About connecting my time capsule to a wireless network

I have bought a time capsule but as my place isn't ethernet-able, how can I use the time capsule as a "wifi acceptor" to connect with my wireless network, and then boardcasting wifi signal to my devices? I have tried the extending a network option, after it restarted and I can't even search any base stations. Can anyone suggest me a solution to that? I really need to do so although I know that this isn't a purpose of using the timecapsule. In other words I'm trying to make the time capsule as a wireless modem to connect to another wireless network, in the mean time boardcasting wifi signal to my devices.

Problems using time capsule to extend wireless network

Hi all,
For some months I had to move to Germany for work (I'm from Italy, sorry for my English).
I am sharing internet with some other people, the wi-fi router is in their apartment, so basically I don't have access.
As the signal is strong enough only in one room I would like to use my time capsule to extend it also in the other rooms.
But when I try to extend it, my macbook pro connects to the network I would like to extend and the time capsule is not seen anymore.
To see the time capsule again in the airport utility i have to reset it to factory default.
Do you have any idea?

Apple's "extend" feature will only work if the Time Capsule is "extending" the wireless signal from another Apple wireless router. In other words, the "extend" feature is not compatible with wireless routers from other manufacturers.
You will need to connect the Time Capsule to the wireless router using a wired Ethernet connection. Connect from one of the LAN <-> ports on the wireless router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule. Then, you can configure the Time Capsule to provide a separate wireless network for your use.

Not sure what you mean here.
A reset will not affect any of the data on the Time Capsule hard drive. You would have to perform a completely separate and very deliberate Erase Disk operation for that to occur.
I'm not recommending that you perform a default reset, but it is an option if there is really nothing else to try.
I don't know if what you are seeing is a Mavericks issue or not, since I refuse to use any new software until at least the first major update with fixes comes along.
Another user may be able to offer more input on Mavericks.

Replace the Time Capsule with one that has a larger hard drive. Or erase the one you have and start a new set of backups or backup one of the computers to a different backup drive.

No you can't join a wireless hotspot with a Time Capsule directly via it's 'join' option (tried and failed - well to be exact it kinda works but the Time Capsule's ethernet ports no longer work).
What you can do is buy an airport express and use it's 'join' option to connect to the iPhone's hotspot. Then you connect the airport express via ethernet to the time capsule (in bridge-mode).
You can then connect your computers to the time capsule via ethernet or use it's wireless function to set up wireless network (with a different name to that of the hotspot) that your wifi stuff can connect to.

At the Apple Store they told him that there was no need for him to buy a AirPort Extreme Wi-Fi Card, because I already have Time Capsule and through it I could connect my Mac Pro to my wireless network at home. You seem a little confused. The Mac Pro must have a wireless card installed inside and connected properly. Then you can wirelessly connect to that Time Capsule.
If you do not have the card installed inside that Mac Pro then figure a way to run fast cat ethernet cable to the Time Capsule.

Time Capsule on Existing Wireless Network

My niece will be going to college this fall, and her dad bought her a Time Capsule. Her dorm will already have a wireless network. How can she use the Time Capsule on an existing network and still have some security?

Using an Ethernet cable, she should connect the Time Capsule directly to the Mac's Ethernet port and backup files that way. The Mac will not be able to connect to the Internet when the Ethernet cable is connected and backups are running.
If the Time Capsule is configured to "join" the campus wireless network using wireless only.....which is not supported by Apple..... then backups must occur very slowly over that "public" network. Definitely not recommended.
If is not too late to return the Time Capsule....there are better, and less expensive options here.

Airport Time Capsule to join wireless network

Hi there,
I just bought a new Airport Time Capsule 2 TB because my old one suddenly died. I just can't join my existing wlan network, it won't find it in the settings. I use a Macbook pro with the latest OS, a D Link router/modem AC1750, a Windows laptop and Iphone 6. All are connected to the D link router without problem but I can't get the Time capsule to work with it. Any help and advice would be appreciated!

It used to be possible to configure the Time Capsule to "join" an existing wireless network, but Apple took away that feature several years ago when the Lion operating system was introduced.
The only exception to this would be if the Time Capsule is extending an existing network provided by another Apple router.
You will need to connect the Time Capsule to one of the Ethernet ports on your D-Link router using a permanent wired Ethernet cable connection, as the Setup Guide illustrates.

