About remote conections

Sorry if this looks like the kind of "use google" thread but I'm planning on setting a ssh conection between my laptop and my desktop PC wanting to connect to my desktop while I'm not at home.
For that to work, I need some kind of interface that allows me to have an static ip or something like that, unvariable, redirecting me to my variable IP at home.
I remembered dynDNS and No-IP, also I was thinking of logmein's Hamachi, but as far as my knoweledge goes, I can't tell what could be the better option to choose.
Between two linux installs, what option can serve me better?

if your router supports dynDNS or no-ip I would use that to keep it all updated and only allow ssh access via keys

Questions about Remote Desktop?

I didnt see a link to a "Remote Desktop" forum, so I posted here hoping to get a couple of questions answered.
Im going to sweeping and installing the new OS to 12+ 3yo Macbooks, and have a barrage of software that needs to be installed on all the machines. To include: Snow Leopard, iWork 09, iLife 09, Remote Desktop, Deep Freeze, and CS3. All the software was purchased thru the Education site, for the use on multiple Macs on the same network.
Essentially we're trying to optimize the process of loading software individually on each machine, and want to possibly make a CLONE of 1 Macbook that we will install all software, set System Preferences with Guest Accounts and Parental Controls, for our Mac Computer Lab, that we run at our Carrer/Technical School.
We want to make it seemless with Remote Desktop, Account Privleges, and parental controls to be able to not only monitor but to make the computers SUPER STABLE to handle the students and their sometimes improper use of the computers
QUESTION: After reading up on the new Remote Desktop and its Auto Install features....is this a tool that would help obtain our goals quicker that installing all the software on each computer indivudually.
Right now, we were going to sweep, install new OS, and software on one machine. Using SuperDuper or something comprable to make a cloned copy of the HD, and using the clone to boot and run each computer with the exact settings, software and preferences that we intially set on the first computer
DOES ANY OF THIS SOUND DOABLE THRU REMOTE DESKTOP AUTO INSTALL?
DOES THE ROUTE WE PLAN ON TAKING SOUND LIKE A SOLID PLAN TO ACCOMPLISH OUR GOAL?
If you answered yes to anyone of those, if you can give any insight on what you know or have done in the past that might help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED

You can't install Snow Leopard Remotely. Think about it.
What you could do - and assuming you have OSX Server - is install 10.6 on one mac, get it fully up to date, install the remaining applications - assuming site licenses - use the System Image Utility on the Server (or a Client with the application installed) to create a NetBoot Image of that built workstation. Image the rest using OSX Server's NetBoot Service. I've done numerous site installations using OSX Server and NetBoot (60 and more individual workstations) in a day or two depending on the Software installed.

Apart from the initial OS install - Yes. You can install incremental OS Updates using ARD easily and quickly. Again if you have OSX Server you can utilise it's Software Update Service to achieve the same thing quickly and easily.
If you don't have OSX Server you can by all means do this the way you're saying. You don't even need to use SuperDuper - why pay for something that can be done for free with what's already supplied? All you need is a firewire cable, target disk mode and the Restore option in Disk Utility. The more firewire cables you have the sooner you'll get it done.
It does not really matter what you're using for your Network although a Time Machine Capsule is adequate enough.

Questions about remote control and infrared port Qosmio F20

My Toshiba Qosmio F20 comes with a remote control funcioning through a infrared device on the front of the computer.
Regarding this I have 2 questions:
1. How do I configure additonal functionality through the remote control? (Like launching and controlling Winamp?)
2. How do I connect other devices, like my cellular phone, pdas etc., to the infrared device on my computer?

the Remote Control delivered with the Qosmio F20 is designed only for Windows XP Media Center Edition (all Remote Control's which are designed for Windows XP Media Center Edition work only with Media Center or Windows Media Player). Other program's like Winamp were not supported by these Remote Control's.
I believe, the Remote Control's are made by Microsoft and for a wide palette of product's (the Infrared Transceiver is on nearly all Media Center PC's e.g. Siemens-Fujitsu, the same). So it's a little bit tricky to support more program's then Media Center or Windows Media Player.
For other program's you need a second Remote Control like this one:

Confusion about remotes and keymappings

So extra/v4l-utils provides both keymaps and some utils for assigning keys on a remote control to actual keyboard key presses. What I can't figure out is how I can redefine a key press on my remote to a keyboard input. In other words, what translates the key on the remote to a keypress on the actual keyboard?
$ grep KEY_UP /etc/rc_keymaps/streamzap
0x28d0 KEY_UP
Right now, the "KEY_UP" key makes my cursor go up just like a keypress of the up arrow botton. Where is the file that maps "KEY_UP" to "UP ARROW"?

