About MDM 5.5

Hi,
I would be very grateful to you if you answer the following questions:
1.     Can we have an illustrated difference between Qualified field, Qualifiers, Product families & Data Groups?
2.     Whether cross compatibility for different ERPs will be provided or not? (for Siebel, PeopleSoft etc)
In case of MDM 3.0, it was supposed to be developed <b>on Project Basis</b>.
3.     Can we build a legacy system on top of Central Repository? If yes, how? Is Reverse Engineering possible?
4.     Will there be separate repositories for IT scenarios, GDS & Catalog publishing?
How data is harmonized in SAP MDM 5.5? What is the difference between Syndicator, GDS & SCM?
(Don't they have overlapping functionality?)
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
<b>Satyen</b>

1. Can we have an illustrated difference between Qualified field, Qualifiers, Product families & Data Groups?
The product families enables the repository content to be efficiently published not only to paper, but also to non-paper media like web. Whereas, datagroup are used to break the entire set of objects(pdfs, images etc) in the repository into the meaningful subgroups. This can compared with taxomany, which is used to define the heirarchy of categories.
2. Whether cross compatibility for different ERPs will be provided or not? (for Siebel, PeopleSoft etc)
In case of MDM 3.0, it was supposed to be developed on Project Basis.
There is no out-of-box support for integrating Siebel or peoplesfot etc.
3. Can we build a legacy system on top of Central Repository? If yes, how? Is Reverse Engineering possible?
I am not sure of what do you mean by building legacy systems. But MDM provides a set of java and com based api's to build applications using central repository.
4. Will there be separate repositories for IT scenarios, GDS & Catalog publishing?
How data is harmonized in SAP MDM 5.5? What is the difference between Syndicator, GDS & SCM?
As far as my knowledge goes there is no separate repository for IT scenarios, GDS and catalog publishing. GDS stores the trade item data in MDM repository iteself.
MDM data is harmonized by using the syndicator/Import manager and XI(for connecting to different systems).
Syndicator is a tool to export a subset of the repository data(could be anytype of master data) to other systems in either XML format or
text file. GDS console is used for enhancing and synchronizing the data with data pools.
I am not sure of the context for SCM here.

  • Wanted to know about MDM

    Hi all,
    I am new to MDM.
    Just wanted to know
    1) For what MDM is used for?
    2) Architecture of MDM?
    3) Usage of MDM?
    4) Future of MDM?
Helpful and straighfarward ansers will be rewarded.
    Thanks in advance.

