About Skype for Symbian

Is there any indication as to how long the Symbian Skype client will continue to function? Thanks.

We have been working hard to make Skype for mobile better than ever, and adopting Skype cloud enables us to drive improved battery life, improve connections and introduce exciting new features. However Symbian wasn’t built for the cloud-connected world, so we are retiring the Skype for Symbian app and focusing on bringing the best possible experience to the most popular mobile platforms: Windows Phone, iOS and Android. The Skype for Symbian app will be removed from the Nokia store today, however users that have already downloaded the app can continue to use it.
UPDATED on August 18th:
We are now permanently retiring all Skype apps for Symbian phones. As a result, within the next few weeks, you’ll no longer be able to sign in and use Skype on any Symbian phone.
You can still stay in touch with friends and family using Skype on an Android device, Nokia Lumia phone or desktop computer. You can sign into them all using the same Skype account. The latest versions of Skype for all supported devices are available here.

  • Skype for Symbian / Nokia Store Issue / Update Sky...

Well this is actually utterly and bitterly disapointing from Skype and / or Microsoft and could actually be embarassing... In what world are they living? Greed and more profit making? Excuse me but we did not see any official statement yet concerning the drop / end of Skype support of the Symbian platform.
    1) How come Skype randomly disapears from the Nokia Store without warning or an official statement from Skype and / or Microsoft?
    2) Why would there be discriminating towards Symbian / Nokia users who are forced to use an out of date version of Skype without support for Microsoft account login?
    3) Isn't Skype / Microsoft shooting themselves into their own legs? Own goal? Why would I spend for a new Nokia phone using Windows 8 Mobile OS ( and I have the money to do it ) when I got a fully working Symbian Nokia that does all what I need? Carefull, this strategy might just make people disgusted of Nokia thus indirectly the Windows 8 Mobile OS.... as we all know of the relationship between Nokia and Microsoft nowadays.
    4) The ridiculous statements I see on these forums about the phasing out of Symbian sometimes make me laugh. The developpers are just causing this artificial phase out by just being like rats leaving a sinking ship. Just show with proof that the Symbian needs a phase out... From what I know it is still very popular in Europe and Africa.
I am suprised that I had to have an outburst on these forums... I am a huge fan of Skype and the Microsoft products... Xbox and so on. But well anyway these were my points. I hope that this will be taken into consideration even though I am sure Symbian users would not ask too much, an update to be able to use the Microsoft account login would stop the inegality between the platforms concerning the ability to talk to our Msn / messenger contacts....
    Regards.

Yes your Skype for Symbian FAQ (6/2013) was of great help a few days ago when I was surprised to find that Skype had mysteriously disapeared from the Nokia / OVI Store. I had an issue with the Skype install I had on my Nokia 500 running Symbian Belle, on which I had installed Skype from Nokia / OVI store since last year, so I had to un-install it. So I went for a re-install but nothing... no Skype on Nokia / OVI Store so I tried your FAQ.

I signed on my Nokia / OVI account because this was the version I needed for Symbian Belle but the file downloaded wasn't of .sis extension but was of .dm extension. So I couldnt install it.
I managed to get an alternate install file of Skype v2.1.0.23 ( latest and maybe last for Symbian Belle ) if this can be of any help to anyone using Symbian Belle:

  • Skype for Symbian on N86 8MP

A full featured Skype for Symbian is finally available. You can get it in Ovi store  or visiting skype.com/m. It's available even for old models like N81 and N95.
This ought to be good news. But for us having the "forgotten" phone Nokia N86 8MP, one discover that Skype tells "Sorry, Skype is unavailable for your mobile.", and you can't download it. Ovi tells you "Sorry, this item is not available for the Nokia N86 8MP." Why??
But there is an option! You need to go to the Skype for Symbian developer zone https://developer.skype.com/SymbianSkype They provide a link to the latest production release http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-symbian-s60v3. Just download it, and install it on your N86 8MP. It works splendid

It installs and works sort of, chat works but thats about it.
May I take this time to express my disgust over the general state of the N97/Skype. I paid £500 for mine and have had nothing but sodding issues over sodding issue plus being lied to constantly by Nokia. Accuweather refuses to work for ANY city/town in the UK (yes I have tried every single one!) Every other country in the world gets weather info but not the uk

  • Why Skype for Symbian been discontinued?

Please Start Again Skype for Symbians ..

The reason is quite simple, this is a capitalist economy they had got the money from you, Nokia E7 is five times more in price tag than ordinary Android phone, but they are focusing on Android phones.
Irony of the fact is same nokia whom gain the value from same platform, symbian. Now ignoring it and running behind unseen wishes. It is not confirm they can gain the same value again or be lost in the pages of history but kept running...the beauty of this system.

