  • About Mac Pro RAM and one "Nehalem" Processor 2.8 vs 3.2

    Hi,
Unfortunately I don't have so much money to spend but I find Apple products very high quality and in same time very expensive, specially for my country (Russia), according to statistic, it’s less then 1% of people that using Mac Pro in here, my country really poor :/
I never use Mac before, but I think that time is come and I would like to buy one on my birthday soon (22 November). I really tired of my crazy PC with Vista, it’s always bugs lags, and so on, it’s poor machine. I can buy new PC with i7, nice performances or buy Mac, but I think, Mac will be more quality and stable.
I'm web designer and programmer and using my PC with Adobe programs, normally Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, very rare with After Effect (1 day per month). Sometimes I’m playing games like Dragon Age or CS:Source, Starcraft2. But I got PS3, but unfortunately it’s connected to our main home TV, and I can’t play PS3 because all day this TV watching my family :/ lol
I’m not sure if there are any way to connect PS3 to TV and computer screen at the same time… but it’s another question.
Now about Mac I'm wondering of buying cheapest Mac Pro 2010:
    # One 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem”
    # 3GB (3x1GB)
    # 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
    # ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB
    # One 18x SuperDrive
But at the same time, I wondering about how long time I will be able to use this Mac, and enjoy it before it will come too old. Because I just can’t spend and buy Mac every 2-3 years.
I’m looking forward to use it for 4-5 years I think or so. I know it’s very hard question and I’m not really sure if it’s right to discuss it, but I’m saying just what I think.
And maybe because of this, it’s better to order processor with 3.2Ghz, and a bit more RAM (8GB (4x2GB))? What you think?
And what will be the different between this 2 processors and more RAM? Because it will be +800 USD or so, and it’s very expensive for me (pay addition 800 Dollars), I just want to ask you if it will costs this money. Unfortunately I can’t spend more money on Mac to buy 6-core Westmare and more RAM But I think cheapest Mac, for my tasks already very powerful and awesome, what you think?
And if you’ll advice me, not to pay addition 400 USD for +0.4Ghz, and the different is very little, then what you think about addition Ram for stock MAC?

    Thank you hatter.
I'm appreciate for your help and answer, and this amazing links! They are very helpful.
I find some interesting information. And most interesting is SSD thing. But unfortunately it's very expensive for me

DEPO - It’s our Russian company so I can’t give you link on English web page, but if you are interesting to view it, maybe with Google translate:
    http://www.depo.ru/H/MDL658/1000004953/zconfigurator.aspx
And I’m not really sure, if they offer high quality components, and I can’t check it.
I just don’t want to repeat same experience like with my previous computer – I bought top computer for very high price with top components, but everything was bugging, it’s terrible, I’m working with this computer 3 years now (it’s cored 2 duo with radeon x1900 and vista :S video card - without supporting DX10-11, 2 Hdd 500Gb RAID 0, - maximum lags – I cant’ even make a diagnostics… crazy). And I’m so sad about this computer, and I don’t want to repeat same experience. That’s why I wonder about Mac Pro or any other quolity PC, but price is too high, or if I buy just normal Mac Pro:
    • One 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon “Nehalem”
    • 3GB (3x1GB)
    • 1TB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s hard drive
    • ATI Radeon HD 5770 1GB
    • One 18x SuperDrive
    • Apple Magic Mouse
    • Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad (English) & User's Guide
For 2499 USD, I still need to add more RAM, and It will costs 2874 USD with 8 Gb, but without changing Processor and/or HDD for SSD to speed up computer like **** and enjoy it every minute. I maximum can spend 3000-3200 USD for new computer. And all I want, to enjoy it’s stability and speed. To load photoshop in less then 5 seconds, working with AE a bit, 3dmax a bit, play a bit. Maybe I want to much :/

  • In fact it's about mac:excel, how convert in a cell a number written in text format into a value?

    in fact it's about mac:excel8 or 11 in OSX10.7.4,
how convert in a cell a number written in text format into its value?
    cheers francois

    Hi francois,
If I copyone of them and do a past special/value, it does not work.
Try just Paste instead of Paste Special > Value
I know your question is about Excel, but this works in Numbers:
Copy 1 234 567 (with spaces) and Paste (not Paste Special) into a Cell in a Numbers Table. The result is 1234567 and it behaves as a number. A formula will consider it to be a number:
You asked Wayne: what do you mean by "to reference a cell" ??
The reference is from Cell A2 to Cell A1 through a formula, such as: =A1+1

  • Can Anyone Recommend Books About Mac and Tiger?

