About Live Captions on an image box in CS 5.5

I am trying to automate part of my workflow.
I need to pull in the image name and dimensions when I place an image into my template. The image is usually a pdf, but may be an eps.
Getting the name to register is no problem, but when I load an image I get an error in the dimension field that says "no data from link".
The only time I can get data in this field is when I place a raster image, and even then all I get are the pixel dimensions.
What I need are the page dimensions from a pdf, anyone out there know a way to do this? When I read the metadata on the pdf it says "page size" not dimensions but I can't see how to alter that or the field in InDesign.
Any help would be appreciated.

Select image in timeline, then go up to the Effect Controls and highlight the word Motion.
Now a bounding box will appear in the Program Monitor.

Double clicking on the box will open the image in a separate window. It's very slow and tedious for multiple images. How can I go back to attached and displayed images? If I click on "Forward", the images appear instantly in the email to be forwarded.

My problem seemed to fix itself. Or, by shutting down the computer one night, instead of putting it to sleep, may have reset something. Since updating to Mavericks, I always (or usually) let the computer sleep overnight or anytime I'm walking away from it. A few days ago, I was updating notes for my kids about how to find all my stuff and how to turn on my computer, so I wanted to rewrite the start-up procedures for the iMac, just in case they ever need to. Well, I shut it down one night so the following morning, I could write down each step. Lo and behold, the images, etc. are all there again! Solved, but I'm not sure why.

CS5 Live Caption Issue with Anchored Images

For some reason, InDesign will not let me add a live or static caption if it is anchored in the body. I can put it on the pasteboard and add it but not while it is anchored. Does anyone know of a work-around?

I have the same problem as you do. I'm working on user manuals, with hundreds of screen captures I want to flow with text. The Live caption feature is wonderful, only it does not work with anchored images! If anyone out there finds a way to deal with this issue, or knows of a patch or update to download...

InDesign XMP Not Working with Live Caption

I have images in InDesign CS5 (Mac OS X 10.6..), and although they have XMP data (Set from Bridge), when I set with Live Caption, my caption always says "<No data from link>". I've set up captions in Objects > Captions... > Caption Setup - metadata to "Description" and the XMP data doesn't get put into the caption. I can see the XMP information in Links > Image > XMP File Info... "Description". That's Fine. I've tried other user-defined fields, "Title, Keywords" and none work in Live Caption. I've also been updating the images after setting the XMP data in Bridge. I've also just deleted the images and re-placed them. Still can't get live caption to work.
I also saw a related thread where a user set file XMP via photoshop (CS5), which I also tried. When I do that, InDesign CS5 doesn't see the XMP data (via Links > XMP File Info). I can see it if set via Bridge, but can't make Live Caption work. If I set XMP via Photoshop, I can't see XMP data, and naturally can't set Live Caption.
I could have done my project 5 times manually by now - but the fact this isn't working has been driving me crazy. Wondered if anyone has seen this or, hopefully, got it to work. And am I doing something wrong?

I think this is a bug - probably in Photoshop (though the various engineering teams may disagree on this ).
Here's what I did:
Opened a TIFF image in Photoshop CS5, and confirmed that it had "Description" metadata.
Placed it in InDesign CS5 and created a live caption which DID work.
Saved the image as a PNG using "Save for Web and Devices" in Photoshop CS5 with metadata set to "All".
Placed that PNG in InDesign CS5, and found that a live caption did NOT work
Examined the PNG image in Bridge CS5, and found that the description WAS shown
Opened the PNG image in Photoshop CS5, and found that the description field was empty (in fact all fields were).
Looked at the "Raw Data" section in the File Info dialog box in Photoshop, and found that it was essentially empty.
Opened the PNG in a hex editor, and found that the missing metadata WERE there, but somehow must be formatted/structured in a slightly incorrect way which somehow prevents Photoshop and InDesign from properly parsing the XML, but not so far afield as to prevent Bridge from doing so.
I would suggest filing a bug report against Photoshop CS5 since it cannot read the metadata that one of its own components wrote into the file.

