Ableton Live 6 vs Logic Pro 8 CPU usage/audio quality.

Hi,
Any user's have feedback regarding CPU usage between Abelton Live 6 vs Logic Pro 8. I'm currently running Live 6 on an MBP 2.0ghz (CD) and am constantly running into audio drop outs etc etc.I am reading throughout the net that Logic Pro 8 is more CPU friendly than LIve 6... is this true, overall? Also any users ever do a mixing test between the two apps to see if there was an audio difference when rendering your final project to aiff or wav? I am thinking on using Live 6 as a stratch pad to "create" as I enjoy it's flexibility then transfer the project over to Logic, however that depends if there really is a difference in CPU usage and Audio quality between the two DAW's.
Thanks.
guess i should also state that i will be running on the new imac's come tax return time. lol

Logic 8 is very CPU friendly, I can say that much. I never found Ableton Live 5 to be very taxing either, though. Pro Tools is.
But like you I use Ableton as a scratchpad, I love how it works, and Logic for the finishing touches. But that's just because I'm not good at Logic yet. Not fast at it.
Get them both! You'll be glad you did.

  • Rewire with Ableton Live 8 and Logic Pro 9

    Hi guys,
I'm really hoping that somebody can help me with (sorry) a Rewire problem...I am close to tearing my hair out.
I'm trying to Rewire Logic Pro 9 and Ableton Live 8. Before you ask I am using 32-bit Logic, and I am opening up Logic first, then Ableton but I can't seem to get the Ableton Live Rewire channels to appear in the Logic library.
Please help if you can, I'm going steadily insane. Such a waste of my time having to sort this rubbish out.
    Cheers!

    Hi
Did you run Live without Logic running to get Live to install the necessary Rewire bits and pieces?
You will then need to quit, Live, start Logic start Live.

  • Ableton Live 8 to Logic Pro 9 Switch?!?

    Hey everyone,
I'm a producer and own a record label and I recently bought a Mac Mini (Mid-2007) that I have succesfully upgraded to Mac OS X Snow Leopard! I am very familar with the Mac interface so that is not an issue, but I am not familar with the Logic Pro 9 interface. I currently use Ableton Live 8.3 and Reason 6. I have used FL Studio and Reaper, but made the switch to Ableton about a year ago. I love Ableton, don't get me wrong, but I've heard some really good stuff about Logic and I want to find a way to learn it. I haven't found a good guide to Logic, but I guess most of it I can teach myself like I did Ableton. If you have any tutorials on getting started in Logic or maybe a Logic For Dummies (I Don't Know) but if you read this please link me!
    Thanks,
    Jacob Wolf

Hi Jacob. I use Logic 9 and Ableton 8 currently. I think that you will find Logic very similar to Arrangement View in Ableton. I prefer the layout in Logic over Ableton. I just like the overall look, as well as some of Logic-specific features like Flex editing, the arrangement window, and the MIDI tools. For the most part, you can do identical things with them. Ableton obviously has Session mode, as well, which would be more comparible to Apple's Mainstage (only $30 on the App Store).
I use Mainstage over Ableton for loops/ backing tracks with my band. If you need a DAW to use live, Logic is not a good choice but I do prefer it for recording, mixing, etc. To help me get down some of the intricacies, I picked up Logic Pro 9 Power, by Kevin Anker. I liked the way he presented things, and I got a lot out of the book. Best of luck!

    Hello.
I try to rewire Live Intro 9 to Logic Pro 8.

I'm not convinced that running Live 9 in 64 bit will work with Logic 8 (which is 32 bit only). Live 9 32 bit does Rewire with Logic 8 fine here.
Open Live 9 32 bit mode to install all it's Rewire stuff, close it, then open Logic 8. Start Live 32bit version and you should be good to go.

  • Logic Pro 9: CPU usage

I could definitely use some help!
I am a well experience Logic Pro 9 user, and I am having some serious issues with CPU usage.  I have a Mac Mini Server with a 2 GHz Core i7 and 8 GB of 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM.  With my current system, I run all of my applications and operating system on a dedicated internal HD.  All my sessions are run from a seperate internal HD.
Typically I don't experience many issues with CPU usage with exception of this project.  Every 5 seconds I get this error.
    "System Overload.
The audio engine was not able to process all required data in time.
    (-10011)"
I have tried everything under the sun and even the old "who's your father" trick to eliminate this issue.  NOTHING has worked yet.  Here's what I've done so far:
    1. Increase my buffer size to it's max at 1024 samples.
    2. Freeze all tracks which I use heavy processing plugins.
    3. Flatten and merge all take folders.
    4. Merge all audio regions.
    5. Delete all unused audio regions in my bin.
    6. Set all channels to "No Input"
    7. Close out of all other programs.
    8. Turn off WiFi.
    9. Turn off Bluetooth
I'm currently running 35 audio tracks, 3 Aux tracks and 0 midi tracks.  I have very little automation, and I'm not using Flex time. I have never experience this much CPU usage ever, and it's driving me INSANE.
    Any help is grealy appreciated.

