About defrag of oracle data files(*.dbf)

When I use windows defragment tool or o&o defrag server defraging drive C on which I put oracel data files(*.dbf),the two tools prompt oracle data files can not be defraged. And I neither can defrag oracle data files with the two tools afer disable all oracle services and reboot the server. Please tell me why?The second question is : First, I shutdown oracle and move oracle database to drive D.Second,I defrag drive C with spatial mode(full defrag),and move back oracle data files. Please tell me if this is right? The third question is :I disable all oracle services and reboot the server. Can this completely shutdown oracle? And what is the better way?
Thanks for your answer and help very much!!

1. I never seen problem with defrag when the database is down.
By the way, put the dbf files on the drive C: doesn't seems a very good idea... at least I wouldn't advise that. It's better to separate the OS host drive and the application data.
2. It seems odd workaround.
3. If you set the service as automatic start, reboot the server doesn't help to shut the database down. It will restart after the server reboot. If it's your own computer to host a training database, I would set the service as Manual start.

    Dear Gagan,
I would not go for restarting the DB before finding out the root cause. I meant, the reason for restarting DB ?
    Dear Tom,
I have tried with the full path, but the result is the same.
            Regarding to the dbv help,
            1. The data file is exists.
            2. The data file is not end with .dbf
I tried the same command in other system, the particular data file able to be verified.
            3. How do we justify whether the data files are being locked or not ?

  • Reducing oracle data file sizes to a bare minimum

    Hi,
How can I create an oracle instances with minimal file sizes ?
Using the database configuration wiz, i've specified 10~20mb sizes for SYSTEM01, UNDOTBS01 etc. but when the instance is created the files were still huge :
    SYSAUX01 was 83MB,
    SYSTEM01 was 256MB
    UNDOTBS01 was 158MB
The only files that seems to have complied were the redo log files.
It's a testing environment that's constantly restored so i'm trying to fit the files into a ram-disk (using imdisk) in favour of performance.
The data required/created by each test is not large and because it's only a testing db reliability/consistency is not an issue - rollbacks are also minimal (i've set the retention at 15 secs so far)
So if anyone can shed some light on how to keep filesizes to a minimal, I'm all ears.
If there's a way to run without some of these files, i'm keen to hear too =)
    Thanks

  • QUestion about the Explorer for Data Files on Zen X

I would like to put some of my school document files and architectural drawings onto the Zen Xtra as a Hard Dri've, but do I need to install the CD that came with it before I can actually put files onto it's

    Hey,
Unfortunately, the Zen does not show up as a dri've when you plug it into the computer (it's not just the xtra, the touch doesn't either), I understand the plight that you're going through. You will need to use the intallation disk to install Nomad Explorer because you can do a transfer like that. I shows up as an item in my computer, Once it finds the player there will be a music folder and a data folder, just open the data folder and drag and drop. Hope this hel
    ps.
I have a school laptop where all my files are but unfortunately I don't have admin rights so I can't intall the software/drivers so I use my home network and cds as well as my flash dri've to move any new files over to my home desktop to transfer to my zen. It works well for a weekly backup, that sort of thing...Sorry but you'll have to use the install disk. As long as your an admin, no prob.

  • Can we store ORACLE DATA and LOG files in seperate file system

I am installing NW2004s in HP UNIX Server with Oracle database
I have selected the option as custom
I would want the SAP datafiles to be stored in /sapdata  file system
Log files to be stored in /oraclelog file system
While installation SAP is just asking me for the location of SAP data files. It is not asking me for the location of the log files.
(It is asking me for the location of control files)
Hence as per my understanding the oracle log files can be saved only in  the same directory as oracle Data file.
    Please confirm

I have heard reports of people that made some kind of synchronization between AD and OID, but I have no hands on experience with this. There are some notes on metalink that describe the process, but I try to stay away from AD as far as possible (I usually work on unix or linux environments and those don't really mix with AD).

    I've finally solved it!
I downloaded the following jre from blackdown:
    jre118_v3-glibc-2.1.3-DYNMOTIF.tar.bz2
It's the only one that seems to work (and god, have I tried them all!)
I've no idea what the DYNMOTIF means (apart from being something to do with Motif - but you don't have to be a linux guru to work that out ;)) - but, hell, it works.
And after sitting in front of this machine for 3 days trying to deal with Oracle's, frankly PATHETIC install, that's so full of holes and bugs, that's all I care about..
The one bundled with Oracle 8.1.7 doesn't work with Linux redhat 6.2EE.
    Don't oracle test their software?
Anyway I'm happy now, and I'm leaving this in case anybody else has the same problem.
    Thanks for everyone's help.

