  • Dead cooling fan

    Hi there folks,
About two months ago the cooling fan of my notebook died.
My laptop is a rather old 'DV7 6008-eo', yet it still runs great and has amazing performance.
    - though it is rather degraded as the CPU has to throttle back due to the high temperatures.
The laptop has yet to crash on me during this course, of which I'm rather amazed.
It seems to operate very smoothly even when running at a constant 80-98 degrees celcius.
My question is though, how do I go about replacing the cooling fan and which spare parts do I need?
Is it an easy job, or am I just lost?
    - I do have a lot of technical experience, so that's certainly not an issue.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
the thermal solution is hardly ever a customer self-repair feature, i woudl not recommend to do it at home. Take it to a repair center and they will order the spare part and replace it. You can find some seld repair guides on HP.com support pages, but not for the fan.

Hope you will be able to use your notebook for a long time.

  • Irc...if not ??? about cooling fan g62-355dx

i have a g62-355dx and i put a quad core processor in it however the stock cooling fan only does a partial job at keeping it cool i very often get an overheat shutdown... i would like to get an upgraded cooling fan if possible...
also if there is an offician irc channel i would like to get that channel name as that is the best way to communicate...currently all i can find is ##hp freenode which is an unofficial channel with like 5 users...so not very helpful...if there is another the channel name would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance

    Well, now I'm updating BIOS.
Can you further help me like a dialogue box is asking for Current BIOS ID and version as well as New BIOS ID and version.
well, I have located the BIOS information in the system registry. Current Version is F.29 but not sure about BIOS ID, it may be BaseBoardProduct which is 1444.
Well, also I have come to know that the new version of BIOS that Im gonna install is F.27 and now how to find the new BIOS ID??
and isn't it strange that the current installed version of BIOS is F.29 and new version is F.27 ???

  • GT80 Titan Cooling Fans are on frequently than before

I just purchased the new 18 inch Titan and love it. However, I just started noticing the that the fans that use to come on infrequently and very quiet are now coming on more frequently. I have a cooling fan that sits underneath laptop there is nothing blocking or constricting the air ways. The laptop is turned off longer as I returned to a longer work day, and the temp in the home is in the low to mid 60s.
Is this something I should be worrying about? I have been frequently using the air duster on the laptop. Oh, I have only had the new monster machine for about a month.

Hi, how about updating BIOS and EC firmware to latest version?
Also maybe you have installed some resident programs in the background? Anti-virus and Windows auto update would also work in the background.
You can try to recover the OS to factory default and observe its status.
Using Shift feature to switch to Green mode might do some help when you only at office mode.

  • Satellite A215-S4757 - Battery life and cooling fan issue

    Hello everybody,
I would like to ask a few questions abou my system: first of all, the cooling fan is running in my opinion too often: almost continuously, with brakes of 2-3 seconds. Is this normal?
I have my laptop since august last year and I think it shouldn't be a problem of dust, because it is too "young" for that and I don't live in a "dusty" appartment...
Anyway, I think the "almost allways running fan" problem appeared about 2 months after I purchased the notebook. I have installed "Speedfan" and I see "HD0" temperature is increasing from about 30deg immediately after I start the laptop, to about 39deg after 1 hour.
But the curious thing is that so named "Core" temperature is oscillating from the beginning between 45deg and over 52deg! The fan starts each time the core temperature is rising over 50deg and stops when the temperature reaches 45deg. Is this behaviour normal???
Is the core temperature of 45-50deg normal? I am just using my laptop for Internet browsing, e-mails, etc., no complex 3d games!
The second thing is that the battery life is (and was from the beginning) not spectacular: it lasts max. 1,5 hours with wireless on, but normal use of laptop (not playing dvd's or something like this). Is this normal? If yes, is it because of the amd turion 64x2 processors?
Please help me with some advices / opinions.
P.S. I've bought my Toshiba as I was on trip in USA (NY).
Thank you very much in advance.
    Conrad

