  • What's this I hear about Gmail and the iPhone?

I have a gmail account with my iphone. I opened up a thread a few days ago saying something about gmail and the iphone (I didn't get to read the thread though) making it sound like the emails would get to my phone faster or something.
Anyone know what I'm talking about?

what you are talking about is called "pull", the phone pulls new messages every 15 minutes.
in "push" mode if someone sends you an email it is pushed to your phone instantly, you don't have to wait up to 15 minutes for it to show up.
you can find information about "push" vs. "pull" email on the internet (google works well for searching for information), wikipedia is especially handy:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push_e-mail
and here is info about gmail push:

  • I've been getting an error message about Gmail detecting a slow connection...

This started happening a couple days ago. When logging in to Gmail, there's a pause and the error message about a slow connection.
It seems to have started when Firefox was updated to v32.0

Do you connect to the web directly or through a proxy (a proxy could be a filter provided by your security software, or a VPN service, etc.)? You could experiment with your connection setting here:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Network mini-tab > "Settings" button
The default is "Use system proxy settings" which should use the settings in Windows/IE for your LAN connection. You also can try "No proxy" to see whether that helps.
    And... the usual suggestions:
When you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    (1) Bypass Firefox's Cache
Use Ctrl+Shift+r to reload the page fresh from the server.
Alternately, you also can clear Firefox's cache completely using:
"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Cached Web Content : "Clear Now"
If you have a large hard drive, this might take a few minutes.
    (2) Remove the site's cookies (save any pending work first). While viewing a page on the site:
    * right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
    * (menu bar) Tools > Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
Then try reloading the page. Does that help?
To rule out extensions as a possible culprit, could you try the site in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions, some advanced features, and some custom settings. More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either
    * "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
    * (menu bar) Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
Note: Flash and other plugins still run
After Firefox closes, a small dialog should appear: click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset)
    Any difference?

  • Another question about gmail

I just posted a question about adding gmail and it was answered.  Now, I have another question,  I added the new gmail account.  It shows in the mail preferences under accounts.  Incoming mail addressed to gmail comes to the Archive Box. But I still can't send mail by gmail because in the drop down menu on the email it only lists my other two accounts.  Gmail is not an option.  I highlighted gmail in the account list and it showed that as the account in use.  But, still there was no gmail option on the email form in the sender box.  How do I fix that?

You need to look at and read over these very carefully.

  • Please tell me some information about gmail

hi, everybody. I'm a long time OSX user but I never used the "mail." Now, I want to try mail with my gmail account but I found it's not that easy. First of all, what type of account is the gmail? IMAP, POP, or Exchange? Next, what is incoming mail server and outgoing mail server? Thanks so much!

Gmail offers POP, which means you can use Mail.app like a regular ISP account. If you need an invite to GMail email me at the address on http://Gnarlodious.com/
Once yiou have a Gmail address you need to enable POP (which includes SMTP). There is a help link on the GMail page that allows you to enable POP and other features.
Once that is turned on, you need to set up the Mail.app for downloading your mail (and uploading). There are excellent instruction pages on Gmail, which I believe someone else gave you.

  • Thunderbird erased many important, random emails from gmail and now they are not even on thunderbird. what do I do? It's been over 30 days.

I wanted to print all the emails from a gmail label. My googling suggested that Thunderbird would do this. I didn't see any warnings about Gmail's stealth setting that it would ERASE me emails from the server, but it did. And now Thunderbird has no emails in it, leaving me with years of lost work and pictures. It has been over 30 days since this happened, as I didn't realize it had happen as, oddly, it didn't erase all of the emails, just some (likely because Thunderbird crashed every time I tried to use it and didn't do a full pull of my gmail e-mails, but kept telling me it was out of space which it was not as I have a huge drive).
Does anyone have a suggestion regarding where I can find my e-mails? I tried to do a restore on my backup drive (where I had downloaded and used thunderbird) but it says there are no earlier versions. I am in the process of begging gmail to help me, but I don't know if they can.

Well, the only thing you can do is go to Gmail in a web browser and hope your e-mails are still on the server. If they were deleted there, then there really isn't a way to get them back. :(

  • Why does javascript fail to work at gmail on IBM AIX 5.3 and 6.1 systesms?

Sorry about asking this question again; but I have not gotten a responce
    in over 6 months.
Both firefox 3 and seamonkey 2 seem to have the same problem
on IBM AIX 5.3 and 6.1 systems.
If I try to login to gmail using their standard method (Not HTML)
I can not select any folder. If I select a folder firefox hang.
I just see a message saying "Loading".
I am also experiencing problems when I access my financial
    institutions (Online banking!).
I believe the problem is in the javascript implementation.
Not sure about gmail; but I do know that the problem at
my financial institusions sites has to do with executing
    a javascript.
"I really need some help. firefox and seamonkey are the
only browsers that have been ported to my systems."
If some one can tell me where to look or what is causing the
problem I can submit a problem report to IBM and have them
fix the problem in their version of firefox. So far IBM has not
been able to figure out what is causing the problem.
I really should upgrade to firefox 3.6.18 and seamonkey 2.0.14; but
I can not find a working version. The only thing that works on my
system is firefox 2.0.0.20 and seamonkey 1.1.18. I keep getting security warning when I uses these browsers.
I really would appreciate some help!

