About getting a hard drive

Hi i have a compaq presario CQ50-228CA laptop. I was told by HB to get this hard drive: Hewlett-Packard (HP) 613070-001 - 250GB 7.2K RPM SATA Hard Disk Drive (HDD). This hard drive is expensive at a certain online site. I want to get a cheaper hard drive at another site with this info:  250GB Hard Drive RPM 5400 SATA for Compaq Presario CQ50-228CA CQ56-219WM CQ60-420US and I want to know if this hard drive will work on my laptop?.It mentions my model but HB give me the impression that i must get the first hard drive that i just mentioned. I never bought a hard drive before. I want to trasfer all data including windows vista from old hard drive to new hard drive with a USB adaptor but i don't know which USB adaptor i'm suppose to buy?. Thanks

You can buy any 2.5 inch wide 9.5 mm thick SATA hard drive and there are some really good deals out there right now. I suggest you go to newegg.com and order one (you will have it in like 3 days). and also get a "drive upgrade kit" which will have cloning software and the cables you need.
My humble recommendation:
320 gig 7200 rpm drive at 65 bucks shipped:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2W014P4564
Upgrade kit with external caddy and also cloning software:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817155602
With the rebates this is $100 total and your laptop will run faster, to boot.
This Manual (page 10) shows how to do the installation:
Drive Manual
Repeat: You do NOT have to buy from HP or use an HP Part Number hard drive. They are industry-standard generic items.

  • Getting the hard drive out of my dead laptop. Help!

My old laptop finally 'died' about a month or two ago. Last week, I ordered a hard drive enclosure from Amazon, and it came in today.
My [only] issue is that the screwdriver that came with the enclosure isn't removing every screw from the back of the laptop. I've only been able to move 4-5, and I can't remove anymore in my attempt to get my hard drive out.
Would it cost anything just to take my old laptop to Best Buy so that they can quickly retrieve my hard drive from my laptop? I mean, it shouldn't take more than a couple of minutes to do it, right? Would it cost anything?
    Thanks

Since apparently BBY doesn't carry these anymore... I have two sets of these, swear by them and always the first thing i grab if I need to take things apart.

You will need to use third-party software to transfer music from your phone to the iTunes Library. I recommend Phone to Mac - Pod to Mac | Macroplant.com.

  • About to format hard drive. How do I preserve I-Tunes?

    Hi,
*About to format hard drive. How do I preserve I-Tunes*
Apologies if this has been asked before, but I need reassurance that I will not make an expensive mistake.
I have iTunes installed on my PC, but the library and any original music files are stored on a NAS external device.
What do I need to do in iTunes (or anything else) before I reformat my PC drive?
In addition, I am guessing, but I figure that that afterwards I reinstall iTunes and reenter some settings and I can make connection with my Library again? Is that correct?
    Thanks in advance
    flobbyblob

Are you certain that the iTunes folder containing you library databases is on the external drive?
If you have the iTunes folder containing your current iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml in My Music on the C: drive, then you need to back that up.
If you are certain everything is on the external drive then all you need to do with your PC is deauthorise it before reinstalling Windows.
    You asked something else:
Yes after reinstalling Windows and iTunes, you redo the settings you used to connect to your library on the external drive. You will also need to reauthorise your PC.

If you registered your product, you should be able to find the download and serial number from your Adobe account.
    https://www.adobe.com/account.html
    Otherwise:
Download Adobe CS5.5 Trials: Direct Links (no Assistant or Manager) | ProDesignTools
You might still have to contact Customer Support to reset your Activations, unless you managed to deactivate the original installation.

  • How would I go about formatting my hard drive if my macbook is no longer working? Will I be able to do it on an older macbook?

My macbook became gradually increasingly unresponsive a few days ago, and at the moment, when I try to start up I get to type in the password, but nothing further happens.
I took it today to a laptop repair shop. He said the hard drive seems OK, but would like to wipe it and re-install the system. I believe this would indicate a software error. Would there be a way of doing this operation myself? What do I need to do it?
This Macbook was purchased about a year and 8 months ago.
I also have a macbook that was purchased 7 years ago, but are still working. Could I interchange the hard drives and do the job from there?
    Any advice is much appreciated!
    Kind regards,
    Oystein

Formatting a HDD will delete all user data on the drive.  Yes you can do it on an older MBP by connecting to it via USB, but do you really want to?  If the repair shop says the HDD is functional, there is no need to wipe it and reinstall the OSX.  The problem then is something else.
It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have.
    Ciao.

