  • To know about software upgrade of nokia N73

    my dear sir,

Being an S40 device, the options are very much limited in this case. You need to take the phone to Nokia Care...
..only thing you can do is, confirm that the battery is charged..(Put on charging for about 15 minutes)..and then try switching ON. If no responce then do as mentioned above.

  • How can I turn off the daily nagging about software updates?

How can I turn off the daily nagging about software updates?
I am _very_ annoyed at having to answer this every day, day after day after day.

    Thanks, PJRS.
But if I'm reading that right, the only way to get the nagging to stop is to accept all the download that Software Downloads suggest.
Quite often it pertains only to software I never use. In these cases, I'm not interested in downloading it.
And also -- if I'm understanding that document -- I have to respond every time the nagging drops down (at least once per day).
99% of the time I have no desire to download the suggested software.
In ANY case, it is outrageous that the software resorts to harassing a customer without at least a readily visible means to turning it off
SO -- please let me know what I'm misunderstanding -- thanks..

  • Worried about Software Update

I have a new MacBook Pro 17, and I installed all my old PPC programs and currently have no problems running any of them, including Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, InDesign CS, and MS Office 2004.
However, I have installed precisely NONE of the Apple software updates since getting my computer a week ago, because I'd read about so many people having problems after installing the 10.4.7 update and the QuickTime update. Am I being overly cautious? Should I install any of these updates, or are there specific updates I should avoid?
    Thank to anyone who answers!

I think you are being very overly cautious....
The updates are desinged to work, work with me and everyone else I know.
Bear in mind that which would you prefer, not updating and have the increased security risks from viruses and hackers.
Or be worried about using the free software that is desinged to protect your shiny new computer?
I'm not being overly cautious, myself. I install most updates within a few hours after they come out. I'm just providing information for people who do worry.
But do be aware that once in a rare while a Mac OS update has had a horrendous problem (there was a particularly bad one about a year - maybe longer - ago that had to be withdrawn and then re-released), and it's a good idea to be backed up so you can back out of it, in that case.
It's always a good idea to be backed up, regardless - unless you don't have anything on your computer that you care about losing.
Come on, just intsall them. besides you can sit on Apple if the update buggers up your comp, (which it won't)
Again, it has happened, and it could again. It's very rare - I agree it's not something to be overly concerned about. Yes, don't worry too much, but also, yes, do back up at least the files you can't afford to lose in case the most unlikely - but possible - thing does happen, and an update causes problems on your Mac. (Keep in mind also that, while it's very rare for a Mac OS update in itself to seriously mess up your Mac, there are plenty of situations where preexisting problems in your installation can be compounded by a major update, making your Mac unusable. Again, backups are the key to this not causing data loss.)