    > I would like to ask a few questions about my system: first of all, the cooling fan is running in my opinion too often: almost continuously, with brakes of 2-3 seconds. Is this normal?
Im an owner of a Satellite A210. Its similar to the A215. The A210 is a European model and the A215 belongs to the US notebook series.
I have noticed the same on my A210 and I think its normal behavior.
    > But the curious thing is that so named "Core" temperature is oscillating from the beginning between 45deg and over 52deg! The fan starts each time the core temperature is rising over 50deg and stops when the temperature reaches 45deg. Is this behavior normal???
The CPU temperature of 40-60deg is nothing unusual.
The temperature could arise up to 70-80degrees while playing a game. So dont worry about the temperature.
The cooling modules are controlled by BIOS. The fan table is stored in the BIOS and it contains informations about temperature limits and the cooling usage.
If a certain temperature level was reached the cooling module starts to rotate with a certain speed.
Now I would like to say something about the notebooks battery life time
Generally the battery life time depends on the notebooks usage.
While playing games or watching movies the battery would discharge much faster.
Anyway, your notebook was equipped with high-performance devices and as far as I know the Vista was preinstalled on this series. Both factors (high performance devices CPU and GPU) + Vista OS need a lot of battery power. Vista needs more notebook resources as the Win XP and therefore notebooks with Vista OS run shorter on battery as the notebooks with preinstalled Win XP.
Last but not least you have to know that there are different battery models A stronger battery with higher *mA* value would help to run the notebook longer using the battery power.
Hope I could clarify this question.
    Bye

  • Yosemite download issues related to cooling fan

I have spent over 10 hours on the phone with tech support, and 4 days attempting to resolve a download problem on my MBP.  After upgrading to Yosemite I attempted to update my primary software package for work and the download continues to stall during download.  Apple care told it was the Software's company's fault, the software company pointed me back to Apple.  Apple pointed me back to them and they pointed back to Apple - I just want what I have paid for to work as advertised.
Here is where I am at now:  I will begin the download and it will progress like normal, then the cooling fan comes on and the download with stop.  Several times the progress of the download, in percentage, actually shows to decrease - meaning it goes backwards somehow.  I cancel the download and restart the software the cooling fan stops, I restart the download and after a random amount of time the coolings fans start again and the download stalls.  I know that this sounds very unrelated but since I noticed this connection it has done it every time since and I have went through this process at least 12 times since first making the connection.
I have followed all of the steps from Apple's senior advisor in checking settings and troubleshooting.  She told me that it was the software's problem.  The software company tells me their servers are good and then shows me the mountain of reports from Yosemite users that are having similar issues.  Meanwhile I'm stuck with a $2500 dollar MBP and a $3000 software investment that I can't use for the purpose that I bought them.  When I told Apple care about the fan issue they inferred that I was crazy to think that the cooling fan could be connected - maybe I am.

It's not clear to me if this is an issue within the software package such as with a download feature within a particular software package or software distribution mechanism, or if this is something weird with OS X Yosemite that's causing a problem elsewhere that's effecting this download.
Who is the third-party vendor, and what is the package?  Is there a posting from the vendor pointing to the issue?
Has the third-party vendor plans to offer an alternative download path, which would seem reasonable for a case such as this with a "mountain of reports" involved?
Given your long discussion with the vendor and with Apple, have there been specific suggestions you've tried and found haven't worked?  Otherwise, we're just going to repeat some of those.
The cooling fan gets involved when something goes compute-bound or otherwise starts looping, either due to a design problem or due to a bug.  Adobe Flash Player tends to spool up the fans, for instance.

  • Cooling fan inconsistent

I've been getting the "Cooling Fan is not operating properly" message for almost a year now, and have been saving up for a replacement fan and heatsink. Starting in about August, the fan started dying quicker, but accompanied by a grinding noise. Today, I observed the grinding sound smoothly transitioning to what I would consider a good fan speed. It happened twice in the span of an hour and hasn't happened since. Is this a problem with the fan or the heat sink unit? And do I even have to replace the full part?

    Hi @EventideOne ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion dv6-6b47dx Notebook and issues with the fan. Here is a document on overheating which could possible cause a fan issue or will cause the Notebook to heat up fast.
Here is a link to troubleshoot fan errors.
In the link, it has to update your BIOS, but I recommend to restore the BIOS defaults. You could restore the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings which should resolve the fan error message if cleaning does not help.
If that does not help at the end of the document it shows you to do a hardware test.
Please note remove any and all USB devices before troubleshooting. Disconnect all non-essential devices
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Qosmio G40 cooling fan issue

Hello every body i'm the international student bought G40. I had it about nearlly half year.
I recentlly found there is problem with my G40,i usually carry my G40 to library or to my friend place, once i took G40 out of the bag and put on desk and power on,CPU fan appears nosiy.
It's kind like frame of cooling fan is changed on the move but it will gone in a very short time, around 2 or 3 mins.
As far as i know fan it's working perfect, just when I take it to somewhere else and put it out and it appears like this.
Anybody found this before, does anybody has idea what's going on with my G40?

Hi, for the first day ...i have writing ,because i dont know if the fan noise have been resolved for all the time!!! It's take near 1 1/2 hour to my TSC technician to do the job! I have waiting him !
I will tell u in the future if the problem come back! At stating, now, the noise is reduced near the normal level for the 2 to 3 first minutes, and to normal level after.
    Greetings!

