• About:config shows an empty page

When I enter about:config into the adress box I get only an empty page. The about:config works normally on safe mode.
I have tried to check all boxes in the safe mode window, this did not help. I even manually disabled all add-ons and plugins, but this didn't help either.
Any ideas what to do?

Try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
In Firefox Safe mode these changes are effective:
*all extensions are disabled
*the default theme is used (no persona)
*userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored
*the default toolbar layout is used (localstore-safe.rdf)
*the Javascript JIT compiler is disabled
*hardware acceleration is disabled
*plugins are not affected
*preferences are not affected

• Firefox will open 4 or 5 tabs fine, but then will not load any further websites after those first 4 or 5, or allow you to refresh one of those first tabs -- including about:config and the addon page

Firefox 5 worked fine. I installed Firefox 7, and when I ran it, tabs would just say "connecting to..." and hang. Restarting did not help. Websites open fine in IE and Chrome. Disabled all firewalls and antivirus, did not help. Uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox 5, everything worked fine again. This was using Vista 64-bit.
Upgraded to Windows 7, uninstalled Firefox 5, installed Firefox 7, had same problem. Uninstalled Firefox 7 completely (including the profile information, I saved that information in another folder), restarted computer, and installed Firefox 7 using a completely clean profile. Did not install any add-ons, checked to make sure all plug-ins were up-to-date, and updated plugins.
Now when I start Firefox, I can load 3 or 4 or 5 tabs fine -- after those first few tabs are open, I cannot open or refresh any other tabs -- including about:config and the add-on manager -- I have to restart Firefox. The hangup doesn't appear to be related to what websites I am attempting to open, but it looks like the number is the problem. I have run through all of the FAQ procedures, including changing the max number of network connections to 48, and the problem does not seem to go away.
As a side note, I had this same problem when I tried to go from version 5 to version 6 as well. Version 5 is the most recent version that worked on my system.

Can you try Aurora - download it from http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/
And let us know how it works.

• Why does the location bar only perform searches, even typing about:config just returns a google search for "about:config"

My location bar will only perform web searches and no longer takes the browser directly to web address entered manually. for example typing "about:config" returns the results of a google search for "about:config", typing "http://www.gawker.com" does not take me to gawkers website but rather returns google search results for "http://www.gawker.com".

You might want to disable or remove that Yahoo! activeX Plug-in Bridge that shows in your Installed Plugins. Firefox doesn't do ActiveX and a plugin like that might leave you open to being exploited.
First you need to figure out if an extension you have installed is causing that.
Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode? <br />

If not, see this: <br />

Or, it could be caused by Malware.
Install, update, and run these programs in this order. (Not all programs detect the same Malware.) They are all free for personal use, but some have limited functionality in the "free mode" - but those are features you really don't need to find and remove the problem that you have.<br />

• When accessing certain links I get the follwoing on a white page: It Works! This does not happen at the link using Explorer

An example of this is when I clicked on the link for the weather .gov radar site on my bookmark it did not go to the radar site but returned the white pager with the owrs: It Works!
This has occurred on other sites where I have tried to access a link. I used Explorer and was able to access the site.
Any thoughts? I have run an antivirus scan to no avail.
Thank you

Do a malware check with some malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.<br />
You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.<br />
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.<br /><br />

• About:Config opens for a fraction of a second, then returns a blank page

When attempting to open Firefox's about:config page, it shows the confirm/warning screen for a fraction of a second, then seems to redirect to a blank page.
I first noticed this just after installing Minefield, which I have now uninstalled - though I do not use about:config often and the issue could have started before then.

Did you use the same Firefox 3.6.x profile folder with the Minefield 4.0 version?
You should be careful with doing that because the two versions are not compatible (some files may get upgraded; extensions.sqlite) and you can get problem if you use that profile in the future again with a 4.0 version.
Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).<br />
See Troubleshooting extensions and themes and Troubleshooting plugins
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems<br />
See Basic Troubleshooting&#58; Make a new profile<br />
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"<br />
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)<br />
See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox<br />

• File, Send link doesn't open a new email. Using Firefox 11.0. Outlook 2010 is the Mailto default and W7 default email program. On the About:config page network.protocol-handler.external.mailto is set to regular font (not bold) "default Boolean true".

File, Send link doesn’t open a new email. Running Firefox 11.0. Outlook 2010 is the Mailto default and the W7 default email program. On the About:config page, network.protocol-handler.external.mailto is set to regular font (not bold) “default Boolean true”.

I assume you have tried toggling the setting in Firefox between Outlook and, say, Gmail:
orange Firefox button or classic Tools menu > Options > Applications
In the search box, type or paste mailto and pause for the list to filter.
Change the setting and OK to save it, then return to the dialog, change back, and OK again.
You also might want to toggle the setting at the OS level between Microsoft Outlook and the native Windows Mail client in a similar fashion. In Windows XP you could use IE's Options dialog, Programs tab, for this, but I'm not sure in Windows 7.
Since one possibility is a problem in your Firefox settings (including the possibility of interfering add-ons), and another is a problem at the Windows level (e.g., Registry settings), it would be useful to try to identify which one it is. One quick way to distinguish is to create a new Firefox profile. It will start up with all factory settings. You can switch back to your existing profile after testing.
First, I recommend backing up your Firefox settings in case something goes wrong. See Backing up your information. (You can copy your entire Firefox profile folder somewhere outside of the Mozilla folder.)
After closing Firefox, start up again in the Profile Manager as described in this article: Managing profiles.
With the new profile, can Firefox successfully create a message in Outlook?

