About cameras not mounting on the desktop in Tiger (10.4.3)

Information for those here who have problems with their cameras or chip readers no longer mounting on the desktop.
This has happened here too, with a Nikon D50 connected to an iMac G5 iSight 20". At first, I thought it was a lock file problem, caused by me forgetting and disconnecting the camera without first ejecting the desktop icon. But, I now think the problem is more likely caused by upgrading to 10.4.3, since I spoke with AppleCare today.
I was told that the 10.4.3 upgrade says (somewhere) that due to changes in iSync, cameras will no longer be mounted on the desktop. I made the observation that many users of digital still cameras prefer to transfer images from the camera (or chip) using the Finder. The operator said he would escalate this issue - he didn't know why this might have been changed, but seemed to understand that it would be an issue for a number of people.
Personally, I'm confused by the whole arrangement, which seems most un-Mac like: image handling prefs are actually set in Image Capture, despite the fact that the default app that launches when connecting a camera is iPhoto. Now, it seems, iSync is being brought into the frame (please excuse the pun!).
Why can't the action be defined in a General Preference pane, where it would be more easily found? Well, the answer is that it surely could be - and I would suggest that it should be. And I think the prefs should also include an option to have the camera/flash chip mounted on the desktop, for access in Finder too.
On a final note, the Nikon D50 is, I was told, not in the list of cameras supported by Tiger. Yet, when I checked with Nikon, they do not issue any drivers for the D50 and said that the drivers in Tiger are "D-series camera drivers" and, as such, are compatible with the new D50. Unfortunately, a lot of my time was wasted, because the AppleCare rep repeatedly wanted me to accept that the problem was due to the fact that this model of camera is not supported. This was despite the fact that I advised him of the fact that there are a number of threads here in the discussion forums, with users mentioning that they've had exactly the same issue with a variety of different cameras, of many brands.
I'll report back, as and when I hear anything further from the escalation of this issue.
Nigel

You have tried a lot of things, all correct, but have you repaired permissions since reinstalling Flash?
Repairing permissions is important, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two in Tiger, but much longer in Leopard.
Background information here:

and here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672
An article on troubleshooting Permissions can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963
By the way, you can ignore any messages about SUID or ACL file permissions, as explained here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448?viewlocale=en_US
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.
Also, how much RAM do you have? Some older G4's can struggle with today's streamed flash content.

  • When connecting to server the other computers will not mount on the desktop

    Hello
I have three computers connected wireless and ethernet. When connecting to the imac and mac pro with my macbook pro the other computers will not mount on the desktop. I have never had a problem like this before.
The imac and mac pro will mount the laptop or imac and the imac will mount the mac pro and laptop.
When I connect to the server with the laptop I can access everything thru the shared folders but nothing will mount on the laptop desktop using the, connect to server.
External HD connected with firewire will mount and the internal cd/dvd will mount.
I have ran permissions repair on the laptop. Have I accidently changed some configuration I am not aware of?
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated
    Thank You
    Dick

    Dick,
I know this sounds silly but while in Finder goto (Finder)/(Preferences) and then make sure your on the (General) tab, make sure all the things you want to show are checked.
If that doesn't help move the com.apple.finder.plist to the desktop you can find in in ~/Library/Preferences ( ~ = Your Home Folder), log out/log in, and see if that fixes the problem if not go ahead and move the plist file back.
    hope that helps,
    Weston

  • CD-R not mounted on the desktop

Sinc ehte CD-R I'm use to use since years are no more mounted on the desktop i think i could have decided, by mistake, to flag the option as default not to mount them
If you see a dialog, you can choose an action from the pop-up menu and select “Make this action the default” if you want the same thing to happen every time you insert a blank disc.
The disc appears on your desktop."
Let's suppose i decided once by mistake NOT TO MOUNT the CD on the desktop, how can i come back and delete the choice i did?
    Thanks

In Preferences, CDs & DVDs, simple select what you want to happen for blank CDs DVDs music, picture CDs or video DVDs.
It's all there. You can change it anytime.

  • My iPod does not mount to the desktop!

Under my system profile, my computer recognizes that my iPod is present, yet it does not mount to my desktop or iTunes. What could be wrong?