  • Oracle 11g unreasonable large data file that can't be shrunk

I got this Oracle 11g installed on my win7 just for running my local application. In the Enterprise Manager the "USERS" tablespaces shows over 12g for allocated size, about 1g for Space Used(also see the table snippet below), only about 8% of space is used. However, when I tried to shrink the data file/space even to half of its current size, both from command line(resize) and Enterprise Manager, i got the error that says "Failed to commit: ORA-03297: file contains used data beyond requested RESIZE value ". I was able to resize my TEMP tablespace successfully with the same command.
Any insight on this? thanks a lot. I'm about to run out my hard drive space.

You have an object stored at the end of the datafile, you will need to move it down the file (or to another tablespace) before you can shrink the file. I though OEM had a "tablespace map" feature to help you see what objects were located where but if not, see:In EM (or 10g dbconsole, at any rate), you select a tablespace, drop down menu Show Tablespace Contents, then there is a tablespace map icon to expand the map. It can be slow. Then you can scroll down to the bottom, scroll up and look for where the last non-green extents are. Also, you can find the beginning of datafiles (if you have multiple data files in the tablespace) by watching for purple header blocks. Hovering over the segments gives information, and clicking on them (or selecting segments in the contents list up above) shows where all the extents are in yellow. I haven't tried the reorganize link...

I want to read or extract data in a txt file from Oracle Dump (.dmp) file without using Oracle sqlPlus or Oracle Database.
No need to say that i am able to extract dump data using sqlPlus. But for that, there is a little burden to install oracle database
    or sql Developer.
I also listen about Oracle Loader a little bit. Is it a tool for providing extraction of data from Oracle dump file.
    Thanks for your previous reply,
And now waiting for your suggestion.
    thanks,
    mohan

  • How to load a huge data file (export from mysql) to an oracle table?

I have a data file which contains 1.3G bytes table data from mysql. It's format is csv.
How can i load these data to an oracle table in java way?
I thought about using sqlldr. But it requires a oracle client which may not be permitted in my environment.
If i generate "insert " statement and use batch update the batch update will stop if it comes across an exception when executing the insert one by one. I find no "insert ingore" statement in oracle like mysql.
Is there anyone can give me a solution with high performance? It's urgent and Thanks!

Why must it be a Java way? The point is just to move the data.

Why not just import the .csv file into Oracle? I'm sure there's a script or utility that will do it.

You want to turn off transactions? I'm not an Oracle expert, but I'd be shocked if there was something you could do in MySQL that didn't have an analog in Oracle. Find a better resource, like somebody that actually knows Oracle. Who set up that database for you? Consult with them.

  • How can i convert data from DBF to oracle database 10g?

    Sir,
How can i convert data from DBF to oracle database 10g?

I assume you at least know how to dump the contents of foxpro dbf file into CSV format.
Regarding SQL*Loader, hope this demo makes it a bit clear to you...

I agree that it is an old web page (references Oracle 8.0.5) but basics remain the same.
If it is still unclear to you after referring above link, then get an Oracle consultant.

  • What are the real data files of an Oracle installation?

When I install an Oracle (XE) database then a lot of stuff is copied/setup:
*.exe, jdbc driver, service tools, scripts, config files,....
But which are the real data files (under WinXP)?
I mean the files where all the individual, personal table defintions, trigger code, inserted data records are stored?
As far as I heard these are only 9 files.
    Is this true?
What, if I copy just these 9 files to another Oracle XE installation on another computer and replace the 9 files over there?
Is all the content available at the remote computer after restart?

What, if I copy just these 9 files to another Oracle XE installation on another computer and replace the 9 files over there? No. Oracle is far more complex than that. The control file keeps info about the data files, including stuff like the last checkpoint scn, etc. If you just drop a new file on a different installation, even if the file has the same name and is in the same path, it won't match the info in the control file.
That's not to say there aren't ways to move a data file from one installation to another. But it is a lot more complex than simply dragging a file from one folder to another.
