  • Confusion about recovery

    Hi ,
I am new to the DBA field and I have a confusion about recovery.
The confusion is if a database is in noarchivelog mode can a database be recovered from commited changes that were there in the redo log files ?
If I provide the path name of the redo log files while using recover database using cancel will it work at all given that the database is in noarchivelog mode ?
Please help to clear my doubts..

Oracle can use the Online Redo Logs for Recovery. Normally this happens in the case of Instance Recovery (e.g. from a server crash or shutdown abort) -- where the datafiles are not restored from a prior backup.
If you restore datafiles from a prior backup, you are doing a media recovery. In NOARCHIVELOG mode, you could not have run a backup with the database OPEN, so the backup would have been run with the database SHUTDOWN or MOUNTed. At the subsequent startup, transactions would be in the online redo logs only until LGWR does a "wrap around" and overwrites the first redo log used after the startup. It is only within this window that transactions are in the redo logs.+
Remember that LGWR uses a "round-robin" algorithm to cycle through the online redo logs. So, if the Online Redo Log that was CURRENT at the time of the backup has been overwritten, you cannot use the Online Redo Logs for a RECOVERy+._
You must also ensure that there are no NOLOGGING operations !!
One thing that you might trip up on is the behaviour of CTAS. A "CREATE TABLE AS SELECT" is, by default LOGGING in an ARCHIVELOG database. However, it is automatically a Direct Path operation in a NOARCHIVELOG database ! So the blocks for such a table would be "corrupt" if you attempt a recovery from the Online Redo Log as the row inserts are not captured.

  • About Recovery Wizard

Hi, I have a doubt about recovery wizzard... well I need to recover my laptop to it original state but I already created 2 patitions, So i was thinking about backup everything but is a lot... and I saw an option at recovery wizard's menu that says "don't delete patitions" and I thought that would leave my partitions without changes... but at the next screen it says that all patition data would be deleted, so I'm a bit confussed :/ can someone help me? is there a way to recover my system without losing my partitions?
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have multiple partitons on my system as well, with one used as a data partition.  When I selelct the option to "Recover without changing the hard drive partitions" it only deletes the actual Windows install partition.  It doesn't change any of the others.  All data in the partition that you select to recover to will be lost, but it will NOT delete any of the data in any of the other partitions.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • About Recovery ....plz help

i am having a confusion about recovery....when i try to make recovery it says that "the pc will be set to factory state"...........it means does the recovery formates only C drive data or the entire drives data.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

If the recovery type that you choose will format and partition only the Windoiws partition it will state that.
If you choose a factory image recovery, then the entire hard disk will have the partitions deleted, then repartitioned  and formatted as appropriate in the OEM factory partition scheme as delivered.
If you choose minimal system recover then only the C: (Windows) partition will be deleted, formatted and recreated with minimal HP software.

  • Few questions about recovery on P100-400

    Good evening all,
I have a few questions about recovering my laptop...
So, I was thinking if the only way to clean my entire disk is to use the Recovery DVD?
I ask this because I think that the computer becomes too "heavy" with all the applications it came with. So I was wondering if I can format the Hard Drive instead of recover it.
If I format the drive do I loose warranty? Is there any future problem related to genuine software?
It's possible to install Windows XP Pro (and not the actual windows xp media center) with the original Operative system's product key?
    Thank you.
    Best Regards.

    Hello
I will try to give you few answers and I hope it will help you.
    > So, I was thinking if the only way to clean my entire disk is to use the Recovery DVD?
    > I ask this because I think that the computer becomes too "heavy" with all the applications it came with. So I was > wondering if I can format the Hard Drive instead of recover it.
I do not understand what you mean with I can format the Hard Drive instead of recover it but you can do follow: install OS using delivered recovery media and after doing this remove all applications you do not need. After doing this maybe your notebook will not be heavy anymore.
    > If I format the drive do I loose warranty?
    NO.
    > Is there any future problem related to genuine software?
I do not know what you mean exactly
    > It's possible to install Windows XP Pro (and not the actual windows xp media center) with the original Operative system's product key?
No. Something like this is not possible. Product key belongs to delivered and preinstalled OS.

  • Question about Recovery CD and the Vista anytime upgrade

    Hi,
I purchased a toshiba laptop about a year ago now, it came pre-installed with vista home premium.
I would like to do a complete clean of my system as its been useless lately and have not done one since i purchased.
It only came with - a product recovery disc and windows anytime upgrade.
But I'm worried because if i do a product recovery i have not got the actual vista disc it SHOULD have and will not have vista on my laptop or any of the files that toshiba put on it.
    What do i do??
What does a Product Recovery disc actually have on it and do?? What is the Windows anytime upgrade disc????
I've been told by microsoft and I.T. technicians all over that i should have had a vista installation disc in the box even though the fact that it came pre-installed.
    Please Help

    > It only came with - a product recovery disc and windows anytime upgrade.
As you said youve got the Product Recovery disk.
This Toshiba disk contains the Toshiba image.
The image is a package and it contains Windows OS, Toshiba drivers, tools, Utilities and additional software.
The usage of the Recovery CD will set the notebook back to the factory settings!!!
Therefore just boot from the Recovery CD and follow the instruction on the screen.
    Just for info:
The recovery CD will format the whole HDD but I see that a backup is not important for you.
    Cheers

  • Question about Recovery Media Creator

Hello everyone, first of all, I don't know if this question should be in this catergory, but I thought this would be the best to post in.
My question is about the Recovery Media Creator procces. I was about to create the recovery DVD and I noticed there are several Recovery Media options (Recovery Media 1 to Recovery Media 3).
My question is, what are the differences between them? Does it matter if I only check one of them so I would need less DVD's or a smaller USB?
    Thanks in advance.
PS. excuse my grammar or bad explanation if there is any mistake.

