NOWAIT | WAIT
The NOWAIT and WAIT clauses let you tell the database how to proceed if the SELECT statement attempts to lock a row that is locked by another user.
Specify NOWAIT to return control to you immediately if a lock exists.
Specify WAIT to instruct the database to wait integer seconds for the row to become available and then return control to you.
If you specify neither WAIT nor NOWAIT, then the database waits until the row is available and then returns the results of the SELECT statement.

  • DOC BUG 4.2: About On Demand Application Processes

There is an error in Oracle Application Express Application Builder User's Guide Release 4.2 §8.8.1 "About On Demand Application Processes":
An On Demand process is special type of application process which has a Process Point of On Demand and executes when called from a page-level On Demand process or from an AJAX call from the browser. On Demand processes are useful when you have PL/SQL logic that you would like to run from different execution points across multiple pages.
On Demand processes should typically be created on a page and not at the application-level. On Demand processes created at the application-level are created with an initial authorization scheme of Must Not Be Public User. This prohibits the processes being invoked from users in authenticated sessions.
As it is perfectly possible (and indeed desirable) for On Demand application processes to be invoked [only] by authenticated users, this should presumably read:
An On Demand process is special type of application process which has a Process Point of On Demand and executes when called from a page-level On Demand process or from an AJAX call from the browser. On Demand processes are useful when you have PL/SQL logic that you would like to run from different execution points across multiple pages.
On Demand processes should typically be created on a page and not at the application-level. On Demand processes created at the application-level are created with an initial authorization scheme of Must Not Be Public User. This prohibits the processes being invoked from users in unauthenticated sessions.
Furthermore, the second paragraph is a new addition to the documentation for APEX 4.2. What is the reasoning for not creating On Demand processes at application level? I have used them for a number of years as a means to provide reusable, application-wide components (for example, file downloads and AJAX content) only to authenticated APEX sessions.

    Hi,
thanks again. I added a note to the 5.0 docs.
It is certainly fine to still create application-level On Demand processes. However, if a process is related to a single page only, it is immediately clear that the process is part of this page's interface. This is good from a maintenance point of view, because if you only use app-level processes, it can be harder to determine whether the process is still in use and where it is called from.

    Christian

  • Demand for oracle dba

    Hi,
I've heard from many people that the demand for Oracle DBAs in the market is getting down and will continue to degrade. Is it true?
    Waiting for reply.

Is that [DBA 1.0 or DBA 2.0|http://blogs.oracle.com/certification/docs/Oracle%20DBA%202.0.pdf]?
The market is down in general. Who knows what the future holds. Normally it's a bit like the past with some minor changes.

  • What's the best approach for handeling about 1300 connections in Oracle.

What's the best approach for handling about 1300 connections in Oracle 9i/10g through a Java application?
1.Using separate schema s for various type users(We can store only relevant data with a particular schema.     Then No. of records per table can be reduced by replicating tables but we have to maintain all data with a another schema     Then we need update two schema s for a given session.Because we maintain separate scheama for a one user and another schema for all data and then there may be Updating problems)
    OR
    2. Using single schema for all users.
Note: All users may access the same tables and there may be lot of records than previous case.
    What is the Best case.

  • About pessimistick lock in Oracle

    Hello,
I have some questions about pessimistick lock in Oracle:
I know if i do a SELECT..FOR UPDATE statement, those records are locked, and just me can opperate on them.. but me - WHO? How i'm identified in Oracle? If i do a SELECT..FOR UPDATE select in an A procedure, then i call the update procedure B, how can i know that both calls belongs to the same user? If someone tries to update the same records, how the server knows if that person is allowed to make those updates or not? because everyone uses the same connection string.. isn't it?
Probably it works if i make a SELECT..FOR UPDATE and i make the effective update in that procedure, but this means that the Business Logic is in that procedure..
Please correct me if i'm wrong somewhere and clarify me.
    Thanks!

  • Only showing "about on demand."

The only option available on demand is "about on demand." When I select it, it takes me to a submenu where it says things like buy shows and movies, install adapters (twice), and install xfinity TV (twice). no matter which option I select, it says this is only available with HDTV service. The only thing it'll let me watch on demand is the welcome video. Even xfinity my account is only available with HDTV service. It was working last time.

Apologies for the issue and the experience that you described above.  I have asked a colleague to review your account and reach out to you so that we can get any underlying issues identified and resolved.
    Thanks for your patience.

  • What about future of Oracle Forms Developer?

I heard, in future entire Oracle Apps will be in Java and Jdeveloper tools without Oracle Forms. In that case Oracle Forms will not stand as a stand alone tool for development. Now a day even small companies also prefer ERP solution. So what will be the future who is fully working on Oracle Forms and Reports?