What does the Drive/CPU usage (Performance) metering look like in Logic? That overload error can mean a lot of different things. Typically... it's a system bus overload and can be caused by Logic's Space Designer and/or Delay Designer. What is the Process Buffer Range set at?
Have you tried a project of this size since upgrading to 10.8.4?
Curious, what sample rate are you using?
I like AOL's idea of importing each track, might narrow it down.

  • When i try to open my projekt in logic pro x it say audio files not found?

when i try to open up a projekt in logic pro x it say audio files not found why is this heppends?

This error typically means the audio files you used in this project are no longer found in their original location.. (did you move or delete them?) or you have renamed the audio files..... or they were located on an external HD etcand that drive or disk is no longer available.... because its not plugged in.

  • Will Logic Pro accomodate a M-Audio Fast Track Ultra?, Will Logic Pro accomodate a M-Audio Fast Track Ultra?

Will Logic Pro accomodate a M-Audio Fast Track Ultra?, Will Logic Pro accomodate a M-Audio Fast Track Ultra?

M-Audio is a bit slow getting drivers out but they eventually get it right so take heart... even companies like Focusrite don't have 100% compatible drivers for some of their hardware.
Not sure if -all- of the recent USB changes were released on time. I'm regularly in touch with a couple of plugin developers and both say Apple is notorious for last minute changes. Don't know if it's true or not.

  • Ableton LIVE 7 and Macbook Pro mouse

    Hi there,
Recently my MBP has been behaving oddly using Ableton Live 7. I will post this in an Ableton specific forum too, but wonder if this is a Mac problem rather than a software thing.
When the tracks are playing in the timeline the mouse pointer often jumps to weird places on the screen making navigation impossible when playing.. My cpu is only at 50% and there is no indication that I have too many plug ins open or anything... Same thing happens without using the bluetooth mouse and just using the trackpad..
Anyone had a problem like this using Ableton or other software??

For anyone who may experience this issue - it is a known issue and turning Airport off fixes it.. Nice..................

  • Conflict between Logic Pro and external device error in Logic Pro X./cpu problems

    hi Logic users,
    using a MacBookPro 15 inch Retina, 2,7 GHz intel Core i7, 16 GB Ram, OSX 10,8,5, Logic X 10.0.4.
i am wondering if you can help me out with the following problem i cant solve:
when starting logic x with a not too big arrangement, lets say using one third to half of cpu, i open u-he plugin Diva and the cpu is going up on full range and the following error appears: "sample-rate 39299 (number always changes) reconized. Check conflict between logic pro x and external device"
as external device im running a VirusTi and as audio-device Apogge Duet. when dis-connecting both devices, i have the same problem.
putting the sample buffer up to the highest rate, doesnt change anything.
same arrangements on friends computers dont show that problem, so it has to be something wrong in my set up.
    anybody has an idea?
would be much appreciated for your help,
    thanx-

Have you used Diva's preset Accuracy system to reduce CPU load?
    accuracy
Click on the Main button at the bottom of the window. To the right of the Master section are two selectors called Accuracy and OfflineAcc. In the current version of Diva these are global parameters i.e. they remain fixed across all presets, per loaded instance:
draft........CPU-friendly, but FM will sound rough and resonance is primitive i.e. NOT zero delay! fast......... Fine for older computers and/or when you need more polyphony in acceptable quality great...... The best compromise between quality and polyphony on high-power computers divine..... Top-quality zero delay feedback filters... but can your computer can handle it?
OfflineAcc only has two options – same or best (i.e. divine in the current version).
Some host applications may have problems rendering to audio at the selected accuracy, but the
better ones include an “inform plug-ins of offline rendering status” or similar.
I typically work in draft mode and then switch to Devine or best when freezing the track or bouncing the entire project...

  • Installing ableton live 5 on macbook pro

I have ableton live 5, but it won't install in macbook pro. I've used it on previous mac, and current pc, but not happy with it.
The company says that I have to upgrade it to work with macbook pro, but I don't buy that.
That would mean that a current pc can do what a macbook pro can't, even though they are the same age and processor.
the program is made to work for both.

this might or might not work for you.
try this, verify and repair your disk permissions - once the repairs are done, restart your macbook.
once you've restarted - try updating your macbook again and see if that works for you.
good luck - hope you get it sorted out.

  • Logic pro X CPU is off the chart since Yosemite

I'm having some Logic Pro X issues. The CPU usage is off the charts. CPU shows active when I'm not even playing a track. I have no other applications open. I have repaired permissions etc.  It's so bad that the CPU spikes if I play just one track of audio, and Logic will show "system unable to play back.." error. This really is ridiculous. Should I go back to the previous version of OS X? I'm out of ideas. Strangely, somedays it works just fine. As soon as I think the problem has past, it starts up again. I definitely seems like some kind of CPU or memory issue. Any help would be appreciated. I know my system is a little light but I've never had these issues before upgrading to Yosemite. And no, I foolishly don't really use time machine, so that's not an option either.
    Thanks,
    MikeD

At the moment, Yosemite and LPX is not a recommended combination.... Many people have reported the same behavior of 10.10 and 10.0.7 working fine one day and then it all falls apart the next....
Nothing much you can do as you didn't make backups... which means you can't easily roll back to a previous configuration...
So, your only two choices are
    A) Manually backup your personal data/projects/photos/music etc... to an external HD and then wipe your System drive (assuming your recovery partition is still showing 10.9) and reinstall Mavericks from scratch... holding down Cmd + R at startup... Then reinstall LPX plus content plus any 3rd party plugins and libraries you use.
    or...
    B) Wait for a while (maybe quite a while) until Apple releases fixes for Yosemite and/orLPX to resolve these issues.... and put up with the current problems.
In the meantime, I suggest you start making backups using something like Time Machine or my preferred method which is using the HD cloning utility SuperDuper! as one day, you will need them.....

