About Parallel , IDM and Windows 7.

Hi.I'm new to apple products. This is my first time using macbook as i had been a loyal user for windows. My question is about parallel 9.I own a 13' Macbook air with 128GB SSD and 4GB RAM.Is it going to work with Parallel and Windows 7 ?Should i get Window 7 or 8 ?Is it going to be so laggy since my MBA isn't that powerful.I'm confused whether to use Bootcamp or Parallel.I had already googled through so many reviews but it is confusing. My only purpose to use Windows is just to use IDM ( Internet Download Manager). Can anyone helps me ? Thanks.

Hi,
1- This is normal behaviour. WHile your MBP is capable of running SNow Leopards 64-bit kernel by default it is set to use the 32-bit kernel of SL.
Have a read here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3770 and here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4287
2- SInce you are about to use Parallels with Windows 7 I would suggest to get the 32-bit version.
With Parallels 64-bit Windows would be only neccessary if you have to use WIndows programs that need 64-bit WIndows and/or use more than 4GB of RAM.
But since the hardware ressources are shared between OSX and Parallels WIndows and you "only" have 4GB RM you should not assign more than 2GB RM to Parallels WIndows.
i386 only means that the OSX (Darwin) kernel is meant to run on Intel processors.

Stefan

  • A Few Questions About Parallels 5 and Windows 7

    Hey guys!
So, I am taking a computer programming class that requires Windows, just so we can all be on the same screen at the same time (lame, I know). Anywho, I have a Mac, so my teacher provided me with a log-in to MSDNAA, to get Windows 7 for free, and he gave me Parallels 5.0 for free as well. (go community colleges!)
    A few questions:
1- I am running Snow Leopard right now on my 2009 MacBook Pro, and my processor is the 64-bit processor, but after running the command uname -a I discovered that my Kernal is loading in the 32-bit mode. Is this normal? Shouldn't it be running in 64-bit mode?
    2- Which Windows 7 should I get, the x64 or x86 (32-bit or 64-bit)?
    Thanks for any/all help!

  • Is anyone experiencing problems with opening mission control from the desktop.  Running mountain lion with parallels 7 and windows 7

is anyone experiencing problems with opening mission control from the desktop.  Running mountain lion with parallels 7 and windows 7

I had been having a similar problem on Lion with Safari pdf files despite downloading the latest Adobe Reader XI.
I would constantly get the same messages - There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired. And I would get a blank page when I tried to print the pdf if I tried printing from the Safari web page using File - Print from the top toolbar on my laptop.
Then I came across the grey Safari lozenge with action icons.
This allowed me, without downloading the pdf, to print the pdf file direct from the Safari page by using the Print icon on the grey lozenge that appears centrally three quarters down the screen.
Then I discovered that if I save the pdf using the Save icon from this same grey lozenge on the Safari page I can open and print this pdf version from my desktop.
I've tested it with a couple of different pdf files and these methods work using the grey lozenge icons but the same pdfs files don't work using File - Save As on the Tool Bar.

  • Parallels 9 and Windows 8 System Requirements?

I recently purchased Parallels9 and Windows 8 for my Imac Intel (early 2009) and received a message saying the computer wouldn't run this softwre. Is there a  system requirement for this computer that isn't available?

    Hello,
Lion needs to be at 10.7.4 at least...
Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac System Requirements
To install and set up Parallels Desktop 9 for Mac, you need:
    A Mac computer with:
An Intel Core 2 Duo processor or better
At least 2GB of RAM (4GB recommended to run Windows 7)
At least 700 MB of space available on the boot volume (the volume that has Mac OS X) for Parallels Desktop installation
Enough free disk space for each virtual machine and its applications (at least 15 GB for each installation of Windows)
OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion or later, OS X Lion 10.7.4 or later, or Mac OS X Snow Leopard v10.6.8 or later. To identify your computer's processor, memory, and Mac OS X version, choose Apple menu > About This Mac.
Internet connection required for product activation, select features, and online updates.

  • Late 2012 Mac mini upgrade ssd - also install parallels 8 and windows 7

Late 2012 Mac mini (16gb memory) SSD install - samsung 840 pro 512 gb.  I am looking to install this new SSD as possibly a dual drive setup almong with the stock HDD 500gb in order to: make the system faster (with more storage etc.), possibly use the stock drive as a backup drive and I also want to run parallels 8 with windows 7.
I have ordered the data doubler kit from Owc and am wondering exactly how to setup properly.  Can I simply install new drive in the upper bay (and move stock drive to lower bay)? Then migrate the data from the stock drive then after that's complete run the setup for parallels?  I am also confused as far as using trim enabler or not?  I was also wondering how much space/memory is recommended for windows 7 partition?
-Thanks in advance for your suggestions

NOTE: A small number of 2012 units were shipped with the drive mounted in the upper drive bay rather than the more typical lower bay shown in this video. If you have a 2012 or later model, you will want to determine the configuration of your Mac mini's drives prior to ordering. To do this, open Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app and click on the grey drive icon at the left-edge of the window. If you see "Lower" after the "Connection ID" at the bottom-left corner of the window, you may proceed using the standard installation instructions. If you see "Upper" then you have a special configuration which will need additional components, and you will need to also refer to the Addendum video.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/DIYIMM11D2/
Some users have reported problems with an SSD being the boot drive in the upper bay. They have not reported problems with a HD boot from either bay To avoid the problem I would move the HD (if it is in the lower bay) to the upper bay and install the SSD in the lower bay.
I allocated 64 GB for Win 7 in Parallels abd 4 GB Of 16 installed). You can change them later after you install so it is not that importent what you specify initially.