  • TOP questions about Software Updates - start here

How do I update the software of my Nokia device?
You can update the software of most Nokia devices by downloading the software directly to your phone, or by using Nokia Software Updater, Nokia's free PC software.
Learn how and find out which methods are available for your device at
    http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/update-your-phone/
How do I know when there is new software available for my Nokia device?
There are several ways to be notified about new sw versions for each Nokia device:
    1) Use Nokia Suite
Whenever you connect your device to the latest version of Nokia Suite with a compatible USB cable, Nokia Suite will check if there is an update for your device. Note that this notification only works when you use a USB cable connection.
    2) Check online
You can easily check the latest available version on the
    Nokia Software Update website.
Currently Nokia does not publish the expected release dates for future software versions.
What has been updated in each new software version?
Main updates are published on the
    Nokia Software Update website.
Here are some of the most common questions from the Nokia Software Update FAQ:
Why has my device changed language after updating?
After an update, your Nokia device may restart in its native language. Changing back to your preferred language can be done from the phone settings. Full instructions may vary depending on the phone model, if you need help you can download the full user guide for your phone from the support pages of your country's Nokia web site - visit www.nokia.com/support for more details.
If your Nokia device was originally manufactured for use in another country or region, using Nokia Software Updater may revert the set of available device languages to the original language set.
If your preferred language is no longer available after using Nokia Software Updater, you may need to return your Nokia device to a Nokia Care point to have this language reinstated.
Other people can update their software but I cannot, although we have the same Nokia device model. What's wrong?
Update availability is based on many things, including existing Nokia device firmware version, country, and operator. It may be due to one of these variables that your Nokia device isn't eligible for updates.
Please note that your mobile service provider, operator, or carrier may not have approved the latest Nokia device firmware available.
Nokia produces many different variants of each product (for different countries and languages) and not all variants have the latest Nokia device firmware. It is our priority to update all variants as quickly as possible, and we apologise for any delay. New software may become available at a later date, however, so please check again soon.
Why doesn’t Nokia Suite detect my device?
Sometimes the drivers for your Nokia device and associated connectivity cables can become corrupted.
To resolve this, uninstall and re-install Nokia PC Suite and Nokia Software Updater:
    - In your PC’s Control Panel, go to Add/Remove programs
    - Uninstall Nokia Suite (if there are more than one entries uninstall all of them)
    - Go to www.nokia.com/support to download and install the latest version of Nokia Suite
I am not able to use Nokia Suite on any PC and my device does not support updates directly over the air. Is there an alternative way to update my device's software?
If you are not able to use Nokia Software Updater, you can visit your nearest authorized Nokia Care Point to have your software updated. Note that this may incur a charge. Locations for Nokia Care Points globally are available at the support page for your country, for details please visit http://www.nokia.com/global/support/locations/

  • Basic information about software update

Sometimes when the Software Update has run and tells me I need to reboot, I put it off and finish what I am doing on my other programs, then later quit everything and restart. My brother tells me I should not do this since it has optimized the space on my computer and by doing other things I change that. Is this true?
He now tells me that I should not be doing anything else while downloading with software update, but I figure that if that was true, they'd warn you about it. I would be incredibly greatful if someone could clear this up!

I agree with everything written so far, but will also add my own take on this subject!
There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac, or even re-installing them, will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
The 10.4.11 Combo Updater for PPC Macs is here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eppc.html
And for Intel Macs: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx10411comboupdat eintel.html
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
More information on using Software Updater here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1338?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta. If Safari 3.1.2 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 3.0.4 (or worse still, version 2) when running 10.4.11 or 10.5 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.1.1 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, and may entail you having to reinstall an earlier operating system.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.
Additional tips on software installation here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
    • /Library/InputManagers
    • ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • Partitioning External Hard Drive- questions about software & filing system

I just got my macbook and I want to use my older external hard drive to transfer data between the macbook and my PC desktop. I have a Maxtor OneTouch II 300gb with only one partition. I have about 80gb of data already on the Maxtor. So my two questions are . .
    1. What is the best software (prefer freeware) to partition my Maxtor and keep the data I already have on it? Or is there a better way?
    2. What is the best setup for the filing system for the partitions? NTFS for one and FAT32 for the other or something else? I want to be able to both read & write to the Maxtor from both the PC and Mac. Appreciate any help anyone can throw my way.
Macbook- Black model   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm not quite sure of what you mean by:
    I would like to avoid
moving all the stuff from the external drive to the
mac, and then having to move it all back onto the
    external drive.
But most external drive was formated using fat 32 which theoretically limit to 2 TB and file size limit to 4 GB. Just put a useless file from your pc, and connect your external to your MacBook ,and see if you can copy and or delete that file from your Mac.
You can also check your HD format on PC side by: go to my computer, right click the external HD icon and select properties, and it will shows you the hd was formatted with,...
If you mean you want to format to mac format "on the fly", they might be some utilities for that on Mac side, but I'm not aware of, but why you want to re-format it if the external work for both sides without getting new format, since format that using MAc extended journaled wight result unreadable on your PC side.