  • Skype for symbian such a shame

    Hi nokia community,
skype for symbian on my belle nokia 701 is a complete disappointment, not even a single feature is new.
It is same old skype for symbian packed with new touch UI, and why doesn't skype support video call for latest belle devices?
Seriously it feels like living in old times, having all the hardware required on my device but still unable to make use of front cam , is nokia doing anything in this regard?
After all nokia and microsoft are partners now, they should take care of things like these, why we symbian users are left behind without any useful productivity apps like other leading OSes in market?
Please let me know your views, and is there any way I can use my device's for video calls (other than network video calls)?
Your support would be highly appreciated.

The biggest problem I have on Skype for S^3 (N8) is that voice calls are completely useless, the other end can never understand what I'm saying.  This is on 3G and Wifi networks with no other apps running in background.
The second biggest problem I'm having is that after sending an SMS (via Skype app) the message screen does not disappear and there's no confirmation that the message was sent.
I agree, Skype is completely useless with voice calls, I at first put this down to the other party trying to connect to me using video calling but after reading the above I wonder whether that was the case.

  • Skype for Symbian Belle

    Hello.
I'm wondering if skype will be ever available for Symbian Belle. If I'm visiting m.skype.com, it says "Skype isn't available for your device". They say also that they'r working hardlly every day to add new devices, but it seems like they do nothing to add Symbian Belle. I had some version of skype that was "available" for Belle, but it was wery unsable, so it's better to use nothing instead of that version. So can't Nokia do anything about it? Or does anybody know if  Skype will be available for Belle?

  • Skype for Symbian beta on n97

    I found the following:
"Am afraid i dont know about the N97 native client but you could try the new Symbian Beta (not officially supported for the N97 but some users are reporting they have installed it and it works) at least until the Native client gets released anyway."
    at this link http://forum.skype.com/index.php?showtopic=488381
Has anyone attempted this with an N97? What issues/success have you encountered? Hoping for some feedback to help me decide if I want to attempt this.

It installs and works sort of, chat works but thats about it.

  • Skype for Symbian S60V3/5 Available!

Skype is now available for download to your headset from skype.com/m

I've got Skype on my 3 N97 (with an internet bundle) and want to make skype calls to my mate in Canada. I've got a couple of questions before I do so:
1 Are international Skype to Skype calls free on my N97?
    2. Is there a charge if I call her mobile/land line? (I expect so but don't know how much)

  • [FYI] Skype for Symbian OS (not fring)

    http://share.skype.com/sites/garage/2009/12/skype_for_symbian_beta_release.html

Looks like it doesn't support Skype video calls, and S60v5 phones aren't supported either.
I'll stick with fring for the time being.

  • Will be released a new Skype version for Symbian?

A new version of Skype for Windows/Mac was released this week that adds Microsoft account compatibility and others resources about Windows Live Messenger. Aditionally, the current Symbian version don't support video calling or conference (it's terrible, I can't invite anyone to conference, I can only enter on a created conference by others).
I want to know when a new version will be available since I really need these features, and Skype is now of Microsoft and Microsoft is allied to Nokia, so... Is ironic don't release a new version!
Thank you so much and I can really apreciate if someone reply to this.
    Best regards.

No update to share on Skype for Symbian.
I think it's not worth waiting for a new version in the near future given that the Symbian Operating System is losing popularity each day.

  • Flash for symbian,is it coming?

    Hello!
I am wondering if anybody knows something about flash for symbian mobile phones.A long time ago i read somewhere that at the end of 2010 adobe would finally make it. Does anybody know if it is coming at all?
    Best regards,
    Mitja

The latest versions of Flash Lite whcih Adobe developed for mobile devices are not concurrent with the Flash versions available for Windows, Mac etc. - it is not an issue of the phone hardware being in any way inadequate.
However, you should note that Adobe does not release Flash Lite in user-downloadable form, it is always supplied to phone manufacturers for integration into phone firmware, so any new version released will only ever be available if the phone firmware is updated with the changes incorporated.

  • Skype for businss hoster roadmap?

Has anyone happened to hear anything about a "Hosting Pack" / multi-tenant setup for the new Skype for Business? Microsoft dropped the hosting pack so just wondering if they have plans to support multi-tenancy with Skype for Business.
I know its early and hasn't bee released yet.. just curious

    Hi,
So far, there isn’t too much official documents about Skype for Business. In my opinion, it should be not too big change with Lync Server 2013. However, if you want to know more information about Skype for Business, you’d better to contact Microsoft.