  • Hp 6310y can't get new hard drive to load windows 7

    model 6310y -- Windows 7 home premium 64 bit
My desktop PC stopped working.  I took it to local computer store and they said it was HD.  I bought new hard drive and tried to install retail Windows 7 home premium 64 bit OS.  I got an error message Code 0x80070002.
I called HP support....they told me I needed their brand of recovery discs because the motherboard or BIOS wouldn't allow me to install Windows 7 on the new replacement HD w/o it being their (HP) discs.  So I ordered them...$17
I bought another new HD and tried to install Windows 7 OS with the HP recovery discs.  This time got Error Code 0xe0ef000e.
I should mention both times trying to install OS on new replacement HD...it got approx 8 to 12 minutes into installation before getting error messages.
I called HP support....this time was told that the retail version of Windows 7 OS should have worked and that I didn't need the HP brand recovery discs when installing new replacement HD.   They offered me to pay $199 and send them my desktop to fix it....all inclusive fix.
Very confused.  I have never encountered anything like this before...I've had mulitple hard drives die over the years and have replaced them myself and installed all the software including OS myself w/o any problems like this.
Memory checked out ok when utilizing the diagnostics f9 key .... it did show problems with HD during one of my many diagnostic attempts
Not sure if its a bad motherboard or built in video card ..... not sure how to find out either....since I can't get the PC up and running
It will boot to blue HP screen & most of time won't allow me to get into f10, f9 or esc screens.
Not sure if its worth paying $200 to fix this or go and buy a new one for around the same price.
any suggestions or help is appreciated
    thanks

    1) A retail OS should have worked.  That particular motherboard's NVidia Sata controller chip had a bad batch. You need to make sure the hard drive is recognized in the BIOS. If not, nothing can be done.
    2) Their brand of recovery disks was wrong, and was acknowledged. What about your $17 ??
If you had either a retail OS, or the recovery Disks that you made, these are acceptable.
The HP version when used with a new hard drive require conditioning "CyberLink Recovery Discs utility resolves an issue where Recovery Discs sent from HP do not work on a new hard drive".

  • Questions about iomega external hard drive.

Hi guys, I own an iomega 1TB external hard drive. Till now I've been happy with it despite its fan tends to be noisy, but I'm facing a lack of space issue. Elgato's EyeTV pretty much took up most of it. Rather than buying a second hard drive I was thinking on replacing its internal disks. I opened it up and saw two 500GB with a connector I had never seen before. My question here is, if I bought two 1TB disks with the same connectors, could I just swap them? Would they work? Said new disks actually would come from a Sun's storage rack. Are disks compatible? I mean, would I be able to re-format it/them to be used with Leopard easily (like using the Disk Utility)? Would the iomega box recognize them and be able to handle them?
Once all above's sorted, I'll just have to worry about the data migration, which isn't any simpler at all. I know no-one who owns any storage solution that I could borrow to temporarily store all the data. And if go to anyone they might not have Mac-formatted disks.
Sorry if you think this post shouldn't be here. iomega won't help at all and I believe this Mac brotherhood can enlighten me through this odyssey.
If you need more info from both current and new disks I can email you pictures of the labels of both. Email me directly at [email protected]
    Thanks in advance.
    George...

All the commands remain grayed out when I click on various partitions. Maybe it's because I'm actually booted up on my external hard drive. I deleted several GB of files from my internal hard drive, but it still won't boot up. So it looks like I have a technical problem, and I'll have to visit my local Apple store. After I get it fixed, I'll take another look at re-partitioning my external hard drive.
    Thanks.

