"About my Mac" under "Storage" causing freezes

Hello all,
I usually figure these things out myself (relatively minor issues with my mac, OS X, etc.) but today I'm unable to resolve my issue.
After installing an Intel 530 series 180gb MLC SSD, cloning my drive over, I've been having annoying long freezes with the rainbow pinwheel whenever I click on the "storage" tab in the "About my Mac" window. I've gone through extensive diagnosis (resetting PRAM, SMC, even reinstalling with a fresh copy of Mavericks... nothing did the trick.) I looked under the Console error messages, it came up with something about SATA recognition failure. I'm unable to post the specific error message as it isn't appearing right now; after extended sleep or doing a reboot once in a while, it comes back and decides to freeze up the system for roughly 5 seconds or so.
I've looked into the issue and disabling SSD sleep did nothing, a reinstall did nothing either. I highly doubt it's an SSD issue, as the rest of the system works insanely fast and flawlessly. I had TRIM manually enabled through Groth's Trim Enabler (go google it), and disabled in hope that this would solve the issue. Being enabled or disabled, it made no difference. I was still getting the annoying hang on the "About my Mac" window.
Anyone know what's going on? My SSD is perfectly compatible with this computer, it seems that OS X has a bug where it can't seem to find the drive's specifications and the amount of data shown (colored bars with corresponding amounts of different types of data).

could it be an issue with your MacBook Pro’s internal SATA cable?
If you still have your original hard drive, try reïnstalling it internally and connect your SSD externally, but boot from the external SSD and go about your normal routine. If the problem isn’t reproducible in that way, then your internal SATA cable might be the culprit, since hard drives seem to be more tolerant of SATA cable faults than SSDs are.

ITunes states 95GB used but in about this mac storage says 124 for audio. Thats a big difference.

I am running out on space on my MacBook Pro. When I check my iTunes library it states 90.18 GB used but when I go into "About this Mac" under storage I see the audio space used is 124 GB. That's quite a difference - 34 GB. Does anyone know why the difference is so high?

Wrong photos/videos reading in About This Mac - Storage Tab

I have updated to Photos from iPhotos but now when i hit about this mac and storage reading ... i get it all messed up it shows 1GB of photos where i have at least 20GB .. is there any way to fix this ? before i used to re-index the database but i don't know how to do this in the new app

IF you set up Photos to keep only an "optimized" library on your local drive, the size will be substantially smaller than if you chose to keep "original."
How large is the library when you navigate to your User > Pictures folder and check the size there?

About this Mac - Storage

Hello.
When I go to "About this Mac", then "Storage", I see that there is 77.55G in the "Other" (the yellow one) folder.
I mostly have pics, music, apps and movies on my computer.
Any ideas what that 77.55G is and how to clean it up?

"Other" includes everything that is not audio, movies, photos, apps, or backups. It includes downloads, work products such as documents, spreadsheets, presentations, Mail messages and their attachments, and OS X itself. 77+ GB is not at all unusual.

Storage values under about this mac displaying incorrectly, but amount of space used IS correct. Any ideas?

I noticed recently that the "storage" under "about this mac" is displaying incorrectly. It doesn't show the correct values for my photos, videos, and audio files. It classifies this data under "other". I have been searching all over the internet, I went to the Apple genius bar yesterday and they recommended I re-install OSX. I did and it still shows up incorrectly. They were baffled, said they never really came across this issue. I have tried re-indexing spotlight, that didn't seem to help.
The amount of storage used IS correct. It just doesn't show up under the correct categories in storage, under about this mac. Also, the computer seems to work fine. No real issues. It's a mid 2012 MBP. 500gb hard drive. Most recent OSX is installed.
I DO NOT think it is local snapshots, cause my backups category is small and the amount of space used and free is correct. I have downloaded omnidisk sweeper to confirm this.
I have seen a few posts on here and around the web referring to this, but no real answers. I have also reviewed Pondini's info on this to no avail.
Does anyone have any ideas?!?!

I had installed a version of parallels with windows 7, but deleted it. Would parallels be causing my computer to index incorrectly? I I used appcleaner to delete all the parallels files so I do not have it anymore.

This is cause by the way the App Store checks to see if an application is installed on your system.
Basically when an app is installed it is in the Applications folder and this is where the MAS looks for them. So it looks at your purchase history for the apps you bought and looks in the Applications folder to see if they are installed. If an app is in your purchase history but not in the Applications folder the MAS says you need to install it.
For normal apps this works fine but the OS doesn;t install into the Applications folder. So the MAS sees you have Mountain Lion in your purchase history but it's not in the Applications folder and so it says you need to download it.
Hopefully one of these days Apple wil fix this.