    Karthick

    Hi Karthick,
SAP NetWeaver Master Data Management  enables companies to <u>consolidate</u> and <u>harmonize</u> their master data within heterogeneous IT landscapes. It consistently delivers vastly reduced data maintenance costs, ensures cross-system data consistency, accelerates the execution of business processes, and greatly improves decision-making. In this context, SAP NetWeaver MDM is also indispensable within an Enterprise Services Architecture.
SAP NetWeaver MDM has an overall concept to address the challenges of master data, featuring master-data consolidation and master-data load and distribution.
In addition, SAP NetWeaver MDM also empowers various business scenarios, including the rich product-content management and global data synchronization.
With regards to integration and connectivity, SAP NetWeaver MDM perfectly integrates with SAP NetWeaver BI, SAP NetWeaver XI, and SAP NetWeaver Portal, while also offering a modular approach for use as a stand-alone engine. SAP NetWeaver MDM can be operated either in a fully administrative environment (rich front-end clients), and/or through SAP NetWeaver Portal (thin client).
    So
<i><b><u>Master data can be defined as data that is not connected to a particular transaction but is used for many instances within an enterprise. Such items are customer information, product descriptions and vendor lists. This section will introduce you to the MDM concept and provide expert views on cases for and against MDM.</u></b></i>
    <u><b>Future</b></u> (Just read this article)
Need evidence that master data management (MDM) is an initiative companies are seriously concerned about?
Look no further. A recent study from Framingham, Mass.-based research firm IDC predicts the market for MDM will reach $10.4 billion by 2009, a compound annual growth rate of 13.8%.
Compliance will drive much of this investment as organizations strive to create and maintain a single view of products, customers, accounts or locations, according to Henry Morris, group vice president and general manager for IDC's integration, development and application strategies research.
Regulations like Basel II and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act are forcing companies to rationalize their disparate data systems. Companies are also realizing that to get the full value out of their CRM and supply chain systems they need to bring all their siloed data together.
The MDM market is a mixture of older technologies -- such as product information management, customer data integration (CDI) and financial consolidation -- and the emergence of MDM infrastructure software, which is built to support any and all types of data. IBM's acquisition of DWL in August, was a sign of the way vendors are trying to bring together these disparate offerings, Morris said. Vendors like Kalido, Stratature Inc. and Hyperion Solutions Corp., which have products that cut across different areas of MDM, should benefit.
And while software is a major part of the growth, it is services that will drive the spending in coming years, Morris said.
"The big winners are in the services opportunity -- the Accentures, Deloitte, Knightsbridge in the CRM area," Morris said. "Accenture is a good example. They have an information management, BI [business intelligence], content management and information governance practice. Overall, there's a real understanding that data governance is a discipline that's important."
Large global companies are leading the charge, Morris said, forming MDM committees to determine responsibility over data as they consider introducing new products or processing information about customers. It's a task they have to undertake if they want any insight into their business. For example, a global firm like Unilever is acquiring companies all the time and must continually integrate new data systems.
"People used to think an ERP suite would solve the problem," Morris said. "Then they realized as they acquired other companies they had multiple suites, with different implementations in different divisions in different geographies. This whole area really is a greater realization about the need to develop an infrastructure, policies and procedures around data
So Future is good, and progressing very fast, (start learning its easy)
    WELCOME TO MDM,

  • Some question about mdm java api and portal content

    Hi Gurus,
I am new to MDM. I am going to develop some web dynpro application using mdm java api.
My question is regarding the relationship between MDM version and NW version:
    for example
1.MDM5.5 JAVA api can be deployed to CE 7.11 server?
2.MDM7.1 JAVA API can be deployed to CE 7.11 server? or can only be deployed to CE server.
the same question for the MDM portal content.
the possible dev environment  for our company would be:
    1.MDM7.1
2.CE7.2(do we need another EP7 server for the UWL?)
    Best regards,
    John

    Hi,
I am using Portal 7.0. MDM version is 7.1.
My problem is ... i am trying to connect WebDynpro (JAVA) to MDM7.1. But am unable to do so. I have a WD Frame in which i have a WD iView and the MDM iView. But i am unable to pass parameters from the WD iView to MDM Item Details iView.
    Note:
    1. I have deployed MDM JAVA API on NWDS
    2. I have specified " * " as a parameter to pass from the URL in the Item Details iView.
    Please help.
Every help that i have read talks about CE7.1 but not NW 7.0

  • Question about "MDM-many different models, Part 2"

Reading this article on SDN by Roman Rytov, I don't quite understand the concept of the informal MDM scenario which is called named "Data Hub".
What is the difference between Data Hub and Harmonization or Centralization exactly? Is the Data Hub scenario supposed to mean that source systems access master data directly from MDM (i.e. no local copy of the data in the source system, MDM holds the only copy of the master data)? Or does the scenario mean something else?
    Thanks for any clarification,
    Lars

    > Reading this article on SDN by Roman Rytov, I don't
    > quite understand the concept of the informal MDM
    > scenario which is called named "Data Hub".
    Hi Lars,
Thanks for reading the article. But before I explain the difference in the scenarios I wanted to point out that the article is not official and though I work for SAP the article reflects my own opinion and vision only.
    > What is the difference between Data Hub and
    > Harmonization or Centralization exactly? Is the Data
    > Hub scenario supposed to mean that source systems
    > access master data directly from MDM (i.e. no local
    > copy of the data in the source system, MDM holds the
    > only copy of the master data)? Or does the scenario
    > mean something else?
I see not the difference but a kind of clarification. CDM and MDH don't specify explicitly how external systems behave after MDM gets to the picture. It just says that the data can be consolidated and then distributed back. The so called Data hub insists that data flow occurs only through MDM and the systems stop talking between themselves directly. Another important aspect is data delivery. On one hand it's out of the MDM scope but on the other hand robust data delivery mechanism and comprehensive exception handling have to address the current level of MDM functionality and hence relay on MDM as well as on XI.
In the article I mentioned that the scenarios are not formal and probably require better wording. All I aimed to share in the article was concrete scenarios being implemented today by cusotmers in real projects as complementary approaches to the marketing oriented standard scenarios.
    Hope now the confusion vanished.
    Best,
    Roman