    Hello,
I'm heading back to the homeland for a short visit in a week's time. I'd like to buy a book that can explain a few things about Tiger so I don't always have to visit the Apple Store and bother the Geniuses there.
Can anyone recommend any good books about Mac and Tiger? I know of "Mac For Dummies" but I've never been a big fan of that series. Cheers and thanks.

    Hi, jasperboy.
My "Learning About Mac OS X" FAQ has a number of resources that you will find helpful including books, online training, and more.

  • What about Macs?

    Hi,
Is there any way to port my Office VSTO customization to Apple Mac platform? I'm completely ignorant about macs, and now I am asked about it, and I need help.
So, is there the equivalent MS Office 2003 for Mac which supports customizations and also whether there is .NET framework for Mac that can run VSTO assemblies?
    Thanks

No, nothing has changed - there are still no VSTO tools for the Mac.
As far as creating add-ins or extensions for MacIntosh, I recommend you ask in a Mac-specific venue. Unfortunately, I don't know of any specific address...

  • What is known about Mac flashback trojan malware?

What is known about Mac flashback trojan malware?

LOL... Don't want to see this guy shirtless, anyway... Seriously, this Flashback thing is not to be taken lightly, and the first line of defense is the user's sense of precaution. Don't click on dubious weblinks, don't download (or if you do, don't open) dubious files, etc...
Now, this said, there's an ongoing criticism as to how quickly (or rather, slowly) Apple has been patching the vulnerabilities that could lead to an infection by such a malware. Some websites insist on the fact that if Apple let the third-party vendors (Oracle comes to mind where Java is concerned) patch their own software under Apple's supervision, such risks of infection would be next to nil, but that's another debate.

  • Questions about mac mini iTunes server, streaming to macbook pro, ipads, etc.

I'm thinking about getting a mac mini to work with my NAS as a iTunes server. I have a bunch of questions about this. I will have two iPhones, a few iPads, and a laptop that will be accessing the files. I have iTunes match. This is basically to keep an always on computer for hosting the music/movies. My questions are as follows . . .
#1 Are there any good, comprehensive guides to show you how to do this?
#2 Can the movies be accessed when not at home on the shared network?
#3 Can the iPads or the macbook pro download the shared movies to be stored locally?
#4 Back to #3, how will it work on my macbook pro with listening to music (I have iTunes match)? Say i go to library and I break out my macbook pro and I don't have internet. What happens if I download music while at home onto my macbook pro to listen to it when I go to the library? Will i start a new library on my macbook pro? How will that mesh with the home server when I come back.
#5 Is there a way to mirror files or folders? So something that I have on my macbook pro will also mirror on the home server.
Thanks for your help on this. I'll post any follow up questions.

    1. I want to replace the Optical drive with a 2TB SATA. can I use this 2.5 inch?
I do not know if it is the same model number, but this one will work in your MBP:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/SEAGATE%20OWC/ST2000LM003M/
    2. I want to replace the HD with a 128GB SSD 840. When I replace these drives, will my OS still be in tact? I have never done this job before.
No. You will have to format the drives in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then install the OSX by using the original install disks.
3.) I want to replace the ram sticks to max capacity. This is 2 2GB sticks, Correct?
No.  An early 17" 2008 MBP will accept 6GB RAM with the following specifications:  200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    4.) Most difficult...
I want to extend the monitor wirelessly to a projector. I thought about using Apple TV and Airplay. However, support for airplay is for MacBooks 2011 and newer. I thought of using a PS3 and the media server, but I think this brings on a format compatibility issue. (my library is so large I could not afford to convert all my movies to MP4.) So, how would you recommend I put my extended monitor with VLC player onto a projector?
Could I possibly connect the MBP to a Mac Mini as an extension? would this work natively? I would rather use a VGA cord than F with 3rd party app BS.
    Cannot help you there.
5..) I want to Bypass iTunes this time around. I would prefer to use Finder and VLC to manage all of my music. I mostly play all my music on shuffle, so, could I create a playlist on VLC with all of my music and play it randomly? (im sure this is possible but i'd like to organize all my plans with confirmation.)
You are not obligated to use iTunes.
6.) Can i upgrade the keyboard to backlit? i've read that this is possible.
All MBPs have back lighted keyboards.  Your either needs a NVRAM reset or a repair.
    Ciao.

