About finding good compression settings to email clips

Hi all,
I want an easy way to email something I'm working on, usually anything upto 60sec.
Copying some of settings the edit assistants use to email to clients here's whast I'm doing:
Aiming for end size of clip to be near to but not much more than 5MB.
Use Sor 3 at 426x240 (for 16:9)
22.050 16bit mono audio
I thought I could use these settings for all clips, then I could limit the size for different durations by changing the data rate.
I thought if I divide 5000 by the number of seconds of the clip it would give me a data rate in K/sec that would then keep the size around 5MB.
I wondered if I've got all this right? or if anyone had any other tips?
Doing some tests I found 60sec @85 K/sec gave 4.9MB which sounds about right.
But 60sec @ 250 K/sec gave 8.3MB which is less than I thought. (the edit assistants tell me they often use 250 K/sec for 60sec and get 5MB!?)
Can anyone explain this to me?
As I say, the aim of all this is to able to quickly work out settings that will produce an emailable QT.
Cheers

Forget it.... I know this sounds harsh, but it's the only honest answer. CoDecs that use variable bitrate allocation, variable temporal spans and multiple levels of spatial compression are literally mathematically unpredictable - you don't know the result until you have run the clip through the algorithm. The effective data rate too much depends on the picture content. That's why in encoders it is always called "target bitrate", not final output bitrate. Only CoDecs that use fixed matrices, regular intervals and clearly structured visual compression algorithms can be calculated such as MPEG-2 and H.264, but even there is always a minor variability and uncertainty. It may not be convenient, but testing out settings for each clip is pretty much the only way, if you need to achieve a specific file size. As a rule of thumb you could base your guesstimates one third below the desired size/ data rate, i.e. if you need 5MB files, target your settings at 3.5MB.

  • Finding good plugin settings

After purchasing Logic Pro, I was surprised the setting choices that came with plugins (EQ, Space Designer, etc...) were not very realistic. A Piano in a Space Designer "Piano Concert Hall" sounds more like it's in outer space. The EQ setting for piano also sounds muffled and unrealistic. I've been able to play around with the settings to make them more realistic, but I was wondering if there is a forum somewhere where people post their plugin settings. It would be nice to share in all the hard work it takes to fine-tune these settings.
Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I did take the time to visit the spamgourmet site and have to say it really sounds like a great idea!
But anyway yes, we welcome all of your Logic presets: plug-ins, channel strips, Environments or song templates... and we already have about 40 of those files posted by members. I'd actually like to hear your enhanced piano sound preset.

  • Still cant find good export settings for clean blacks/fades...

I have been a professional videographer for years now working full time and STILL dont have default export settings that will give me nice clean footage. If its just straight footage without any fades to black, cc, or that kind of thing then im just fine. but in my current project i fade to black a couple times and fade back into my footage to create dramatic pauses, but the fades are always very pixelated, and if i darken footage, i can never get clean blacks, even if my iso is at zero, i always get tons of artifacts in my export even though it looks fine in my viewer before export.
im using a 7d with cs6 and have done tons of searching for people's export settings and have tried all of what ive found but none have helped. mostly i hear h.264 for codec and target/max bitrate at 5-10 / 10-30.. lots of variation there but either way, nothing works. doesnt matter what level i put it at, even at 5.1..
looking for export setting for a clean master cut thats not going to be 7gb for a 1 minute thing that will play back on my computer..
to make it short - how do i export to get clean blacks/dark areas and smooth fades?? THANKS

    >My movies are in native MOD files. I convert em by simply changing the extension to mpg
You are starting with compressed files... and then you compress again... that is a DOUBLE hit on quality
You might try some other software (no, I don't know which one) to edit your files and export without re-compressing

    Hi there,
Download a piece of software called TinkerTool - that might just solve your problem. I have used it myself to change the system fonts on my iMac. It is software and not an app.
    Good wishes,

No, dude, if this guy can use it, so can most of his other neighbors. Let's point out a few things:
    1. This is very poor security, not to mention irresponsible of the neighbor to open his wireless to every person and pervert in his neighborhood!
    2. This guy still has NO control over who's using is, so of course bandwidth will be affected
    3. Until the neighbor locks it down to just 2 people, of course it will be slow
Let's start using our brains before we have the poor guy start deleting plists, getting the apple broadband utility, rebuilding his O/S, reinstalling the combo updates and/or repairing permissions (good one!) .... he simply has NO control over the speed of that which he's using/stealing.

