About iTunes File Size

In the finder my iTunes folder is just under 20 gigs, but according to iTunes I have about 13 gigs of music with only a few small videos, etc. Where is this 7 gigs going?

Possibly to the application itself and any artwork you've added?

Question about Domain file size...

I have a dot Mac account, and my iDisk capacity is 1 Gb.
As I regularly back-up my Domain file from my G5 iMac to a FW external drive that sits on my desk, I have just noticed that the file size is now just over 1 Gb.
Can someone please explain to me why I still have almost 700Mb left on my iDisk, yet my Domain file size is over 1 Gb?? Obviously, there must be 'internal' files that aren't copied to the iDisk.

Wow, that's quite a discrepancy. 1gb Domain vs. 300mb site? Well suffice it to say that the Domain file contains all the information that is needed to generate your site. But it makes me curious too why you have such a large discrepancy. Do you have a lot of video on your site?
My site is only about 50-60mb and my Domain is roughly the same size. When I first started using iWeb, I used to poke around inside the Domain file quite a bit more than I do now. You can open up your Domain file by Control-clicking it and selecting "Show Package Contents." At one point early on when I was blithely dragging and dropping stuff into iWeb and publishing just for experimentation, I noticed that even after I deleted images or EVEN WHOLE PAGES, that sometimes the Domain file would still contain images and quicktime movies left over from the deleted pages. I didn't know what was going on and actually tried to delete the "old" items from the Domain file, but I ended up with a non-functional Domain file...lots of error messages saying it was missing this and that. So I started over completely with a new Domain file. I also noticed at the time that my Domain file was several megabytes larger than my site.
Since then, I have been very careful only to drag items to iWeb that will actually be used. The Domain-to-site size ratio has stayed pretty much 1:1. So I chalked up my earlier experience as a fluke. I don't know. Maybe there is an inconsistency somewhere. In fact, do a search here on "Domain file optimizing" or "Domain file bloat" and you may be able to find my questions about the issue. I never did get any responses, though.

About database file size

Hi, I have created a database with size of 1000MB and log file1000MB by default.
After database created, my data load failed because the db size has exceed 1GB, I try to increase the size but not success.
Then I try to create a new database with 10000MB, reserve size is 10000MB also. Total of the db file is 1GB and log file also 1GB.
May I know if I want to add more size later, lets say 100GB after 3 years...can I add the file size? But my reserve size only 10000MB.

Central / Dbspaces / You_DB_SPACE / Files / Right Click / New File

About the file size of Default.png

Hallo forum members,
Is there a 2 MB restriction on [email protected] as there is on normal JPEG pictures?
When I save the [email protected] for a widget the filesize goes up to more than 2 MB, as I save the png with 24 Bit.
Using 8 bit depth to save file size the images show artefacts and color banding.

Perhaps the engineers should take time to read the Assett guide. As yet I have not found any engineers posts advising other than the assett guuide.. do you have a link for any?
Its always better to have higher resolution images than not, and as long as the end product comes with the 3.2 meg limit for all except the cover, its good for those not over familar with image ediiting.
The iPad retina screen resolution is 2048 x 1536 @164 DPI/PPI

ITunes file size.

When I import music from CDs, it seems that the file size is extremely large (300MB and more for a 10-15 song cd). I've changed the import encoder to mp3, but it still seems large. If they have been imported under another encoder, can I convert them to another format, a smaller file size without having to burn the cd again?

I agree. Using a Mini, you're probably limited to an 80GB drive so you may want to change the settings for your imports.
If you are just wanting average quality - make sure you are using 128 kbps stereo bit rate.
You may want to consider an external hard drive for your music. Lacie makes a great drive designed just for the Mac Mini:

As for converting, you can make your changes under preferences, then highlight the songs you want, right-click, and select 'Convert To' [whatever your setting is].

ITunes file sizes are double my new computer

I am hoping someone can help me. I recently got a new (to me) computer and I am loading my CDs into iTunes on it. They were previously in iTunes on my husband's computer. I noticed after about 40 CDs (550 songs) that they were half the space (4gb) of my 8gb iPod. I had 2100 songs on my iPod off my husband's iTunes. I looked that at the size of a CDs on his iTunes and it was about 50mb. The same CD on my iTunes is 110mb. It's the same version of iTunes and we're using the same import settings.
Also, I looked around all over the support page and there seems to be no way to get tech support from apple. We just use these forums and hope that other users know the answers to our questions, is that correct? Or are apple tech support people on here to answer out questions?

I figured it out. There was no iTunes Plus import setting on the version of iTunes he had back two years ago when I put all my CDs into his iTunes. So the files are in a 128mb import setting, even though it's set to iTunes Plus now. I couldn't figure out how to delete my post though, just edit it. Thanks.

What to do about iTunes files constantly disappearing?