  • Paranoid about Software Update

I've been running Os 10.5.1 for a month on a brand new Intel 24in iMac and I discovered from VersionTracker tonight that a Front Row update v2.1.2 is out. Software Update has downloaded plenty of stuff (on manual checks, not automatic) including the new versions of Quicktime and iTunes but it hasn't ever offered me a Front Row update. My installed version is 1.0 and I was surprised to see on VersionTracker that Software Update has apparently failed to notify me about Front Row 1.0.1, 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.3, 1.3.1 and now 2.1.2.
Some sort of conspiracy surely? Now I'm getting paranoid, is there a neat list somewhere of the latest versions of all the Leopard system software components and bundled applications?
    Simon

    pr,
Leopard came with version 2.x of Front Row.
The Front Row that is in the applications folder is basically for the people that do not have a remote and is listed as 1.0
To find out which version of Front Row you actually have, look inside the System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row
You should however show the Front Row update of 2.1.2 in Software Update.
If you don't, you can download it directly from Apple as you probably already know.

  • About Software update server

    Hello,
I read a lot of contribution about SoftwareUpdate server doesn't working and a solution is :
    defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL 'http://SERVERNAME:8088/'
I would like to know if it's a "normal" way to make the software update working ? Is it an Apple's bug ? Is it the way it suppose to work ?
It's just because I have more than 150 Macs to be served by my SoftwareUpdate server. If I need to use this command line on each computer the SoftwareUpdate Server is not so usefull.
It must be possible to use ARD and "Send Unix command".
    Thanks for you answer.
    Jacques
    G5 Dual Processor 2 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

    Bonjour, Jacques,
I, too am working on implementing my own software update server, and am having some problems making clients connect. Sending 'softwareupdate -l' via ARD lists the updates I've enabled on my server, but 'softwareupdate -ia' causes them to install from Apple's server... and obviously not just the ones I enabled!
I see you have your own computer listed as running 10.3.8; if your clients are running a version of 10.3, to my knowledge they can only get updates from Apple, not your server. Also, if you've found any more information relative to this, please post here or perhaps the Apple client management list. Thanks!

  • About Software License..

Is the software officially protected if say, with SPL??
What happen if the user violates the term??

    kajbj , you misunderstood.
I meant, what can I do if people violate any term in
the linsence of my software?? assumably I chose SPL?You can't choose SPL if we are talking about Sun public license, so lets say that you chose another license model instead.
You can sue your client if you have a license, and a client violates it.

  • Though I assume that video DVDs are region locked, what about software?

Will a US iMac be able to handle Japanese Apple software?  I just recently purchased an iMac here in Japan and want to spring for an MBA this christmas back in the states.  I also bought iWork (family pack) and intend to put that on my MBA.  Will the US MBA be able to use the Japanese iWork?

Thanks, Tom.  Not concerned about language since I already switched this Mac to English and am using iWork in English.  I just realized that the MBA has no disk drive, so I'd have to connect it to my iMac via thunderbolt anyway to share the DVD.  Thanks again!

  • I am curious about software options...

I bought i work under the impression that it could serve as a replacement for microspft publisher when i switched over. however, i truly need calendar templates that i can adjust and even the ability to design calendars with graphics. is there any software out there for mac that is good in this area?
I have heard something about swift publisher but i cannot discover whether or not it creates calendars. does anyone know?

The current version of Swift Publisher (v1.0.3) does not contain any "built-in" calendar templates (as far as the on-line, download version goes). Additional templates are supposed to be included in the CD package, but I do not know what they entail. PrintShop for Mac, of course, still has a calendar generator module. (I make custom calendars with it using photos of my grandson.) Still, I don't think it would be all that hard to create a template in Pages with a graphic placeholder in the background and an empty table with the days of the week across the top in the foreground. Then simply enter the year, month and date information as either text or graphics stored in media pallet.
