somehow disabled that is causing this? i never had problems with this feature prior to a few weeks ago.

    primary only was selected ...
keyboard shortcut is 'S' ... also under Edit -> Primary Only ...
third place is on the bottom control bar ...

  • Selecting Multiple Keywords for an "AND" Images Selection

When selecting images in iPhoto, one feature that I liked was the ability to fine-tune my image selection by choosing multiple Keywords. For example, I might have 50 images of Mary, either by herself or with other people, and one of the Keywords assigned to those 50 images is "Mary." I might also have 25 images of Joe, also either by himself or with other people, with one of the Keywords assigned of "Joe."
Out of all my images, there might be 5 images that include both Mary and Joe together. In iPhoto, I could rapidly find those 5 images of Mary and Joe together by clicking and selecting the separate Keywords "Mary" and "Joe" from the list of all my iPhoto Keywords.
Unless I'm missing something, the only way I have found to do this in Lightroom 1.0 is by typing both Mary and Joe in the FIND dialog box to find JUST the images of Mary and Joe together.
It is my understanding that LR currently has an "OR" find command when I "COMMAND-click" (Mac) on the Mary and Joe keywords, LR displays ALL the images of Mary and Joe. I would like to see a feature in future versions of LR where I could "OPTION-click" on the Keywords that I had set up in LR that would then initiate an "AND" Find command for the Keywords selected so that LR displays images where Mary AND Joe appear together in the images.

I did go to the LR Extras FAQ. However, I didn't find the specific references that you mention. I did notice a couple of topics that cover "intersections," but I don't think that addresses my specific request.
For example, If I'm searching through ALL of my images and I want to DISPLAY only the images of that I've taken of rivers in California, I would like to be able to do it in LR in ONE keystroke(OPTION) and TWO mouse clicks (in iPhoto, you can do it in two mouse clicks).
Currently, in LR 1.0, if I use the FIND panel, I would have to type in several keystrokes. If I don't have any COLLECTIONS for rivers or California, but do have KEYWORDS of "rivers" and "California," is there anyway I can select from the Keywords to have JUST the rivers in California displayed? To just have them highlighted only would force me to scroll through hundreds of pictures taken in California, when I might only have twenty photos of California rivers.
I appreciate your offer of help and please point me in the right direction if I am missing something. I do plan to re-visit the site again as I can see that it contains a lot of good insightful info about LR. Thanks.

  • Book Non-Pick Images confusion

I am totally confused and frustrated. I am trying to create a photo book for the first time and am working on one within a particular project. I have an edited color and black and white versions created from every master shot.
When I try to place an image on the photo book I get a bizarre message that tells me I can tried to use a "Non-Pick Image." What difference should it make?
If I select the image I want and make it the pick in the stack, it moves to the top of the stack, but the little check mark icon doesn't change and it STILL won't let me use the image I specified as "the pick" on the book.
Why do I need to use strictly "the pick" image from a stack? Makes it impossible to use the same image from a stack more than once. Nothing I seem to do allows me to use anything but the master image.
This shouldn't be this hard. I see the image I want, I drag and drop it where I want and I'm done. How do I get around this bug/feature?
    Thanks.