The Limitations of Live Captions?

Just wondered if anyone could offer any general advice about the possible benefits of using Live Captions for a project which I’m currently working on.
I’m in the throes of setting up an 800page InDesign document (split into smaller files and chapters) which should eventually include about 300 graphics produced in Illustrator (CS5.5 versions – the company will not currently fund an upgrade to CS6). Traditionally, we have always included the graphics captions as part of the Illustrator image as we found they had a habit of being forgotten about by the authors if they were to be added at a later stage in InDesign. If we’ve also needed to include sequential figure numbering we’ve typed them in manually in Illustrator – a bit plebeian but on smaller documents it has worked well enough.
Given the size of this document, I’ve been looking at the features of Live Captioning but have run into the following queries – can anyone help, please? For the purposes of these questions, let’s assume I am working on Chapter 2 and need to caption up 3 graphics: Fig 2.1, Fig 2.2 and Fig 2.3:
The text for a Live Caption needs to be included as metadata in the Illustrator file. Is there any way to print this out with the Illustrator image (directly beneath it would be ideal) to ensure it does not get forgotten about by the author? I’ve Googled and Googled and it doesn’t appear to be possible – have I missed something? If not, I would definitely recommend this as a product feature for CS7!
Is it possible to mix up the text styles in a Live Caption? We use three part captions, the first being the figure number (in bold), the second being the benefit (also in bold) and the third being a description (in italics).A typical caption would run something like this –
“Fig 2.1: Environmentally-friendly energy. Our use of horses to pull the trams rather than engines reduces carbon emissions and will protect the local parkland.”
I can separate out a style for the figure number via the Numbering Paragraph Style but if I go the Live Caption route and write the rest of the caption via Illustrator’s metadata I can’t seem to distinguish between the benefit text and the description text unless I turn it into a Static Caption. Is this possible within Live Caption?
Live Captions appear to only be able to run to one line in length without resizing / retracking?
Finally, getting the captions to automatically renumber if the locations of the graphics are moved around seems tricky. Let’s say I've got my three images in place – Figs 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. The order comes through to move 2.2 to the front of the document – in effect turning it into Fig 2.1.As it’s in its own frame, the numbering in the Live Caption does not flip to 2.1 automatically as it would if I were using a series of linked text frames. The only solution seems to be to delete and then re-generate the first Live Caption frame after the image has been moved which then auto-renumbers the ones that follow.
I can see the benefit of Live Captioning for ensuring a particular piece of text always accompanies a particular image. For anything more complex it appears to be a bit of a pullava. I’m tempted to just stick with doing everything manually in Illustrator or are there ways to automate everything easily using Live Captions and cross-references which I’ve missed?

Here how I would have approach this.. See if it can help you.
1. Metadata description is added to illustrator graphic using Bridge.
2. Graphic placed in InDesign.
3. Create a Paragraph Style with a named Numberining List with a character style for Fig., add a Nested Styles option for the second bold part ending at a sentence. The main text is Italic.
4. Make a Live Caption setup. Using Description, the paragraph style and put the results on his own layers. Not grouped.
5. If using CS6 make an Object Style with only the Text Frame Option for Auto-Sizing Height only. From the bottom.
6. Place all you graphics in InDesign.
Then when ready...
7. Select all the Graphics in the Link Panel, and choose Generate Live Captions.
8. Then use this Script: "TomaxxiVARIprocessor" - > http://tomaxxi.com/downloads/
9. When executed, the script allow you to convert the specified variables to text, and apply a object style at the same time.
This should allow the nested style to kick in, allow reflow, and also apply the auto-fit text option.
Sure you will loose the Dynamic updating of the "Live" Captions, but if you ever need to redo them, just trash the Caption Layersm and redo steps 7 to 9.

I am not sure on how it works on live streaming but on VOD the closed captioned are embeded into mp4 with software such as captionmaker for adobe media server to stream it later on.
I believe i read that the closed caption are imputed via adobe media live encoder, but i am not sure about it....

