About lightroom backups

I just found out that the weight of my lightroom backups is more than 50 GBs which is killing my computer and making LR terribly slow.
anyone knows if it is normal? how can i down size?
I'm using LR 2.5 and i have around 30,000 RAW images in the catalog.
Thanks 4 ur help

I think you are confusing backups of LR catalogs (essentially the metadata that LR uses to process an image) and back ups of the actual image files themselves. Two very different things.
You LR catalog back ups that are created according to the schedule you set in preferences are just back ups of the catalog, not the image files themselves. These will be located where ever you have directed LR to put them and would usually be on a different disk to wherever your working catalog is located. They will usually be separate folders created and named with the date they were created. You only really need to keep the last two or three of these if everything is working fine..the others can be deleted.
The LR previews data does not get backed up by LR and you don't really need to back this up as LR can regenerate previews whenever you require them.
Image files themselves can be backed up on import otherwise LR itself does not perform back ups of files. Always ensuring you have at least two copies of every file, in separate locations is basic to any work flow. I have three. The one in my catalog, the files located on an external disk for use with my laptop as well as my desktop. A copy of all the files made at time of import to an internal hard disk kept for that purpose and a further copy of all the files on a web server.
As far as converting to DNG goes this can be done on import or at any time within LR. With files not in a LR catalog this can be done using the free DNG converter software.
You will find some useful stuff by clicking on help in LR itself, this is the page that deals with backups.

  • I am setting up a time machine backup to a external Hard drive.  I want to backup by Mac book Pro running OSX 10.8.5. I would like to Partition the disk and use one partition for Time machine backups and the other for my Lightroom backups. How to do this?

I want to create a two partition disk. One partition for time machine, the other for Lightroom backup. Currently Time Machine is using the entire drive and it is doing the intial encryption and is about 29% complete after two days.  I've decided that I want to turn encryption off and partition the disk. So I do I start over?

With the external drive attached, open Finder>Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility.  Select the external drive from the list in the left side panel of the DU window.  In the main window panel, click Partition in the buttons top center of that panel.
Select the number of partitions you want and adjust their sizes.
For the first partition, click to highlight the partition, then select the format, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then the partition table as GUID [both of those are the defaults].  Click Apply and it will ask to confirm and erase and format that partion...oh, give the partition a name, like Backup.
Then repeat those steps for the second partition..and remember to name it...something like Lightroom.
Close Disk Utilitty and you are ready to send TM to the one partition, and do your backup of Lightroom to the second partition.

  • What  Gets Saved in a Lightroom BACKUP??

    Win XP Pro -
Have lightroom 1.0. Its asking to backup once a week. What am I backing up???
I usually import new pictures onto my D: drive into their own folders from my camera card. At other times I import pictures on the D: drive and have lightroom import them but leave them where they are. I have 2 other drives I can use for backup if I need.
Am I just backing up the links to the pictures and the adjustments I made in Develop...OR...am I backing up the original pictures too??
Any preferred workflow on this? I know I dont want an unprotected drive failure situation with my D: drive - but what is the best thing to do?
I backup my original pictures on the D: drive onto a data DVD for archive immediately after import - so at least I have originals I can get back to. Does lightroom backup these original pictures too?
    Thanks

What elements are in the library file??
Im guessing the library file has pointers to images in the grid view and their rankings?
How about any development adjustments I make to the originals? Are they saved in this library file possibly too?
So, to do a real smart backup - it seems like I have to replicate all my original images and their directories - AND this LIBRARY file. Whats its name and location?
If I back up all my folders and pictures from my D: drive onto my backup e: drive - wont the pointers now be invalid paths - and I wont be able to get to them??

  • I see that many people have already complained about Itunes' backup encryption. I NEVER set a password for it (and the corresponding option is still unticked, as always) yet it asked me for a pwd when I upgraded my 3GS to the 5.0 OS. How to solve this?

To prevent others from reading your mail, don't give them access to your account. If others need to use your computer for some reason, set up personal accounts, or a guest account, and switch to it before allowing them access. This is the simplest, and most effective, method.
Email message files can be read as plain text in TextEdit or any word processor.
To protect your email messages from being viewed by others while in your account, you would have to lock the folder, putting it into an encrypted disk image that required a password to be opened and mounted. You would have to double-click on the image and give your password to mount it before launching Mail then unmount it as soon as you're done. My guess is that you could replace the ~/Library/Mail folder with an alias pointing to the folder on the disk image.
It may work, but it seems like a lot of unnecessary hassle.

  • Has anyone had a message come up on their iPad about icloud backup?

Has anyone had a message come up on their iPad about icloud backup? The message on mine is"This iPad hasn't been backed up  in 3 weeks.Backups happen when this iPad is plugged in, locked, and connected to Wi-Fi."The message won't go away and the iPad is frozen, you can't unlock it or turn it off.Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

Try to make a hard reboot of your device by pressing and holding down the home button + power button at the same time for ca. 10-20 sec. until the Apple logo appears.

  • Thinking about Lightroom?