I experienced another side effect to this 'feature', and in figuring it out, I think I have the answer to your question. The quick answer is to unstack everything, or create new versions. If you want to understand what's going on, and learn the third way, read on...
There is a tiny mention in the manual that Stacks contain a series of related images, and one pick. This 'one pick' fact is very important. Stacks allow you to group images, but you can only designate ONE IMAAGE from the stack as the one to use. (The 'Pick'.) All the others in the stack are preserved in case you want to use one of them later instead, but they are basically hidden and can't be used in albums or books (I think). So, one pick per stack, and that is the left-most image (the one that stays on top when the stack is closed).
There is one confusing exception to this. You can designate another image in the stack as the 'Album Pick'. This tells Aperture that for this album only (or book), use the image in the stack with the check mark instead of the stack pick. You can set an Album Pick by selecting the image and choosing Stack > Set Album Pick (or something -- don't have Aperture open right now).
I haven't tried this yet, but I think if you make one image in the stack the Album Pick, then you can use two images from the same stack: the Stack Pick, and the Album Pick.
I still don't really get why.
Here is the scary side effect with books. BEWARE! So, I spent hours and hours building a 40 page book. I wanted two versions of the book -- both mostly identical, but a few pages were to be different in the second one. So, I got the first book perfect, adjusted all the images, proofed it, etc. Once I was satisfied, I duplicated that book and intended on making the few minor changes to the duplicate. Well, after I while, I noticed in shock that some images in the duplicate book did not have adjustments applied to them. After more investigation, I discovered that these 'non-adjusted' images were actually DIFFERENT IMAGES! Whereever I had used images from stacks in the first book, the duplicate book used some other images from the same stack!! This was disturbing!!! Such a major change, and NO NOTIFICATION.
I don't fully understand this, but basically, if you unstack the images, or use the Stack Pick and Album Pick, or create new versions of the images, you will avoid this problem.
So, Stacks are powerful and can be confusing. They are more than neat little organizers as I found out -- not at all like iPhoto's Events.
Does anyone have anything to add? What am I missing here?
    Thanks

  • Selecting and Deselecting Images in Aperture

Is there anyway to select images in Aperture and keep them selected until you deselect them? For example if I close Aperture I would like to be able to comeback and the images are still selected.

No, Aperture won't remember your selection after quitting.
You can get around this by creating a new album from selection, or a assigning a temporary keyword 'selected' which you can then filter for when relaunching aperture to select the same images again.

  • Can't I/O select a keyword clip?

I have a bunch of clips in an event. I have gone through these clips making selections and assigning keywords to the selections (such as "man plus car" or " happy face". In some cases I have assigned keywords to the whole clips too (such as "day 1"). Some selections I have assigned two or more keywords (eg "man and car", "happy face") and the selection might be within a whole clip with an assigned keyword or within a larger selection with an associated keyword.
I presume all that is quite standard. I can now click on a single keyword in the event list and see all clips associated with that keyword - including some clips that might be associated with other key words as well as the one I selected.
So, I click on a keyword (happy face) and see a list of clips. I then select a clip , play it through and decide I want just a few seconds in the middle. I can't make a selection. When I try to drag a yellow box the clip selection changes to the first clip in the list. Using I and O key commands does not work properly either. If I try to edit the resulting yellow box then the same thing happens: suddenly my clip changes selection to the first clip in the list.
I find this really odd. Can anyone work out what I am either doing wrong or what I need to do to sort things out? (Delete prefs?)
This weird behaviour has also lead to crashing of fcp and usual error reporting to apple.
I'm editing native hdv on a three year old macpro with latest OS and fcp x. 16GB memory and non raid internal sata disks.

    Thanks for the response.
I have trashed prefs and its no different. I have also repaired permissions for good measure.
I think I have honed down the issue:
Take a long(ish) clip and assign a key word to the whole thing (eg: wholething)
Make three (say) short selections in the clip and give them each the same key word (eg : smile)
Now in the event library you should see two key word entries for wholething and smile. Click wholething and you will see a single clip in the clip list; click smile keyword and you will see three clips in the clip list. All fine.
    Problem:
In List View (it has to be list view!) and with your smile keyword selected in the event library, try clicking on the third clip down. you'll see a film strip thing at the top, fine. now try making a selection. It first appears to work but as you release your mouse or when you press "I" (or "o") the first clip in the list becomes selected and your filmstrip preview changes to reflect this. Also that first clip reveals its associated keywords (which would be both smile and wholething) and the keyword wholething is selected. (as opposed to the parent clip title)
If I click the clip I was trying to work on, my selection is in fact in place and I can press E, W, Q to make an edit etc. But I have to click on that clip to get it selected again!
It works like this every time for me.
It works perfectly fine if I am using filmstrip view. I can select portions of any clip by dragging the mouse or using I/O keys. I can then just press E,W etc to make an edit.
Note: If I remove the all encompassing keyword "wholething", then making selections in keyword clips "smile" works as it should.
It seems you cannot have a keyword encompassing other keywords, if you want things to work properly.
FWIW I am working this way as I have placed the keyword "interview" on every (camera) clip that is interview footage. I have then selected "interview" in the event browser and gone through the clips marking subjects of discussion. these subjects areas were marked pretty roughly and I might only need a few words from one subject on my timeline. I want to select parts of the keyworded clip before updating my timeline (sorry, I mean "project" -ha)!
I hope all this makes sense!