  • MDM JAVA API to enter value into field of type date

    Hi All,
I am having an input field in a typical Dynpro application where a date would be entered.I want to enter  the date in my MDM table in a field of type "Date".Do you have any idea about MDM JAVA API's I need to do this. Also how can I do this ?
    Thanks
    Vinay

    Hi,
Web Dynpro shall return you a type Date field. For Value, you shall have to pass SystemTime Object.
Just get the substring of Date.toString() and convert them to Integer ..
So a typical date would look like yyyy-mm-dd (eg: 2006-10-19) and not yyyymmdd.
    SystemTime st = new SystemTime();
    st.setYear( Integer.parseInt(Date.toString().substring(0,4));
    st.setMonth ( Integer.parseInt(Date.toString().substring(5,7));
    st.setDate ( Integer.parseInt(Date.toString().substring(8,10));
    A2iField date = new A2iField("fieldname", new Value(st));
    Hope that helps..

  • How to find the webclient in SAP MDM server

How to find the webclient in SAP MDM server
    Thanks In Advance
    GuruvaReddy

    Hi Guruva,
If you are talking about MDM APIs, then you will get them from Service place when you download the complete MDM 5.5 Suite. You need to choose the API which is appropriate to you. MDM comes with 2 different APIs - Java API and COM API as of SP1(The news is.. ABAP API is under development).
Pre-requisite for building applications using Java APIs is basic Java skills.

  • MDM Sender Channel - reading file name

    Hi all,
Is there any simple way to read the name of file sent by MDM when I am using MDM sender adapter ?
I know if it's file sender channel, then we can read file name by writing a UDF. But just wondering about MDM sender adapter.

    Hi Paul,
you can always delete this inside your mapping:
for instance trim the first 13 letters from /home/example
then if your directory is always the same you'll have a filename only

  • MDM - GDS - AS2

    Hi,
on one presentaiton about MDM - GDS
I've noticed that SAP says: GDS provides out of the box connectivity to
    GDSN (via AS2 adapter)
does it mean that GDS includes some As2 adapter ?
as XI does include this adapter in standard
or do we need to buy it ?
    Thank you very much,
    Regards,
    michal

    Hi Michael,
SAP provides out of the box connectivity to the data pool 1Sync which is part of the GDSN.
An AS2 adapter is not part of the shipment of the MDM-GDS solution, though it is required to use one. But we do have a reseller agreement with Seeburger and therefore their AS2 adapter can be acquired from us.
    Kind regards

  • MDM adapter : what is meant by the database server ?

    Hi all,
we are testing MDM adapter on PI 7.1 (no eHp). The adapter config requires an MDM server but separately a database server entry as well.
Does anybody have a working MDM adapter ? if so, what did you fill in in the "database server"
parameter of the adapter ? is it a URL ? JDBC name ? JNDI name ? IP address ? and to which database ? Í'm assuming the database of the MDM server, but that one is installed on the MDM server
(for which we configured an IP address in the "mdm server" field).
additionally, can somebody explain the reason for that separate Database config parameter ?
I have found no explanations in the documentation so far.

    Is it an application?
The Import Server is a separate MDM application that uses import maps created within the MDM Import Manager to automatically load source data files into a repository.
The MDM Import Server (MDIS) automates the task of importing source data into MDM repositories. It is designed to reduce the processing complexity, resource requirements.
To know more about MDM Import server, which is also called the MDIS, please follow the link below:
