About:Conversion Softwares

I would like us videomakers to discuss about the best video converter you use to kick your video from a codec/wrapper to another.
The point of this is to have a small handful topic for people wondering about video converter - which, why, how much .. oh wait it's free? .
The purpose is also to refine the reviews about the mentioned applications, and of couse discover new ones
Here are the softwares I use often use:
*Freebies :)*
FFmpegX - Free, open source, although shareware. But, the good part of it, it will always works fully. It can converts to and from many types and wrapper, including FLV (Google Video's, Youtube's, etc.).
It can be a little confusing sometimes, and it requires three componments you have to fetch (but hey, google's your friend right :)? )
FFmpeg - mentioning the componments, here's FFmpeg, the command-line app that makes run the previous app. This one though require a command-line knowledge, but works a helluva faster (about 5 times, from someone's experiment).
iMovie - Of course, iMovie can be useful to convert some videos. It uses Quicktime as base, so if you want to export using some Quicktime plug-ins, it will work. Cons is you have to import the movie in iMovie before exporting.
JES Deinterlacer - Sorry to say I don't know much about it. All I know is that is uses Quicktime's processing too, but if you like JES Deinterlacer's interface better ...
MPEG Streamclip - Ha this one too is nice Useful converter with many options, like trimming cutting or joinging movies. Can also directly convert from a Youtube or Google Video (or any internet Flash-based video in fact) by just typing the URL Address. Did I mention it has a big pack of format supported?
mConverter - Has proved itself unsuccesfully working with me. Perhaps some will have a better chance?
*Not free :*
Compressor - Comes with the Final Cut Studio package. I heard it takes some times, but the time is extremely well traded for quality (by example if you de-interlace the video).
Quicktime Pro - **** this is useful! To quickly convert a video, by example you need to send it to a PC friend who cannot play anything else than AVI, say, just open it up, export, smile. You're done. I'm happy with this one, as you can also add up plug-ins, which makes Quicktime export in virtually any format ever made.
Special:
Handbrake. The most useful DVD conversion software (DVD disc, and DVD folders, if you happen to have a dvd stored in folders in your computer). It uses ffmpeg at the base, and it does work extremely fast. It takes me about 45 mins to convert a 2h30 long movie to iPod high resolution format. (Mac Pro quad-core, 3GB RAM)
That is all I know for now. And I'm sure there are even more solutions, so that is why I created this thread, to find them of course
Behave good now everyone!

You can't really recover data from your reformatted mass storage unless of course you have a recent backup which you can use to restore to the phone.
With regards to applications, I would suggest you only reinstall what you use. I actually ake it a point to uninstall applications I don't use. There is no point tying up the phones already limited resources on unnecessary stuff. Tell us what you use and we could help you locate them.

  • Professional video conversion software that converts .mov to OGG Theora and/or WebM?

I'm looking for a professional grade video conversion software that can convert Quicktime (.mov) files to HTML5 video formats such as Ogg Theora and WebM. There are tons of free ones but I haven't found one that does a very good job. I've tried Bigasoft's converters but I'm a bit disappointed with their very basic quality settings. I'd like to have more control over parameters such as bitrates, variable passes, etc. Does anyone know of something like this? It's also hard to trust if some of the converters out there are legit.
    Thanks!

I just found out about Firefogg and it seems to be working well enough for my immediate needs. Still curious to see if there is anything better out there though.

  • HT1349 How do I go about installing software from a disc onto my ipad2? I have no external drive, but do have a PC with iTunes on it. Someone suggested I could load it into iTunes and then sync with the iPad, but this suggestion doesn't seem to work.

How do I go about installing software from a disc (a language programme) onto my ipad2? Someone told me if I downloaded it to iTunes on my PC I could then sync it to the iPad but hav not been able to do that.

Even if there was a convenient way, the software will not run on the pad.  Ios is a unique language, and only programs written for ios will run on the pad.   All of the programs are in the app store.  You might look there and see if the company that makes your sfotware also has an ios version, which would be in the store.