  • Keyword list image count is greater than metada keyword image count.

How do you get the image counts to be the same? I have looked through the images of the offending keywords and there are no check marks against other keywords. Also above the film strip the total of all images selected is less than the total images. This has been an upgrade from Elements 10 catalog. Thanks.

Thank you, but I need to start with a "clean slate" or at least a correct one. So I have persevered and found a solution, which may seem lengthy, but beats rebuilding the keyword structure image by image. I had numbers against parent keywords (should be zero) and incorrect numbers against child keywords, not all, but some cases of each. Dealing with the child keywords within a parent first and then the parent, the procedure I used was:-
    1. Select child keyword
    2. Select all
    3. Create collection using keyword name for clarity
Repeat steps 1-3 for all child keywords within the parent keyword
    4. Delete the parent keyword
    5. Recreate the parent keyword
    6. Recreate all child keywords within the parent keyword
    7. Select a collection
    8. Select all
    9. Select the appropriate keyword and drag to an image
Repeat steps 7-9 for remaining collections
It appears to work and all the unaffected keywords are showing in each image!!!
The engineer in me is satisfied!

  • [tip] search for / selecting NO keywords (selection photos without a keyword)

Probably it is old news but I couldn't find it here that fast.
I have 20.000 photos, some have a keyword(s) some have not. So I searched for a selection of photographs without a keyword. But there is none.
The trick is to add a special keyword you normally not use like (only) "_" (underscore) to all photos without a keyword. But there is no way to select photos wihtout a keyword... So I came up with a two step strategy and this trick only cost 2-3 minutes with 20.000 photos:
Add the "_" keyword to all you photos.
Select all photos with a real keyword by shift clicking on all keywords tags except "_".
Remove the "_" keyword from those photos.
Now select the "_" keyword or search on the "_" keyword.
A how to, in 14 steps:
    1. Hit G, goto library (in left panel) and click on "all photographs"
    2. Select all photos by pressing ctrl-a
    3. Wait till LR is ready displaying all used keywords in the right keywords panel
    4. In right panel under keywording/keyword tags add the keyword "_"
    5. Wait till LR is ready updating all your photos (20.000 photos: 1 minute)
    6. Goto "Keyword tags" in the left panel
    7. Select the (suppose the second) keyword just after the "_" keyword by left clicking.
    8. Scroll down till the end in the keyword list
    9. Now, shift click on the last keyword
    10. You now selected all keywords except the "_" keyword and all are highlihted
    11. Select all photo's (ctrl-a)
    12. Wait till LR shows all the keywords in the Keywording/keyword tags panel on the right
check: the keyword "_" should have no asterix like "_*" if so: goto step 1!
    13. Remove the "_" keyword and press enter
    14. Wait till LR is ready
From now on while selecting the "_" keyword or searching on the keyword "_" LR will only show the photos without a (real) keyword.
Of course, as soon as you add keyword(s) to your foto(s) you have to delete the "_" keyword.
Speed tip: when starting keywording, select the photo you like to add real keywords, ctrl-k brings you directly to the keyword tags panel in edit mode, hit backspace (to delete the "_" keyword and start typing your keywords and hit enter or tab when done. Then immediately (of course) the photo dissapears from your "_" keyword selection photos and the next photo is selected and is waiting for you to hit ctrl-k and start again. Look mam, "no mouse used!"
    Have fun!

    >I have 20.000 photos, some have a keyword(s) some have not. So I searched for a selection of photographs without a keyword. But there is none.
There is actually, and it is much simpler:
Using the Find Panel, choose Text: Keywords and Rule: Are Empty.