Thnaks... But still I couldn't see anyone saying
Forms is forever. In future it will be supported by
Oracle but not recomended by Oracle is it?Then again ... J2EE is not 'forever' either.
The moment anyone comes along with and interestng tool set and enough money to do some serious marketing, you will find a lot of people who will jump to it, simply because it resolves some of their problems. (But not all!)
I started working with Oracle Forms 2.3 and have heard an almost annual 'Forms is dead' since 1993. Fourteen years later, those who claim 'Forms is dead' are still looking for replacements of their favorite substitutes of Forms (such as PowerBuilder)
My recomnmendation around Forms - as with all technology - is simple: if it (Forms, J2EE, whatever) works for your purposes, use it. Your app will need revising inside 5 years, and you can re-evaluate the technoloy at that time.

  • Questions about divulging information about future features

    Good morning,
I'm making my way through this thread for the first time.
As someone who has passed the California Bar and who has been a stockbroker in the past, I would like to comment on the statement of Steve Forde, who was the Senior Product Manager for Visual Effects for Adobe for portions of 2011.
    Steve said,
"Unfortunately - we get stuck in a legal pinch about commenting on ANYTHING that may or may not be in future products, off the record or otherwise."
I'm asking that you consult your internal SENIOR legal counsel again regarding this statement that you assert prohibits you from giving any details whatsoever about what the Adobe Team may or may not aspire to having in future versions of After Effects.
I'm asking this of you for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, no attorney denies that the law changes over time and recent court decisions have made shareholder derivative lawsuits much less popular as a way for the plaintiff's bar to make a quick buck by extorting money from companies who may have made aspirational statements to shareholders or others in conference calls or elsewhere.
As I understand the current trends in Delaware Law, (which, as the situs for quite a few corporations governs large swaths of their conduct) as long as appropriate disclaimers are clearly communicated at the time of the aspirational statement, such language is now permissible.
Such standard disclaimers could include language such as
"we cannot guarantee whether any feature discussed will appear within one year or within five years or whether it will ever appear at all.  It is currently a goal of the design team to reintroduce this feature, but we reserve the right, in our exclusive discretion to change that decision for any reason whatsoever, without consequence.
Additionally, you are vested with no rights to rely on any assertion or representation made based on any such aspirational statement and we insist and demand you consult an attorney before embarking on any course of conduct, such as purchasing stock or altering any current or projected business plan, based in any manner upon what we say here.
However, given the above caveats, it is the current goal of the Adobe design team to reintroduce this feature within the next three releases of AE again, subject to change at our sole and exclusive direction in any manner, time or mode of our choosing, without prior notice of any kind."
If you had a standard disclaimer such as the above that you attached to any and all such statements (by having it appear within the signature block of any Adobe employee posting to this forum), it could take conversations such as this to a more rewarding level for both Adobe staff (who could share their very profound dreams and aspirations with us) and the Adobe community at large, which provides inspiration and helpful feedback to Adobe employees seeking to assist us.
Then the focus could shift to whether or not you were divulging trade secrets.  But it would still permit you to be more informative in a general way.
So I ask that you run this by your SENIOR legal counsel again.   Remember, just as there can be different ways to tackle the same 3D graphics animation challenge, each with rewarding results, attorneys similarly can vary from attorney to attorney and new and bright ideas on how to approach such issues do occur from time to time, especially in light of the massive favorable swings in case law supporting the rights of massive global corporations such as Adobe viz a viz the rights of the little guy.
    Sincerely, Matt Dubuque
Here is Steve's quote in its entirety, from May 26, 2011:
Unfortunately - we get stuck in a legal pinch about commenting on ANYTHING that may or may not be in future products, off the record or otherwise.
That being said, as Michael explained in a previous post, Vector Paint got stuck in the conversion of AE to 64 bit.  It's something we hear quite a bit from our users that Vector Paint is important.  Again - wish I could give you more than that, but we are bound by very strict rules.
Therefore - it is important to us, and the more we hear via this form the more likely it is to get resources behind it in a future release. Again I realize it is impersonal, but the results of this form are sent via email to a real human every time someone hits submit; then that person brings the results of submission to a weekly meeting on the AE team where we discuss features and scheduling.
    Steve
Sr. Product Manager - Visual Effects
    Adobe Systems Inc.