Using Toshiba recovery media creator recovery image saved on HDD will be copied on DVDs or USB media and it will be created as bootable media.
How many discs must be used depends on recovery image. For some notebooks 2 discs are needed and for some of them you need 3 discs.
The tool gives you also info which medias you can use and suggest you, for instance which USB device you need. For my U940 is 16 GB USB listed as suggested due to 9,2 GB recovery image.

  • Confusion about recovery from tag

    Hi All,
We had a situation where we need to restore and recover to point in time until 24th June. One of our colleagues at first restored the controlfile from 24th June backup using below script..
    run

    restore database from tag 'PACERPRD_LEVEL0_174_24';
    switch datafile all;
    recover database;
    release channel c1;
    release channel c2;

    release channel c4;
The tag 'PACERPRD_LEVEL0_174_24' was also from 24th datafile backup.
Please suggest whether the database was restored until 24th or it was restored to the current data. Please help us to understand.

If you would look up the recover database command in the online documentation,
    you would notice the following
nowhere in your code you restored the controlfile, so you are using the current controlfile
nowhere in your code you are using 'set until' and you are not using the 'until clause' of the recover database command
This means you performed complete recovery, until now.
Please spend a bit of time to read the documentation and to understand what they are taking about.

  • Basic questions about recovery/repair preparation

When I got my machine, over two years ago, I made repair disks on DVD's per Toshiba's instructions. Now, with my nightly backups, I have it make a system disk image on a NAS device.
If I were to have a large failure and need to restore my system,  is there anything I can do now that would prevent me from having to go back to my inital system install of two+ years ago and start reinstalling everything?
I guess what I'm wondering is if would making another set of more recent repair disks be useful at all in giving me a "jump start" on recovery and how my scheduled system disk image fits into the picture. I've heard some folks say system disk images from a NAS device can't be used but they were not particularly credible sources so I don't know.
Probably pretty basic questions, but having recently had a scare with my machine, I want to be sure I'm as prepared as I can be.
    Thanks.

If you cannot boot from an optical disc or flash drive to a program that restores from that NAS image, Sally, then it's useless. What system/procedures are you using? Read the manual.
The original recovery discs in my view are not very helpful. I would use them only to establish whether hardware is at fault when debugging a problem. Daily backups are the best source of recovery. We keep ours for ten days and test the recovery procedure from time to time.
Most of us who make backup disk images create them on an external drive connect via USB. Windows 7 already has such a backup program. One can boot from a repair disc to restore that image.
As you realize, this is important Let's sort it out.

  • HT1391 how do I speak to a tec expert about recovery lost or deleted itunes media?

I accidently deleted my itunes from my external harddrive, where is was stored and or back up. How do I speak to a itunes expert to talk me through the recovery process?

How do I speak to a itunes expert to talk me through the recovery process?
You don't. It's not an iTune sissue. It is a user and OS issue.
You restore it from your most recent backup.
You can redownload your previous iTunes purchases but everything else is gone.

  • Questions about recovery discs and partitioning Satellite A200-QH0

I bought a Satellite A200-QH0 model in Australia and due to lack of forums in our country I'd like to ask some questions here if that's ok.
The notebook contains 3 partitions - a 1.6GB "EISA Configuration" partition, the large OS partition, and the recovery partition. So I've made the recovery DVD??s using the Recovery Disc Creator tool as we aren't supplied with an actual disc. But I would like to know what these discs will do? My questions:
    1. Will they truly return the hard drive back to _exactly_ how it was including the partition layout and pre-installed software?
    2. Will the recovery DVDs work even if the drive has been repartioned? I would like to split the system partition to give space for data files etc. But will this extra partition stop the recovery procedure working properly?
Please understand that I'm not interested in reformatting the entire drive. I just want to split the OS partition. But in case I have to replace the drive in the future or something I'd like to know how close to "original" these discs will get me, no matter what I do to the drive?
    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi
Im not 100% sure how the recovery works on the Toshiba Australian notebooks but I presume the Recovery CD contains the Toshiba image with the Windows OS, drivers, tools and utilities.
I think if you would use the Recovery CD then the whole HDD will be formatted and all partitions will be erased.
I think the recovery partition will be not created using the recovery CD because the recovery CD was already created so the recovery partition is not necessary anymore

Which Zen? If it's a Zen Micro you need to gently remove the battery for a moment and then replace it and the restart your Zen Micro <i> while holding the switch to ON</i>.
It will go into Recovery Mode.
Select Disk Cleanup, let it finish [might take a minute or 2] and then select Reboot.
Please do not select <i>Replace Firmware</i> unless told to by Creative Support!
It's better to keep the Zen Micro's charge 'topped up' after your initial charging. Running it flat isn't good for the battery and it can sometimes lead to the Zen freezing.Message Edited by skb on 0-02-2006 09:33 PM