The Time Capsule can be configured to "join a wireless network" so backups will occur over the wireless network that is being provided by the wireless router in the other bedroom.
Things will be fine as long as there is a strong wireless signal where the Time Capsule will be located.
But...the Time Capsule cannot "extend" the wireless network or provide more wireless coverage...unless...the other router is also an Apple product.

I've seen a few similar discussion threads and seem to suggest I can't do this without an Apple Router, but I just want to clarify:
I have a 3TB Time Capsule, I want to connect it to my existing Wireless Network so that I can set it up with Time Machine.
I have connected it to my current router (which is AT&T, not Apple) via an ethernet cable that's plugged in to a LAN port on the router, and the WAN port on the TC (I also tried this in a LAN port on TC but it didn't seem to make a difference).
I was able to find my TC on Airport Utlility, but when I try to select the Join Existing Network option it just keeps bringing me back to the Create New Network screen.
How do I fix this? Does it really need to be an Apple router? Am I just plugging the ethernet into the wrong port? Or should I just continue in the Create New Network screen and enter the same name and password as my existing network, or would that create a duplicate network?
Honestly I don't really care about extending the network or not, I just want to be able to wirelessly access the Time Capsule to use it with Time Machine.

i'm assuming this is the new 3tb tc AC or 'tower' shape, if so, its wifi will run circles around your at&t device
unplug the at&t box for a minute and plug it back in
factory reset your tc - unplug it, hold down reset and keep holding while you plug it back in - only release reset when amber light flashes in 10-20s
connect the tc to your at&t box via eth in the wan port, wait 1 minute, open airport utility look in 'other wifi devices' to setup the tc
create a new wifi network (give it a different name than your at&t one) and put the tc in bridge mode (it may do this automatically for you, but you should double check) under the 'network' tab
login to your at&t router and disable wifi on it
add new clients to the new wifi network, and point your Macs to the time machine for backups

What's the best way to use Time Capsule through Extended Wireless Network?

I am operating four computers, three Apples and a PC. All the Apples use Snow Leopard. I have a large house where the cable company's modem and internet access is located downstairs at the far back of the house. That is where I have a 2Tb 802.11n Time Capsule (TC) connected to the modem by ethernet cable. My iMac is there, connected to the TC by ethernet cable. In the middle of the house, also downstairs, I have an Airport Extreme (802.11n) operating as a wireless bridge. Upstairs in the front of the house (very far from the TC and closer but not very close to the AE) I have a home office. That is where my other two Apples--a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air--are usually located. The PC is located in a bedroom directly above the TC and wirelessly connects to it. At all locations, I get four radio signal strength bars. However, I am not sure that the AE is doing anything, because I get four bars regardless of whether the AE is plugged in, or not. When it is turned on, Airport Utility on all computers shows both the TC and the AE, but I have not been able to find which Airport ID I am actually connected to.
From my home office I do temporarily lose my internet connection from time to time each day, but the connection recovers usually within seconds. I assume this reflects occasional interference or other loss of wireless signal in the distant home office, although I do not see the radio bars diminish to less than the four bars.
All three Apples are set up to use the same TC for backup into Time Machine. However, I have been getting errors on the laptops operating in the home office (a long way from the TC and perhaps connecting directly over wireless or perhaps wirelessly through the AE bridge. Some messages are to the effect of being unable to backup, and others more recently report errors. I think that either due to connection interruptions or merely by suspending or turning off the computer while in the middle of backing up, errors in the Time Machine files were created. I have been unable to delete more than a few of the 8Mb sparsebundle bands so that I can completely get rid of one of the sparsebundles for the MacBook Pro. I was able to get rid of the other sparsebundle for that computer and also the sparsebundle for the MacBook Air. I am reluctant to erase the entire TC, because it has been working for the directly connected (by ethernet cable) iMac sitting right next to the TC.
So, I am wondering what is the experience of others who are trying to use TC successfully from computers located a long distance from the TC with either a direct wireless connection or a bridged wireless connection through an AE or other bridge.
And does anyone have good ideas about how to delete the sparsebundles effectively? I read the various questions and answers in the support community, but so far nothing that I have tried based on those messages seems to work. It seems that when all the Time Machines are set to "Off" and the sparsebundles are expanded to show the individual bands, we ought to be able to delete them fairly expeditiously. Sometimes, I can delete one band fairly quickly, but then the second band will hang forever. More often, I can't even delete the first band.

