  • Need help using the selection tool

    Hi all,
I have some strange (to me) occurrences while using the 'quick selection tool'...
    Explanation
    I'm using PS Elements 11 on a Win 7 (64) PC.
What I want to do is to create a new pic from an existing pic.  The existing pic's background is unsuitable for what I want.  But the FG is what I need.  I thought that selecting the FG object and placing into a new pic would be what I needed using the <quick selection tool>.
To do this, I am trying to use the <quick selection tool>.  I've had varying degrees of success using it.  One main thing I don't understand & pretty much renders my project useless & undoable, is the fact that whenever I use <refine edge> so that I can refine my edge selection, my pic is immediately lost or taken away.  Since I have no idea as to what's happening, I am forced to close the pic (W/O saving changes, of course) & then re-opening the pic.  All's well until I click the <refine edge> button again, then, my pic disappears AGAIN!
My guess is that maybe the pic is somehow transformed to a layer or something.  But, how can I turn this behavior off and not make my pic disappear??
There are a few more details about this <selection tool> that I'm muddy on.  Is there something where I can read more about its use?  I would love to know more, but how?  Where?
I've now read the online manual part about selection tools.  Although it shed some light, I'm still needing more.
I am not a constant user of PSE, rather,  I only use it on occasions.  Normally, I use its scanning features.  I may play around with a few other features, but I also know that PSE offers many other powerful features, I rarely, if ever, use.

  • Can no longer use my selection tools - help!

while cutting, copying and pasting, I accidentally clicked on something in the top bar that caused all of the tools that are in the left-hand side (default) of my Photoshop CS 4 workspace (and the picture) to remain a black pointed arrow which is the mouse pointer. I tried exiting from the bridge and photoshop proper, shutting down and restarting my computer but it looks like I screwed up my photoshop.
How can I reset my photoshop to get all of my selection tools back?

Ok I pressed command + alt + shift upon starting photoshop, and this is what comes up (see screenshot) - what do I do now? And about the Photoshop CS 4 patch v11.0.1 - should I d/l this? Will this help me? How to I trash my prefs? How do I start from a new user-account - I didn't even know that I had a user-account?

  • Path Selection Tool issues

After reading up on some of the problems people are having with the path/shape changes in CC 2014, I haven't seen an exact mention of the problem I am having so here I am.
    2 part problem really:
    1. When using the Path Selection Tool or Direct Selection Tool, sometimes I am unable to switch to any other tool using a keyboard shortcut, regardless of isolation mode or Active/All layers toggles. I press Z or B or whatever, and nothing happens. I have to click the tool icon to get it to work. This seems to happen randomly.
    2. When using the Path Selection or Direct Selection Tool, after a few operations of moving points around, when I move to another layer to work on another shape the shape outline and the handles are not visible. When in All Layers mode, the layer is switched to the new shape as expected and the Properties panel shows details of the shape path but I can't see the outline. The only way I have found to 'fix' this is to draw a new shape or reopen the document or Photoshop itself.
Are these 'problems' just me missing some new way of working brought into the shape tools or is it as borked as it seems?
    Thanks

No I have been using CC for about 8 months or so. I updated to CC 2014 a couple of days ago. I have been using the shapes with no issues up till now. The changes to the shape system seemed to bring it closer to illustrator, so it was logical. A change from the past, but I thought I was up to speed with it.
As for keystrokes to reproduce the problems I am having - that is part of the problem it seems kind of random as to when it happens.
When working on a shape, pressing return will turn the outline on and off as expected. Pressing esc will turn it off as expected, double clicking will take it into isolation mode as expected but then sometimes, the whole outline becomes unresponsive and it isn't visible. The shape layer is selected and the layer selection changes as expected when I have All Layers mode on and I click different shapes. The path is also selected in the Path panel. It shows up in the properties window too. Clicking/double clicking the shape, return and esc make no difference. I don't get it its all happening randomly though
Then I have the 'unable to switch tools' problem where shortcuts for different tools stop working. I have to click the tool icon to switch. Drawing a new shape brings it all back As I said in my first post, it could just be me missing something but i'm stumped. At this point i'm going to try a reinstall but I don't think it'll make much difference with something like this.
    Thanks for the reply though.