  • Interesting technical paper on Non-destructive Imaging

John Nack references a useful technical paper in a recent
    blog entry. The paper titled
Non-Destructive Imaging: An Evolution of Rendering Technology by Peter Krogh covers a number of topics and one in particular illuminates the essential difference between file browsers (such as Bridge) and cataloging software (such as Lightroom).
With a file browser the truth is in the file; with cataloging software the truth is in the catalog. With cataloging software the raw image file need not be updated (now or in the future) and it is the more compact and transportable catalog that becomes the dynamic object and at all times containing a repository of the image "truth".

    >Jao - Sure, that shows you the images as edited just fine... wooopeeee!
Unbelievable, I show you more than what you asked for but hey whatever...
This database has all that in it. The database schema has the standard XMP in it. You can directly get that from the database and use those in ACR. It is simple to do so and not at all opaque. The command in SQL is simply: "select xmp from Adobe_AdditionalMetadata;" It also has a link to where the preview jpeg is stored, all in completely open, industry standard database format. Nothing tough or obscure about it. Adobe should be commended for using SQL lite and making the format so accessible. Making it so easy to access increases its usability quite a bit as the neat little focal-length histogram trick shows. Just a few lines of code!
    >Go ahead, put all your eggs in one basket... they are your photos... do whatever you want with them... but when your catalog corrupts and you lose all your edits (or press CTRL-Z and undo all your work), don't come crying to me...
I won't because I am not that dumb. But my backup and timeproof strategy has nothing to do with Lightroom's database not being good enough for the long term because it is. It is just pure common sense to "not put all my eggs in one basket." I backup original RAW files with associated xmp and on separate disks, developed high quality jpegs or even tiffs for those very special images. Even with that, I have never needed those backups but it does give me a good fall back. Nobody in their right mind that professionally depends on photography would rely on a single program, no matter the provenance.
    >Heck, create a catalog and wait a couple of years to use it again... odds are you won't be able to open it because of version changes.
Extremely unlikely. If you have this much distrust of Adobe products then what are you doing here. It is certainly not constructive to be seeding so much utterly unfounded FUD. Also as I said, it will not hurt me at all if such an apocalyptic vision comes to pass. Presumably I could simply open it with the current version of Lightroom (which doesn't magically stop working, neither will ACR) or even if I had misplaced that and somehow would have forgotten to back up xmp files on my backups, I would simply extract the xmp files from the sql lite database using open source tools and use those in acr or something similar. I could even extract the preview jpegs that Lightroom stores alongside the database file.

  • Allow the "Select a Color" eyedropper to select from the image.

For example: you want to enhance the sky with blue...  it takes several attempts to get a natural oxygen blue from the rainbow box.  The ability to select that color direct from the image would give quicker and more accurate results.

    Ian Lyons wrote:
    Feature already exists.
Open the Adjustment Brush colour palette, click down anywhere on the palette while holding down the Alt/Option key, now while still holding down the Alt/Option key move the eyedropper to the image and click the spot you want to sample from.
At least for me on Windows, you don't need to hold down a key.  Just click-and-drag.

  • Selecting multiple keywords

Does anyone know if there is a way to select multiple keywords from the "keyword tags" panel and have it do an AND search instead of an OR. i have family names setup as some of my keywords and if i select 2 names, i want it to show only photos that have have both people in them. not photos that have one OR the other.

If that is all that is wanted, in Keyword Tags on left of Library Multi-Select kewords do Select All on images and Do '+' for new collection to create collection with sellected images. Same end result.

  • Intermittant Loss of Ability to Select Contacts

I recently updated to V 1.1.4 of iPhone software/firmware, but the behavior I describe below has occurred under both 1.1.3 and 1.1.4.
From time to time, I lose the ability to select all contacts within the Phone application. They appear, but none of them can be selected. Selecting items under other apps (Safari, Mail, etc.) works fine while I am experiencing the Contacts problem.
Turning iPhone off/on restores my ability to select contacts without losing any settings. Also, doing a Reset All Settings restores the ability to select contacts (with the down side that I lose Stocks, Weather, World Clocks and numerous other parameters that have been set).
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any ideas re the source of the problem so I can avoid it in the future?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

    Jennifer,
    Thanks for your response.
I did not attempt restoring (while backing up settings) since I was able to (temporarily) correct the problem via turning the iPhone off/on and also by doing the Reset All Settings function on the iPhone itself.
Are you suggesting that restoring per your link would resolve the problem itself so that it wouldn't happen in the future?