  • Fuji Raw Conversion Software as External Editor in Lightroom

Anyone know whether Fuji's Hyper Utility RAW conversion software (if I remember the name correctly) will work as an External Editor in Lightroom. (Just read an article by a Nikon photographer who uses Capture NX this way in Lightroom and wonder whether the same is possible for Fuji.)

Thanks; I guess my question (which I did not state clearly) is whether if, at the end of processing in HV-S3 and "Save" the saved file (likely a TIFF) will automatically appear in the Lightroom Library associated with the original RAW file; this would be the chief advantage over just opening the folder with the file in HV-S3 to begin with, but it occurs to me that this may be a dumb question (as I've just downloaded and begun to use Lightroom and can't experiment with HV-S3 yet as it has not yet been released, but will be shortly). Thanks again.

  • I just purchased MBP and it is my first Apple computer. How concerned should I be about virus software and what do you recommend for security software?

I just purchased MBP and it is my first Apple computer. How concerned should I be about virus software and what do you recommend for security software?

    1. This comment applies to malicious software ("malware") that's installed unwittingly by the victim of a network attack. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the victim's computer. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it. If you have reason to suspect that you're the target of such an attack, you need expert help.
    2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user, but internally Apple calls it "XProtect." The malware recognition database is automatically checked for updates once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets (see below.)
It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
    3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been another layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't actually been tested by Apple (unless it comes from the Mac App Store), but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. For most practical purposes, applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed can be considered safe.
Gatekeeper has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could find some other way to evade Apple's controls.
For more information about Gatekeeper, see this Apple Support article.
    4. Beyond XProtect and Gatekeeper, there’s no benefit, in most cases, from any other automated protection against malware. The first and best line of defense is always your own intelligence. All known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and the malware attacker. If you're smarter than he thinks you are, you'll win.
That means, in practice, that you never use software that comes from an untrustworthy source. How do you know whether a source is trustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
Pirated copies or "cracks" of commercial software, no matter where they come from, are unsafe.
Software of any kind downloaded from a BitTorrent or from a Usenet binary newsgroup is unsafe.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. If it comes from any other source, it's unsafe.
    5. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was never a good idea, and Java's developers have had a lot of trouble implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style "virus" affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful. Fortunately, Java on the Web is mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it — not JavaScript — in your browsers. In Safari, this is done by unchecking the box marked Enable Java in the Security tab of the preferences dialog.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a specific task, enable Java only when needed for the task and disable it immediately when done. Close all other browser windows and tabs, and don't visit any other sites while Java is active. Never enable Java on a public web page that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, password-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be practically as safe from malware as you can be.
    6. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good, if they do any good at all. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use the free software ClamXav — nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial "anti-virus" products?
Their design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere.
In order to meet that nonexistent threat, the software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
By modifying the operating system, the software itself may create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
    7. ClamXav doesn't have these drawbacks. That doesn't mean it's entirely safe. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
ClamXav is not needed, and should not be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful only for detecting Windows malware. Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else.
A Windows malware attachment in email is usually easy to recognize. The file name will often be targeted at people who aren't very bright; for example:
    ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥!!!!!!!H0TBABEZ4U!!!!!!!.AVI♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.exe
ClamXav may be able to tell you which particular virus or trojan it is, but do you care? In practice, there's seldom a reason to use ClamXav unless a network administrator requires you to run an anti-virus application.
    8. The greatest harm done by anti-virus software, in my opinion, is in its effect on human behavior. It does little or nothing to protect people from emerging threats, but they get a false sense of security from it, and then they may behave in ways that expose them to higher risk. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.
    9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.