Often, and more and more recently, when I go to my iTunes folders to burn a CD one of more
selections in the playlist are suddently "lost" (I'm a performer and a composer, and I often make CDs of my own works for demo). These are from Sibelius files, that I have to convert into AIFC format with a program named WireTap Pro, because Sibelius files are not properly formatted to convert directly into iTunes. (Does anyone know of a better way to do this than WireTap Pro?) Today I want to burn a couple of CDs and the first playlist contains 4 of 17 numbers that are somehow "lost" in the program. The only way to get them back in is to convert the Sibelius files once again to AIFC and then drop that icon into iTunes. This has often happened and now more and more.
Perhaps related: when the WireTap file is created, Quicktime opens although I DO NOT WANT THAT
TO HAPPEN! I think I've done everything in Quicktime preferences to prevent the program from
opening when I insert a CD, for instance, but these files are created within my G4, so the goddam
Quicktime keeps opening. As well, these AIFC files take up LOTS of space, so when I have dropped
them into iTunes I take the desktop icons to the trash.
SHOULD I NAME THESE FILES SOMETHING OTHER THAN .aifc WHEN THEY APPEAR ON THE DESKTOP?

Are the files truly lost or just that iTunes has lost track of them? I occasionally find iTunes has lost track of a file but I can use Spotlight to find it again (if it isn't in some logical location since I don't have iTunes automatically consolidate my music). If the tracks are misplaced you can re-associate them when iTunes asks you if you wish to do this when trying to play a track. If files are randomly disappearing from your computer you have bigger issues than iTunes not finding something!

File size of Notes on iPod nano?

my question is about the file size of notes to be handled by the iPod nano.
I have copied several ASCII text-files into the Notes folder of my iPod nano. Each has a size of approx. 20 kByte. Windows Explorer shows them in the iPod Notes folder with their original size.
However, when opening one of the text files on the iPod nano, text is only displayed until approx. 700 words (approx. 4000 characters), which corresponds to approx. 4 kByte. The larger rest of the file is not displayed, as if it was cut.
Is this an error?
Or is 4 kByte the max. size of text files which can be displayed as notes on the iPod nano?
I have updated the iPod nano firmware recently with release 1.1.

Using Examine Document Remove increases pdf file size !

I have Adobe Acrobat Pro v9.3.0
I've been editing a lot of scanned .pdfs - rotating and cropping pages.
All this has previously worked fine with v8 but now I find that Acrobat 9 is increasing the .pdf file size after using Examine Document and clicking Remove
For example:
original file: 16,861 Kbytes
file after cropping 74 pages (from A4 to A5): 16,879 Kbytes
file after running Examine Document > Remove cropped metadata : 79,914 Kbytes !!!
With Acrobat 8 this process would normally have halved the file size.
Am I now doing something wrong ??

I've got a .pdf created by an agency (so not a scanned image) which I want to make as small as possible for emailing to hundreds of people (I'll attach it if possible somehow ?)
I open it up when it's 331Kb
Click Document > Examine Document
Check the Metadata and Deleted/Cropped items
Click Remove
Click File > Save As and hey presto, the new file with all that stuff supposedly removed is 2,588 Kb
Surely I'm not the only one who's bothered about .pdf file size ?

Photo file sizes

I just started making an iWeb site recently, but I've stopped way before it's finished. I really love the software, but I'm worried about the file sizes (photos). The welcome page is really slow to load, and the photo on there is apparently a png. I've checked the boards here, but I don't know how I can speed this up. Without Photoshop, can I resize it? Doesn't iWeb resize for us?

Also, if you look in the Photos section, under Discovery Museum, the second pic on the page of my little boy leaning on the huge tree trunk (for eg.) was 2.0MB in iPhoto, and is 192KB on the site. Over my parents' prehistoric dial-up, it's painful. These photos are jpeg (not png). Does 192K seem big, or is this pretty standard as a scale-down from 2.0MB?
The site is also very slow over broadband, I'm told. What do you think? Is this slow? I'd appreciate any opinions or ideas...

I used "Modern" as a template.
Photosize looks good if I don't use Reflection or other special on the normal pages in iWeb 1.0.1.
But if I look at my Blog entries, it's terrible.
Every Blog entrie has two times the same photo, one image.jpg (with about 80 to 100kb) and one image_1jpg with the original filesize from iphoto.
Why do I have these two files and why does iWeb upload the original file with a "_1" in the name?
I don't want the large file to be uploaded!

Wrong file size in Encore?

can anyone help?
I encode a file into mpeg2-DVD fith file size approx. 4GB. When I import this file into Encore CS4, the program shows that this file will NOT fit into DVD-5. It shows about 8GB file size. Why?
If I import the same file to Encore CS3, everything is OK. In both programs I have the same settings.
Any idea? THANKS!

1-check to be sure you have not added anything to the ROM content section
2-does Encore say the file needs to be re-transcoded?
3-have you maybe added the file to the project twice?
4-related to #3, copy-paste a picture of your flowchart

Difference in file size in photoshop and bridge

when I save an image in photoshop (file size 26mb) it shows as a 70.7 mb in bridge or window explorer. Why?

