Please verify if there is an specific oracle error message displayed, i.e. a number 125??. This will provide useful feedback on what exactly is going on with your code. It could be a misspelled address, a lack of listener or an uknown service name at listener side, which by the way are the most common failure reasons.

Document about Oracle 10g New Features
Hi all,
I would like to share a document I wrote about Oracle 10g New Feature. I hope it would be useful.
Currently, I am updating the document to include Release 2 features. Any comments or suggestion is appreciated.

There are always some tpc-c test reports to preview the performance of new product half a year before it is available. But there is none about oracle 10g release 2 as normal. Why?
yes, I saw that by googling... but I asked Oracle Support and they did not confirm it. I do not expect it before end of year.
extract from tar with metalink:
Hello Laurent Schneider
We dont have the time frame Or release date for 10.2.0
Details available only for next immediate patchset [for aix5] --> 10g R1 Patchset 2(10.1.0.4) which is April 04, 2005
as you see, there is no date for 10.2. I am still waiting for 10.1.0.4... -
Compatibility about oracle 10g release1 and unbreakable Linux
Hi there,
My OS is "Oracle Unbreakable Linux" which is from ORACLE, when I tried to install oracle 10g release 1 , it got error as below:
[oracle@O10gR1 Disk1]$ ./runInstaller
Starting Oracle Universal Installer...
Checking installer requirements...
Checking operating system version: must be redhat-2.1, redhat-3, SuSE-9, SuSE-8 or UnitedLinux-1.0
Failed <<<<
Can somebody tell me if unbreakable linux is compatible to oracle 10g release 1 ?
ThanksOracle 10gR1 is certified with OEL, you might have using old downloaded installer, that's why you getting error. Download new installer from otn.oracle.com.
OR
you just need to execute runInstaller with -ignoreSysPrereqs switch:
./runInstaller -ignoreSysPrereqs
OR
Update oraparam.ini in STAGE_AREA/Disk1/install

Need advice about Oracle 10G ex
Newbie question. I have set up Oracle db express on a Redhat Linux FC 8 box. It is in a workgroup with several MS computers. I have Samba runnning on the linux box and it shows up in XP network neighborhood. N\ow I need to access the ex Db instance remotely and I keep getting session timed out or 'does not exist' in Network listener config. I thought for sure setting up Samba on the linux box would allow windows boxes to access the db from their own Oracle clients but it is not happening. What am I doing wrong/
TIA DanI am trying to use Enterprise manager from a winblows workstation and when I type in the tns_names stuff it connects for a few seconds then closes.Enterprise manager ??? XE does not have Enterprise manager , maybe you mean Database Home page ?

About Oracle 10g Data export/import
I have two DBs, let's call them AProd, BAcpt.
all tables/procedures/sequences etc. are defined same, only schema names are different, and the role names are different (e.g. In AProd, role 1 named as AProd_ROLE1, but corresponding role in BAcpt is named as BAcpt_ROLE1).
In order to use Aprod data to refresh BAcpt, in OEM, I established a DB link from BAcpt to Aprod and planned to use "Import from Database" option.
Option 1: By selecting "Schema" -> "Data Only", Import content type =" Import all objects", I am able to refresh BAcpt's tables with AProd's data, however, I can't refresh Sequences, especially the last_number of the sequences.
Option 2: By selecting " Schema" -> "All", Import content type =" Import all objects", I am afraid this will overrite all the roles/privs of BAcpt, and I have to run scripts to recreate BAcpt's roles, and grant those roles to users again...
Is there any better solution for this request?
Thanks,Thank you first.
I did drop and recreate on target DB using source DB's sequences. Extending the original question a bit, if the sequence doesn't exist on target, I guess Option 1 won't bring over the new sequence/procedures from source DB either, correct?
Also for Option 1, It seems the Index also be updated........... Any document I can refer for details? I thought after import data, I need to "rebuild Index online" ... will it still be true ?
Thank you for any answers:-) -

"In-Memory Database Cache" option for Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition
Hi,
In one of our applications, we are using TimesTen 5.1.24 and Oracle 9i
databases (platform - Solaris 9i).
TimesTen holds application information which needs to be accessed quickly
and Oracle 9i is a master application database.
Now we are looking at an option of migrating from Oracle 9i to Oracle 10g
database. While exploring about Oracle 10g features, came to know about
"In-Memory Database Cache" option for Oracle Enterprise Edition. This made
me to think about using Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition with "In-Memory
Database Cache" option for our application.
Following are the advantages that I could visualize by adopting the
above-mentioned approach:
1. Data reconciliation between Oracle and TimesTen is not required (i.e.
data can be maintained only in Oracle tables and for caching "In-Memory
Database Cache" can be used)
2. Data maintenance is easy and gives one view access to data
I have following queries regarding the above-mentioned solution:
1. What is the difference between "TimesTen In-Memory Database" and
"In-Memory Database Cache" in terms of features and licensing model?
2. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option integrated with Oracle 10g
installable or a separate installable (i.e. TimesTen installable with only
cache feature)?
3. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option same as that of "TimesTen Cache
Connect to Oracle" option in TimesTen In-Memory Database?
4. After integrating "In-Memory Database Cache" option with Oracle 10g, data
access will happen only through Oracle sqlplus or OCI calls. Am I right here
in making this statement?
5. Is it possible to cache the result set of a join query in "In-Memory
Database Cache"?
In "Options and Packs" chapter in Oracle documentation
(http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/license.102/b14199/options.htm
#CIHJJBGA), I encountered the following statement:
"For the purposes of licensing Oracle In-Memory Database Cache, only the
processors on which the TimesTen In-Memory Database component of the
In-Memory Database Cache software is installed and/or running are counted
for the purpose of determining the number of licenses required."
We have servers with the following configuration. Is there a way to get the
count of processors on which the Cache software could be installed and/or
running? Please assist.
Production box with 12 core 2 duo processors (24 cores)
Pre-production box with 8 core 2 duo processors (16 cores)
Development and test box with 2 single chip processors
Development and test box with 4 single chip processors
Development and test box with 6 single chip processors
Thanks & Regards,
VijayHi Vijay,
regarding your questions:
1. What is the difference between "TimesTen In-Memory Database" and
"In-Memory Database Cache" in terms of features and licensing model?
==> Product has just been renamed and integrated better with the Oracle database - Times-Ten == In-Memory-Cache-Database
2. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option integrated with Oracle 10g
installable or a separate installable (i.e. TimesTen installable with only
cache feature)?
==> Seperate Installation
3. Is "In-Memory Database Cache" option same as that of "TimesTen Cache
Connect to Oracle" option in TimesTen In-Memory Database?
==> Please have a look here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/timesten/quickstart/cc_qs_index.html
This explains the differences.
4. After integrating "In-Memory Database Cache" option with Oracle 10g, data
access will happen only through Oracle sqlplus or OCI calls. Am I right here
in making this statement?
==> Please see above mentioned papers
5. Is it possible to cache the result set of a join query in "In-Memory
Database Cache"?
==> Again ... ;-)
Kind regards