  • Conversion software from labview 4.0. to labview 8.5.1

We have some programs written in Labview 4 that we need to run on Labview 8.5. In the Labview upgrade notes, I see that I have to contact NI for conversion software. How do I access this conversion software?
    Thanks

This has been asked now for umpteen no. of times by many people.
What you can do is either contact NI directly for conversion or post your code here (if they are relatively small) so that someone will convert it for you. FYI, LV 8.5 & above will open VIs only upto version 6.0. It wont open codes developed in previous versions below than that. So, your original older codes need to be opened in some intermediatory LV version between these two, so that they can be opened in LV 8.5.1 or above.

    Hello, Stephen.
Thank you for the question.  You will need to rebuild your iTunes library file in order to open an older version of iTunes.  Below, I have included the article that walks you through this process.  Start with the section labeled Re-creating the iTunes Library file.

  • I would like to know about conversion exits.

i would like to know about conversion exits.

    Hi,
Under Domain of a data element of a field, Output Characterestics field 'Convers. routine' is used to create conversion routines, system will do the data changes with in these routines while storing the data into table and retriving the data from table.
Ex: if coversion routine is defined as 'ALPHA' for a standard domain , with this value system will create two function modules.
    CONVERSION_EXIT_ALPHA_INPUT
    CONVERSION_EXIT_ALPHA_OUTPUT
you can also create your own conversion routines by defining the value in this field. i have defined conversion routine to convert NUMC type data to DEC type data with 'ZCNV'.system will generate two FM's. you need to write the code in those FM's according to your logic.
see the code for this :
    CONVERSION_EXIT_ZCNV_INPUT
    FUNCTION CONVERSION_EXIT_ZCNV_INPUT.
    ""Local interface:
    *" IMPORTING
    *" VALUE(INPUT)
    *" EXPORTING
    *" VALUE(OUTPUT)
    DATA : ws_output type numc10.
    ws_output = input.
    output = ws_output.
    ENDFUNCTION.
    CONVERSION_EXIT_ZCNV_OUTPUT
    FUNCTION CONVERSION_EXIT_ZCNV_OUTPUT.
    ""Local interface:
    *" IMPORTING
    *" REFERENCE(INPUT)
    *" EXPORTING
    *" REFERENCE(OUTPUT)
    data : ws_value type dec12.
    ws_value = input.
WRITE: ws_value TO output DECIMALS 0.
    ENDFUNCTION.

  • Is it okay to ask opinions about other software programs?

I was just wondering if it is appropriate and not a violation of the terms of use to ask other users about particular software programs for macs. I see people suggesting things in relation to solving problems, but I do want to make sure that its also okay to ask about specific programs. For example, I am looking for a program to convert photos to cross stitch patterns and have found only a few that will work on a mac. I am not familiar with any of the software developers and since it involves not only paying but downloading I am always cautious (probably too much). The ones I am most familiar with are only available for PCs and I'm not going to load windows just for this since it isn't essential, just something I want.
    Thank you

I am looking for a program to convert photos to cross stitch patterns and have found only a few that will work on a mac.
My wife would be interested - can you provide a link?
Good place to look for software:
    http://www.macupdate.com/
And for free alternatives to some popular software packages:
    http://alternativeto.net/
    Or of course, Google.
As for opinions, if you find something of interest, go to the developers' website and see if they have a forum: that can sometimes be very enlightening!
But if go to the forums here applicable to your operating system and ask 'does anyone know if this works?' I don't think you would be shot down in flames!

  • Video conversion software recommendations. MOV to MPG, WMV

Can someone please recommend an inexpensive video conversion software package? I'm trying to convert a QTMOV to MPG or WMV for Windows users without QT installed. Any help appreciated. I'm a recent Windows convert.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Quicktime Pro ($30us) is an excellent value video tool which can handle editing, layers, transparency etc etc. It can export to a variety of formats (although not WMV for obvious reasons). I'd be tempted to wait a couple of months though as QT8 will probably be around soon and will require a new key to be bought.
Also check out these applications on MacUpdate.