Good, I'm not sure if this will work, but it's worth a try.
Here's a way to do it without Terminal.
In finder, go to the "Go" menu and choose "Go to Folder". In the box that opens, type "/Volumes". When that opens, you are looking at the devices mounted to the operating system. If no iPod is there, then even though the system sees the device, for some reason it can't mount it at all.
If you have permissions problems, then you might have to enable the root account. If that's the case I can give you directions on how to do that, but I don't think you'll need it as long as you are an Administrator of the computer.
If that folder opens, and you don't see your iPod, let me know. Even though I have seen this happen a bunch of times, I'm having trouble recreating it at the moment, so I can't test to see if I can manually mount it. I'd like to try to give you directions to do so.
Otherwise, if you see an entry for you iPod, try clicking on it and see if you get in.

  • Seeing a camera mounting on the desktop

Hi, I've shot a 40 min video with a nikon coolpix but to import it, I've to go through Iphoto. The problem is that the file seems too long to be improted in Iphoto. I'd like to know how to do to see the camera mounting on the desktop in order to get directly from it the avi file.
May be you have another way to do it without opening Iphoto.
    Thanx
    Steve

As iBod pointed out Image Capture preferences determines what happens when you attach a camera to your Mac. Just like Safari determines your default browser.
I like to download my camera to a new desktop folder using image capture. I can then open iPhoto and select what I want to go to iPhoto. I keep the original download folders in a separate folder in Pictures to backup.

  • Lacie DVD burner - DVDs & CDs won't mount on the Desktop

    Hi -
I've had an external Lacie Porsche DVD burner for about 11 months now. Two months ago, both CDs & DVDs stopped mounting on the Desktop. I've aleady verified that CD & DVDV mounting on the Desktop is selected in Finder General Prefs. All CDs mount fine when inserted in the internal CD burner drive.
The DVD burner shows up in ASP, iTunes & Toast as Ac NEC, model #2510A, I believe.
The Lacie product (model) # is 300759A.
Thanks, in advance, for any feedback.

You ought to try this as well on the hardware forum as well.

  • After installing an App, the icon does not appear on the desktop?

After installing an App, the icon does not appear on the desktop? Where would I find it?

Some people have found that an app (usually iBooks for some reason) hasn't appeared on a homescreen until after the iPad has been reset and has restarted : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
Also depending on what the app is have you got an age rating set in Settings > General > Restrictions that is hiding it ?

  • "This disk does not appear on the desktop"

I have 3 Firewire drives on my iMac. On occasion, instead of the normal orange Firewire disk drive icon, I get a generic icon that looks like a small window with a blue bar at the top. If I run Disk Warrior, it says "This disk does not appear on the desktop". Worse, sometimes the system looses one or more drives completely and has to be restarted. All of the external drives check out good with Disk Warrior. All drives power-down the spindle when inactive for some period of time. Any idea what might be going on?

Mail shows in the doc, but when clicked or doubled clicked does not open on the desktop, HELP !

    Try restarting your Mac.
Open Termimal (Applications/Utilities/Terminal)Try entering this command: killall Dock, and then hit enter
Try dragging the Mail icon out of the dock, then let it disappear in a puff of smoke. Then from Applications/Mail try dragging the Mail icon back into the dock, and see if it works.
Does Mail open otherwise? Like if you try opening it from your Applications folder?if it doesn't:
Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery
if that doesn't work: reinstall Mavericks over your current installation.

  • My Hard Drive is not mounted on my desktop

    Hey guys,
For anyone who knows. I recently had my hard drive formatted and it is not mounted on my desktop. Its in the finder but someone not showing up on my desktop. Anyone know how I can correct this?