  • I installed a cooling fan in my G3

My hard drive died so I put a new one in (80gb, 7200 rpm) and I thought it would be a good time to install a cooling fan. I put an 80mm, 30cfm fan just under the exhaust vent on top of the iMac, and powered it w/ the hard drive power cable (the fan has a male and female plug so you can wire it in series w/ the hard drive).
The fan works great however I notice it doesn't shut off when the iMac goes to sleep. My question is has anybody here installed a fan in their iMac and how did you wire it?
Not a big deal as the fan only cost $7, but it won't last as long when it runs 24/7. I don't usually shut down the iMac, just let it go to sleep.
    Thanks

    Hello,
The only option I could think to propose, would be to put it on a thermal sensor. There are sensors that are designed for PC builders. Those sensors draw power from the hard drive connector (like you powered the fan), and then can control whether or not the fan is powered or not based on temperature (you would plug the fan into the sensor for power).
You would attach the heat probes / sensors to whatever you wanted to base the activation temperature on (CPU, hard drive, ambient temperature, etc.).
That would be about the only option I would see since the iMac does not have a control mechanism for the fan.
Now, if you were up to designing your own electronics, you could devise a sensor / controller mechanism that would activate or shut-down based on the state of a component (such as the hard drive). But, that is not something you'll find pre-built. I used to get into things like that, but it would take a lot of money to motivate me to produce something like that now (just don't have the time or interest anymore).
Otherwise, just let the fan spin.
I have an iMac G3 Lime 333 MHz that came with a factory fan installed. It's fan spins all the time and only turns-off if the computer is completely off. Even when it's asleep, the monitor is off, the hard drive is off, and so on, the fan runs at full speed. I just haven't cared enough to alter it.
    I hope this helps.

  • Ticking sound in sync with cooling fan

I just started hearing a ticking sound in sync with the frequency of the cooling fan speed. I'm guessing it's a bearing going bad in the cooling fan but that sounds like the diagnosis on a car engine. Anybody have any experience with this?

You could, but it would probibly get better results if you measured the output of an audio amplifer that is being driven by the microhone. The problem is that microphones tend to be pretty low-level devices so reading them directly could cause noise problems.
In terms of an amp, unless you are particularly concerned about amplitudes, any cheap thing you could pick up at radio shack would work.

  • HP Notebook 2000 cooling fan issue

Hey, everyone. I've had my HP Notebook 2000 for a few years and I've discovered my first major issue just a few days ago when the cooling fan stopped working. I don't really mind it too much because I have a USB-powered cooling fan that my laptop rests on, and it does a pretty good job. My entire laptop remains at about the same average tempurature.
The biggest issue I'm having is every few hours, the laptop will automatically shut off because of it.
As well, when I boot it up (turn it on), it gives me a reminder that the cooling fan isn't working and I will have to press "enter" or the laptop shuts off in 15 seconds.
How can I make it so the laptop ignores the broken cooling fan? I don't want to spend the money to repair it because I can rely on the USB-powered cooling device.
    Thank you!

    View Solution.

No you can't. Reason it probably shuts down is because cpu temps peak over safety threshhold at times thus it shuts down to prevent damage.
Cooling systems on hp's are not the best when working so thermal stress on cpu,gpu & mainboard will be bad & failure failure will occur quite quickly.
Fan assembly is very cheap & can be done DIY if you have some skill in dismantling these sort of things & following hp service manual & other online guides.
I expect a new fan & new thermal paste & shimming along with cleaning would do wonders for running temps & long term health of the notebook.

  • Start up screen black saying cooling fan error

I recently turned my computer on and right away pops up cooling fan error. Further use might damage computer. Something along the lines as that. I've done what they told me with using canned air and blowing that through the vents. And I turned it back on and it still came on with that screen. I need some help please. I know I've owned this laptop for about 3 years or so but it's worked perfectly fine since I bought it. I really need someone to guide me on what I should do!

  • Cooling fan runs too much

I've had my MacBook for about 5 months. Recently (the past month or so) I've noticed the cooling fan running a a lot. Even if it's in a cool environment, sitting on a desktop, it will sometimes run constantly. There are only a couple of applications open and no CD/DVD in the drive. This problem is random; for instance, today it started after I restarted my machine. It's been running non-stop for a half hour now. I do regular updates, including the latest firmware update last week. Any ideas?

I'm not surprised. Last time mine did it is was a printjob that was running. I didn't try to print but something I looked at or did caused it to start.
Go back into activity monitor and high light the process. Then click the stop sign looking icon to quit that process.