  • Previously i was able to select tools in the bridge and then select image processor to make jpegs from my tiffs, the image processor tab is no longer on the tools drop down menu

previously while in bridge, i was able to select tools in the drop down menu and then select image processor to get to the page where i can make tiffs and jpegs. That option is no longer available in the drop down tool selection. How do I make jpegs from my tiffs now in the bridge.
    thanks

In current Firefox releases the search bar on the about:home page and the about:newtab page have an autocomplete=off attribute that prevents Firefox from saving form data and now show search suggestions just like you get on the regular Google search page.

  • Can't move objects with Selection Tool

So, I just installed Illustrator CC, which I now have on a trial license.  About an hour ago, illustrator suddenly started refusing to move any objects while I'm in the Selection Tool.  I can move the objects only in Free Transform.  I use hot keys a lot, so it's really slowing me down.  I hit "V" to click on and then move an object, and then it won't move. I get the error sound, but no dialogue box pops up to explain what the error is.
Since I'm getting ready to bite the bullet and start paying a hefty monthly fee for this program when my trial runs out, this is pretty aggravating.  Anyone have any ideas what might have cause this?

    Charlie,
The following is a general list of things to try in case of serious strangenesses.
You may try the following (you may have tried/done some of them already) and see whether it helps (the following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file; 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
See posts #3 to 7 in this thread about locating the folder in CC,
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1297845?tstart=0
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool, and reinstall.

  • Quick selection tool always contains minus sign

I am obviously not a very experienced Photoshop user and I have a question about the Quick Selection tool. I am using CS6 on a Mac with OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
I watched a couple tutorials and my system is behaving differently. In the tutorials I watched, when the quick selection tool is chosen the "brush" contains a plus sign. If too much area is selected, that can be corrected by holding the option/alt key and this changes the brush to a minus sign. On my computer, when I select the tool the brush always contains a minus sign. I think the tool is working OK but I wonder why I never see the plus sign inside the brush.
    Please advise.
    Thank you.

Be sure the tool isn't set to subtract in the options bar. Otherwise, try resetting the tool by right- or control-clicking the blue arrow just to the right of the tool preset (under the blue PS icon in the below screenshot) to reset the tool.

  • Quick Select Tool not working properly

    Hi Guys
I have a large photo merge image and wanted to content aware fill the missing bits. When i try to use the select tool it selects while i hold my mouse button down but as soon as i let go it seems to either disappear or jump to somewhere totally different. This only happens in the checkered part with no image, i can select things fine within the image itself.
My guess is that it won't work because the image is too large?? 48k x 5k
Thought i might just try the Spot Healing Brush instead, didn't seem to handle things too well.
Just to add to this, nothing to do with the size of the image as i can't select on a much small image either. Basically i can only select the actaully photo rather than the checkered part around the outside when i want to content fill.

After you ctrl click on the layer to load the layers transparency:
(click on the below screenshots for larger views)
    Select>Inverse
Select>Modify>Expand and use a value of about 10 pixels
(varies depending on how big your pano is)
    then Edit>Fill>Content Aware
You still might have to touch up some areas as the one above still needs.

  • Illustrator CS - Selection Tool not working correctly

    Hi all...
A customer of ours has an odd Illustrator CS problem. When she tries to use the Selection Tool to select any item, it auto-selects everything. Even if she uses the selection box by dragging the cursor over anything, it selects all the different items in the image.
Has anyone seen this or fixed it before?
    Many thanks!

    How about this?...
With the selection tool/black arrow tool, you can select the object, change the color or opacity and move it...but can't un-group it.
With the direct select tool/white arrow tool, when you try to select an individual shape to make slight changes to the path...the anchor points will show up as you mouse over them, but nothing shows when you click on the path.
When drawing a new shape with the pen tool, the anchor points don't show as you draw the shape. No handles appear...but the shape shows up. It's like feeling your way around a dark room on instinct.
...and it's only doing this in one particular file. When another file is opened all the quirks listed above do not happen. Each tool works as it should.

  • Selecting multiple objects with Direct Select tool

I'm working in InDesign CS4 on a pc and am having trouble with the Direct select tool. I go through my document selecting multiple objects, change the color of the selected boxes only to find that about half of my objects have "deselected" themselves. Has anyone else had this problem? Or does anyone have a fix I could try? Thanks!

I know, I was pretty vague.
Are you continuing to hold the shift key with each addition? Yes
Are you trying to selct things on more than one spread? No
Are you being careful to click inside each object other than an image and on the frame for an image? Yes

  • Selection tools not working properly -- Illustrator CS6

The two selection tools in CS6 Illustrotor not working properly.  They don't select the object when I click and drag a box around them and the handles on drawing path won't stay highlighted when I use the direct selection tool so I can adjust them -- Worked in Illustrator for about 12 years and never had this problem.

    Have you tried:
    View > Show edges

  • Selection tool

I have been using the pen tool in a particular file for about 2 days or so without closing.
I went to use the Select Tool (v).
For some reason, there is no box surrounding my objects for example, if I were to draw a 5 pointed star shape, then select it with the direct selection tool, there is no square bounding box around it.
So I can't resize/rotate objects from corner points because there are no bounding box anchors.
It seems as if it could be an option that I may have changed, but because of the duration of this illustration, It could have been a day or 2 ago.
And I don't remember changing anything.
I have restarted the program and my system. (Since when does that help on a unix system?)
    Thanks in advance.
    Curtis

Thanks, it makes sense because I had been using blend a lot.
Command Alt B and Command Shift G a lot for this project.
    Thanks!

  • Selection Tool behavior

And here I mean "The Selection Tool" not "direct" or "perspective"...
I'm taking a Lynda.com video training course (AI CS6 One-on-One/Fundamentals) in which the instructor is demonstrating (Chapter 7) moving and duplicating objects by clicking the anchor point with the black selection tool and dragging to the diagonal alternate selection point. He and I both have Smart Guides turned on...but when he - after clicking on an anchor point in a selected object and with mouse button down - mouses over another anchor point in the selected object the black mouse pointer turns white, giving a solid cue as to where to drop the object to move (or, with alt- on pc or opt- on Mac, exactly duplicate the object) to an adjascent place. Mine doesn't and it's much harder for me to get a visual cue as to where to make the drop. The smart guide says "intersect" at a particular point and it usually seems right but it's different behavior than on Deke McClelland's otherwise excellent and informative video.
I don't know if I have a preference set differently than the instructor, but I'd much rather have the behavior he is demonstrating than what I've got.
Also, I note that when mousing around anchor points there is a change to the cursor to a double-headed arrow with a line through the center, that I don't understand (and that if  I get it and try to use it, it doesn't do what I'm trying to do with the anchor point).
If someone could point me to some documentation that details the use of that tool (particularly for moving and/or duplicating objects and constraining movement/duplication), I'd really appreciate it. Examining the reference PDF I find lots about the other selection tools but not about the primary/original one, and it obviously has multiple behaviors I'd like to see documented.
    Thanks,
    Jay

    JET:
Thanks for asking and for your interest. I just went back to reproduce the issue and found it's the same with or without the Bounding Box in sight. I get a different cue (the SmartGuides in the middle of where the tile is prospectively moving has the word "Intersection" and two green lines...if I press the Alt key to copy I see a white arrow and a black one with it...but the effect Deke is trying to show, with the black arrow turning white upon hovering or "mousing" over the anchor point, is missing, whether Bounding Box is set to Show or Hide.
As long as the word Intersection means the same thing I can work with it, but it seems like the arrow turning white is a much more positive cue. Again, thanks...

  • Skipping to the top of the document when text selection tool selected

This may be difficult to explain. But often after I click in the toolbar to switch over to a specific Adobe document (in windows 7) that I previously opened and that is open to a page other than page 1 and with the text select tool has been selected, if I click into the text on the page (say page 4) and then scroll down with the mouse wheel to get to page five, the program will jump back to the beginning of page 1. (display is set at single page - fit page). I like Acrobat very much, but I find this to be extremely irritating and wasteful when trying to select text from and navigate a large document. Can you please tell me why this occurs?

I READ the user guide, which told me view>format bar>show format bar. I am talking about the bar that shows how to set the format-- font, spacing, etc. That has gone gray, and eliminated all the settings so I can't alter the settings or print.
    Mari,
We're here to try to help you; we get some satisfaction out of helping folks to get along with their Apple Pages software. If you just take this one step at a time, I'm sure we can sort it out.
Thanks for clearing up what your primary issue is. You had Fruhulda all confused with your complaint about printing. I sort of glossed over the printing issue because you seemed to be more focused on the formatting.
Please re-read my first post - the part about the Format Bar being contextual - and let's go from there.

  • Cannot move objects with Selection Tool

Having problems moving a selcected with Selection Tool: the selection does not move.
Also cannot isolate imported picture as it always seems to be selected, even when deselected: Selection Tool always activates first layer even though I'm on another layer
Any new imported burshes i make up are not saved, even though file names shows up: only managed to save one brush
I nearly awlays have to re select stroke width everytime I use selection tools or re open file.
Are the problems due to compatibility issues with Mac OS and Illustrator CS4, as this new version is know to be very buggy in the industry.

    bottchichellee,
    Illy is Illustrator.
I apologize for the unavailability of the site, owing to some mess by the webhost. This is an extract:
Up to Illustrator 10, almost all the preference settings were included in the AIPrefs/Adobe Illustrator Prefs file, and almost all issues with corrupted settings could be solved by deleting or moving it; in some rare cases, moving or deleting the folder holding the settings was required.
From Illustrator CS on, the preference settings have been spread over a number of files/subfolders so in many cases deleting the AIPrefs/Adobe Illustrator Prefs file is not enough: the easy solution is to move the whole folder rather than trying to figure out which file(s) may be corrupted; just deleting the folder without moving it first has proved fruitless in some cases.
Therefore, the cure all consists of the following steps:
    1. Close Illustrator.
    2. Make a search including hidden files and folders and including subfolders for the folder holding the preference files; the name of the folder depends on the Illustrator version, and the position of the folder depends on the OS version. There is one folder for each version and for each user so it is important to find the relevant one.
Up to version 10, the name of the folder is Adobe Illustrator [X],
From version CS on, the name of the folder is Adobe Illustrator [X] Settings.
[X] is the version number; up to 10, it is just a number, and above that the Creative Suite version number, CS, CS2, CS3, CS4, and so on, is used (the corresponding standalone versions still have simple numbers, CS is called 11, CS2 is called 12, CS3 is called 13, and CS4 is called 14, but the version numbers with CS are used in the folder name).
    3. Either:
    a) Create a subfolder and move all the contents into it; or
    b) Move the whole folder to a place where you can find it again, such as the Desktop.
With both you may recover the contents of the folder by moving it back if the issue is not solved and get your preference settings back.
    a) requires creation of the subfolder, but it makes recovery easier, especially if you create a shortcut to the preference settings folder, and you can skip the search if/when corruption occurs again.
You may delete the folder/contents subsequently.
    4. If you have Windows Vista, restart Windows. If not, continue to 5 without delay.
    5. Restart Illustrator, and see whether the issue is solved.
If the issue is solved, and you wish to keep as many of your preference settings as possible, you may move the folder back and repeat 3) - 5) for groups/individual files/subfolders until you have found the corrupted one(s). You may also start by only moving the AIPrefs/Adobe Illustrator Prefs file.
You may also see a terse version from ADOBE: Adobe Illustrator CS4 * About preferences.
Scripts for cleaning out everything between uninstallation and reinstallation for versions CS4 and CS3:
    CS4 Clean Script, http://www.adobe.com/support/contact/cs4clean.html
    CS3 Clean Script
I believe it is possible to get a refund, but there are some options still.