    Hi ScaradL,
Have a look in Finder/preferences/general, and make sure there is a tick next to "Hard Drives". If there is, deselecting (ie "unticking") and then ticking it again.
    Cheers

  • Linux is not ready for the desktop - Mandriva devs

I just read this in the latest DistroWatch Weekly:
You wouldn't expect something like this to happen at any time, let alone on the eve of Mandriva Linux 2007 release. Last week, two Mandriva developers went on record saying that "Linux is not ready for the desktop". In a web log post entitled Why I'll never use Linux for my main desktop, Vincent Danen concluded: "This kind of thing is precisely why, for me, Linux belongs on the server. Now if those kernel-developing idiots would get their act together and give us a 2.6 kernel that was a) stable and b) supported for more than a week, then I'd really be pleased." Another Mandriva developer, Fabrice Facorat, agreed. In a post called Linux ready for Desktop? Of course not!, he had this to say: "For me when you have control over the environment and the hardware, Linux is ready: think servers, workstations, thin clients, kiosks. However when you have no control on the hardware, Linux is not ready because it somewhat lacks flexibility."
There you have it, right from the horse's mouth! From two guys who have been working for a Linux company, developing a popular desktop Linux distribution, for years! Yes, that's right, Mandriva Linux is not ready for your desktop! Don't waste your money buying it!
One really has to wonder about the future of a company which happily asks Gaël Duval to leave, yet is quite pleased to keep developers who publicly hint that they consider Linus Torvalds, Alan Cox and other kernel developers "idiots"! A perfect pre-release PR, non?
No comments... I just cannot find any words.    :?

ughhhh. Mandrake have always sucked at marketing, they do themselves no favours. IMHO, they're becoming more and more irrelevant with each release. Once upon a time I might have reccomended mandrake to a newbie, but certainly not now. They've got great assets and a good base. The *potential* to become a good distro. But each release, stupid bugs make it through, and the improvements seem negligable.
Once of their better features is their huge repository of packages -- which is horrendously poorly advertised. You'll find nowhere in the GUI's or desktop a place to access their 'contrib' repo which is the equivalent of our extra, and contains a huge amount of packages. Also an important point for mandriva has been mandrakeusers.org/mandrivausers.org, which has been a huge community offering great support for newbies to mandrake, rather than directing them into the expensive mess that is known as the mandriva club. Mandriva have totally ignored this resource, and have made no attempt to support this board, upon which you'll find, I have quite a reasonable post count from back in my early days of Linux (mandriva 8.2 was first distro), and continuing on to now. It also exemplifies their (lack of) decent customer support.
The distro has had countless irritating bugs which pervaded through releases, and all sorts of utterly stupid ones that should never have made it through the testing process. They do little to help themselves with this. I've reported countless bugs, and all of them have been ignored for months. On their last release, they included the old rt2500 module, which at the time, hard locked SMP machines, and made my mandriva unbootable as it was loaded on boot. I filed a bug, marked it as high priority and it was utterly ignored for more than 6 months, so much so I had forgotten about it. Other bugs and emails have suffered a similar fate.
It's GUI tools, have become a complete mess, for example wireless, in 2006 release, was absolutely horrendous to configure, and had no support for WPA -- wpa_supplicant wasnt even on the CD's so people could configure it manually.
It's good to see they're finally ditching their old desktop theme, which they dragged on for far too long. It's always been absolutely hideous.
Their business model emphasises the 'club' far too much, making it difficult to even find a download on their site for the standard version, which has "Free" tacked all over it, as if to try and make you feel like a cheapskate. Doesnt help how they change their release cycle frequently either.
The stupidity of Mandriva just confounds me. PR like this does nothing to help them. They criticise the developers for not providing a 2.6 kernel that is stable. Maybe mandriva should look in their own backyard, and offer a distro that's remotely stable. Last time I used it, it had a horrendously old udev, hotplug, and a very slow hardware detection system. It still used bootsplash, which has been unmaintained for over two years, and included supermount, which Con Kolivas has disowned and again, has abandoned for years. They're hardly doing themselves favours patching their kernels with this out of date crap. Nor do they update them, I dont see mandriva offering updates to newer ones, which would no doubt fix many of the reported issues.
Alternatively they could do what other distros do and pitch in and help. Many of the kernel developers are also employees of other vendors, or have an important part in other distros, such as Daniel Drake and Robert Love. It'd be great for mandrake if they employed a kernel developer, because it's clear THEY are the ones who are the idiots.
I have no idea how they made it out of their bankrupcy, with the lacklustre state of their miserable distro, I think their days are numbered, unless they do something to change around their image and fix their product.
    ok, im done.

    What Tom said.
Or you may be able to import using a different program - try with Quicktime Player, "New Movie Recording". If the camera appears as an option, it should work.