  • Problem finding Gmail website

Hello, everyone. I am having some issues with Gmail, and one of the possible solutions is to go to Gmail.com, under settings and change some label settings. The only problem is, when I go to Gmail.com, I get this window asking me if I want to sign up for gmail. I log in, then the only option is to manage my account, and there is nothing there about Gmail. Where do I go to compose email on Safari? This is a dumb question I'm sure, but I always use Mail to manage my email.

  • How to withdraw Gmail from iCloud account?

When I first created my Apple ID, I didn’t know anything about iCloud, so I entered my Gmail ([email protected]) as my primary mail.
After this creation Apple gave me iCloud mail ([email protected]/[email protected]) which now I want to use as my primary mail and forget about Gmail forever.
Problem is: I can’t remove Gmail from my Apple ID and use iCloud mail instead, using appleid.apple.com. I’m getting message that I couldn’t "use a domain owned by Apple".
My goal is to withdraw Gmail from my Apple ecosystem and use in it only iCloud mail as primary mail for everything: for login, for getting messages and notifications from Apple, everything.
Who can help me with that?
    P. S. The main reason is that I want receive important emails from Apple on my iCloud mail, not my Gmail, because I barely check my Gmail and almost forgot about its existence.
So if there is a way to make Apple send notifications not for primary email but for alternate—it would kinda solve my problem.

same here... i would love to get rid of my old gmail account and use my iCloud email address for this...

  • Gmail Folders

    Hi Everyone,
I know that there have been tons of posts about Gmail and the Playbook - it feels like I have read every post (on this site and others) yet I don't have a definitive answer to my predicament.
To put this succinctly; is it possible to have my gmail folder structure on my Playbook?  For example, I have a Gmail folder called "Hockey" where I keep all of my hockey related emails. I have set up my created my Gmail account on the Playbook and the only folders I see are;  Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash, and Outbox.
                         Thanks in Advance...Tom

  • Ical e-mail alarm and sending e-mails to self  will not sync with Gmail

Hello, my mac mail is not able to fetch a e-mail alarm sent from ical.
when the alarm goes off it is sent to my Gmail account and I am able
to view it in my browser but not in my Mail program on my Mac. Has
anybody else had or have this problem and is there anything to
rectify? it. I have spoken to Apple support and they seem to think it
is a Gmail issue. I am not able to fetch emails sent to myself in my
Mail program on my Mac either, I am only able to view on my browser.
All other emails are fetched properly. Perplexing!

I've had several clients tell me that they can't send from themselves - to themselves on a gmail account. They can see the messages in the gmail webmail interface, but the messages won't download to the mail program.
I suspect it's part of gmail's spam controls. It's a common spammer technique to send messages with the From: address the same as the To: address.
Another thought, hasn't gmail touted the user's ability to use the 5 or 7 GB of online storage? Maybe you use it by sending yourself an email and wouldn't want it downloaded back to your mail program?
Sorry for the lack of perfect information about gmail, I only set up an account so that I could help clients with it, not to use it for myself

  • Gmail appears in Mail 4.2 but is not in my accounts pane

Hi all. I will try my best to explain this weird little situation about Gmail in my Mail client.
Okay - I've just bought a 27" iMac running Snow Leopard and after the setup, I configured my Mail acounts. I have three accounts, one of them being Gmail, and after everything was configured, I started to get gmail mail from way back to 2007 and my inbox kept filling up with tons of old gmails.
Next, I deleted gmail from my accounts pane in Mail. It solved the duplicate emails issue fine. In fact, I still get current Gmail mail coming in, which is weird, as Mail is no longer set up to retrieve it.
Now this is my REAL question for this post: how can I compose a message using my Gmail address? I know that since the account is not setup in Mail, it follows that the address is not selectable from my drop down menu, however, is there a way of going back and setting up Gmail in my accounts pane without getting all of those old duplicated emails?
    Thanks so much,
    B.

You could do a search in Gmail itself, delete the old messages, and then re-create your account. Better yet, archive those messages, and then you'll have them in Mail if you need them, but they won't be cluttering up your inbox.

  • Best workaround for using Gmail to filter POP spam?

I have 3 POP email addresses and get hundreds of spam mails per day. Can't handle having to delete them manually on the iPhone. I tried setting my Gmail account to check my POP emails and setting up my iPhone with only my Gmail account. Now I get all my POP email without spam, but then I can only send using my Gmail address (which I never use and don't want to). Any suggestions for a workaround?