  • Problem after getting new hard drive

Okay, don’t laugh but I think I am using Photoshop elements 1 and yes it works on windows 7. The systems information does say something about version 6.1 service pack 1. Anyhow it has worked great for no more than I do.
Last week I had to get a new hard drive. Supposedly everything was “ghosted” over from the old to the new.
Now my elements work well until I try to save the edited image. I then get “Could not save as "C:\...\SANYO4b.jpg" because of a program error”.
I uninstalled and reinstalled. Same thing. I searched Google for over an hour and the only thing I came up with to try was to change all my scratch disks to C.
    Still no luck. Any ideas?

“If you right click on the Photoshop elements 1 shortcut and choose Run as Administrator, does the saving work?”  YES!
    Back to this “Permissions” Issue.
when I right click on c drive and go to
    properties-security i get
group or user names (and this info about them)
    authenticated Users- nothing checked
    system- full control
    Administrators (myname-PCAdministrators)- full control
User (my name-PC\Users) only has checked
    read and execute
    list folder contents
    read
The others (full control, Modify, write and special permissions) are NOT CHECKED.
Thinking this might be the problem, when I started to change the “User (my name-PC\Users)”  to full control I got the warning that “changing the root directory of the startup disk can result in unexpected access...etc.”
Could this be the problem and if so should I let those warnings about dire consequences stop me?

  • Should I get standard hard drive or fusion drive on a new 21.5" iMac?

I'm thinking about getting a new 21.5" iMac.  How do I decide whether to get the standard hard drive (5400 rpm) or the Fusion Drive?  Besides Web surfing and email, I would be using it to play flash games, listen to Internet radio, and stream movies occasionally on Netflix.

    @TmanW:
Technically you cannot control where data goes on the Fusion drive 100% of the time as in the case of a two drive setup (SSD + HDD), but you can tilt where the data goes by watching disk usage and also partioning. My understanding how the Fusion drive works from MacPerformanceGuide.com (where they tested the Fusion on a late 2012 27" iMac) is that as long as you do not have more the 112GB filled on the Fusion, the drive won't kick data to the HDD when peforming tasks that use more than the 4GB buffer. I interpret this to mean as long as I keep the capacity below this 112GB threshold, I am more likely to get SSD performance. And to keep things under this threshold, one could just use the Fusion drive for system and apps only and perhaps targeted file usage (working Photoshop files that would be transferred back to non-SSD storage afterwards).
MPG also tested the Fusion drive with a partition method that biases the first partition to be 2/3 SSD and in this scenario a user can effectively (though once again not 100%) target SSD usage most of the time.
Once I get my new iMac, prior to cloning my existing system on to the Fusion drive, I will see firsthand if these tests are true to form with their results.

  • Need help getting my hard drive data switched

I finally got a replacement hard drive from Hitachi today, and am anxious to fire up my copy of Leopard. However, I have to get the data from the tiny one in my computer right now to the large one I'm about to put in. I have an external hard drive to work with, but no enclosure. Does anyone know how to get my system data from my current hard drive to an external hard drive to another hard drive?
    Thanks

You need some way to connect the drive to the computer. Either an external adaptor or an empty enclosure you can put the new drive into. Once you have that, you can clone the internal to the new drive and then swap the drives.

  • Thinking about an Ethernet Hard Drive

This is also posted in the expansion topics.
I'm thinking about an external Ethernet hard drive for my iMac.
Have any of you tried one and if so what do you think about them?
Where will I get higher transfer rate Ethernet or USB 2?
Last question, will I be able to boot up from an Ethernet hard drive for running DiskWarrior on internal hard drive or for emergencies(cross fingers)?
Thanks for your replies in advance.

I'm going with a FW400 external hard drive as a primary backup for my iMac (speed), but I'm thinking about trying out the D-Link DSM-G600 Wireless Network Storage Enclosure as a third backup on a different power supply. Basically the DSM-G600 is a hard disk enclosure with gigabit ethernet (like the new iMac and PowerBooks), wifi and a USB port to expand the storage capability. I figure its a good cheap start to check out network-attached storage at home, and if its good I may either stick to it and add additional ones as my needs grow, or move up to that one NAS 4-drive unit that everyone raves about (lost on the make and model at the moment). There are lots of NAS enclosures out there, but the DSM-G600 is the only one I've seen under $200 with gigabit ethernet.