'Tis a common problem on old Macs.
Do as Allan says: open the door and blow out all the dust bunnies. Canned air from Wal-Mart or Radio Shack can be handy (though sort of expensive) especially for blowing through the back of the power supply. A cool Mac is a happy Mac.
Be sure your Mac can breathe. The air intake is on the bottom of the case, so be sure a deep pile rug or too many papers on your desk are not blocking the air supply.
Feel the power supply and the processor with your hand. They should be warm but not hot; if you have to move your hand away, that's too hot!
Check the fan on the power supply, and on the processor if it has one. Take a flashlight and peer in the back of the (Mac) case through the grille; make sure the fan is turning. If it's not, the power supply won't work for long.
Fans are not considered serviceable, though they will succumb to mechanics of determination. A CPU fan is easy and straightforward.
A fan replacement will not cure an already damaged power supply; the PS may already be done for. Used power supplies for a DA are hard to come by, and not especially cheap when found (c.$50). An entire working DA or Quicksilver may often be found for under $100 on eBay, and swapping in your HD is easy and simple... this might be cheaper and more expeditious than repairing an expired DA. Replacing a power supply is fairly easy, but it's a nuisance and requires a 2mm Allen head wrench in addition to the usual #2 Phillips head screwdriver.
In my experience, power supplies and CPUs are about equally likely to fail. There are a few other possibilities, but they are not nearly so common.

About This Mac/Storage/Other - what's the starting point?

I have a very new MacBook Air. After a fairly abortive migration (it carried over lots of stuff from my iMac which I didn't want - I only wanted settings, not files) I scoured the discussions and picked up a thread that suggested setting up a new administrator profile and deleting the old one, thereby getting rid of all the files and so on. (now why didn't I think of that?).
However, I've made the mistake of checking the "About This Mac"/storage info, and it shows as follows:
Audio 656.8MB
Movies 42.3MB
Photos 112.7MB
Apps 3.73GB
Backups zero
Other 9.45 GB
Now it's bugging me enough that I can't track down the audio, movies and photos (although I concede that these are very small and may be system related?).
BUT the "Other" section is really annoying me. What is it?
I'm aware that I might reinstall OS and start again only to discover that I STILL have 9.45GB in Other.
Can anyone who knows about these things help?
Does anyone have a brand new MacBook Air on which they haven't yet done anything at all and can check what it says under their "Other"?

Hi Margo:
Ultimately, you may want to perform a complete do over--which given your circumstances might require you to perform a clean install. More on that later if you want to do so eventually.
I am assuming you transferred your data, etc., from your iMac using either Firewire Target Disk Mode for over a network. It doesn't matter much, but which did you do.
Regardless, for now, I would do a repair install of Lion and see how things look after doing so. A repair install should leave installed apps, files, and settings alone. And, such an install very well sort out any issues of how much of what you have where. There are several ways of doing so. first, if your Lion Recovery HD partition is present or you have set up a Lion Recovery Disk Assistant, then either will work. Let's see if you can do either of these before going any other route.
Try starting up holding down the option key. Once done, see if there is a "recovery" option. If yes, then I would choose it and ultimately choose to reinstall Lion from the Apple site. If you have unbacked up files, etc., then be sure and back them up to your iMac before doing any kind of install.

Hello, the story so far
Actions:
- MBA early 2014 (128GB) maverick updated to yosemite in November 2014
- fresh install of Yosemite via wifi in January 2015 - followed instructions as suggested here http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14243
Consequences after fresh installation:
- About This Mac > Storage shows total hard disk size 120GB, About This Mac > Storage shows 110GB
- About This Mac > Storage shows approx 9GB of apps. The actual applications folder size is far, far, far less than 9GB as showed in Terminal.
- About This Mac > Storage shows approx 1GB of data for videos, audio and photos. There are no photos, video, documents stored on MBA.
For the records, no device data was sync after fresh installation and the trash is being emptied securely.
I am new to MAC so I would be grateful if you could help me understanding why About This Mac > Storage is showing more data stored than Terminal and Finder and what I should do to rectify the discrepancy.

Kappy, may thanks. No difference, Get Info for the folders returns same data size as About This Mac > Storage
On a different note I have noticed that there are two Library folders under harddrive. See screenshot attached.
System/Library (6.8GB) folder contains subfolders that are also contained under Library (2.7GB) folder.
Could that be the problem?? Is that normal to have two Library folders??

I recently used SuperDuper! to transfer my hard drive, setting etc to an SSD to replace in my MBP. When I placed the SSD in and went to "About This Mac" I came upon this in the Storage section. My question is where can I find my Backups and delete them?

What kind of use do you make of your MBP? A lot of photo or video? If so, you may be storing a lot of large files. Look at Finder and see what the file system looks like. Do you have large libraries of data files associated with applications?
You may want to think about an external hard drive to use for backups and data storage, you can point applications to the external drive as the default storage location.
A good source of external drives at a reasonable price is the Mac specialist, OWC, http://www.macsales.com
I bought their Mercury Elite Pro 2 TB dirve last September and set it up to use part for Time Machine backup and part for other work space. Setup with Disk utility into two partitions is very quick and easy. Just remember to format as Extended Journaled with GUID partition table. Setting the partition sizes is by using a braphical image on screen in DU so it is like falling off a log, so easy.