Not what you wanted to hear I'm sure.. but that's the current state of play.

  • Logic Pro 9 - CPU SPIKE!

I don't know why, but I am constantly having cpu spikes when running Logic Pro 9.
I am using plugins like waves, blue cat audio and some midi drums with kontakt 5.
I did freeze ALL the tracks, put some plugins on bypass, but nothing worked.
Is there any solution on this?
    I am running on a Mac Mini Server (Mid 2011), witch has an 128GB SSD Corsair + 500GB HD 7200RPM, 8GB of RAM and a 2.0Ghz i7 Quad-Core.

You cán do something, because from your screenshot I can see that you are using the Source Only freeze mode (Blue freeze button) for your audio tracks - this in fact does not alter the load on the CPU at all, since all inserted plugins still have to process the exact same audio anyway in source only mode. Youcan readabout that in the part of the manual I linked to.
In short: you need to use Pre Fader freeze mode (Green freeze button) instead, so the plugins also get included in the frozen file, and are bypassed after freezing (even though they stay "lit", as if they're not bypassed, but they are).
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/logicpro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=9%26sec tion=16%26tasks=true
Also, in my opinion you are using too many similar plugins (GEQ, Channel EQ, Multipressor) on the same channel strip(s). Multipressor for instance is CPU intensive. Same goes for many of the Waves stuff, much of it is CPU heavy, especially plugins that emulate classic hardware.

  • Macbook Pro / Logic Pro 9 / CPU 'System Overload'

Dear Members - I have read a few threads from some google searches but can't find a solution to my current problem.
    I have a MacBook Pro (2010):
    Mac OS X
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
I don't run much else on my MacBook other than MS Office, Firefox Web Browser and Logic Pro 9.
Now that my recording projects are getting more sufficient, I am using a lot more plug ins but running into the same problem over and over: 'System Overload'.  My CPU maxes out and the programme stops.
I've followed a fair amount advice and done all the necessary adjustments in terms of Logic preferences to run smoother.  However, I need to be in the position to have as many tracks and as many plug ins as I want!
I'm looking for advice on what I can to improve my machines performance.  I love my MacBook Pro and wonder (and hope) there is something I can add to it to make things run smoother.  For instance, I keep hearing about the new Mac Mini and wonder if there is any way I could hook both my systems up.  I'm not sure whether that is possible and can confirm that my spec and technical knowledge isn't good at all.
I look forward to hearing from you.  Please let me know if you need any more information.
    Thanking you in advance!
    Martin

As many plugins as you want, did I hear that correctly? Every machine has is limits, a few of Logic's high end plugins can bring the most powerful Mac_Pro to it's knees if used incorrectly.
Personally, I'm not fond of using two machines, it's much more of a hassle than you might think.
I assume you're using a bus for effects where possible (instead of inserts).
And you are freezing tracks when necessary. If you're into the mixing stage of a project and do not need low latency, up the Logic audio I/O buffer to 1024. Try the Process buffer at Large.

  • Logic Pro 9 CPU Utilization

    Hello
I have two major questions about how well Logic Pro 9 utlizes Multi-core CPUs.
    1. What is the maximum number of threads/cores that Logic Pro 9 can support. I heard that it was 16 threads, which means that a processor with 8 physical cores is the maximum since Intel's HyperThreading makes them 16 thread/cores. So does anybody know of the max?
    2. How well does Logic Pro 9 utilize processors that have more than 4 cores? Does the performance increase greatly with additional cores or is there barely any difference?
    Thanks

    Hi
It sounds to me like you are considering which new Mac to buy?

Support for 6/12 core Macs was added in v 9.1.2. I believe that the max number of threads is 16, but I have not checked this on a 12 core MacPro.

This is not an exact 'science'. Taking into account the way that Logic assigns "channels" to CPU cores, the overall performance will depend on what you need it to do.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3161
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4426
For example, a large (8 Part) multi-timbral instance of Omnisphere could seriously load 1 CPU, leaving the others relatively un-touched. (Here, a faster CPU Core helps).
Running several 'smaller' instances of Omnisphere, the CPU  load would be distributed more evenly over the cores. In this sort of situation, more cores would be better.
Ultimately, it comes down to this: if you can afford it, get as many cores as you can, and get the fastest cores that you can. There is a "price point" where the benefits of the additional cost of faster cores/ number of cores becomes too expensive.