And the answer is… [according to David Pogue], columnist for the NY Times:
A Smarter Way to Fetch E-Mail
I know everybody's sick to death of hearing about Apple's latest i-product, so I promise not to even mention its name in this newsletter. But as I was trying to get my e-mail set up on that cellphone, I stumbled upon a delicious secret feature of Gmail, Google's fast, free, fantastic Web-based e-mail service. This is a trick that can help everyone, whether you have a cellphone or not.
One big drawback of the Mail program on Apple's phone is that it has no spam filter. That's not a big deal if your e-mail comes from AOL, Yahoo or Gmail, because those services have pretty good spam filters of their own. But if you have some other kind of account-like a standard POP account (provided by your cable company, for example), you may be overrun by junk mail.
I kept hearing from people who told me how they solved this problem: "Oh, I just forward my mail to Gmail," they say. "Then I set up my new phone to check my Gmail account instead of my regular address."
Well, all right; it's easy enough to make your e-mail program auto-forward incoming mail your Gmail address. But there's a huge problem with that setup: Now all of your messages appear to have come from you, the forwarder. If you hit Reply on your phone, the response doesn't go to the original sender; it goes right back to YOU! It gets sent back to your desktop computer (or whatever computer is doing the forwarding).
Clearly, that's no good. So I asked my tech guru, Brian Jepson, if there's any solution-and he told me about Gmail's new Mail Fetcher service. My problem was solved in five minutes.
In essence, this feature tells Gmail to fetch messages from your existing POP account, so that it all shows up at Gmail.com. Better yet, Mail Fetcher offers you the chance to have outgoing messages stamped with your regular e-mail address. In other words, Gmail.com becomes a free, invisible mail processing center, leaving no trace of its involvement. The people you correspond with will never know that their messages, or your responses, went anywhere but straight to your computer and back.
You can still check mail with Outlook, Mail, Entourage, or whatever program you're using now. But now you've solved the spam problem on your phone-and better yet, you can now check your regular POP e-mail-up to five accounts, in fact-at Gmail.com, from any computer in the world! Now, if all you want to do is keep in touch with e-mail while you're on vacation, you can leave your laptop at home.
Here's how you set up this free, no-downsides arrangement. Suppose that your real e-mail address is [email protected].
First, sign up for a free Gmail account at www.gmail.com.
Once your account is active, visit Gmail.com. Click Settings, then Accounts. Under "Get mail from other accounts," click "Add another email account." Fill the e-mail settings for your main address: name, password, mail server address.
If you like, you can also turn on "Leave a copy of retrieved message on the server." That means that you'll also be able to check your mail from Outlook, Mail, or whatever e-mail program you use, just as you always have. The Gmail account will just be a backup, a secondary, Web-based way to do e-mail.
As you complete the setup process in Gmail, a message says: "You can now retrieve mail from this account. Would you also like to be able to send mail as [email protected]?"
Click "Yes, I want to be able to send mail as [email protected]."
In other words, when you reply, your main e-mail address, not Gmail's, will be the return address. It won't matter whether you send from Gmail.com or from your phone; it will all look like it came from Outlook, Mail, or whatever.
You can add up to five e-mail accounts this way, consolidating them all in one place-a very neat trick. Gmail seems to check for new messages about every five minutes, and there's also a "Check mail now" button.
I know this is all sounds much more technical than my usual writings; there's no way around it. The bottom line, though, is that Gmail's Mail Fetcher system solves a big problem for smartphone owners, and-by making your mail available on the Web-another big one for travelers. Nice.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g Scan to gmail with 2-step verification

I have an HP Office Jet Pro 8600 N911g printer which is a replacement for another one. I am using gmail. I am seting up the Scan to E-mail. I put in all the required information asked by the wizard and when I test it, it comes back with "Incorrect credentials".  My gmail has a two step verification process where it will send a code to my mobil device. I remember setting the Outgoing E-mail profiles up on the previous printer before the replacement but I cannot remember how I got the "scan to E-mail" to work using the 2-step gmail verification.
Looking at another post about gmail I even click on the "Network" tab and changed the IPv4 DNS server settings to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
I checked and tested my gmail/Google to make sure that my gmail 2-step verification is working correctly.

Scan to email allow you to take a document that you have and send it wherever you want to send it as long as you have someone's email or you can send the document to your email.
Here is the solution to the 2-step verification with google's email.
Get into your google email. Click on your picture or name in the right-hand corner and click "Account". On the "Signing In" box click on "2-step verification". From there go to the App-Specific passwords tab.  Click "manage application specific passwords".  At the bottom chose mail, select device and then generate.  Follow the prompts and guidelines from that point.