After searching a lot in finding the best cross-platform organizer & viewer around, I finally (ALMOST) found it.
It is called XnView MP and it has an ultra-fast thumbnail manager, viewer - it supports a very big number of file formats for thumbnailing/viewing - including InDesign(!) - a top-notch cataloging, the best & fastest batch convert which I could find and... <insert your advertising of choice here>.

However there is a problem:
When we add/edit the metadata for an image (specifically the caption) in its IPTC/XMP editor (Ctrl+I), the text isn't shown with the Live Captions feature of InDesign CS6.
We discuss with the developing team of XnView MP and they are very responsive and want to fix the problem but we don't know (yet) from where InDesign reads its metadata.
Some more technical info to describe the problem:
1. The files are TIFF (LZW packed) files.
2. If we open the file in Photoshop, press Ctrl+Shift+I in order to bring its IPTC editor, the caption entered with XnView shows up correctly in the Description field.
3. If, after the step 2, we close the editor with 'Ok' do a 'Save As' in Photoshop and overwrite the file, the caption will appear correctly in InDesign.
4. If, after the stpe 3, we (re)open the image in XnView MP's IPTC editor the caption is there.
It seems that Photoshop does something behind the scenes and fill the area from where InDesign reads it.
Does someone know from what fields InDesign reads its info for Live Captions?

I don't really have an answer for you - I guess it's up to them to figure it out.

CS5 - Live Caption with Custom XMP Metadata?

(I USE CS5 on WINDOWS 7)
I currently have a custom panel (witch custom namespace) up and running, and have many of my photos correctly tagged.
For this example, I opened a new Indesign document, placed a previously tagged JPEG
Then I right-click the image from the Links panel and select "XMP File Info..."
I see the custom XMP namespace tab, along with all of the data I previously entered (so I know the image is correctly tagged)
BUT, when I go to Caption Setup, I only see legacy IPTC options from the metadata dropdown
Am I missing something here?

I'd be interested to know the same thing. I have metadata stored in a custom XMP namespace, populated through a custom File Info panel. But I don't see if it's possible to edit the 'Metadata' list in the Live Captions Setup to access these or if it's limited to the default set that I can see when I access the feature?

Image box disappears only when timeline is scrubbed

I added an image box that covers the screen on top of the
"slide" layer.
This image should only appear in the first 5 seconds and fade
away. It does
it correctly in the movie, but in timeline edit mode, the
only way it
disappears is when I'm scrubbing the timeline. As soon as I
release the
mouse, it image is back on top.
Any thoughts?

It's kind of a backwards way to display information,
especially after using
premier, final cut, flash etc... where the item is displayed
as it appears
on the timeline.
My work around was to delete the image and add it last.

Live captions

Hey everybody,
When I go into Live Caption setup dialog box, I can put text before and text after the metadata. But when I generate the Live Caption, the text comes in stacked into 3 lines. The text before is one line; the description metadata is the second line; the text after is the third line. Why doesn't it show up as one continuous line of text?
My work-around was to go define a text variable and build it with text before and after, and that worked fine. Why doesn't the Live Caption setup put the three fields into one line instead of 3 stacked lines?

I have been trying to replicate your procedure -- without success. I can't see how to add Text Variables into a caption, or what you mean be a "designed text frame." Can you explain in a bit more detail?
FWIW, I have also been playing around seeing how captions work and think I've sussed out what's going on.
I tried using non breaking spaces to keep the Text Before and Text After with the Metadata: Before[nbs]caption[nbs]Metadata[nbs]after[nbs]caption.
This hyphenated the first instance of caption in order to fit the Metadata and the Text After on the second line. So I applied a paragraph style turning off hypenation and all three elements jammed up onto one line. The issue with the captions seems to be that the metadata is treated as a single word - i.e.- spaces in the Metadata are non breaking spaces. This seems to be confirmed by removing the non breaking space in the Text After field which resulted in the Metadata being jammed into the first line as one long piece of gobbledygook.
Update (and why didn't I notice this sooner): the Metadata isn't treated as a single word, it is treated as a single character.