• How do I display more icons on the New-Tab page? I tried about:config

The New-Tab page I see doesn't match what FF shows in help. I changed rows and columns and nothing changed.

Hello,
With the latest Firefox update, the number of tiles is now determined on screen size - if you zoom out or expand the window you can have more tiles appear.
If you want to set a fixed number of tiles, you can do so with the following extension:
* https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-tools/
You can also see jscher2000s Chosen Solution here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1025414
It requires the Stylish add-on but will automatically shrink the tiles on the page and will limit the tiles based on what you entered for your rows and columns in the about:config page:

Hi,
If your OS is Linux you can update Firefox using the Package Manager / Software Center. After opening the Manager type firefox in the search area, tick firefox in the results and apply. You may also be asked to accept additional new dependencies.
or
You can directly download the latest version for Linux here: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/
It is a zip package and you have to unzip it and run the script file named firefox inside the unzipped folder. You have to go inside this folder every time to run this file or you can create a link to the firefox file on the desktop. In this case please note that the old Firefox installation will still exist and the usual links will open that instead of the new one.

• I can't change ff start page. i edited options menu. i changed about:config /browser.starter.homepage but ff still opens with start page. i don't want this.

everytime i start firefox it opens on firefox start page. i don't want this. i want my own home page. i have changed it several times in 'options-general-when firefox starts...' but alas to no avail..it still starts up with the firefox start page. i have also gone to 'about:config' and changed the value of 'browser.startup.homepage' to my homepage. i restarted firefox and it worked...but just the once. the next time i opened firefox it started up once again with the firefox homepage. i have done scans, i have tried to remove the hometab with various anti virus/anti malware programms.. i have sieved through my registry..it doesn't matter what i do.. firefox starts up with it's own homepage which i do not want. please can you help?.. it's driving me nuts. i don't really want to have to reinstall firefox. thanks in advance x ps. firefox also keeps crashing on me :(

ohhh right!! i have been educating myself as i didn't understand what this user.agent.override.pref meant .. now i get it.. yes i will keep an eye on that when firefox next updates...at the moment everything is running smoothly so i'm going to leave it as it is for now. but at least now i know what it all means.. ahh you learn something new every day :-) thanks everyone x

• I enter about.config in my address bar and a page from SearchAssist - Landing appears with this message: "As a courtesy, your ISP provided this page because "about.config" does not exist or is unavailable." How can I reach about.config?

Details in original question above - maybe that's why response was that this question had not been asked before. I use very slow dial-up (DSL not available in my area) and I have a lot of computer problems as a result. So I'm not sure if this is because of my computer or if the page really is no longer available. Last time I reinstalled the OS I was able to access it and make changes (May 13-14). I need to reinstall the OS again but, if I can't access about.config, I won't be able to get the computer back to working the way I want (status bar at bottom of screen, etc.). Is there some other way I can try to access the about.config page?

• I want to change the file location for the automatic backup file bookmarks.file, but I can't find browser.bookmarks.file in the list on the about:config page.

I asked about automatic backup of bookmarks and received the following answer:You can make Firefox 3 create an automatic HTML backup (bookmarks.html) when you exit Firefox if you set the pref browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML to true on the about:config page. That backup is created by default in the profile folder as bookmarks.html, but you can set the file name and path via the pref browser.bookmarks.file on the about:config page. I went to about:config page and toggled browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML to “Yes” and it’s working. However, I want to change the file location, but I can’t find browser.bookmarks.file in the list.

The browser.bookmarks.file preference does not exist by default. Right-click in about:config and select "New > String" to create it.

• We are using version 3.6 on several machines. Is there a way to restrict users from accessing the about:config page?

Prevent users from making modifications to the about:config page?

You can do this with the Public Fox add-on.
It can be used to password protect access to about:config. To prevent the user from disabling/uninstalling the add-on, it also allows you to password protect the add-ons manager. You can also lock down other parts of Firefox such as the options dialog and clear history.

• I am using Aurora, but I can't find out how to ask a question for it and not firefox. My real question is how to reach the about: config page in Aurora.

For some reason, Mozilla Support has no section for me to ask a question about Mozilla Aurora. I need to know how to reach the about: config page in Aurora and no one has apparently asked this question before. Someone please help me on this issue because no one seems to know

Note that your System Details List shows that you have a user.js file in the profile folder to initialize prefs each time Firefox starts.
The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created this file and normally it wouldn't be there.
You can check its content with a plain text editor (right-click: Open with) if you didn't create this file yourself.
The user.js file is read each time Firefox is started and initializes preferences to the value specified in this file, so preferences set via user.js can only be changed temporarily for the current session.

• I used the suggested about:config solution for a way to revert from this abysmal new download thing to the old page. the page pops up , but remains blank

as I tried to state in the sentence above, I vehemently hate the new download system and want to revert back to the old downloads page popup
I read a similar question and tried the about:config solution given by corel
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/955204#answer-422863
the old page pops up like it used to when I download something but remains blank
so all the solution did was remove any means of monitoring download progress
how do I revert it correctly ?

You can check the <b>browser.download.manager.retention</b> pref(s) on the <b>about:config</b> page to see if it has the default value 2.