  • Scan to PDF files too large! - Why?? Solution for Windows - How about Mac? (HP-8630)

Scanning a document to a PDF file of reasonable size has been addressed many times - it is always an issue! My wife is a realtor and frequently needs to scan multiple page documents. I found an actual solution last night:
27 page letter-size B&W document - Scan to PDF on my HP-8630 AIO using HP software at 300dpi, small file size, BW: 27MB! Too big to email.
Solution (in Windows 7 at least), if you have Adobe Acrobat:
Open Adobe Acrobat, go to File Menu -  Create - PDF from Scanner - Configure Presets. Select and configure "Black and White Document":
Select TWAIN device (NOT WIA) as the scanner; black and white, 300dpi, file size one notch to left (smaller) from center, check "optimize after scan". Select paper size and one- or two-sided scanning. Uncheck "make searchable". Save the preset. (The TWAIN driver was apparently installed with the HP installer, since I did not have to look for it.)
After placing pages in the Doc Feeder,  go to File Menu, Create - PDF from Scanner - Black and White Document. Watch the magic!
File size 768k!  Quality indistinguishable from the 27MB version, sharp and clear, all 27 pages! Really!
Using the HP software, using a lower resolution or sliding the file size slider to smaller makes a muddy scan, and the file  is still huge compared to the Acrobat technique. MUCH worse quality than the Acrobat 768k version.
Interestingly, using Acrobat to open the 27MB scan and "PRINT" it to the PDF Printer reduced the size to 10MB, with no change in appearance. "Save as smaller PDF" did not reduce the size further.
What gives, HP?? What can Acrobat do  to scan from your AIO that you can't do?
I tried on my Mac as well - we use both. No go. On Mac OSX 10.10.1 with latest HP drivers, Acrobat does not see any TWAIN or other driver from within the dialog box described above. Scanning from HP software again yields about 1MB per page.
Anyone know how to make Acrobat see the scanner on Mac?

    Hi @JosephWit ,
I see by your post that you are having issues with the PDF scanning size being too big. I will do my best to assist you with this issue.
The drivers for 10.10 are installed by the Apple Updates. Did you install the 10.9 drivers or are did up run the Apple Updates to install the printer?
Uninstall the 10.9 printer software and run the Apple Updates to install the proper drivers. Then you can scan with the Apple Software.
Connect the printer to the Mac by a USB cable and run the Apple Updates to install the printer drivers.
Go to the Apple, About this Mac, click on the Overview tab and select Software Updates.
Go to the Apple, Printers and Scanners, delete the USB drivers and disconnect the USB cable.
Then add the wireless printer as a Bonjour printer if the printer is networked.
Click on the + sign, highlight the printer, below beside Use: make sure just the printer name is listed. (you might have to click on the drop down to select your printer from the list)
Here is a document for Scanning in OS X v10.10 Yosemite Without HP Software.
If you are having issues with Adobe, run the updates. Product updates.
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a nice day!