Attaching an appropriate disclaimer may be fine for an attorney to dot all the i's and cross all the t's, but there is one thing it will NOT do: it won't stop people from misinterpreting what they read.
Most people go by what they PERCEIVE to be true and not the ACTUAL truth, a fact that people in marketing like me deal with all the time.
Steve Forde might write the following totally hypothetical and totally fictional line in a blog:
"We're thinking about a feature for a future version.  Right now we call it the Clean Plate Generator.  You would be able to shoot a single clip, panning and tilting the camera as desired, and After Effects would automatically create an image whose total size matches the totality of the image shot in the clip.  It would even remove selected foreground subjects such as a stray person who inadvertantly walks into the shot."
Sounds great, yes?  And with your proposed disclaimer, all would be good; Adobe would have covered its corporate pink posterior.  Or would it?
Do you wish to speculate how many people would read that as a statement of a definitely-going-to-be-there feature in the next AE version?
Can you imagine the can of worms that would open when this fictional feature isn't in the next version?
Would it really be worth the massive and expensive fence-mending campaign Adobe would have to undertake among angry users who were erroneously looking forward to this fictional feature?
All of which could have been avoided simply by not saying a word?
I can see where attorneys may like a hypothetical situation as the one above: they could charge more billable hours!  I doubt Adobe would like it, however.
Legalese is one thing, maintaining happy customers is another, and there is no amount of legalese that can overcome people's nasty tendancy to perceive what they read as what they WANT to read instead of what is actually written.
If people would read what was actually written, there would be far fewer posts in this forum that say in essence, "Hey, how come it takes two weeks to render ray tracing on the brand-new HP student laptop  I just got from Wal-Mart?"

  • Is the future NoSQL? Oracle RDBMS downwards?

I invest a lot of free time in preparation for "Oracle Database 11g Administrator Certified Associate" and "SQL Certified Expert".

I wish to use the gained know how for at least 35 years! You are in the wrong industry. In the IT field, 35 years is an eternity. Going back 35 years from today would be 1977. The PC doesn't exist. It's a mainframe world.
You should become a geologist. Rocks don't change much. Geologists think in terms of 100,000 years and up.
I attended an Open Source conference and those presenters said that NoSQL is the future. I went to a Honda dealership a few weeks ago. They said Toyotas are passe and Hondas are the future...
If anyone at an OpenSource conference said anything but that... it would be because they brought the wrong notes for their speech.
They said nobody will use proprietary RDBMS in about 10 years.Very Very Very unlikely. Companies that use Oracle tend to have enterprise-class databases. They have a huge investment in technology and personnel and time in their current system. You don't just decide one day to throw all of that away and change to something completely different. I can't really say what reasons your lecturers gave to suggest that they would because I wasn't there. However, when you have millions of dollars invested in a system, there has to be a compelling reason to change. Heck -- there are still businesses using systems developed in COBOL of all things because of legacy investment in it.
That's really bad news. Will my know how be useless in 10 years?Maybe. If the Mayans put out an updated calendar that says the world will end in 2023.

  • About spfile creating in oracle 10g while creating a new database

    hi everyone,
i had this problem while i was creating a new database in oracle 10g.when running the database script, it gives an error about invalid option for create temporary tablespace. is it necessary to have an spfile created in 10g. when the script was not working,we tried to create spfile which gives error tht it does not match the parameter db_name. its taking the default db_name=orcl itself..tis not taking our new db name.
im creating it manually through sql prompt not through DBCA.the problem is that its still accepting the default db name. please send me the solution with syntaxes.
    thanx

first of all, thanx for giuding me as im a student doing a course in this
what abt the creation of spfile.. in a documentation for steps in creating database, they have mentioned it as recommended in creating spfile.here are some notes regarding this ....for oracle 10g
Step 5: Create a Server Parameter File (Recommended)
Oracle recommends that you create a server parameter file as a dynamic means of maintaining initialization parameters. The server parameter file is discussed in "Managing Initialization Parameters Using a Server Parameter File".
The following script creates a server parameter file from the text initialization parameter file and writes it to the default location. The script can be executed before or after instance startup, but after you connect as SYSDBA. The database must be restarted before the server parameter file takes effect.
-- create the server parameter file
    CREATE SPFILE='/u01/oracle/dbs/spfilemynewdb.ora' FROM
    PFILE='/u01/oracle/admin/initmynewdb/scripts/init.ora';
    SHUTDOWN
-- the next startup will use the server parameter file
    EXIT
the error : db_name does not match with the parameter.
its still taking the default orcl database name