  • Need advice about Mac Pro and Windows networking

I currently have 2 machines at work: One HP Windows PC (high configuration) and a PowerMac G5 2GHz dual. I'm basically close to purchasing a new Mac Pro to replace both machines but need some advice. I do the majority of design work on the Mac. However I need the Windows PC to also do some design work but mainly use it to connect into the windows network at work. Basically I need to be able to access the network drives (which are set up with Novell Netware, with IPX turned off), Novell GroupWise email system and connect to the internet through the LAN. Can I do this with a Mac Pro, with either Bootcamp or Parallels? Is there any sacrifice in terms of performance in using Bootcamp or Parallels? The end result I want is similar to what I am doing at the moment - at the moment I use a PC to network and the Mac to design, side by side with each other. What I want is to do this from one machine, not two. (I also need the PC side of things as I need to use some software that isn't available on the Mac, eg. bespoke databases that run on PC). Is it easy to network under Bootcamp/Parallels? What pitfalls are there that I need to be aware of?

When your running Windows via bootcamp, you are essentially Running windows on a PC architecture. You will have all the same capabilities that you have now.
When you use Parallels to run Windows, you are running Windows as a virtual machine running within the confines of the Mac OS. The advantage is that you can run multiple OS's at the same time, and easily share files and data between them. The disadvantage is that the OS running within Parallels has a slightly performance hit, meaning you are not running as fast as the bootcamp version, but the performance hit is very slight. The only place that Parallels is lacking at the moment is in support of 3D or accelerated graphics. That is Parallels currently cannot make use of a graphics card 3D capabilities or advance GPU options. Parallels has stated their intent is to provide better graphic card support in the near future.
With all this in mind, I don;t see any reason why you cannot use Parallels for your Windows networking needs, and the Mac for your design needs, all at the same time. You will need of course to ensure you have enough RAM to support both OS's if you intend to run them at the same time.

  • MBA 13", Parallels 6, and Windows 7 Pro installation

Has anyone else experienced a longer than usual "completing installation" screen when they installed Windows 7 Pro? More specifically, installing Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) onto a flash drive (thumb drive)? I've already "force quit" Parallels once and re-started my virtual machine. It returns to the "completing installation" screen.

I am not sure if the transfer speed of USB 2.0 was causing a delay in the installation. I opted to install the copy of Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) onto my MacBook Air hard drive.

  • I have parallels 7 and windows 7, how do I use Boot Camp and windows

I have Parallels  version 7 installed on my MacPro5,1 mid 2010 (3.2ghz quad core) OSX 10.6.8
My question, can I run Windows from the Parallels 7 using Boot Camp app, or do I have to install it with Boot Camp on a  different partition ?
I have never used Boot Camp before so this is puzzling ?
I want to run a few of my PC games better than in Paralels 7 .

I thought the Mac were finicky with which hard drive they use.
I remember getting a 3.5 floppy for my IIe then many years later getting a 80meg HD then up to a IIgs ( loved that thing). Formatting and rebuilding HardDrive swapping out the smaller HD's..
Then a Mac IIci, last was wife's QuickSilver before this MacPro5,1..
It seemed so simple back then before serial- ATA, then. Started learning Windows vista (2008) on my mom's Asus laptop now Windows 7 ?
Getting more Mac like all the time...  A friend who tried the Sata 3 and blew something on his pc laptop fixed it..
Thank God formatting drives is easy, only back up the data you need before doing anything with a drive..
Thanks again for the information and Merry CHristma and a Happy New Year !!

  • Newest 15-inch MacBook Pro, Parallels 5, and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

With the newest 15-inch MacBook Pro's on the market and with Parallels 5, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit should work, correct?

Yes and with Parallels 5 you get full Windows 7 support (Parallels 4 Win7 support wasn't so good) and 5 now runs in 64-bit mode on Snow Leopard (Parallels 4 only ran in 32-bit mode) so you can use more than 4GB RAM

  • Parallels Desktop and Windows Domain

Ive installed Parallels 3 onto my MacBook and am now using Windows XP Pro.
Ive tried to join my Windows OS to my domain on our Windows 2003 Server but the computer cannot find the domain. I think its something to do with the network connection with the Mac preventing the outward connection.
Anyone know how to use a Windows Domain through Parallels 3?
    PLease help

I would suggest changing the network settings in parallels so that your virtual host is getting an IP address straight from your companies DHCP server.
Dont use shared networking but bridged networking.

  • How do I remove parallels 6 and Windows 7 from mountain lion.

Hi guys I expect you all know that parallels six is no longer compatible with mountain lion. I do not want to upgrade to parallels seven but I do not now know how to uninstall parallels and the Windows 7 partition.
    Anybody got any ideas?
    Cheers.

The uninstaller is located on the DVD or in the .dmg file you obtained when you purchased it. Otherwise,
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind 4.9, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
    AppZapper 2.0.1
    AppDelete 3.2.6
    Automaton 1.50
    Hazel
    AppCleaner 2.1.0
    CleanApp
    iTrash 1.8.2
    Amnesia
    Uninstaller 1.15.1
    Spring Cleaning 11.0.1
Look for them at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • Could you help me to control a DC motor with the parallel port and windows 2000?

I have labview 5.1 and i want to control my application throught the internet

I would recommend upgrading to LabVIEW 7.0 for a couple of reasons. First, LabVIEW 6.1 introduced remote front panels which allows you to control a VI through a web browser. Setting up remote front panels is very simple and that alone is worth the upgrade. As far a using the parallel port you can use VISA to send/receive commands via the parellel port if you are using a motor controller with a parellel interface. If you are talking about using the port on a bit level to control the motor, LabVIEW 7.0 ships which an example of how to do basic digital input output with the parallel port.