  • When I try to move from one selected image to selecting a different image, lightroom (new install of Lightroom 5.5) will keep the previous image selected, so I always end up with two selected images - why?

For example, I will select the first image in my grid view, then let's say I want to work on the fifth image. When I click on the fifth image, Lightroom leaves image one selected, as if I have held down the Command or the Shift key to select multiple images.  This is not what I expect. Then I am forced to command click the image I no longer want selected - this happens every time I try to move to any new image - the previous one(s) stay selected.  I have tried a reboot of my machine but still this happens.  Also, as a further bug, if I leave my grid with no images selected at all, after a few seconds Lightroom automatically selects the first two images in my library and highlights them - without my even pressing a key!  This is really weird behaviour. It's really frustrating as I like to use my keyboard arrow keys to move through my library of images, but when Lightroom keeps two images selected it just ping pongs between those two images.  I deselect and try to move on, and it again leaves the previous image selected!  By the way - I am not in Compare mode while this is happening - just in standard browsing of the library...  Help please!

  • WHY does the finder insist on rearranging the files in a folder in alphabetical order even when I have selected "none" in the preferences for file organization?

WHY does the finder insist on rearranging the files and/or documents in a folder in alphabetical order even when I have selected "none" in the preferences for file organization? Even after I numbered the documents/folders to keep them in my preferred order, it will still displace them occasionally. This is becoming increasingly frustrating!
Is this a "Pages" issue or "FInder"? The vast majority of documents I use are in Pages, but there are also Numbers, PDFs, jpegs and a few other applications involved. This never happened before I upgraded to Mountain Lion; in Tiger, the documents (mostly Appleworks) and files stayed where I wanted them to be.
I am visually oriented, and prefer to arrange items in a folder in an order that makes them easier for me to access, which is often NOT alphabetical.
Can anyone suggest a solution? Please??
    Thank you.
    Sara

    nbar,
    Thank you for your reply.
However, I do not understand what you mean by "user account." I am the only user, and can find no options for "user" or "guest." The parental controls have always been off, as there are no other people who have access to my computer.
    Frank,
    Thank you for your reply.
All my documents, files and folders are in icon view, Arranged By: none in both view and view options. This arbitrary rearranging does not happen all the time, only when I make a substantial change to one of the documents in the file or folder. I'm not sure what you mean by "column heading."
    MichaelLAX,
    Thank you for your reply.
I know, to my sorrow, that Appleworks does not work with Mountain Lion. I spent at least three months converting approximately 2,000 Appleworks documents to Pages, Numbers, Bento (for databases) and Touchdraw (for drawings). So this is not the problem; but as I said, I did not have this rearranging problem with Appleworks - the icons stayed where I wanted them to be. I still miss the ease and reliability of Appleworks, darn it!
    Frank,
Thank you for your second reply.
I do have the Sort By: in view options as well as in view set to "none."   The finder still insists on rearranging, but only when I have made a substantial change to a document in that file or folder.
    Any futher thoughts?
    xdab,
    Thank you for your reply.
"Are you are using icon view, but for some reason the finder moves files around? is that the problem?"
YES!! This is exactly the problem.
"If this operation is successful then erase the original and rename the new one to the name originally chosen by the user."
This seems like a lot of trouble, especially as I often work on several documents at the same time.
"By the way, the finder has a "clean up by" menu that rearranges icons in one of the standard orders, there are shortcuts that produce the same effect, for example <option><cmd>1 sorts them by name. Is it possible that this shortcut was typed by mistake without you noticing?"
I do know about this "clean up by" option, and avoid it like the plague! So I doubt this is the issue, and I infrequently use keyboard shortcuts like this anyway.
Thanks all who replied. None of the suggestions seem to work, however. Any others out there?
    Regards,
    Sara