Thank you, Bob. I followed the procedure you stated. My AE is working. I did register its BSSID when I put my laptop next to it. This is also the BBSID I am getting when in my home office at the far end of the house from the TC. This means I am using the extended bridge AE when working and trying to use the automated backup feature in Time Machine. Do you think I should turn off Time Machine on these laptops when they are in the home office, and bring them into the room with the TC occasionally to have a better connection (wireless to TC or by connecting an ethernet cable) when trying to make Time Machine backups for them?
Interestingly (in contrast to the exact match of BBSID's for my AE), when I compared the BSSID for my TC in Airport Utility to the BBSID of the TC using the option key and the fan shaped Airport icon, the BBSID's matched except for the last two digits. In Airport Utility, they are 2F. In the fan shaped Airport icon they are 30.
Also, the AE signal, being centrally located on the first floor of the house, seems to be the one most in use. When I walked my laptop away from the AE all the way back to the TC, the laptop automatically switched over to the TC only once. Most of the time, the laptop is still connecting wirelessly with the AE. To switch back to the TC, I have to turn Airport off, and then turn it back on again.
I don't know how efficient or inefficient the Time Machine is when connecting to the TC indirectly through an AE bridge.

Time Capsule - Extend a Wireless Network Disappeared

I was going in my Time Capsule settings within the Airport Utilities... I wanted to extend my wireless network so I clicked on this option. When I clicked it... the Time Capsule restarted and now is not showing up in Airport Utilities and there is a flashing amber light on my TC. Any way I can remove the extend my wireless network and put it back to Join a Wireless network?

We need a bit more information to understand your setup.
What version of AirPort Utility are you using? If you are not sure, open AirPort Utility and click on the AirPort Utility menu at the upper left corner of the screen. Then click on About AirPort Utility. Post back with the version number that you see there.
The Time Capsule cannot "extend" a wireless network unless it is connecting to another Apple router....an AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express, or another Time Capsule.

Time Capsule in existing Wireless Network

I've got an existing WiFi network: it is a DSL modem/router (Netgear). And I've got several computers connected to the Internet from this AP.
Now, I've recently purchased a Time Capsule so that I can perform back-ups of my MacBook Pro. But I want to know what is the best way to connect the new Time Capsule, giving the following requirements:
I don't want to share the data on the Time Capsule with all other computers. For now, this should just be for my own back-up.
I want to preferably transfer/access the capsule at the best performance rate, i.e. 5GHz., and wirelessly.
I want to try not disrupt any of the other people who is currently connected to the existing wireless network.
The Netgear AP I've got at the moment is operating at 2.2GHz over the g/b mode.
What options do I have? From what I've read so far, I see two opttions, but let me know what is the best, or also, if there are other better options:
Connet the capsule to "join" the existing wireless network. However, my question is, then at what speed would by MacBook be accessing and transfering to the capsule. Would it be bottlenecked by the existing wireless router at 2.2GHz?
Or, Connect the capsule to create a new dedicated network operating over 5GHz (only) on the N-mode. This would be in bridge-mode, where the existing router would handle DHCP, etc.
Could someone please advise what's the best course of action, that would give best performance and why? My understanding might not be complete about what I specified above, but if someone could please guide, it would be appreciated. thanks.

Connect the printer to the USB port on the Time Capsule and make sure everything is powered on.
On your Mac, open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
Open Print & Scan, or it might be Print & Fax depending on your operating system
Click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list on the left side of the window
Hopefully.....your printer or printer family will appear in the next window
It is does, click on the name of the printer to highlight it
Click Add at the lower right
Try to print a test document
Be sure to select the correct printer location when the print dialog appears. If you previously printed when the printer was connected directly to the Mac, it will appear as if you have two of the same printers installed.
A careful look will reveal that you have two printer "locations"...one at the Mac and the other at the Time Capsule. You have to choose the correct "location" at the Time Capsule
You may need to power off the printer again and restart it if printing does not work on the first try.
You will need to "install" the printer from each Mac that you have when you try to print.
If you have any PCs, you will need to download, install and run Bonjour Print Services for Windows v2.0.2 to select the printer and "install" it on the PC.