  • A question about mac and innotabs

I bought a VTECH innotab for my son and I want to put music and videos for them on it. I understand about the DRM and itunes, but my question is....
is there a program for MAC OS X LION that turns my children's DVDs (rips them) into an a AVI file or MJPEG so to watch them on the innotab? I found so many for PC but nothing for a MAC.
    Thanks

It's like an ipad for 4 year olds. it's made by VTECH. It says the specs are
    File Type AVI
    Video Encoder MJPEG
    Display Size 480x272
    Frame Rate 15 bps
    Bit Rate 2400kbps
    Audio Encoder PCM
    Audio Channel Mono
    Sampling Rate 22.05kHz
I'll look at the site you provided. Thanks again

  • Few questions about mac pro before buying

    Hello all!
I may be buying a mac pro in a month or so and have a few questions about it.
    1. ) Any one know when Apple may release the latest mac pro? Don't wanna buy some thing that'll be significantly obsolete in a few days
    2. ) Is it possible to use SATA optical drives internally? I have a SATA blu ray drive I'd like to take from my PC, if that's possible.
    3. ) Is it possible to get a graphics cards better than the 8800 GT for video games? (For use in OS X)
    4. ) Finally, is there a significant performance difference between Apple's seemingly super expensive RAM and 3rd party RAM? (Other than the heat syncs)
    Thanks for any replies.

    1. We have no idea when Apple will release any product until it's released. This is a user-to-user site so we have no more information about future products than you do.
    2. Yes, it's possible. There are two additional SATA ports on the motherboard.
    3. The only graphic cards are those provided by Apple when you order the computer as well as the non-Apple supplied ATI HD-3870 Mac/PC card. The 8800 and 3870 have close performance specs. You can find some benchmarks at Bare Feats.
    4. There's no difference between the RAM Apple installs and what you can purchase on the open market. As long as the RAM meets the required specifications and has the requisite heat sink it will work just fine.

  • Everyone's complaining about .Mac email or MacMail! But who has a solution?

Just like everyone on this discussion board, I am having a maddening increase in recent weeks of the following 1) duplicate messages appearing in my inbox after I've already deleted or moved them, sometimes more than twice depending if I keep trying to move/delete the same emails, they keep reappearing 2) messages I've read suddenly appearing as Unread, 3) delayed mail downloads, sometimes for even the smallest of files w/ no attachments. I'm having no other trouble with my ISP or other net software.
Although the increase of occurrences is recent, I've been having this issue all year in varying amounts of regularity and have posted before about the problem. I've been told I might be moving the files too quickly or not letting them download fully before moving them, but if this many people are complaining and if I have to wait 10-15 minutes each time my Mail software gets my mail from the server, then I want my $99 back. As it is, I want it back anyway given the problems and the inability to contact .Mac about the issue and get an answer.
I've combed the other posts about the issue, but I've not once seen a solution to the issue.
How do we get a fix and furthermore, how do we get .Mac to acknowledge this issue responsibly?

    Hello,
It has been acknowledged, and the fix will have to be at the server level, and not in the Mail application, nor by settings on individual Macs. Reports are consistent, even for those accessing with other mail clients, and non-Macs.

  • Question about Mac Mini RAM Slots?

My dad is thinking about buying the 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo Mac Mini (MA607LL/A), and I was going to upgrade the RAM for him with a stick of 512 RAM from Crucial.
    1. I can't find out online if the factory default Mac Mini ships with 2 sticks of 256 already in each slot, or if it ships with 1 stick of 512. Can someone please confirm this for me? I'm guessing it ships with two sticks of 256, one in each slot, but I'm looking for a confirmation on this.
    2. Also, if I replace a stick of 256 with a new 512 stick, how much of a performance hit will he get if the ram isn't identical in pairs? We could just replace each stick with 512 if it's really worth it, but if the performance gain is minimal, then it may not be worth it.
    Any help is appreciated, thanks.

    hello mike,
Your best bet is to go the whole way, and put 2X 1G ram sticks in the machine. This will future-proof the machine, and also give the bset performance per buck. OsX really likes a lot of RAM.
As far as taking a performance hit by having mis-matched ram, i dont think its going to make a whole lot of difference. The performance decrease is very minimal. the same is true for macbook's FYI.
    Cheers, hope it helps

  • Can I submit screen shots about mac mini unpublished for help from Bob Harris?