GREP for numbers after using Live Caption

Hello,
I am placing image material with live captions in indesign. The file name created usually goes like this:
Credit: 0617 name.jpg
I would like to remove the date (0617) as well as .jpg automatically. I can do the later with a text search function, however,
due to different dates I can't do the same there.
My Grep codes (\d+) do not seem to find any numbers in the image captions. The captions are static by then.
Any ideas what could go wrong there?

Static Captions—These would be treated as normal text and your expressions should work fine.
Live Captions—These will automatically update based on the filename of the associated linked media. As mentioned before, they are treated as a single character.

Solution
Set up the aforementioned grep style in your caption paragraph style, as well as the associated character style.
Generate Static Captions for your photos Object > Captions > Generate Static Captions
If you frequently use this layout, you may consider setting the caption options to place the captions on their own layer. This way you can easily remove all at once and regenerate static captions.

Other Fields for Live Captions in CS5

I want to use the Live Captions feature in CS5, but there is no option to insert a time field in the Live Captions Options dialog box. Am I missing something or what? I can't believe this feature was left out. The Live Captions feature is an excellent idea, but it lacks power.

Live Captioning from Line 21 to onCaptionInfo with Live Media Encoder 3.2

We are a government broadcast facility charged with broadcasting live meetings via the internet. We need to upgrade our available video to provide Flash, but everything needs to be captioned. Our live captions are done via a caption encoder that embeds on Line 21. We currently are SD only and don't caption HD live. My research indicates that for closed captioning in a flash environment, the captions need to be embeded in the onCaptionInfo metadata. It appears that the Flash Media Server supports this, but I don't see any way to tell the Adobe software encoder to do this.
I'm currently testing with Brightcove as a CDN, and they do support onCaptionInfo in their player. If the data is present, a CC button will appear in their player. So far in my tests, I haven't been able to provide this metadata for the player to interpret. I've even tried shifting lines through a frame sync on the fly anywhere from -4 to +4 to no avail.
Am I missing something? Can the Adobe encoding software even do this? Does anyone know how to get Line 21 caption data passed to onCaptionInfo? I can see that line 21 is being passed through but apparently the flash players don't know what to do with it.

InDesign CS5.5--can't generate live captions

Having used Bridge to insert metadata descriptions and copyright info in my graphics files, and having done "caption setup" in Objects Menu, I find that the Captions Submenu choices for "Generate Live Caption" and "Generate Static Caption" are greyed out. I am doing an ebook with inline pictures and have placed the jpegs at the beginning of paragraphs. I can't replicate any of the smooth successes depicted in all the "How To" videos. What am I doing wrong, please?

I also found this comment on another forum page from Peter Spier: "To group the image and the frame with the caption you'll need to "unanchor" the image first by selecting the frame and cutting. Paste temporarily on the pasteboard, position the caption frame, group, then cut and paste back into the text. You may need to adjust the "anchored object options" for the anchored group after pasting." Your comment and his will give me a direction for the dozens of images I already positioned inline. After that, much smoother sailing, understanding this part of the mechanics.

Auto-captioning or printing image path in FM doc

We often have to update a very complex software user's manual with
lots of screen captures and would like to either:
a) print (hard copy) a comprehensive list of graphic insets (so we can
mark which ones need updating). I can list all of the insets in FM9
in it's own toolbox, but there seems to be no way to print that (other
than screen capture of THAT and print, but seems awkward)
BETTER YET
b) is it possible to add the name (link) of the graphic inset to the
actual book (like a caption for each image) so we could print an
"editor's copy" that would show the name of the linked graphic next to
each graphic?

PPS: It seems like Seatechpubs used to have a Caption Manager plugin that pretty much did this, but they discontinued support.... or does anyone now more about this?

If you generate a List Of References (LOR) for imported graphics, then you will get the information that you want for option "a".
Option "b" could be accomplished with a script using FrameScript.
You also should update your version of FM9.0p196. There have been four patches released. You must install each in sequential order. Many bugs and interface inconsistencies have been fixed in those.