A year or so ago I felt a real need for more editing power than iPhoto provided. So I checked out Aperture and Lightroom. While I wanted to be able to retain the thousands of keywords I had assigned to my photos and therefore tended to favor Aperture I'd heard so many good things about Lightroom that I ended up going with LR3.
Six months later I have come to regret this decision in many ways. While LR 3 is a very powerful nondestructive editing tool, and while I would have to say that the quality of my images has improved greatly since switching to it, many, many things about LR 3 are very annoying.
I won't bore you with a blow by blow but will simply say that compared to iPhoto LR 3 seems to be an application designed by committee in much the same way as the camel is said to be a horse designed by committee. For while it has many powerful features they in a very real and very aggravating sense to not seem cut from the same cloth so to speak. It's as if a group from South America designed the Slide Module, a group from Russia designed the Develop Module, etc. The different modules "kind of work together" but the underlying structure and organization often just doesn't seem to get along.
If you are the kind of photographer who enjoys playing with computers more than working with photographs all of this is not necessarily bad news. LR 3 is a very complicated program and it will provide you with endless hours of trying to figure out how things work, or occasionally, trying to figure out why some things just won't.
If, on the other hand, you prefer to spend your time making images, the dues to be paid to join the LR ranks are very high, very high indeed, and for awhile you will be spending far more time and energy figuring out Lightroom than you will spend improving your photography skills.

Yes, they will transfer across to the new version of Lr when you install it.

for backup and recovery, please follow the standard procedure of general database backup and recovery. you need to backup both the georaster table and all related RDT tables.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try restarting the iPad and seeing if that helps.
If your back up continually fails, you might try turning off back up on your mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup) and then deleting the backup file from iCloud by swiping the backup file on the mobile device (settings > iCloud > storage & backup > manage…) and then turning back up on again.

  • Lightroom/Backups Files

I removed all but the latest files in Lightroom/Backups. The earliest file was named 2006-09-25-1503. 09/26/05 is a date prior to my downloading and installing Lightroom. After removing the files I was unable to start Lightroom - it was apparently looking for the 09/25/2006 file that had been removed.
Can any of the files that I removed be safely removed?
I got LR going again by restoring my computer to a time just before I removed the files so my question is so I know what to do in the future.
    Thanks - Bob S

You can delete the LR backups without any effect on LR (I do it all the time). You must have done something else.

  • What about lightroom 5.0 standalone?

I have lightroom 4.4. When I check for updates l get I'm up-to-date. What about lightroom 5.0 standalone?

Yes, there is an upgrade pricing, this is exactly what DdeGannes says.
Depending on your OS, you need one of these links:
Windows:  Adobe - Lightroom : For Windows : Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.6
Mac : Adobe - Lightroom : For Mac : Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5.6
This will start you off with a fully functional trial version (you'll need to upgrade your existing catalogue but this creates a new LR5 compatible one so you can always go back to 4 if you wish (but changes made in 5.x will not be visible).  You can upgrade from the trial at any time (as I recall), but you will need your exisitng LR 4 serial number.

  • Lightroom backups folder.  Huge size.

In "My Pictures" is a folder called Lightroom, where all the catalogues and backups are stored.  A while ago, I had a major crash on the computer and lost everything on my hard disc.  I was able to restore most from my external hard drive.
Now, in the Lightroom folder I have the following folders:
Backups - this is 11.7 gb and contains multiple back ups.  Can I safely delete some of the older ones?
Lightroom 2 catalogue - size greater than 97 gb.  This has masses of backups inside it going back to 2008.  Also inside this folder is a Lightroom previews lrdata file of 7.7gb and a  Lightroom 2 catalogue of 1.44 gb
Lightroom 2 catalogue previews.lrdata with a number of folders 0-9 and A-F in it.  8.7 gb
Lightroom 3 catalogue previews. lrdata. Same as above but for LR3.  513 mb
Lightroom catalogue previews.lrdata This probably relates to LR1 and appears to be empty.
Lightroom previews.lrdata  Again seems to relate to LR1 and is empty.
    Lightroom settings   That's OK
Lightroom 3 backups  That's OK too.
All the above are shown as folders.  the next lot show as single sheets of paper, if that makes sense to you.
    Lightroom 2 catalogue 1.49 gb
    Lightroom 3 catalogue 41mb
    Lightroom 3 catalogue 2  261mb
    Lightroom 3 catalogue 2.lrcat-journal
When using LR3, I have not integrated the LR2 catalogue.   LR3 has only a small number of photos in it. This was advised somewhere.  I read a post in this forum a few days ago suggesting that the LR files should not be so large as these are.  I have a total of about 12,500 photos in the catalogue.
Which files can I delete?  All the LR1 files?  Old backups, keeping just the latest of each LR2 and LR3?
Why do I seem to be getting multiple backups in different folders?
I am not a computer wizard.  My understanding is limited and I don't want to delete data that should not be deleted but this does seem to be using a huge amount of disc space.
    JW

Many thanks.  I back up weekly or more often to an external drive, including all the LR files so I feel reasonably happy about them being on the same disc.  I can get rid of masses of old backups, then.  That should release some disc space.