I am dyslexic I am telling you that as I have on previous post the reason is to 1. make it understood that terminology without explanation makes the answer almost unusable. If there is a reference that would help I would use it if given. 2. to make it clear that my questions may not indicate my true ability to deal with the problem 3. I am here because as a joint administrator I have far to little credibility because of my disability. 4. to make those that would answer understand that I appreciate help but have no time or criticism. I need help to recognize problems

Continuing where I stopped in the previous post:
If I run into a site that says it may damage my computer as a wiki in my own name just did I need to know how I manage not to bump into it again.
Most web pages or email will not damage your Mac.
But any web page, pop-up, or email that tries to scare you into clicking on their link or entering any personal information, are called "Phishing" attacks (as in Fishing").  They send out millions of these and hope to catch a few, but those few they catch can be profitable to them.
If an email, web page, pop-up you receive that you did not expect, and if it is trying to scare you into connecting with them, then it is very likely a malware ("Scare-ware") phishing attack.
Your bank, Apple, Amazon, Google, etc... is not going to do this.
I also need to know how can I know that the files in my trash are not needed for the operation of my computer or something placed there and used to control my computer.
Does anyone else use your Mac?  Other family members?
Otherwise, files in your trash should most likely be ones you placed there.
If you like to throw things into the trash because you do not understand what they are for, then it is possible for you to throw the wrong thing away.
But if you are only throwing away files and documents you know longer need, then it should not be any problem.
If you select the file in the Trash, there may be a Finder -> File -> Put Back menu item (this may depend on which version of Mac OS X you are using - I was looking at Mac OS X 10.9.2 Mavericks).
But as a general rule, if you are the only user, and you only trash things you know what they are, and you do not just decide to throw away files you find in the dark corners of Mac OS X because you do not know what they are, then emptying the trash should not be an issue.
If you are really worried, then get a new external disk as big or bigger than your boot disk, and use SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable clone.  Now empty the trash and see if your Mac still works.  If it does not, then boot from the clone and restored your boot disk.
This comes under the heading of experiments and having backups to protect you from failed experiments.
Since wi fi I am more worried than ever if I could take my computer in I would.
Assuming your WiFi is configured with WPA or WPA2 encryption, and your WiFi base station uses a non-trivial password, then it is unlikely anyone has gotten into your home network.
On top of that you Mac is still difficult to get into even if someone can get on your home network.  Macs are very secure.
The risk with a weak WiFi setup is that someone will use your WiFi for free, while you pay the cable bill.  If they are bandwidth hogs, they might slow down your network.
The biggest risk of a weak WiFi network is that they download illegal content and then the authorities decide to sue you as the owner of the network.
If are using WPA or WPA2 WiFi encryption and have a non-trival password, this is not an issue.  And even if your WiFi was weak, the risk to your Mac is very low.
I also do not know how much information could be gotten off our old computer even though it was I am told completely crashed.
Is the old computer just sitting in the corner?  Or did you sell it, recycle it, trade it in?
Just because a system will not boot, does not mean the disk drive cannot not be removed and accessed from another computer.
If I can access the disk in this way, I will use Disk Utility to erase the disk before allowing the disk to leave my control.
If I no longer have the ability to access the disk, I will take a power drill and drill holes in the disk making sure I have shattered the disk platters so that the likely hood that some else could read the data on the disk would be very VERY EXPENSIVE.  I do not have anything worth that kind of expense, so effectively I've destroyed the disk and its data at that point. Then I will give the disk (and computer system) to a recycler.
I know there are bugs and problems I do not wish to blame myself for but apple is not anymore forthcomming about shortcommings than microsoft, adobe,.
There is such a thing as "Too Much Information", such that a profitable company can destroy all sales and end up in bankruptcy.  Apple and Microsoft are in the business of making money.
Also revealing all your dirty laundry can invite malware authors to exploit those flaws causing problems for their customers.
Finally computers and operating systems are very complex.  Developers often times cannot think of, nor duplicate all the different ways millions of users will use the product.