Oracle 10g Express Edition presentation
Hi everybody,
I'm an Italian university student and I have to make a presentation about Oracle 10g Express Edition for an exam. The points of this presentation will be:
- Portability
- Compatibility with SQL92 standard
- Interfaces
- Installation and hardware resources
- Costs and license
- Security
- Performance
I'm very new in the Oracle world, can anyone help me or suggest sites where I can retrieve the information I need.
ThanksSi offende qualcuno o semplicemente capisce meno gente? Penso più la seconda, ma mi sembra più "educato" usare l'inglese, in modo che tutti capiscano.
Translation :
I think it would be more correct using English, so that everyone can understand.

Oracle 10g Paremeter to Auto Roll Back uncommited transanctions
Hi all
In SME Segment - People donot affort having Oracle Dba and at the same time less experienced persons keep making their own tests
Situation goes as under :-
a) Oracle 10g Windows 2003 64 Bit version on Branded HP Server with 8GB Ram having around 100 simultaneous users
b) User A on Machine A fires command say
Table Iledg has inventory data say around 2 Million records
Update iledg set gwt = netwt + corewt where vrdate >= ??? and vrdate <= ??
Records get updates - But user A does either of the following
i) Does not give commit
ii) Preses Ctl + Alt + Del
iii) Switches off the Computer
Problem
All other users get hanged for their Transanctions relating to table Iledg. EDP person is not able identify the culprit i.e User A
We have already tried - that if we kill the session of User A , position becomes OK
Solution wanted for
a) Set some Oracle Parameter which automatically rolls back un committed transnactions for say 5 Minutes
b) Oracle automatically kills those sessions who have un commited transanctions for more than say 5 minutes.
Because in SME Segment - It is very difficult to ask the users to fire some very technical commands to find out the culprit and to kill their sessions. At the same time we can not start the server again and again.
Suresh BansalThanks for the reply.
We were also very sure about Oracle 10g beharviour but it actually does not happen in abnormal disconnections.
We tested this way
a) Table Iledg has inventory data say around 2 Million records
Machine A fires command say
Update iledg set gwt = netwt + corewt where vrdate >= ??? and vrdate <= ??
Oracle Results -> ?? rows updated ->Did not gave commit command ->Intentionally to test it switched off the machine without Exiting from
SQL*Plus
then on Machine B)
Again tried to
Update iledg set gwt = netwt + corewt where vrdate >= ??? and vrdate <= ??
Session of Machine A is not killed by Oracle 10g and is blocking the Transanction of Machine B which is very unfortunate as we thought Oracle 10g must have killed the session of Machine A when he switched off his Machine. When blocking_session of Machine A is killed ->Position becomes absolutely OK and normal.
This can be tested in just 2 minutes at your end.
Kindly suggest some workable remedy to overcome such abnormal client disconnections. Setting Profile idle time is not the workable solution as we create Oracle Connection at the start of VB6 application and that connection goes on thru out applications for all reports and transanctions.
This kind of problem is not faced in last 6 years over the same forms. But now the client network has grown to say 700 Computers and is creating problems intermittently which is diagnosed properly and terminates the Oracle Connections which sometimes creates these kinds of problems.

Hi,
i've a question about Oracle 10G and their SGA. When I do in SQLplus show sga, I get for example:
SQL> show sga
Total System Global Area 167772160 bytes
Fixed Size 1247900 bytes
Variable Size 58721636 bytes
Database Buffers 104857600 bytes
Redo Buffers 2945024 bytes
when finding other parameter I get always '0', this was not in other releases...
SQL> show parameter pool
shared_pool_size big integer 0
java_pool_size big integer 0
large_pool_size big integer 0
olap_page_pool_size big integer 0
SQL> show parameter db_cache
NAME TYPE VALUE
db_cache_advice string ON
db_cache_size big integer 0
It seems that I have no control over setting those parameters, I remember at installation time it gave a % of the pc memory would be used, has it something to do with that? Can you chose between the automatic SGA-management and setting it by yourself?
thanks
greetsHi,
I also find some trace files under my udump-dir, has this also to do with the SGA?