  • About nested tables in oracle 8i

    hello,
actually i am working with oracle 8.1.5 's nested tables
    concept...
here is a description of my tables
    create type parameterranges
    parameter_name varchar2(20),
    min_value number(10),
    max_value number(10)
create type parameter_ran as table of parameterranges
    create table material_details
    mat_type varchar2(20),
    parameter_ranges parameter_ran
    okay...
now my doubt is how do i place constraints on the nested table fields i.e on min_value etc...(especially NOT NULL
    constraint)
    DOUBT NO 2
    =============
I have a query to find out the mat_type,partno from material_details table Based on the parameter value and its min_value ,i.e based on some name value pairs which I am achieving as below .
    select m.mat_type,m.partno
    from material_details m,table(m.parameter_ranges) p
    where p.parameter ='THICKNESS' and p.min_value = '1'
    and m.mat_type='STEEL'
    intersect
    select m.mat_type, m.partno
    from material_details m,table(m.parameter_ranges) p
    where p.parameter ='STANDARD' and p.min_value = 'SAE1010'
    and m.mat_type='STEEL';
Now I want this to be in a cursor..i.e I want to use the same set of rows returned by the above in another query involving another table .
That is using the multiple mat_type and partno returned from above I want to find out
Other fields (company, plant) from another table part_details which also has a nested table in it
How do I go about this???Actually I want to use these in a PLSQL procedure where we can have row by row control of the rows returned ,that is why I want a cursor.......
could u think about this too...and if possible mail me at my yahoo id ..
    thanx once again
    please reply to my id

  • A problem about Ms Sql 7 - Oracle 8.1.5 ?

    hi
I used OMWB to migrate MS sql 7 to Oracle 8.1.5, both of our env are on chinese character set,it worked well. Thank OMWB work team. The whole process of migration did't meet any problem. But I met a problem about character set,I don't see right content on CLOB column, all data in CLOB columns are like the following something :
    0F5C3A53A44E1A904575BE8FBF4F776302303052FD56388D01303100380006529F943052B065164E
I maped text datatype of SQL to CLOB datatype,I can see the right data directly in SQL by select command, but I can't see the right data in SQL*PLUS.
How can I do? Migration workbanch don't support the multi-bit char set such as chinese?
    null

I already knew the solution of the problem, but I met another problem.
I checked my sql 7 database again, I found large columns are ntext datatype. I changed the ntext to text and migrated data again. In SQL*PLUS ,I found the data of clob columns change to '????.?-?'. I know this is caused by NLS_LANG, my NLS_LANG=simplified chinese_china.zhs16gbk. How do i set my nls_lang to get the right data?

Here in my country(Peru) the pay per hour is almost 5.9 to 6 US$ (a total per mounth is

As you can see the standar level of salary is very low.
Even that level is considered "high" for our standars. (A Visual Basic /Sql-Server developer gets a 4.00 uS$ per hour).
I have seen (in the Oracle job postings page) amounts like 60 -50 US$ per hour for Oracle Developers.
So I have some questions for you , the real people who works in Oracle enviroments.
-That amounts per hour are really true?.
-IF its true (in countries like USA or CANADA) how much can I save ,having a normal life?
-In have passed the first OCP Exam,(3 left), but it is really necesary to get well-payed a Job?
-There are some many enterprises recruiting foreigners for IT jobs but (if somebody knows...),there are some good ones and the bad ones.Have you been heared about the bad ones,, and who are they??
    Please I need your feedback.
Its very important to me any suggestion or comment because I'm planning to work outside.

  • Question about advance compression in Oracle 11gR2

    Hi,
I am on Oracle 11gR2 on Solaris 10. I want to run the oracle advance compression advisor for my database and get compression ratios for the tables, how can I do it? I am looking for a sample command to run this advisor package (dbms_compression) from sqlplus.
    Can someone please suggest.
    Thanks,
    Nirav

Thanks SriniChavali and Stefan. I can't make more answer "Helpful' so I couldn't do that for your answers! Here is my point. In Jonathan's blog i see this remarks:
"Sadly it seems that “compress for OLTP” (formerly “compress for all operations”) doesn’t compress for all operations, it compresses only for inserts, and the benefits it has over basic compression are that (a) it leaves 10% of the block free for updates, and (b) it doesn’t require direct path inserts to trigger compression. Given the limitations on how it works you may find that the problems it brings might make it something you want to avoid.... this is at this link: http://allthingsoracle.com/compression-in-oracle-part-3-oltp-compression/
To date I’ve only heard complaints about OLTP compression (there’s an element of self-selection there as no-one ever calls me to look at their system because it’s running so well and has no problems). A common thread in the complaints I have heard, though, is about the significant amount of row migration (once it has been noticed), the extra CPU, and ”buffer busy waits”.
Compression for OLTP is (according to the manuals) supposed to be able to compress during updates – but it doesn’t (at least, as far as I can tell); this means that you can easily end up suffering a large number of row migrations on updates, which can result in extra random I/Os, buffer busy waits, and increased CPU and latch activity.
If you can work out a good strategy for using OLTP compression, though, think carefully about making a choice between freelist management and ASSM – there seem to be some undesirable side effects that appear when you mix OLTP compression with ASSM."
Note that I am not that technical and I hope I have not mis-quoted. I am trying to figure out if this is a good option or not and seeing some findings that it may not be so good and seeing at some other places notes that it is indeed very good.
    Best regards