It is very possible that the developers do not even know what problems you are having.  Many people complain that xyz does not work, and assume that the developers must know about this.  The reality is that developers do not spend all day monitoring the forums and blogs looking for problems.  They spend it working on the software, then going home to have lives with their families.
People that actually report to problems to the developers via problem reporting channels established by the company (depends on the company), have a better chance of having the problems they find addressed, than people that assume if they are having a problem, that the developers already know about it.
Apple has 4 channels, the first being the best:
      BugReporter
    <http://bugreporter.apple.com>
Free ADC (Apple Developer Connection) account needed for BugReporter.
Anyone can get a free account at:
    <http://developer.apple.com/programs/register/>
    Or
    Mac OS X Feedback <http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html>
    Or
Calling customer support (if not under warrenty, it will cost)
    Or
    Apple Genius bar
No one can tell me what I should look for in downloads or in finder that would be clear direct evidence that my computer is safe or in jeopardy.
At the moment, the only thing you have mentioned is the difficulty with your Desktop and iPhoto access.  On the surface these feel like ownership/permission issues.
Am I supposed to place all these questions in different communities? When push comes to shove telling people they asked there question in the wrong place makes no sense I am an apple user I need apple answers.
You will not get "Apple" answers here.  These forums are User-to-User forums.  Apple answers come from telephone support or the Apple Genius bar in various Apple stores.  And even then, they are "Just" people.  In many cases they are following a script.
As for using the correct forum.  There are thousands and thousands of posts every day in these forums.  Your fellow users are not experts in all areas, and even if they are, they generally have a day job and a family they need to pay attention to.  So if every post went into just one forum it would be overwhelming.
By having forums devoted to specific areas, those people that have a strong interest in those areas can following posts related to that area and not be overwhelmed.
But when posts for say iPhoto (as an example) show up in a forum not related to iPhoto, then the people that are interested in iPhoto and have knowledge will most likely not see the question.  The post is then left with poor answers from people trying to help, but do not have a lot of iPhoto knowledge.  In cases like being told it would be better if the question was asked in the iPhoto forum, it is being helpful, as the post is being directed to a place where there are perhaps knowledgeable people to help.  Again, iPhoto was an example topic.
If you want to address specific issues, it would be best to post the issue to a forum community that would have people knowledgable about that area.
It is best to have one problem per post, unless there might be related behavior from similar problems (Desktop access and iPhoto access sound related, so mentioning both might be useful diagnostic information).  But having a huge laundry list of issues, many not related, can also overwhelm a contributer such that the thread devolved into discussing one item, and that might not even be the most important thing to you.
And with respect to Desktop access, the Mac OS X community for the version of your Mac OS X operating system would be the best place to start.  If resolving that does not fix iPhoto, then taking the iPhoto questions to an iPhoto related community would be best.  But I think focusing on why you cannot access your Desktop would be the first thing to do, and making sure that the ownership and permissions of the files in your home directory tree are all as they should be.

  • Question about Mac mini

I have a powerbook, but I want to get a Mac Mini for the windows use instead of upgrading and buying a new desktop (by Windows ie Dell). The question is can I have a mac mini and use my powerbook screen for the monitor?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Not directly. The PowerBook cannot act as a monitor for the other computer.
And, the devices to connect the other computer to the PowerBook's USB or FireWire port (to pipe video in that way) would introduce such a lag that you would find games unplayable (and even controlling your mouse would be very difficult).
You could try a remote control program such as:
    http://www.netopia.com/software/products/tb2/mac/index.html
You would then sit at the PowerBook, and remotely control the Mac Mini through a home network. Everything would appear on your screen as if you were sitting in-front of the Mac Mini.
Now, the program mentioned would only work for Mac OS to Mac OS remote control. But, there are Mac to Windows remote control options out there as well. But, they are a little trickier to set-up. But, one solution uses VNC networking and programs (of which there is a version for just about every platform / operating system).
But, the trick there is that you need to be able to see what you're doing on the Mac Mini computer long enough to setup the remote control program.
I'd suggest just finding another monitor for the other computer. They can be had for free and often only $5 if you buy them used. But, check around.
    I hope this helps.
