About Mountain Lion

Hello,
My Mac OS X is 10.7.5 13" MBP late 2011. Is it wise not to upgrade to ML but wait for Maverick OS X instead?

Hi,
It will come down to personal preferences.
Mavericks may be as much as a year away if it is not ready for this Autumn's release date
It could also be a few months and Apple rarely confirm a date until the OS version is virtually ready to run.
There will be changes.
You will notice more between two OSes that jump one  such as missing out Mountain Lion.
I all but missed Lion as I upgraded my computer well into the Lion release and upgraded to Mountain Lion almost before I knew my way around Lion.  This meant that in reality I jumped from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion which saw quite a few changes.
As you have waited this long and the suggested release date is almost upon us it may pay to wait.
However that will depend on which previous version of the OS you will be able to Upgrade from.

As the others have stated, you're on Mountain Lion with 10.8, anything. But you can check your version of the software by going to the apple in the upper left corner of the screen and clicking it and selecting "About This Mac". That will open a box that shows your software version. Once there you can click on "More Info" that will tell you everything about your specific mac configuration.
    Welcome to the Mac family.

  • HT4788 How about Mountain Lion?

How about Mountain Lion?,I can't go to the library folder, how can I do?

Or you can just hold down the Option key and go to the Go menu in Finder. The Library folder will be shown there so you can select and open it.
    Regards.

  • General question about Mountain Lion

I've kept clear of Lion on both my MACS because of all the "bad press" it got, I'm still running Snow Leopard on my MACS and I've never had a day of problems with either. Also I run Logic Studios on both my MACS and didn't want to chance having issues with interface compatability, lack of drivers and such. My question is kind of simple and for better or worse comes down to opinion, what is the general feeling about Mountain Lion? Is it a big improvement over Lion? Is it more stable with less bugs? Any issues running Logic? I'm "playing with the idea" of upgrading but I want to do my research first. If Mountain Lion is not a big improvement over Lion or if people are having issues with running Logic I'm going to stick with SL.
Thanks for your opinions in advance.

Be cautious about listening too much to replies you're likely to get. These sort of questions in a place like this are like magnets to people who are having problems and want to complain about it. You're likely to hear some horror stories that don't represent the majority of cases.
ML has been excellent so far for me, faster than Lion and no serious bugs I've discovered so far. But if you upgrade, be sure to do your homework: backup, check compatibility of all your software (including things like printer drivers) and repair the hard drive with Disk Utility before installing.

  • Frustrated about Mountain Lion too... but.....

I actually have been very excited for this Mountain Lion update! I am a new Mac user, this 27 iMac that I got on 6/21 is AMAZING, and already I feel that I will never venture back to Windows. After learning this OS, and finding out how easy it was, and just made more sense than Windows... I was even more excited about the update that integrated all the iOS stuff, as I have an iPhone and iPad as well. ( got the ipads the same day.. iphone user for 2 years).
I requested the code on the 25th, and have yet to get it in my email. Yeah, I am frustrated but after really thinking about it, the bottom line is.. I will get it, I won't have to pay for it, and all will be well. I am not sure why there are so many people on these forum that are so upset, that they start condemning apple because something is not perfect.
LOL maybe I am still used to Windows where nothing was perfect, and this would have been a normal thing to expect. Oh well... I still am excited to get my code, and check out the new features. Also, I am sure I will run into lots of issues that I have not attempted yet, and will need help, and I hope to come to these forums and find the answers I need.
    Thanks.

I requested the code on the 25th, and have yet to get it in my email.

  • Any news about Mountain Lion not closing open files / folders on smb server shares?

    Hey Apple, anyone listening?
Are there any new about this issue, where Mac clients cannot move/edit/rename each others files and folders on a smb server share? We are a graphics work group in an otherwise Windows-centered enterprise. We have mac clients with OS X 10.5.8, 10.6.8, and recently 10.8.5. None of the older clients can work with files or folders created by the new machine, meaning that InDesign files will open read only, files and folders cannot be moved or renamed. This is absolutely critical in a flexible work environment, where any graphics designer must be able to jump into any other project on short notice.
As mentioned in other threads around the web, this seems to be a problem not with file permissions but with the finder not releasing/closing files and folders correctly when not actually in use. (a known issue is the fact, that i.e. Acrobat pdf must not be viewed in column views preview, if anyone else wants to overwrite that file, but this issue here goes much further). We urgently need a fix for that!
I'm really desparate about this topic, since the IT-department is already reluctant to offer mac support and to look into these problems; if there is no solution to this, we will be switched to windows workstations by the end of the year ... Apple, do you want that? We surely don't!
    A frustrated user

    Hi,
thanks for your answer. Does that mean, that there is a solution to this on the server side?  Is this ACL stuff a matter of setting up the server correctly, rather than a problem with mountain lion's networking?
If i could be sure about this, I would approach our IT department... (the are just waiting for some Mac User pestering them ) ...