Any way 3264x4896 is canvas size. Has nothing to to with file size.
Photoshop also supports layers and layers can be canvas size or larger then canvas size as well as smaller then canvas.
Additionally layers can contain embedded object and object could contain a layer file like a placed PSD image.
The center section Document Size is the documents Print here you see the document currentle has a 240DPI resolution

The bottom section is the control section. With resample NOT checked the top can not be changed Pixel Dimensions will not be changed nor would File size. And all three values in print size are linked. You change one value and Photoshop will chage the other two for you. With resample NOT checked the other controls are not settable. Pixel Dimensions are not change so no interpolation and no aspect ratio change.
With Resample checked Constrain Proportions will link width and height to preserv the current aspect ratio and not distort the image.
When you save a document file format is very important layered flat compression all play a roll. It very hard to even guess what the file size will be.

HD down conversion/HD file sizes

I just have a few quick questions on working with HD, as this is my first time.
First, if I am shooting in HD, but my final output will be SD, where does the down-conversion happen? Can I simply capture in SD, even though the footage is HD, or do I have to capture and edit in HD, and then down convert when I export the project to Compressor?
Also, one quick question about HD file sizes- I have found that SD DV footage file sizes are roughly 4.5 minutes per GB, using the DVNTSC capture codec. I expected HD files to be much larger, but after capturing roughly 4 minutes of video, the files were less than 1 GB. The files were definitely 1920x1080, and I captured using the Sony HDV codec 1080i60. Could I possibly be doing something wrong or is that how it is? I was sure HD files would be huge.

You need to be specific about what format of HD you are talking about here. There are MANY flavors. Uncompressed 10-bit, uncompressed 8-bit...both in 1080 and 720p options, then there is DVCPRO HD, XDCAM, HDV...but going by your last post I assume you mean HDV, the lowest form of HD.
HDV has about the same file sizes as DV (yet 3 times the area...thus it is HIGHLY compressed)..about 13GB per hour. DVCPRO HD 720p24 is about 24GB per hour, 1080p around 54GB per hour. Uncompressed...lots more. But HDV is about the same as DV...file size wise.
Your final output will be what format of SD. Again...there are many. Digibeta, betaSP, DV. If your final output will be DV, then it would be advisable to capture the footage as DV. Other wise you will edit in HD and need to downconvert when you are done. Either a capture card (matrox MXO is good for HDV) or by dropping the footage into a DV timeline and rendering or via Compressor. But it would be easier to edit DV to begin with if you are outputting DV.

IPhoto file sizes and a Trash mystery

I hope someone who knows more than I do about iPhoto file sizes can help solve a mystery for me. I'm not a Mac novice; I have been using them exclusively for more than 20 years, but I haven't come across this phenomenon before.
For a few months now, I have been keeping an eye on 500GB iMac's hard drive as it has been filling. When it reached 80GB of space remaining earlier this month, I figured that soon I would have to start tidying up or moving stuff to an external hard drive to reclaim space on the computer. Then, one morning last week, I switched on the iMac and discovered that the whole 80GB had vanished overnight and the disk was full. Weird, but not a disaster.
The biggest single file on the drive was my iPhoto library, at 120GB. That seemed large for a library containing 7,512 photos (none RAW), but I decided to move it off to an external anyway. The process ran smoothly. It's now safely on an external drive and iPhoto has been working well. After a few days of reassuring myself that all was fine, I decided to trash the original library on the iMac.
Here's the mystery (at least it's a mystery to me): The library of 7,512 pictures produced more than 65,000 items to delete in the Trash. Some of these items are taking up to 20 minutes each to delete. The trash has been emptying now for more than 24 hours; I have recovered 100GB of the 120GB and there are still 15,270 items to be killed.
Does that sound odd to anyone? If not, why are nine times as many files being killed as there are pictures in the library? And why would 80GB of space have vanished overnight?

That sounds very off indeed.
For comaprison. I have a library here with 30K+ items, some raw, some video, mostly Jpegs and that's 83.1 gigs. So a library of 120gigs for 7.5 k shots is well out of line.
My guess is that something was been written into the Library by some other agent - for instance, a back up app writing a back up into the Library or something odd like that.
Go to your working Library on the External. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
In List View, sort it on Size. What's the biggest item(s)?

IMovie music rights and file size questions

1. I'm producing a movie of videos and still photos from a recent vacation strictly for personal family use, not commercial. Is there any violation at all of copyrights if I add songs or loops from a commercial artists music CD? Also, I'm assuming no rights problem with using in my home movie the Garage Band loops that came with my iLife'06.
2. I'm wondering about the file size of my movie so far. It is 26 minutes long and 6.5 GB! I'm guessing I'll end up with about 40 minutes. What is the compression procedure so I can later record the movie to a typical 4.9 GB DVD disc? BTW I'm using an external LaCie burner to get around problems with the 2X DVD burner in my 2002 G4 Quicksilver.

The "personal use" issue (in the U.S. anyway) was resolved in the users favor when the first VHS recorders started shipping.
There are also millions of files that are "royalty free" that be used in any fashion.
Don't worry about the file size of your iMovie project. iDVD only uses the "time" (up to 2 hours) and will handle the compression automatically.