It would seem that you are in kind of situation that i was with my television card and remote in past, where the guides on around linuxtv.org did guide forward rather good in manner of card/remote itself.
Thing is that of where you have an external remote controlled plugged into usb that has nothing in between and sends commands to what understands it ?
Like in term of my momentarily experiment of xbmc being aware of directions but not the "ok/select" key ?
The good choice forward is to figure on how LIRC seems to be supported so the commands that are being send could be used from own supplied choices from configuration written.
At Archlinux installing package of lirc gets a bit further, but configuration is in need, where looking at with command "cat /proc/bus/input/devices" shows event of remote controlled we should be listening at, in my case it would be named as "cx88 IR ***", and line of "kbd event**" shown.
Knowing that the default package installs an own configuration to be readen when started as rc.conf or manually with "rc.d start lircd", the file of /etc/conf.d/lircd.conf should reflect into wanted choices, where first is "LIRC_DEVICE=/dev/input/event**" of the one that is being readen, to other value of i have been using since first getting into area of "LIRC_DRIVER=dev/input", what just works as choice being made, could be default in this area, but i cannot gurantee that. Also notice in this choice there is no slash in front of path.
After those of pointing into spots of what is to be used is last file of lircd.conf what is usually stored at "/etc/lirc/lircd.conf" and could be included as separate file in with last choice of "LIRC_CONFIGFILE=/etc/lirc/lircd.conf", meaning of file is somewhat to understand given value after keypress and what it tells into console/application/likewise that is there when keypress is being done.
To write the file you would have to use irrecord application that comes along with lirc-utils package and do that as root, using the wanted input method and event to be readen, also not forgetting the required name of file to store information, irrecord wants you to press key to catch the time of repeats transmitter sents and later on the name of "button" you are wanting to choose.
Note: That listing can be seen with "irrecord -l" and if you choose first "key_ok", you can rename it into "Ok" later on for good and no real issues other than making certain in case of some applications to understand that of "Ok" in form of. As of writing this informative path of my own usage of remote it gets into spot of where likewise any application that has known entries or commands to be used, could be used from file known as likewise "/~.lircrc" or was it "/~.lircmd", that is user own defined commands from specific buttons to send into applications if being listen there.
In case of multimedia center application like xbmc, you need own "/~.xbmc/userdata/Lircmap.xml" (example exists in harddrive after install) or consider long path of writing an pointed application by rc/cmd by user defined values of sending an command after press from remote, where that of later is perhaps accepted in case of any possible application that can have key presses and name of likewise command is known into user.
Also on when all configuration of /etc/conf.d/lircd.conf and included keymap like /etc/lirc/lircd.conf you can read after starting "lircd" by using application "irw", where you press an key and it shows what is the command of pressing it, like "key_ok" or "Ok", determined by that of keymap made previously.
PS. Hope that made enough sense in the area, somewhat forward going to use simple matter of lirc itself and not try alternative (if any), but one that works for me and remote control of applications likewise xbmc/vdr/mplayer and some other i don't remember anymore from past.

What I want is the following:
1. º How do I record values from a graph in Excel by pressing a button (eg recording).
2. º How do I show my power picture and sound on my pc through the microphone and webcam laptop by pressing two buttons, for example sound "on" and picture "on" and do the "off" to both.
3. º How do I power fizar my IP, since I already did what was on this page and I can not communicate with any other PC.

I'm sorry, but from your description I have no idea what you are trying to do. Ok, I see that LV is doing something, and that you want to acquire sound and images, and that the web is apparently involved. But,
How is Excel involved?
What is the web interface doing?
Where are the buttons you talk about pressing located?
What are the sound and video sources?
What version of LV are you using?
What is the network you are using?

hello
i own a small design bs.
i have two macs at my office and two laptops at home
i work at home a lot and shuttle projects back and forth on drives. however, i often still find i need files at work machines which inevitably require a car drive back to the office.
i have heard abt remote desktop but do not know how it works and i have been leery per security.
can someone tell me how to set it up and advise me on some degree of resonable security.

You don't actually need ARD if this is all you want? You can use what you already have with 10.5 and 10.6 as VNC Server & Client are part of those versions of the OS. There are many posts in this forum and elsewhere explaining what you need to do:

Make sure that your MTS dispatcher and listener are correctly
configured for IIOP. You can try connecting via the session shell
(sess_sh utility) from a command line to see if the IIOP
connection is working. The service URL is of the format:
sess_iiop://host_ip_address:listener_port:SID
-or if you connect directly to the dispatcher-
sess_iiop://hostipaddress:dispatcher_port

Config remote conection to Sun AS7 from studio5

Can anyone help me I am wanting to set up my dev enviroment from my NT workstation to a remote box running Sun AS7 which is running on RH 7.2
Can some one point me to a tutorial or some instruction on how to config the remote box as my dev box.

You need to install some bootstrap code on the tools-side to be able to talk to a remote AS7 instance. To do this start the AS7 installer and choose "Application Server Administration Client".
Then, using Studio 5 (or 5update1), set the App Server 7 home (from the App Server 7 property sheet in the runtime tab) to the directory you where installed the admin client.
Finally, register an admin server with your remote machine name, port, admin user and password.
Note that this remote admin will only work with App Server 7 Standard Edition, not Platform Edition.

Email from Yamaha about Remote Settings Someone PLEASE translate...

The Yamaha KX8 MIDI controller has transport buttons built right onto the controller. I've got the keyboard set to "Logic" mode and it won't work, this is what they told me to do...
From Yamaha:
"You'll have to contact Apple for this issue. Check in your Logic Manual for "Remote Settings". These settings should exist within the software. It will require you to set the remote in/out, which should be set to KX8 - "port 2".
The KX8 ports are configured as follows:
port 1 - basic midi data
port 2 - remote data
port 3 - midi general data
port 4 - KX editor data
Once the remote parameters are assigned properly, the KX will function as a remote for Logic.

Question about Remote application and iTunes on an PC

I am considering getting an iPod touch to use as a remote for iTunes on a PC. I am wondering if one is required to manually launch iTunes for this to work, or is it sufficient to have iTunes load into the system tray when booting. The latter would definitely be more convenient for how I want to use the setup.