  • Bought my mac august 12... and im only just finding out about mountain lion? abysmal

so i bought my macbook at the beginning of august 2012, and 13 months on when i go to purchase a version of logic for the first time i'm only finding out that actually
    a) i didn't get the newest os at the time &
    b) i was entitled to a free upgrade.
why was i not told this at the time of purchase? what kind of company puts the onus on the customer in this situation? this is an abysmal bit of customer service on apple's part and i'm so frustrated. it's only £14, but it is the principle of the thing (and having to pay an extra 10% above what i want to pay for logic).
least i deserve is a refund for mountain lion. not happy at all. but of course, apple has no complaints department. the arrogance.

    No complaints department?
Have you actually tried contacting apple customer support? I for one have found them to be most helpful in store and on the phone. Second to none in fact.
You're obviously frustrated, but perhaps try talking to apple. I'm Sure that they would honour an upgrade in my experience of having dealt with their customer services department (although I'm not guaranteeing it). They would only need to check when your machine was purchased to see that you would have been eligible, and a short phone call to explain your situation would more than likely suffice.
I have never found Apple to be an arrogant company in the slightest. The complete opposite in fact.

  • HT5022 what about mountain lion?

exact same problem only cannot install the utility on mountain lion, can anyone help?

  • Two Beefs about Mountain Lion

    1. The loss of stickiness in Saving a file. Up until I loaded Mountain Lion the OS would remember the last folder/location where I saved a file and would present that as the assumed default. No more! Mountain Lion always wants to save to the Document folder. I never save there — too cluttered with files various apps have auto saved their crud. Mountain Lion requires several clicks to get to where I want to save. Almost always it's to the same location I last saved something to.
    2. Mail defaults all new eMail documents to my iCloud address. I have several addresses loaded into Mail, and the iCloud one is definitely not my default. I have these various addresses for a reason. Up until Lion Mail remembered my most frequently used for addressing new mail. Now every time I send Mail I have to remember to change the address. Confuses my correspondents and frustrates me.
These may seem trivial. But they're not.

Morley:  This from a comment from the very bottom of that same article (but only if you're comfortable in Terminal... and always have a full back up in the wings when changing stuff this way):
    "Use below Terminal command.
Save to disk (not to iCloud) by default:
defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSDocumentSaveNewDocumentsToCloud -bool false
If you would like to bring the functionality back then use 'True' at the end of the command."
Undoubtedly, somebody will come out with a free app to do this sometime.
This way, if you use iCloud, this should fix problem number 1.
For problem number 2: perhaps use a different email app.
Hopefully, Mountain Tweaks at some point will add functionality to overcome these issues: http://tweaksapp.com

  • Question about Mountain Lion on iMac 27

I recentely installed Mountain Lion on my iMac, and after the computer restarted and everything.  When I click on an icon, it doesn't go into the program or the apple menu too.  What can I do to solve this problem?

That is checked (of course); however, I just actually tried the wireless mouse that came with the iMac and that works using a click - it does not work with my wired third party (Macally) USB mouse which is what I use (I do not care for the "un"ergonomically shaped Apple rodent). And it used to work with my Macally mouse, so something was definitely changed with the Lion release. I actually sent in a bug report for "loss of functionality" - didn't get me anywhere, LOL.

  • Question about mountain lion.

    Hello,
as an owner of a new macbook pro (bought July 25th, 2012) is it sufficient to send the application for upgrade or is it necessary to send the purchase receipt as well? Thanks

Do you only get dictation, or the ful siri functions?

Dictation is an announced feature. There's been no mention of Siri.

  • I just got the new macbook pro about 2 weeks ago, it has lion. When the new mountain lion comes this summer, can i just update it on my macbook pro since it isn't so old? And if i can update it, do i have to pay, or is it a free update?

I'm in the same position, the store said they didn't know of any new release, so i bought my macbook pro to find out about mountain lion. I really hope that i'm not going to pay for the upgrade. New to apple, also last month bought my Ipad 3, really thought that Airplay would have been on my book pro, nope, waste of time.........need that update to use it. Back i the box then, get the windows 7 ultimate pro back out until then.

  • How do I use the AirPlay Mirroing on my mac with Mountain Lion ?

How do I use the AirPlay Mirroing on my mac with Mountain Lion ?
I watched the video about Mountain Lion, but the airplay icon can't appear on my menu bar.
    WHY ?

    i have a MacBook Air (Early 2011)
and it doesn't support the airplay mirroring ,,, the only things that the failed to do is  " MENTION IT "
it wouldn't hurt anyone if they just say it's limited to Late macs ,,,, i really wanted that feature and i updated my mac so i can watch movies on my HD screen ,,,,
i hope they made and update for it ,,, otherwise i have to wait another 4 months to get a new macbook pro