  • I cannot find my download I downloaded from an email, how do I go about finding it

I am having a problem finding a download that I downloaded from an email how how do I go about finding it..... HELP!!!!

If you purchase ebooks on the iPad you need an app in which to read them. If you downloaded the book from iBooks, it would be in the iBooks app. If you have the Kindle app you manage your content from your Amazon, com account using a web browser. If it is a Nook Book, you need that app as well but I think you would have to access them from your BN account using a web browser as well.
From where do you buy the book? What I am leading up to is that you cannot download content from an email on the iPad like you can do on a computer.

If you call any company you do business with, that protects your information, you generally have to provide an account number and some other type of information for that company to verify your identity.
I don't choose to live in bubble of paranoia. No, I don't give my info to every Tom, Dick, or Harry that calls me - I am actually much more wary of people that call me - but when I call a business I expect to provide some type of identifying infomation.

  • TS3899 I can't find the 'sync settings' in the mail settings to limit the number of emails in my account

I can't find the 'sync settings' in the mail settings to limit the number of emails stored on my ipad.

That option depends on what kind of mail account it is. On an Exchange account, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Tap the account and you should see "Mail days to sync." If that option isn't there, you won't be able to change it. You could always clean up your inbox on the server.

    '''''"... I have about 20 bookmark folders and about 100 bookmarks altogether. " '''''
Firefox doesn't store bookmarks like that, sound like a Windows / IE favorites scheme used for '''''url''''' files and folders which isn't directly compatible with the way Firefox does things. Firefox uses a '''json''' file for bookmark backups, a '''bookmarks.html''' for import and export is bookmarks, and stores the users bookmarks in the '''places.sqlite''' file, along with browsing history.
Put those folders and bookmarks in the '''\user\Favorites\''' folder so they are in IE and export your IE Favorites in HTML format, so you can import them into Firefox.
    In IE:
File > Import/Export - Export to HTML file

  • Extracting information about image compression settings

    Hi,
Is there any way using SDK 7.0.5 to determine what image compression settings were used for color, grayscale, and monochrome images for a given pdf file?
Also, is it possible to determine which color management policy was used?
    Thanks,
    Daniel Sheiner

Okay, Distiller was a bad example. The same range of settings are available for exporting PDFs from Word. What if someone converted a Word document to a PDF?
Supposing some or most of the information I'm looking for is lost, how much can I infer? For example, if a given PDEImage has the PDEColorSpace DeviceRGB or CalRGB, that at least tells me the user didn't select Color Management Policies -> Convert All Colors to CMYK. It would actually be tremendously helpful if you could tell me which other ColorSpace names, if any, would indicate the user didn't select Convert All Colors to CMYK.
It would also be quite helpful to know if there is some indirect way to determine that a given color or grayscale PDEImage has not been compressed using ZIP, or that a monochrome PDEImage has not been compressed using CCITT Group 4.
    Thanks!

I have Final Cut Pro X (10.0.9) and would like to change my project settings but I am having trouble finding the 'Modify Settings button.'  Where exactly is it located?  Here is the link which gives the instructions but doesn't seem to say where the 'Modify Settings Button' is located: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12526?viewlocale=en_US

You have to choose – one settigf or another.
The thing is.your HD clips will look better in an SD project than your SD clips will in an HD project.
WIthout knowing much more about your project and the kind of content, it's really hard to be specific. But generally I'd let my project settings be guided by what fraction of my timeline will be made up of HD clips and how much SD clips. If it's 75% HD, I'd probably do an HD project…and so on,
    Good luck.

  • Compression settings for G3 playback

Greetings, I'm using EyeTV export to convert recorded clips to QT movies. Although I'm working on a G4, the QT movies will be played on a G3 iMac. I have discoverd altready that the default compression settings create a movie that the G3 can't handle (it jumps frame by frame). It is suggested that I try other compression settings. I would like to, but I don't know anything about this subject.
For reference, The default settings for export to QT movie:
type MPEG 4 video (there are a lot of other options)
    frame rate 29.97 fps
compressor quality high (on a slider from least to best)
data rate automatic (it can be restricted to some kbits/sec instead)
Please can someone suggest which settings I might change and in which direction to achieve G3 playback. Video quality does not need to be great, I accept that there is a tradeoff.

Thanks. After some experimenting, I found that export as Quicktime movie as H 263 seems to play on the G3 with good video quality.

  • IMovie compression settings?

I just made a 3 minute movie using clips from my iPhone. When I exported, the file came out at about 40mb. Is this normal?
When I use "Export using Quicktime..." I have many compression settings. What is a general rule of thumb for making files that aren't too big, yet have some semblance of quality? And what format is recommended (most universal)?

De-interlacing will get rid of the lines...
...took me years to figure that out...
you should have that option on most of the compression methods..
here's what i most commonly use...
    Under Expert Settings:
    Movie to Mpeg-4
    ...click on options...
    File Format: Mp4
    Video Format: H.264
Data Rate: 1500kbps (you can bump this up to 2000 if you want... beyond that there's not really a noticeable difference...)
    Image Size: 640x480 VGA
(if you have a widescreen project then Preserve aspect ratio using: 'Letterbox' (give black lines at top and bottom) or 'Fit within Size')
    Frame Rate: 30
Keyframe every 24 frames is fine.... for super high action, you can do a smaller number...
then hit ok, press save and then let it crunch through the numbers...
if you are having problems with lines in your video, you may want to use similar settings,
only save it as a quicktime movie... with mp4 or H.264 encoding... etc... and once you've chosen your settings, click the 'size' button underneath 'Video:' and select "De-interlace source video"
    Good Luck!
    -Nate

  • Ideal compression settings

I'm trying to make a DVD with DVD Studio Pro 4 which features a 109 minute movie and the option of commentary over it, along with about 20-30 minutes of Special Features. Basically exactly what you might find on any Blockbuster rental DVD. However, I can't find a compression system that allows this much footage to fit on a DVD. None of the Pre-set "DVD: Best Quality 120 min" or anything even allow a 109 minute movie to fit, let alone everything else...
Is there something I am missing? Considering that Compressor is part of the same "family" as DVD Studio Pro, it seems like they ought to work better together to make the "standard" DVD...
And if there is not a pre-set setting that works for this, does anyone have any suggestions about what settings to use? I am working with an action-adventure movie using DV footage and want the best quality possible.

Commercial DVDs are often dual-layer which means that they can contain almost twice the data that will fit on a single-layer DVD-R/W. This means that commercial DVDs can place more video on a single disc or can use lower compression levels (higher bitrates) which will result in better quality.
Also, the "DVD: Best Quality 120 min" preset will hold 120 minutes of video/audio only when you select the Dolby/AC3 audio option. Otherwise, that preset when used with uncompressed PCM/AIFF audio will only be able to place about 90 minutes of combined video and audio onto a single DVD.
Given that you are apparently using Comressor 2, I'd suggest that you create a one-pass non-VBR preset at a data rate around 4Mbps (that should allow for about 140 minutes of video with compressed Dolby/AC3 audio). Next option would be to use a one-pass VBR preset with a target of 4Mbps and a maximum of perhaps 7Mbps. The reason I'm suggesting that you don't use two pass VBR is that Compressor 2 seems to have intermittent problems with its VBR output (notable digital compression artifacts in areas of high motion -- and in a highly unpredictable manner -- some areas will be okay, others will look notably degraded -- you'd have to carefully review the entire movie to make certain that there weren't problems).
Generally speaking, the one pass and particularly the two pass VBR presets should produce the best quality at any given target or average bitrate. However, you may find that Compressor 2 doesn't always deliver the expected benefits from VBR.
You may also want to try one of the bitrate calculators that are available on the internet. Here is one to try (there are others):
    http://www.customflix.com/Special/AuthoringNightmares/03/BitBudget.jsp
In any case, there is really no "ideal compression setting." It depends upon the nature of your source video, the delivery mechanism, the target audience, and to some extent the skill and experience of both the videographer and the compression/DVD technician (including the software/hardware used to actually author the DVD).
